By popular demand, the Italian American Cultural Society will host their 4th Annual Captain Jack’s Seafood Table on Friday, February 6, 2015, six o’clock in the evening, at the Italian American Cultural Society Banquet & Conference Center, 43843 Romeo Plank Road, Clinton Township.

Stroll among the varieties of succulent seafood dinner stations, which include Jack’s Raw Bar; Mattie’s Clam Bake; The Lobster Pot; From the Smoke House, Etc. and other specialties all prepared by IACS Executive Chef and General Manager, Alex Lozovoj.

Congratulations! To the children in the IACS language program, who sang Christmas carols in Italian at Santa’s Breakfast.

Didn’t we have fun at Santa’s Breakfast at the Italian American Cultural Center? More than that, I was so happy to see that all the boys and girls at Breakfast with Santa were on my Nice List! And I enjoyed so very much listening to the beautiful Christmas carols

sung by the children taking Italian language at the Italian American Cultural Center.

I get so excited when it is time for Christmas tree decorating, hot chocolate, and eating Christmas cookies! It was a great year at the North Pole! In fact, there were so many good boys and girls on the Nice List that the elves and I had to work extra hard to get all the presents made. Lucky for us, Mrs. Claus brings us homemade Christmas cookies and yummy hot chocolate all day long.

You keep on being good…And I will see you again next December for Breakfast with Santa at the Italian American Cultural Center.

If you visited the IACS during the month of December, I am sure that you noticed the gorgeous Christmas decorations adorning the lobby and banquet halls. The lovely twelve foot Christmas tree was donated by Teresa Trovato Matthews, proprietor of the Dairy Queen at 25 Mile and Shelby Road in Shelby

Messina Trucking, Inc. traces its beginnings to the mid-1950’s when the company’s founder, Steve Messina, Sr. acquired a tandem international truck and drove on a contract basis for other trucking companies in the metropolitan Detroit area. With a brief respite when he was drafted in the wake of the Korean War after serving in the U.S. Army, he returned to dedicate himself to trucking. Soon, he had developed a solid reputation and the contracts kept coming. The amount of work dramatically expanded, and he was no longer able to carry all of the loads himself. As a result, in 1965, Messina

Stephen L. Messina Trucking, Inc. was born. Steve was a loyal and dedicated to his local community as a business leader. He was engaged and participated as a member and trustee for the following Shelby Township Lions Club. He was an active member former president and received the Melvin Jones Award. Utica Community Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence Board member and past president. He was a member of the Sterling Heights Chamber of Commerce and also received the Lil Adams Award as well as the Citizen of the Year Award. He was a member of the Italian American Chamber, Italian Member Delegates, Italian American Cultural Society, and board member for the Leader Dogs for the Blind. He was also involved in the Aggregate Carriers, President of Scalawags Golf Club, active supporter of Austin High School and Academy, De La Salle High School, volunteer for the Lions Club ~ Bear Camp. He was a very active and dedicated person for all.

Cenone, conto alla rovescia, spumante e buoni propositi. Secondo gli psicologi la metà di noi, attorno a capodanno, stila un elenco di ciò che cambierà nella sua vita. A giugno però 6 su 10 hanno già mollato, e qualcuno non ricorda neppure che cosa si era ripromesso. Tanto che il 20% rifarà la lista identica l’anno seguente: fare più ginnastica, smettere di fumare, risparmiare, cambiare lavoro, fare più vacanze o migliorare le relazioni con gli altri... Eppure, se affrontati nel modo giusto, i buoni propositi possono davvero aiutarci a migliorare. E l’inizio dell’anno, quando tutti si aspettano qualcosa di nuovo, è un buon momento per porsi degli obiettivi. Ma come mantenerli?

