Dear Friends,

I’m writing this at Thanksgiving and, at the same time, looking ahead to the December holidays. This means we all have a lot to do and a lot to say, too.

First, to give thanks for your support for without it there is no way we could say to the next phone call “Yes, we can help”. It may be TO a hu-man that we speak when that call comes in but it is FOR a Golden that we speak. You offer your support for a Golden likely you will never meet and, to me, that’s part of the marvel of it all. You trust that the Golden will be cared for, medical needs addressed and re-homing will be with care and thought. You trust that we’ll “do the right thing” and I can’t say enough about what that means to us as caregivers.

Second, with Christmas and Chanukah just ahead, and as wish lists are made and checked twice, there will be no requests from us that you con-sider us in your holiday giving. We know full well that either you will or you cannot just now. There are so many competing demands on our income these days and each day the economic news is more and more troubling. You always have done what you could when you could and our wish for each of you is that you families are safe and secure and find happiness and peace.

Third, let’s not forget New Year’s and the resolutions some invariably make (and break). But GRRCNY has made a resolution that will not be broken: at the recent Annual Meeting there was great resolve that we will belt-tightened in every way we can while not sacrificing our quality of care standards. We have always reviewed each expenditure carefully and will double those efforts. We owe you and the Goldens we serve that.

One change we will make for 2009 and after is to reduce the number of issues of The Barquer from four to three a year starting in the spring of 2009. There will be issues in late spring, late summer and late fall/holiday. We will try to provide as much. information in three issues as we have in four in the past. We have always avoided the costly glitzy newsletter (use of color, glossy stock, etc) but even with the Bulk Mail-ing Permit it is costly to prepare and send as our mailing list is large. We have decided that the costs of the additional issue will be better used for direct care of the Goldens.

As is true of many programs in the northeast, the number of Goldens coming into our program is less than in previous years, although this can abruptly change at any time. If that does occur our capability to foster the increased number is a challenge we only can hope to meet. But those Goldens coming to us have been much more medically neglected and our

GRRCNY ANNUAL MEETING HELDGRRCNY held its Annual Meeting and Election of Officers and Board members on Sunday, October 26. Reports from the several facets of our program were presented and comments, concerns and questions voiced. It’s no surprise that a topic of discussion was belt-tightening. We have always been vigilant about costs and have tried to keep expenses down but economic conditions now make that even more imperative. Many thanks to the people who turned out for this important event. Our Officers and Board of Directors for 2009 are: President – Carol Allen Vice President: Kim Dowd Secretary: Kristen Monroe Treasurer: Robert Miller Directors: Janet Gray, Phil Jefferis, Marge Hoyt

The Board of Directors appoints coordinators and that will be done upon the Board being seated on January 1. A THANK YOU is extended to all who serve Goldens by working with GRRCNY.

I’ll Be Home for Christmas,

if Only in My Dreams

Dear Santa,Please send me someone who will love me for ALL of me. I’m not as big as you, Santa, but did weigh 140 when GRRCNY accepted me. The portions in this Foster Home are so small. I need a fenced yard cuz they say I am stubborn but I know that I really enjoy being outdoors and looking around at sky and trees and birds. Walking with that thing between foster mom and me is strange but I’m learning. And I’ve lost nearly 40 pounds so I’m healthy and active and I’d like to loose more weight so that I can be even more healthy and active. They say I’m “a character”. What??? Love, Keystone (soon to be Keystone Light) age 9

Dear Santa,I could be Keystone’s brother but I’m not. My weight was 127 when GRRCNY met me in the shelter and said they had just the foster home for me – the same one that Keystone is in. I’ve lost weight but not as much as he has and I’m on medicine now that will help with that. But he’s right – meals are skimpy. I’m good with other dogs, cats and children. I’ll be 5 years old on December 24 – am I a gift or what? I was the hit of the Thanksgiving gathering. Love, Jed, almost 5 years old

Dear Santa,GRRCNY accepted me when my mother got sick and had to go away. I love Faith, my Foster Mom, who says that my name should be Golda because I have such strength, but I hear that my forever home is still being looked for. I’m a little bossy with other dogs and really don’t like a strange dog in my face – where are their manners? Some cats are OK in my book but others that run – well, I’d like to see them run faster. Peace and quiet are good things to me so noisy kids should live somewhere else. I love long walks – so much to see and so little time. Love, Goldie or Golda, age 8PS, Santa: I’ve met those big boys (Keystone and Jed) and I’m so much cuter than they are. I deserve my home first.

