With such a small full- time staff of eight, assisted by a part-time computer guy and a bookkeeper, how is it that thousands of hours of programming are cablecast, hundreds of workshops are offered, and CCTV is a nationally known innovative and dynamic access center? The secret lies with the dozens of interns and volunteers who make things happen. Sean’s Production Interns Lauren Kroiz, Thuy Le, and Pete Scheehle spend many hours taping events in the community and Greg Hill joins them in the edit rooms. Many members help Sean on other shoots, as well. ArtMan’s Cablecast Interns commit to one night every single week to make sure that tapes play and the BeLive producers go on. Thanks to current interns Marissa Acosta, Angel Aiguier, Jennifer Bonislawski, Christina Diamond, Kevin Dufresne, Tom Kelley, Aaron Minerbrook, Renato Rodriguez, Jamal Wiley, and Laurie Young. ArtMan also supervises Archive Intern E.W. Steptoe, who gets to look at all those old tapes, and Alison Gent, who helps out in the studio. computerCENTRAL is open 26 hours each week for members and the public to access the Internet, email friends and family, update resumes and create print and electronic media. Thanks to David’s computerCENTRAL Interns: Nicole Boucher, Maria de Lourdes Cunha, Aleksey Filatov, German Garcia, Terefe Jifara, Breeze Harper, Brian Hutzell, Johanna Jacobson, Sharon Kubo, Matt Landry, Rockelly Louis, Luis Muñiz, David Pearson, Barney Shane, Zakhar Razumovskiy, Juliet Schneider, Ronaldo Tokozy, and Brynmore Williams (whew!). Administrative Interns Joi Branch, Milton Chowdhury, Andrea Collymore, Charles Duncan, Shams Mirza, and Laurel Peters help Erika maintain member records. Laurel also helps out with the production of Roach Motel, and Lauren Scott helped on the Halloween show. BU School of Social Work Intern Michelle Salamy is here three full days each week, working with Ginny writing grants and tracking down resources for our community outreach programs. Graphics Interns Gayle Añonuevo and Jamie O’Brien help Eli maintain the community listings on the electronic bulletin board that runs on the channels when we are not showing programming. Garabed Setrakian is here every Monday night to help people edit. The Members Advisory Committee works with John and the Board of Directors to identify and address members’ needs and to encourage social interaction. They organized a very successful Master’s Screening program in November and are planning another member event for late February. Thanks to Jill Carson, Natasha Freidus , Duke Guthrie, Ken Kreshtool, Corey O’Hara, Matt Landry, David Pearson, Juliet Schneider, and Rachel Steczynski. Last, but not least, the CCTV Board of Directors oversees the fiscal management and policies of the organization, to ensure that we will be around for a long time. Their help and advice is invaluable. Thanks to Chair Fred Fantini, Vice Chair Joe Douillette, Treasurer Domenic Pallaria, Clerk Jessie Rabban, and Vincent Dixon, Dyanne London, Rene Marchando, Ceasar McDowell, Judy Richardson, and Robert Travers. And THAT’s how we do it all! Susan Fleischmann happy new year! from the staff of CCTV!

. Asid

e from

that, I wo

rk on a w

orksho

p fo

r two

com

munity centers w

ith David

Zermeno

. The two

centers are pro

ducing

com

resent their center.

You w

ork a lo

t with kid

s and m

edia literacy. Tell m

e why yo

u’re passio

nate abo

ut this.The kid

s are amazing

to m

e because they’re p

retty creative and if yo

u give them

what they need

, they’reg

oing

to p

rod

uce things that are so

metim

es just as go

od

as adult p

rod

ucers. They have a certain freedo

mthat I really like. They’re no

t afraid o

f technolo

gy. That’s o

ne of the challeng

es I find w

hen I’m w

orking

with

adults. They’re so

scared o

f the technolo

gy. U

ntil they can get p

ast that [fear] they can’t even tell their stories

well. B

ut kids d

on’t have that p

rob

lem. They’re used

to p

laying these new

com

puter g

ames and

som

e of

them actually g

rew up

with co

mp

uters. Whereas ad

ults toad

ay did

n’t have this new techno

log

y gro

wing

up.

The kids, w

hatever you g

ive them, they’ll fly w

ith it.

Why d

o yo

u think it’s imp

ortant that these kid

s learn abo

ut med

ia and techno

log

y?If yo

u loo

k at the wo

rld to

day, m

edia is everything

. If you run a co

mp

any you need

med

ia; if you are a

po

litician you need

med

ia; if you’re trying

to sell a p

rod

uct you need

med

ia. And

mo

st imp

ortantly if yo

uw

ant to g

et a messag

e out there, w

hatever it is you’re trying

to say, the b

est way to

get it o

ut there is TV,rad

io, and

Internet. So it’s im

po

rtant for kid

s to b

e able to

express them

selves throug

h technolo

gy and

med

ia. But it’s also

imp

ortant fo

r them to

get into

the new w

ork fo

rce. No

matter w

here you w

ork yo

u have tostart learning

how

to use co

mp

uters. And

a new rang

e of jo

bs has co

me o

ut since this new techno

log

y hasco

me o

ut. These days, so

meb

od

y can pro

duce q

uality video

s at hom

e, ten years ago

, you co

uldn’t. Yo

u usedto

need a w

hole stud

io to

do

it. So, it’s o

pened

it up a lo

t mo

re op

po

rtunities. And

I want the kid

s to have

those o

pp

ortunities.

Can yo

u tell me ab

out the p

rog

rams yo

u’ve do

ne in the past?

The Summ

er Med

ia Institute is som

ething I’m

really pro

ud o

f. I’ve do

ne that for tw

o sum

mers; this p

ast sum

mer and

the previo

us summ

er. It’s amazing

to m

e, if you listen to

kids and

their stories they have to

tell.This p

ast summ

er the theme w

as "Finding

Peace After Sep

temb

er 11." It was very m

oving

to see w

hat som

eo

f these kids had

to say ab

out that w

hole incid

ent and w

hat’s go

ing o

n in the wo

rld. They have d

ifferentp

oints o

f view and

they have a lot to

say abo

ut it. I think if adults listen, they can actually learn a lo

t from

kids.

That’s one p

art of it: the sto

ries that they tell are incredib

le. Also

, once ag

ain go

ing b

ack to ho

w m

uch theycan d

o w

ith the med

ia now

, it’s imp

ressive. I’m just really g

lad to

be a p

art of that.

As the final tw

s at CC

TV. In response to recent budget cuts, CC

TV needsto discontinue its free Fam

ily Com

puter Literacy Program (FC

LP)for low

income and linguistic m

inority parents and their families.

Historically, the Fam

ily Com

puter LiteracyProgram

has served approximately 75

families a year by providing tw

computer training w

has served mostly low

-incom

e Am

erican-born citizens as well as

Hispanic, H

aitian, and Portuguese nativespeakers w

ho use the program to

improve their com

puter and literacyskills.

Parents first learned how to use a

mouse, and keyboard, and used M

icrosoft Word to create letters

and other documents to practice literacy skills that are applicable

in their everyday life. After gaining confidence from

10 weeks of

intensive training, parents would invite their children to the last

two sessions to use the Internet as a fam

“This is definitely the end of an era," states David Zerm

really tragic is that while children are learning com

puters inschool, there’s no one else providing these services to these par-ents in need. They lack basic skills that the rest of us take forgranted. So it’s a dark day for these parents. C

CTV has carried

the torch for free computer literacy for as m

any years as we could,

and we are seeking new

funding sources to enable us maintain

this valuable program," concludes Zerm