DETERMINATI. La prima regola è farsi un esame di coscienza, per capire quali sono davvero i cambiamenti che riteniamo importanti. «Spesso siamo spinti a porci obiettivi che gli altri considerano rilevanti, ma che in realtà non lo sono

per noi» dice Angelica Moè, docente di Psicologia della motivazione e delle emozioni all’Università di Padova. «Questo tipo di spinta, che arriva dall’esterno e non da una convinzione reale, è però destinata a esaurirsi presto e non ci sostiene nei momenti di impegno e difficoltàche dobbiamo affrontare quando mettiamo in atto un cambiamento delle nostre abitudini e dei nostri stili di vita». REALISTI. Il secondo consiglio è essere realistici. Porsi mete impossibili è una vera e propria buccia di banana. Non si può passare in un anno dalla taglia 56 alla 42, né trovare l’anima gemella e avere quattro figli. Si rischia quella cheJanet Polivy, psicologa dell’Università di Toronto, ha definito “sindromedella falsa speranza”: un circolo vizioso di propositi, fallimenti e nuovi sforzi, nel tentativo di cambiare se stessi. Come sottolinea Polivy, è invece importante individuare gli obiettivi raggiungibili. PRECISI. Per raggiungerli, poi – ed è il terzo consiglio –, occorre essere precisi. Non basta dire “farò più sport”: bisogna vincolarsi con l’iscrizione a un corso

in palestra, con giorni eoraridefiniti(vedilagallery qui sopra). Qualche anno fa, uno studio pubblicato sul Journal of Clinical Psychology dallo psicologo americano John Norcoss, d e l l ’ U n i v e r s i t à di Scranton ( P e n n s y l v a n i a ) , ha stabilito che programmare nei dettagli le azioni da intraprendere per realizzare ciò che ci si propone a capodanno moltiplica per 10 le probabilità di essere ancora concentrati su quell’obiettivo sei mesi più tardi. Inoltre, «se il proponimento è ambizioso, può essere utile scomporlo in desideri generici obiettivi più piccoli e valorizzarne il raggiungimento» riprende Moè. In questo modo non avremo l’impressione di dover scalare una montagna. EVITARE LE TENTAzIONI. John Norcross suggerisce inoltre di porre una grande cura nell’eliminare le tentazioni. Se volete davvero dimagrire, insomma, i cibi troppo calorici non dovranno più avere diritto di cittadinanza

in casa vostra. E per dire addio alla sigaretta è meglio evitare i luoghi dove ci si ritrova a fumare. FISIOLOGIA DELLE TENTAzIONI. Certo, lungo il percorso qualche scivolone capiterà a tutti. Anche perché le tentazioni ci saranno: resistervi non è sempre un gioco da ragazzi, né tutti ci riescono facilmente. Gli studi di neurofisiologia, del resto,lo confermano. Quando cerchiamo di resistere alle lusinghe dell’ozio, del cibo, di una sigaretta o di una vetrina, deve entrare in azione la capacità di ritardareunagratificazioneimmediata per avere una maggiore ricompensa futura. L’ippocampo ha in questo un ruolo importante. «Questa struttura, sede della memoria, è necessaria anche per immaginare le situazioni future con una

ricchezza di dettagli che le rende attraenti » ha spiegato Mathias Pessiglione, che ha guidato uno studio dell’Institut du cerveau et de la moelle épinière di Parigi. Per questo, pazienti con danni all’ippocampo, come i malati di Alzheimer, hanno difficoltà a programmareobiettivi futuri. Peraltro, di fronte a una tentazione, l’ippocampo risveglia anche il ricordo del piacere che ne deriva, e alla fine a farci deciderese sia meglio un uovo oggi o una gallina domani è la corteccia. una maggiore attivazione proprio in quest’area. Non sempre riusciremo però a far prevalere i ragionamenti. Inevitabilmente, qualche volta, sarà la gratificazioneimmediata ad avere la meglio. «Per non scoraggiarsi di fronte a un fallimento bisogna apprezzare quanto di buono si è fatto fino adallora» suggerisce Angelica Moè. Mai, invece, cadere nell’errore di considerare una caduta come la prova della propria incapacità: equivale a mettere la pietra tombale sul buon proposito. In qualche caso, è persino possibile trasformare un obiettivo di lungo periodo in una ricompensa quotidiana: è il caso dell’attività fisica. Secondo uno studiostatunitense pubblicato su Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, anche in piccole dosi lo sport scatena emozioni positive, che diventano un incoraggiamento a perseverare su quella strada. Inoltre, migliorando il tono dell’umore, l’attività fisicarende complessivamente più determinati. CARA, MI AIUTI? Gli psicologi statunitensi, che sui buoni propositi e la motivazione hanno scritto intere biblioteche, consigliano poi di darsi dei premi quando si ottiene un risultato. «I premi possono essere utili inizialmente, ma sono uno stimolo esterno e non incidono sulla nostra reale determinazione» obietta però Moè. «Si rischia di proseguire nei