Dear Santa,Golly, Mr. Jolly. I do love these folks I’m staying with. Kate and Pat and the kids are my best buddies but I haven’t heard the word “forever” so I’m writing to you. I hear my younger sister got adopted and I want to hear that about me. I used to live with cats but now I’d chase them sometimes. So – for my sake and theirs – maybe there should be no cats. Other dogs are OK but I do prefer females. Foster Mom and Dad have worked on my training and I’m walking better on leash. See what you can do, huh, Santa? Love, Dempsey, age 7

Dear Santa,My mom died a couple of weeks ago but you already know that. GRRCNY just took me in at Thanksgiving time so they are just learning about me – and me about them. They seem OK. But I thought I had a forever home and now I’ve got to find another. GRRCNY will help me do that but could use a hand from you, Santa. I heard one of the new humans here say “problem free” (whatever that means!!) Seems like your world, Santa, could use something problem free these days. Please try for me. Love, Jenny, age 8

Winter Care TipsA major issue for many Goldens (and their 2-legged friends, too) is a reduction in exercise in the winter. Weight gain is very common during the winter. You may need to decrease your dog’s food slightly for the next several months. And outdoor ex-ercise, while fun (watching a Golden find a snowball can amuse me for long periods), it can also present problems. If you’re out with your Golden, chances are your reaction to the cold will bring both of you inside before it bothers him. The dog left alone and outdoors is the one who is most vulnerable – we humans loose track of time, the phone rings or we just get busy. Good rule of paw: be out with your dog and when that just can’t be managed and the temperature and/or wind chill are low, make his time out alone very short.

Outdoors, two substances present problems. Snow and ice removal salt, if ingested, is toxic and is damaging to your dog’s paws. Store these materials in tightly capped, dog-proof containers, and remove them from your dogs’ paws when they come in. While we recommend “Safe Paw Ice Melter” (available in many grocery and pet supply stores), you can’t control what is used on public sidewalks and walkways. Antifreeze, even in very small amounts, can be fatal. Unfortunately, dogs like its sweet taste. Store it carefully and clean up spills at once. And more than one dog has crawled under a car in the garage or driveway to lap up an antifreeze leak that the owner didn’t even know existed.

Your dog will look forward to a ride in the car with you even more in the winter than usual. Boredom and under-stimulation are so common this time of year. But be sure that time left alone in the car is quite short when the temperature is low. Our Goldens are companion animals and spend most of their time in the home. While ideal, the opportunity to build up a protec-tive coat does not exist. Let’s not assume they are warm enough when the temperature is at zero and we’re in the grocery store for an hour.

Good grooming can help your Golden to remain more comfortable in the winter. Nails that need clipping are even more uncomfortable on the hard winter surfaces of ice and packed snow. Keep them trimmed. Hair between the pads of the feet as well as hair growing from the top of the foot should be trimmed as short as possible. Otherwise, it accumulates and holds ice. All feathering should be somewhat shorter for the same reason. Your Golden should be well dried after a bath and before going outdoors. (CJA)

per-dog costs are up about 40%, partly due to that neglect and in part due to increased veterinary and pharmaceuti-cal costs.

Other regions of the country are harder hit by foreclosures and programs there are seeing staggering increases. Sad stories are told of people walking away from their homes and leaving their pets on the property. Banks and real estate agents have been phoning rescue programs with great frequency. The puppy mills of the mid-west and Penn-sylvania are releasing dogs including Goldens in huge numbers saying that 1) the market isn’t there, 2) the costs of food are too high, 3) legislation is making business very difficult. Some are getting into smaller breeds and moving out their Goldens and other larger breeds. One Pennsylvania miller shot 80 dogs on his property in order to get rid of them. (Sorry, the reality isn’t in keeping with a holiday message, is it?) . Rescue is both a wonderful and a ter-rible adventure.

We welcome being contacted by you with suggestions, concerns, and ideas. And if fostering seems right for you, remember all expenses of the dog’s care remain with GRRCNY until adoption. You provide a soft “landing” place, love, consistency and security and GRRCNY covers the expenses. Love with no price tags attached.

Hoping you and your families and friends – and pets, too – have a very Happy Holiday.

Carol

We all know the usual warnings for humans at the holidays (“all things in moderation”, drinking and driving, etc) and this is no time of year to forget the special needs of our pets. Especially if this the first Holiday that your dog has been with you, do not assume you know what his/her behavior will be.

