Happy last “real week” of sum- mer. May you enjoy the week, thanking God for the gift of more relaxed time, visits with family and friends, beach, boat and water time, just time to enjoy the beau- ty of the earth. School News Today on our beautiful grounds of St. Clare, St. Clare School will have a welcome back picnic from 2-5. There will be an opportunity to meet our principal, Ms. Ann Crowley, and our assistant principal, Ms. Samantha Cooley. There will be a couple of new teacher and staff additions to meet, as well as new families. Feel free to join us on the lawn between the school and church. Bring a chair or a blanket to sit on and a snack to share. This past week the teachers returned to their class- rooms and tomorrow will have their first official meeting with the new administration. Everyone is excited to greet the New Year. See you on Septem- ber 3 at 7:55 with a smiling face. Oh, and don’t forget our famous Used Book Sale is coming, September 11-15. They are still in need of books, especially chil- dren’s books. So if you have them stored on your shelves, consider, giving them up! Happy New Year With Labor Day approach- ing, the pastoral year will also begin. Parish meet- ings will resume, religious education will begin, Little Lambs will be returning. So, prepare your soul. One ministry for one person for one year. So how will you be involved this year? There are still some of you who come to Mass, which is great…BUT wouldn’t St. Clare Parish be a better parish if YOU were involved? I think so. If you need help deciding what to do, just ask me, Sr. Kathy. I’m certain I can find a perfect place for you. Bible Camp I am writing this just coming from a Bible Camp HIGH. We had a marvelous week of spirit, fun, and JESUS. It was a superb event. I loved every minute of it, and you should have seen our finale. I just want you to know that Jesus is alive and well in our little ones, so make sure they keep on coming to church, school or religious education so they keep that Light of Jesus alive in them. 75 campers partic- ipated during the week. That is our largest group in five years. Special thanks to all of you who contrib- uted supplies and monetary donations for our crafts and snacks. We truly appreciated them. Very special thanks for our planners: Denise VanSile, Jody Corbett, Lou DiIorio, Noelle Shaheen, Allison Frazer, Marge Zurack, Erin Switala and Margaret Lynch. This Thursday, August 29, is the Monthly bike Ride. Join in the ride

at 6:00. Not a bike rider? come afterwards at 7:00 and join in fel-

lowship.

Feast of St. Michael

Celebrate the Feast of St. Michael with the Michaelite Fathers at

the Michaelite Retreat House in London, Ontario, on September

8th. The bus will be leaving after the 11:00 Mass. Cost is $35.

Call the parish office to get on the list of travelers. You do need

a passport or enhanced license. Oh, and bring a lawn chair

and an umbrella.

Religious Education

Just as the school year begins, so does our religious education

program. Most of the teachers are in place, but if you have a

yearning to share your faith, we can find a place for you. Just let

Sr. Kathy know of your interest. I had four seniors last year work-

ing in our programs. Guess what? They graduated. So, I am

looking for more high school volunteers willing to share their faith.

So, if you are a mom or dad with a teen age student, please en-

courage them to get involved.

Our programs will begin on September 8 for Sunday family, 9:00

Mass-11:30. Monday classes begin September 9, grades 1-4

from 4:00-5:15, and grades 5—8 from 6:30 -8:00. If you are not

registered, they are due this week. Please pick up a form from

the tables on church or register on line. If you have any ques-

tions before you feel you can register, please call or email Sr.

Kathy

Little Lambs

Our program for younger ones, ages 3-7 will resume on Septem-

ber 15th at the 9:00 Mass. Stay tuned. We would like to expand

to the 11:00 Mass and possibly include, ages 8-10. But we can

only do this with volunteers who will step up to be leaders. And

we would need high school and junior high students to assist.

Protecting God’s Children and Called to Serve

Just a reminder, any adult who works with children in any ca-

pacity, must have the “Protecting God’s Children” and any high

school student must have a certificate from the “Called to

Serve” program. Check the Archdiocese of Detroit website for

the workshops.

A Personal Note from Sr. Kathy

Word travels quickly in our caring St. Clare Community. So, I

know that many of you have heard what I would like to tell you.

The end of July I had a PET scan to follow up on a few abnormal-

ities in my lungs. On August 7th I had a

lung dissection to remove the nodules. The

pathology said “cancer.” The PET scan

also showed nodules all over in my abdo-

men. After consultation with my oncologist

and personal physician, I have decided to

begin chemotherapy.

Plans are to begin very soon. It is expected

to be six treatments, three weeks apart. I

have been encouraged to keep working

and continue to do what I usually do. Ob-

viously, I will have to wait and see what this

“medicine” does to my body, but with all

the Masses and prayers that have been

and continue to be offered for my healing,

I do not expect a lot of side effects.

The infusion center is just at 11 Mile and

Harper, so it is not a long trek. The doctor

wants me to continue working and keep

active, so you will see me out and about.

If you see me, know that it is all with the

doc’s approval. Yes, there may be days

when I am out of commission, and days

when I cannot be in crowds. Oh, and I

must wash my hands almost every half

hour!!

I know that God has already been at my

side and all those prayers have flown up to

the angels to provide special care for me.

Pain has not taken hold of me, I’m grate-

ful. I am at peace with my decision. I am

grateful. Each of my doctors have been

super supportive and explained things

thoroughly. I’m grateful. All of you have

been my guardian angels, and I am eter-

nally grateful. And, I ask you to continue

the prayers for me. This is a brand-new ex-

perience for me. Oh, I forgot to add: I will

lose my hair, so I may take on the “Fr. Tom”

look! I trust in Jesus and I am a BIG believ-

er in prayer. So, if you need any, just ask

and you will be added to my list!