comportamenti virtuosi per un po’, soltanto per potersi premiare». L’importante, invece, è crederci: Norcross ha visto che l’essere convinti di poter cambiare (atteggiamento cheglipsicologidefiniscono“senso di autoefficacia”) èdeterminante per mantenere i propositi fatti. L’ultima strategia consigliata è quella di condividere il nostro obiettivo con chi ci sta vicino. «Su questo sono d’accordo» conclude Angelica Moè. «Il supporto emotivo di chi ci vuol bene aiuta la motivazione ».

Buoni propositi di inizio anno: 7 consigli per renderli efficaci

Non c’è anno nuovo senza buoni propositi, ma in pochissimi li portano a termine. Ecco una miniguida per capire come sceglierli e centrare l’obiettivo. E qui trovilericerchescientifichee qualche consiglio generale in più.

Non esprimere desideri generici (“Vorrei che io e mia suocera ci parlassimo di nuovo”), ma un proposito preciso (“Parlerò a mia suocera, a cui non rivolgo la parola da 5 anni”): passerai così dal volere al fare. Un altro esempio? “Devo essere ordinato” è troppo vago; Meglio: “metterò in ordine

la mia stanza e il garage. E li terrò in ordine”.

Focalizzati su obiettivi specificieprocediapiccolipassi: per esempio, per dimagrire davvero proponiti di calare di tre kg entro febbraio, e poi di altri tre entro aprile.

Monitora i progressi: ti farà restare concentrato sull’obiettivo, ti aiuterà a capire se sei sulla strada giusta e ti darà soddisfazione.

Condividi l’obiettivo e i progressi con chi ti sta accanto: questo ti aiuterà a restare concentrato sul loro raggiungimento.

Fare più sport è uno dei proponimenti più diffusi. Cerca di incorporare l’attivitàfisicanellaroutinequotidiana, per esempio, andando al lavoro in bici o a piedi.

Sii lungimirante: non prendere un impegno con te stesso sulla base di ciò che hai in mente o che ti preoccupa a capodanno: rifletti invece su ciò chedavvero vuoi cambiare e aggiorna il proposito tutto l’anno.

Non strafare pensando ai cambiamenti che vorresti nel 2015: fissane unosemplice da raggiungere già entro gennaio, e gli altri in seguito.

Il Pontefice ha ricevuto in udienza nella Basilica vaticana dirigenti e atleti del Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano (Coni) in occasione del centenario della sua fondazione

“Auguri per la candidatura di Roma a ospitare i giochi olimpici 2024. Io non ci sarò”. Parole di Papa Francesco all’incontro con gli atleti al termine della messa degli sportivi a San Pietro.

“Il motto olimpico ‘Citius, altius, fortius’ non è un incitamento alla supremazia di una nazione sull’altra” ma è una sfida che tutti devono affrontare. Papa Francesco, ricevendo in udienza nella Basilica vaticana dirigenti e atleti del Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano (Coni) in occasione del centenario della sua fondazione, elogia il vero spirito olimpico, che non incita alla

prevaricazione “di un popolo su un altro popolo, e nemmeno all’esclusione dei più deboli e dei meno tutelati”. Per Francesco “rappresenta la sfida a cui siamo chiamati tutti, non solo gli atleti: quella di assumere la fatica, il sacrificio, per raggiungere le mete importanti della vita, accettando i propri limiti senza lasciarsi bloccare da essi ma cercando di superarsi”.

