This is one of my favorite times of the year October brings to mind wool sweaters and a hot cup of tea. The air is cool and crisp when taking long walks in the park. The trees are displaying a beautiful show of golds, oranges and ambers. I look forward to this season most of all. Hoping everyone is doing well and most importantly staying safe!

We pick up for trips at the Senior Center, Fireman’s Municipal Parking Lot on West Front Street,

Bethany Manor, Bethany Towers and Oyster Bay Apartments on Beers Street for all of our Charter Bus Trips.

For Atlantic City trips, the Center is not an option for pick up.

Notes from Madeline… October

I cannot believe it is October. Not sure how many trick or treaters I will be getting at my house this year

as so many things have changed. But we can still put out our decorations, they always make you feel happy.

More and more members are borrowing the Grandpads which has been great. It gives us all the opportunity to see each other and know we are all surviving! If interested, call to let us know. I am ordering 2

more so we will have them on hand.

name put on the list.

Virtual Grandfriends has not started yet so if you want to join in please call the Center to let us know.

Flu shots and pneumonia shots will be available October 6 & 7. It’s filling up so make sure you call in

advance as we must do appointments to keep everyone safe.

Writer’s Corner Since moving to the tri-state area, one of my favorite summer pursuits has been the perfect softshell crab. The one that sticks in my memory as the most succulent of all time was enjoyed at Claude’s (indoors, the restaurant furnished with all the traditional nautical trimmings, windows overlooking the harbor) in Greenport, Long Island. Many times the softshells have been on offer in fish markets I visited, but I had no idea how to clean them and did know that cleaning things from the sea can be a messy and tedious task. But, 2020 being what it is and restaurants not places I am frequenting at the moment, I decided to take advantage of a lull in the heavy Friday afternoon traffic at the co-op fish market in Belford and ask the fish monger how to clean a softshell crab. There were at least two dozen gleaming in the display case. It turns out to be amazing simple and quick . . . and not too messy. What it does require is a sharp pair of kitchen shears, which you might want to reserve for cleaning creatures of the sea, and the acceptance you will be turning the crab into food. Over the sink, you take the crab in one hand and the scissors in the other and cut about ¼ inch down across the head, which removes the eyes and causes the crab’s death. You then pull up the flaps to either side of the head and scrap out the gills. Finally, you turn over the crab and extend the apron, which is at center of the crab’s body. You then cut off the part of the apron that extends beyond the main body and pull out the intestinal vein attached to it. Discard both. And now you’re good to go to cook your crab. I prefer mine sautéed and after perusing a number of recipe books (thanks for the inspiration, Susan Pike), I found the perfect recipe in a Time-Life book published in 1982. You season whole-wheat flour with cayenne and black pepper, melt butter in a pan and sauté your crabs until golden brown – a minute or two on each side. You add a cut-up clove of garlic to the butter that remains, stir quickly and then add some lemon juice. Pour this sauce over the crabs and finish with finely chopped parsley. Yum! Almost up there with Claude’s!

Julia Shutter a long time member here at the Keyport Senior Center passed September 19th. Julia was originally from Staten Island but loved living in Keyport. Julia had her special seat in the middle of our dining room. She came in just about every day to play cards and BINGO. Attended all of our events here at the Center, local parties and was a wonderful volunteer. Julia had a small group of what she referred to as real close friends she could count on always and share her time with. Julia was “loveable, had a heart of gold, stuck to her guns, always shared her goodies with other members and was most appreciative of what others shared with her”. She will be truly missed.

All active registered voters will receive a ballot no later than October 5th.

If you have not received a ballot by October 13th, please call the clerk at

732-431-7790

Ballots can be returned in four ways. By USPS, via secure drop box

locations throughout the county, in-person to the Boards of Election

Office in Freehold, or at your polling location on Election Day.

There will be limited in-person polling locations on Election Day. All

voters will receive a post card no later than October 23rd indicating their

polling location.

There will be no voting machines, except for disabled voters. If you are

disabled and need an accessible vote by mail ballot, please call the

County Clerks Office (732-431-7790)

Polling locations include 300 Halls Mill Road in Freehold and 1374

Highway 36 in Hazlet.
