Happy New Year!
I hope this New Year finds each of you healthy, happy and able to relax after enjoying the
Christmas season with family and friends!
Updates:
Holiday Craft Show Bake Sale
Accolades go out to Dorothy Bailey, the Chairwoman of the Bake Sale, and her crew who
sold over $900 worth of goodies. That’s a lot of dough!
On behalf of the Center and Dorothy Bailey we would like to thank each and every one
who donated baked goods and to all of the shoppers who made it such a GREAT SUCCESS!
All proceeds go to benefit our Center.
Christmas Party
A big thank you to Don and Betty Pare’ for the donation of the handmade blanket chest, and
to all the quilters for donating the beautiful quilt, we will raffle both items at the Christmas Party.
Our Center is so fortunate to have the caring, compassionate members who so generously donate
their time and talents, as well as the many gifts throughout the year. What teamwork, thank you
to all!
Membership Dues
Beginning January 1, 2015 annual membership dues will be $20.00 for residents of Van Buren
Township and $25.00 for all non-residents. With this increase in mind, the membership is still
a great value! A 1-year membership for a VBT resident equates to only .39 cents a week and
.48 cents a week for non-resident. We strive to provide programs that foster health, wellness,
intellectual stimuli, social interactions, as well as spiritual uplifting. As always, we pride our
Center on delivering value at a minimal cost to our members.
Checkout the “Spotlight” page in the newsletter you will find new programs and events
in 2015. The Center will offer Meditation classes starting in February.

Feature of the Month
Why Seniors benefit from Meditation?
1. Meditation helps memory: The dominant long term memory and short term memory storage hubs, the Hippocampus and frontal brain lobe, both become well-stimulated during meditation. What does this mean for the aging Senior? Better long and short term memory recall, including retrieving long lost memories. The aging person’s brain, through meditation, is ensured to retain the ability to store new memories now, as well as through the advancing years. 2. Meditation makes the digestive system work better: The deep breathing exercises central to any meditation program improve circulation and blood oxygen enrichment, sending extra help to all of the organs, including the stomach and intestines. After incorporating meditation into their daily lives, Senior citizens with digestive problems will see immediate relief. In addition to the digestive systems multiplied efficiency, meditation’s extra oxygen boost helps the immune system, heals the lungs, and improves circulation. 3. Meditation activates the happy part of the brain: By stimulating the “feel-good” prefrontal cortex brain region, Seniors who suffer from depression and anxiety can benefit greatly from meditation (so can people of all ages!). With increased feelings of happiness in the mind, the aging Senior can renew his or her zest for life! 4. Meditation sharpens and focuses the mind: With an increased mental alertness and heightened ability to function as a well-capable member of society, meditation can make the Senior years just as rewarding as other life phases. The synchronized brain hemispheres, left and right, of the elderly meditator enable a remarkable brain function improvement. Better focus, more creativity, quicker wit, are just a few of the available benefits. Meditation is many times more effective than a crossword puzzle. 5. Meditation melts away stress, yielding many great benefits: For Senior citizens, long term stress can come from many sources: chronic illness, disability, or the loss of a spouse. Two significant aging and quality of life factors, stress and end-of-life anxiety, are greatly reduced after beginning a meditation program. Naturally, many experts believe meditation to be the “fountain of youth” for both the body and brain, and older people can receive a limitless number of these benefits. The Center will offer Meditation Classes beginning in February 2015 For more information see the “Spotlight Page”.
The wish to age gracefully can make any of us feel overwhelmed. Luckily, more and more doctors believe meditation to be the very best tool for mental, physical, and emotional senior health.

Be more active during the day
In addition to formal aerobic exercise and strength training, there are many chances to be
active throughout the day. Remember - the more you move, the more calories you burn
and the easier it is to keep your glucose level as well as your blood pressure on target. More
and more research is finding that sitting too much is harmful to your health. Just getting up
once an hour to stretch and walk around is better than sitting for hours on end in a chair.
Take every opportunity you can to get up and move. Here are a few ways you can do this:
While you are at home:
Fidget - tap or wiggle your foot while sitting
Get up once an hour to stretch or take a quick walk
Take the dog for a walk around the block
Do your own housework such as vacuuming, dusting, and washing dishes
Walk in place during the commercials of your favorite TV shows
While you are out and about:
Walk down every aisle of the grocery store
When on a road trip stop every few hours for a stretch and walk around
Use the stairs instead of the elevator
If you take public transportation get off a stop earlier and walk the rest of
the way to your destination
Angels
I believe there are angels in the world today.
They don’t wear robes, and you won’t recognize them
by their harps or halo. But they come into our ordinary lives with
an extraordinary way of looking at the world and everyone in it through a lens
of caring and compassion .

LAUGH!
It’s good for you! :-)
Senior Humor
Being Polite
“Sugar why don’t you sit down by the
table and we’ll start supper.” said
Dorothy to her Husband of 50 years.
“Sure thing,” said her husband settling
himself down.
“Now darling, would you like the soup
first or the salad?” Questioned Dorothy.
“Umm I guess I’ll take the soup.”
he responded. After a whole meal of one
endearing term after another, their guest
Bob couldn’t contain his curiosity any
longer. Bob snuck into the kitchen and
asked, “Dorothy do you always talk to
your husband like that?”
“Bob, I’ll be honest with you,” Dorothy
replied. “It’s been five years now, I just
can’t remember his name, and I am just
too embarrassed to ask him!”