Il Pontefice ha invitato il Coni a “continuare su questa strada”. “Incoraggio

il lavoro educativo che fate nelle scuole - ha detto -, come pure quello nel mondo del lavoro e della solidarietà, per favorire uno sport accessibile a tutti, attento ai più deboli e alle fasce più precarie della società; uno sport inclusivo delle persone con diverse disabilità, degli stranieri, di chi vive nelle periferie e ha bisogno di spazi di incontro, socialità, condivisione e gioco; uno sport non finalizzato all’utile, ma allo sviluppo della persona umana, con stile di gratuità”. Al termine del suo discorso, Francesco non si è risparmiato e ha salutato gli atleti olimpici e paraolimpici, soffermandosi a scambiare quattro parole con alcuni di loro. Ha salutato il ministro della Difesa Roberta Pinotti, il sottosegretario Graziano Delrio. In prima fila, oltre a Giovanni Malagò, presidente del Coni, anche Carlo Tavecchio, presidente della Figc.

Numerosi gli atleti olimpici e paraolimpici presenti in

Basilica, tra i quali Carolina Kostner e il campione di box degli anni Settanta, Nino Benvenuti, che ha anche letto una delle preghiere dei fedeli.

Lo ha detto il presidente del Coni, Giovanni Malagò, salutando Papa Francesco al termine della Messa degli Sportivi celebrata dal Cardinale Gianfranco Ravasi. “Lo sport implica disciplina

- ha aggiunto il numero uno del Comitato Olimpico -, rispetto delle regole e per questo si impegna a scoraggiare il ricorso a ogni tipo di azione di pratiche illecite che minano la credibilità e la genuinità della competizione”. Malagò rivolgendosialPonteficehaproseguito: “Le riconosciamo quella sensibilità, quella vicinanza che si traducono in un convinto sostegno alla diffusione dello sport come irrinunciabile momento di inclusione e aggregazione, come strumento chiamato a unire oltre ogni diversità”.

Il presidente del Coni ha poi commentato l’augurio del PonteficeallacandidaturadiRoma ai giochi olimpici del 2024. “Roma ha avuto gli auguri del Papa e le altre no? Gli altri hanno altre cose,

la Città del Vaticano è nella città di Roma”. “Mi sembra che le strade di Chiesa e sport si stanno avvicinando sempre più - ha sottolineato - Forse un giorno si sovrapporranno. Che poi si può intendere la Chiesa ma si può anche interpretare con altre fedi perché bisogna avere rispetto per tutti”. “Qui - dice ancora il numero uno Coni - si lavora sui valori sulle linee guida di quello che cerchiamo di fare noi e quello che anche il Papa oggi ha voluto solltolineare. E’ stato qualcosa di eccezionale”. –

L’attrice è scomparsa all’età di 78 anni. Aveva scoperto un mese fa di avere un male incurabile. Volto tra i più noti del cinema, aveva avuto g r a n d e successo pure in tv

Era un volto tra i più c o n o s c i u t i del cinema i t a l i a n o . Che aveva attraversato le generazioni, grazie al s u c c e s s o consegu i to anche in tv. E’ morta a Roma nella sua casa, a 78 anni Virna Lisi , star del nostro cinema a partire dagli anni ‘50. Aveva scoperto, solo un mese fa, di avere una malattia incurabile. Nella sua carriera aveva ricevuto sei Nastri d’argento, un premio per la migliore interpretazione femminile a Cannes, quattro David di Donatello, di cui due alla carriera. Era Commendatore dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.

La carrieraVirna Pieralisi (questo il suo vero nome) aveva mosso i primi passi nel cinema all’età di 14 anni, all’inizio degli anni ‘50, nelle cosiddette pellicole «strappalacrime». Era una ragazza di tale bellezza che lei stessa successivamente ricorderà: «Se sei bello la vita è più facile. Da piccola a scuola ero un disastro, ma la maestra diceva a mia madre: “Che le importa signora, sua figlia

è talmente bella». A metà degli anni ‘50 i primi ruoli in filmdiuncertorilievocome«Lo scapolo» di Antonio Pietrangeli con Alberto Sordi. La grande popolarità

arriva però paradossalmente con la tv, grazie ad un storico sceneggiato televisivo Rai «Ottocento» con Sergio Fantoni e lea Padovani. Il 25 aprile del 1960 sposa l’allora presidente della Roma, l’architetto e costruttore Franco Pesci, che sarà il grande amore della sua vita, dacuiebbeilfiglioCorrado,nato nel 1962.