DANGER: StressWHY: Dogs thrive on routine and human attention. During Holidays, both decrease.REMEDY: Keep routines regular (meals, going to bed, getting up, walks, yard time). Give Rover a place to escape from guests and the usual turmoil. Don’t think you are being unkind in creating some distance between Rover and guests, merriment, etc. Watch for changes in behavior and bowl and bowel patterns

DANGER: Holiday TreeWHY: Dogs eat things including tree decorations, knock things over, and chew electrical cords. Tinsel is particularly dangerous.REMEDY: If your dog eats things you might label “inappropriate” - and remember that stress leads to new and different behaviors - create a dog-free zone around your tree. Use gating if necessary and this is cheaper that surgery. And more than one male dog has considered the tree his personal tree as though it were in the yard – this doesn’t endear the dog to his people.

DANGER: People food.WHY: Some guests think its OK to feed the dog. Some dogs think its OK to take human food from the table (well, maybe not Ok but he can get away with it). Vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis can result. It’s no time for a trip to the veterinarian and a possible in-hospital stay. Toxic foods: chocolate, raisins, some nuts, garlic, onion and artificial sweetener.REMEDY: Confine the dog in a quiet area. If your dog is mingling, even a small note on your table saying, “Do not feed Fido” can help your guests know that you mean it. (Consider not inviting guests next year that just don’t get the idea.).

DANGER: Candles.WHY: Candles cause fires and dogs knock over candles.REMEDY: Place Menorahs and other holiday candles above reach. Extinguish as soon as possible and appropriate.

DANGER: Packages and gifts.WHY: Paper, string, ribbon, staples, plastic tape all can cause intestinal blockage. Packages may contain toxic and dangerous items. And a ruined gift doesn’t improve your holiday mood.REMEDY: Unless your dog is 100% reliable, keep the dog, tree and gifts apart. Gate or otherwise confine if necessary.

DANGER: Toxic plants.WHY: Many of the most popular Holiday plants, if eaten, can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, cardiac problems or even death. This includes Poinsettia, Hemlock, Ivy, Christmas cactus, Lilies, and Mistletoe.REMEDY: Avoid or place high and out of reach. Remember that even dropped leaves, stems and berries can mean danger for your dog

DANGER: Open doors and gates.WHY: Some dogs bolt out doors and gates if given the chance. Remember that stress leads to behaviors you may not usually see.REMEDY: Place your dog in his crate or a quiet room during the coming and leaving of guests. Make sure your dog is wearing a collar and ID tag. Don’t forget the delivery person at your door and the opportunity that provides for your dog to bolt out the door.

DANGER: People who don’t like dogs as you do.WHY: It’s hard for a reader of this Newsletter to know why. But you’ve invited Joe and Rita to your home to show them a good time. You know that they are not as dog-loving as you are. While they may not put your dog in danger, they may not be as conscious as you of what danger Fido can get into. And the dog hair on new black slacks can be annoying to some.REMEDY: Confine Fido while Joe and Rita are there. Do what you need to do to make their stay pleasant. Remember - they leave after awhile and Fido stays.

We are grateful to all of our contributors, through whose generous donations, we are able to provide medical care to all of our foster dogs. But this year, possibly because our economy is sluggish, donations are down, and we fear a day when we might have to forego a necessary operation because it might mean another foster dog wouldn’t get care he or she needs. Won’t you help? All contributions are tax deductible and will be gratefully acknowledged. As a supporter of GRRCNY, you’ll also receive quarterly issues of The Barquer! All contributions help fund our Rescue efforts and also help with medical costs for our foster Goldens!

I Rescued a Human Today By Janine Allen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need in-stantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers were too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her kneed and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side.

I would promise to do everything I could to see that radi-ant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down the corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

Do you have a story or letter to share with us about your adopted Golden? We love to hear from you and about how they are doing! Send your letters to GRRCNY, PO Box 735, Jamesville NY 13078.

Write To Us !

Marcia Buckley writes about Bernie, adopted in 2007: Bernie is an exceptional dog. He is so smart. Tolerant of his aged “sister” (who sadly crossed the Rainbow Bridge in early October) and now is loving his kitten “brother”. He is so careful. As Mark keeps saying when I describe Bernie as good, “Marcia, he is exceptional!!”

Chloe was adopted in July by Sally and Jerry Burdick: Chloe is doing just super!! She has learned so much and is very gentle. The first night in obedience class was hard for her. I believe

she feared it was another kennel. They helped me get her inside and she stayed close by my side. When she realized I wasn’t leaving her and she got some good treats and praise, she was more comfortable. They said it will get better.