God bless you. My prayers are with you.

Love you all and grateful to you and for

you. SKathy Avery

A big THANK YOU to those who have

dropped groceries and personal care items

in the SVdP bins near the church doors. Our

need is steady, so it is never “too late” to do-

nate!

Coming up on Saturday, September 28th is

the annual SVdP Friends Walk on Belle Isle.

This is a leisurely 3 mile walk to raise support

for the SVdP Conferences in Southeast Michi-

gan. Please join us by making a financial

donation, walking with the St. Clare team or

both! Check out the event website at

www.friendswalk.org. If you click on “Join”

you will have the option to sign up to walk or

donate. Look for the St. Clare of Montefalco

team. We are #73 in the list and the teams

are in alphabetical order. Any money do-

nated to our team will stay in our conference

to assist our neighbors in need.

Our conference took a big step at the begin-

ning of the month by joining ServWare. This is

a digital data base created especially for

SVdP. It will allow us to manage our calls

and visits as well as track the resources we

provide. For the last five years, our call takers

have scrawled names, notes and phone

numbers in spiral notebooks. It’s time for us

to take advantage of what technology of-

fers! Our Vincentians will now more easily be

able to share information about the people

we are helping and the types of assistance

we are providing—as soon as we learn the

program.

As we move forward with ServWare and ap-

proach another new year of serving in our

neighborhood, we would like to once again

extend an invitation to join our conference.

We’d especially like to welcome people who

might enjoy learning our new tracking pro-

gram and possibly assist with data entry.

We’ll have a small gathering of those specifi-

cally interested in how we can best utilize

ServWare on Monday, August 26 at 7 pm in

the parish offices. Bring your tablet or laptop

and join us. For more information or to RSVP,

contact Barb at [email protected]

or 313-303-1951.

Back to School PicnicSt. Clare of Montefalco Gardens

Sunday, August 25

2—5 PM

Greetings St. Clare families,

This past week has been full with the celebrations

of the Vacation Bible Camp and the 50th Reun-

ion of the Class of 1969. The spirit and love of the

St. Clare of Montefalco Community permeated

both events. The custodial staff continues to

spruce the school up and teachers will return Wednesday to begin

preparing their classrooms for the return of the students.

The most necessary update to all families this week is the urgency

to make sure you have registered your children for the 2019/2020

school year. We are making decisions that affect teacher place-

ments to best meet the needs of the young people. Knowing the

number of students per grade is very important at this time.

The St. Clare of Montefalco staff looks forward to seeing all of the

families on Sunday, August 25 at the St. Clare PTO picnic from 2:00

to 5:00. The picnic will be held near the gazebo between the

school and the church. Please forgive the redundancy of the

dates and information listed here. They are the most important

dates for the beginning of the school year so will be repeated as

need be.

• Sunday, August 25

• Tuesday, September 3, First Day of School

7:55 to 12:00: Preschool – 8th Grade

• Wednesday, September 11 thru Sunday September 15

St. Clare Used Book Sale

Students may wear casual clothes on the first half day of school.

Beginning Wednesday, September 4th the students are to wear full

uniforms. Parents this would be a wonderful time to begin collect-

ing your twenty Volunteer Hours. Remember 15 hours need to be

split between the book sale and auction anyway you would like to

work them.

The book sorting hours are;

• Tuesdays 4:00-8:00 p.m. in the lunchroom

• Wednesdays 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the children's room and

the lunchroom

• Thursday 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the lunchroom

Peace to you all,

Ann Kathleen Crowley

Capuchin Signature Drive

August 24-25

The Christian Service Commission will be hosting our

annual Capuchin Signature Drive this weekend,

August 24-25, to support their local Soup

Kitchens. Look for us after Mass next to the Carport to

complete a form and donate. Your $20 tax-deductible

contribution in honor of your family or in memory of a

loved one supports this worthy organization. Checks

may be made out to “Capuchin Soup Kitchen” Our

tables will be set up next to the carport, weather

permitting.

St. Clare Church and all our participants will be

displayed at the 47th Annual SOCK Dinner at Cobo

Center in Detroit on September 27 and listed in the

2019 SOCK program. I know many of you already

support the Capuchins at other times during the year,

thank you for your ongoing support!

For over eighty years the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has been feeding

hungry people, while also nourishing their souls and stimulating their

minds. Today the organization continues to serve the community

with a variety of food and human development programs.

They are asking our parish to join them in this important work by

participation in the annual Parish Signature Drive.

C lassic St. Clare Folding Chair

We do have more chairs! Last weekend,

the first round of Classic Chairs left the

building. We are adding a second group of chairs,

so please help yourself.

How would you like to be the owner of one, two,

four or six of these classic St. Clare folding chairs? They have lived

a great life serving the needs of our students and parishioners, but

it is time to let them go. We now have plenty of banquet chairs

for our Social Hall. I am happy to give these away to parishioners

who would like to have a set of folding chairs, 2, 4, 6 or 8. If you

would like to make a Free Will Offering, we will gladly accept a

small donation to support St. Clare School Scholarships and the

Science Lab Project. $2.50/chair is the suggested donation. They

are sturdy and fold nicely for storage.

The chairs are in the Social Hall on the right side just past the ele-

vator. Donations may be dropped in the collection basket any-

time with St. Clare Chairs written on the envelope or handed di-

rectly to Mike McDevitt. Checks may be made out to St. Clare

Church. Call me if you have any questions.