La vita familiare non ferma la sua carriera che prosegue in tv prima e al cinema poi, senza dimenticare il teatro. Un grande del palcoscenico come Giorgio Strehler (e già negli anni ‘60 Strehler era considerato un’autorità del settore) la chiama per la parte di protagonista nei «Giacobini» di Federico zardi, per il quale ottiene al Piccolo di Milano un lusinghiero successo. A teatro lavora anche con Michelangelo Antonioni e Luigi Squarzina. Ma il cinema resterà sempre al

centro del suo progetto artistico. Forse la sua pellicola migliore resta «Signore & Signori» del 1966 di Pietro Germi che vinse la Palma d’Oro a Cannes. In quello

stesso periodo firmaun contratto con la Paramount e si trasferisce a Hollywood. Qui recita accanto ad attori del calibro di Lemmon e Tony Curtis, ma successivamente dirà di non avere un buon ricordo di quel periodo, in quanto spesso veniva confinatanel ruolo della bella bionda. Certo, la sua carriera avrebbe

potuto essere coronata da un successo planetario se non avesserifiutatodueruolichele avrebbero dato ulteriore notorietà, come la parte della bond-girl in «Dalla Russia con amore» del 1963 e quello di protagonista in «Barbarella», ruolo poi andato a Jane Fonda.

Dal 1964 al 1970 la carriera della Lisi è frenetica: è nel cast di «Le bambole» di Dino Risi, con Nino Manfredi; «La donna del lago» di Luigi Bazzoni; «Oggi, domani e dopodomani» di Eduardo De Filippo, e «Casanova 70» di Mario Monicelli, entrambi con Marcello Mastroianni; «Una vergine per il principe» di Pasquale Festa Campanile, con Vittorio Gassman; «Signore e signori» di Pietro Germi; «La ragazza e il generale» di Festa Campanile, con Rod Steiger; «La

venticinquesima ora» di Henri Verneuil, con Anthony Quinn; «Tenderly» di Franco Brusati; «Arabella» di Mauro Bolognini; «Il segreto di Santa Vittoria» di Stanley Kramer, con Anna Magnani; «L’albero di Natale» di Terence Young, con William Holden; «La statua» di Rod Amateau, con David Niven; «Barbablu’» di Luciano Sacripanti, con Richard Burton.

Successivamente la sua figura fumeno centrale peril cinema italiano. Tuttavia ebbe l’intelligenza di spaziare dal cinema d’autore, ricordiamo «Al di là del bene e del male» di Liliana Cavani del 1978, a quello nazional-popolare come «Sapore di mare» dei Vanzina del 1983. Paradossalmente infatti, dopo i 40 anni, il giudizio della critica su di lei mutò e da attrice «solo bella» si inizio a comprendere che era dotata anche di grande talento. A partire dalla metà degli anni ‘80 Virna Lisi infatti si rilancia grazie ad alcune significativeprove offerte in sceneggiati televisivi («Se un giorno busserai alla mia porta»; «E non se ne vogliono andare»;

«E se poi se ne vanno?»; «I ragazzi di via Panisperna»)

Sotto la guida di Luigi Comencini è in «Buon Natale, Buon anno» (1989), con cui conquista il Nastro d’argento. Con l’interpretazione di Caterina De’ Medici nella «Regina Margot» (1994) di Patrice Che’reau vince il Nastro d’argento ed il premio come miglior attrice a Cannes. Seguono «Va’ dove ti porta il cuore» (1996), la mini serie TV «Deserto di fuoco» (1997),edifilmTV«Cristallodi rocca» (1999) e «Balzac» (1999). Tra i suoi ultimi lavori: «Le ali della vita» (2000, con Sabrina Ferilli), «Un dono semplice» (2000, con Murray Abraham), «Il più bel giorno della mia vita» (2002, con Margherita Buy e Luigi Lo Cascio). Continuerà alavorarepraticamentefinoalla morte, l’ultima fiction,«Madre aiutami», è del 2014.