From Cate and Gary Ingalls about Chance: Our heartfelt thanks for entrusting this beautiful Golden boy to our care. He is a wonderful dog that has not only found his way to our home but also into our hearts. To GRRCNY: the work you do is heartwarming. Our life is blessed to have you in it

Minnie was adopted by Karen and Doug Thierry and say: We are so in love with Minnie. She is a super addition to our family. She has been learning new tricks and commands and we hope to have her soon in an obedience class and Canine good Citizen Class. In the mean-time we walk, socialize and have fun. Thanks for placing her with us.

The Wheelers write that Abby is a “real goof” and has given us many laughs. She likes the water and really likes boat rides. Sometimes she just sits down in the yard and looks at the lake or the woods. Inside she looks out for a long time, too.

Bobbie La Voie has two GRRCNY Goldens and shares…..”NEWS! Ranger and Ransom passed their TDI (Therapy Dog International test) as a team. This means they can go on therapy visits as a team. And then my friend Kathy and her former show Golden (with whom Ranger is best pals) passed as a team also. The plan is that we all work together. Thanks for all you do!!!

Bailey was adopted by Dave and Sherry Laskowski 2 years ago and they tell us that….”Today is his 4th birthday and I was reflecting on the love and pleasure he has given us and we hope we have given him in return. Please accept this check as our way of celebrating his birthday today. Good luck to your rescue program. We tell everyone about our positive experience”

Lucky, age 12, was adopted recently by Elizabeth Noonan. “She has been ‘mine” since she got into my car for the ride home and I haven’t had one moment that I didn’t feel like she was meant to live with me from that day forward. She is at my side EVERY BLESSED SECOND. She is ALWAYS in the way and I’m constantly bumping into her. She goes up and down the stairs with me EVERY TIME. There is something very youthful in her demeanor, like an expectancy. ‘What are we going to do now, Mom?’ She’s not very obedient and miserable at walking on lead. We zigzag down the street. I figure since we’re not training for a show, who cares? The fact of the mat-ter is that Lucky isn’t perfect and neither am I, and I just love her the way she is. She has made my home full and complete again. Thanks again for making it possible for me to have her. I appreciate all that you do to make these kinds of things happen.

Teddy found his way to join family of Denise Baker and her Ozzie. Teddy wrote us his own letter: Just a note to bring you up to date on me, by buddy Ozzie and my mom. We are doing really well and getting along like we have been a family for much more than just the past year. Mom found out I didn’t like Thunder Storms and I don’t think she liked that carpet in the hallway anyway but she has figured out how to keep me safe and relaxed. I’m going to graduate from Obedience School next week. Thank you for helping me find my mom and brother. Mom says thank you, thank you, thank you. Happy Holidays.

Rosie was surrendered to GRRCNY after being hit by a car and her original family could not afford the necessary care. Treatment for a fracture of the radius and ulna at Cornell and later rehabilitation was provided by GRRCNY. Recently her adopting family wrote to us: She is what we call a great big house cat, happy to lay in the sunny spot on the floor, be our shadow everywhere we go, rides in the car and being neighborhood watch commander on our quiet cul-de-sac. We are constantly complimented on how beautiful she is with those beautiful brown eyes and deep amber coloring. Her coat is softer than velvet and she remains a happy, healthy 6 year old. Please let Janice know what a great start she gave our Rosie and thank you all once again.

0 The Barquer - Winter 2008- Golden Retriever Rescue of Central NY

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green

grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your

life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together. - Author Unknown

GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB OF AMERICA APPOINTS CHAIR OF NATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE

The Golden Retriever Club of America at its Annual Meeting in Rhode Island, September, 2008, re-appointed GRRCNY President Carol Allen to a seventh term as Chair of the National Rescue Committee. The Chair over-sees the work of a 13-person committee that coordinates the Golden Retriever rescue network of 95 local Golden Retriever rescue programs.

GRRCNY AT THE GRCA NATIONAL SPECIALTY

Savannah Jane, GRRCNY #01-39, and Sassy, 06-09, represented GRRCNY at the GRCA National Specialty in September in Warwick, Rhode Island. They participated in the National Rescue Parade and received lovely rosettes for that.

They donated blood for research and Savan-nah participated in the Obedience Trial at the Utility level. Best part of the trip for them: sharing a hotel room with Moms for a week!!

This month’s issue of the Barquer will be on the web! If you would prefer to download the newsletter (in color!) from the web than receive it via “snail mail” , please let us know and we will send an e-mail out

when the newsletter is available for download.

OUR CONDOLENCES

The GRRCNY community extends to Gary and Cate Ingalls our sincerest sympathy on the recent passing of their three year old son, James. The Ingalls family over the years have adopted from GRRCNY 3 Golden Retrievers including 2 seniors and 1 with special physical challenges so we have come to know well this family. James also leaves 2 brothers and a sister.
