3.1 Existing Situational problem

• The P5 level carried out a survey with thecommunity during our Design Thinking.

• We want to find out about the concerns that theelderly had with regards to

1. Clean and Green2. Active Aging

3.2 Method and Tool to Identify Root Causes

• To have a successful outreach planned for the elderly at the centre, it isimportant that all our activities address the root cause and underlyingneeds of the elderly.

• We identified the root cause during our project work.

• The Design Thinking Method is the key method in our analysis to ensurethat we truly understand the underlying needs of the elderly.

• The team adopted a two-tiered approach by using:

1. Cause and effect diagram to find out how various factors might be possibleroot causes that linked to the identified area for improvement under thedifferent categories.2. “Why-Why” approach within the cause and effect diagram toanalyse the selected root causes and select the final root causes.

Why• the elderly are not living a healthy lifestyle

Why• they did not exercise and eat a healthy diet

Why• they want to enjoy all the food while they can

Why• they did not know the importance of healthy lifestyle

Why• lack of awareness on healthy diet and effective

exercises that are suitable for them

3.4 Method and Tool to Identify Final Root Causes

• To help us evaluate all the possible solutions as

objectively as possible, we assessed and evaluated

our ideas using:

1.Criteria setting template

2.Grid analysis.

• They were effective as they helped us ensure that

the solution we are pursuing is the most suitable

one.

3.5 Team Involvement in analysis stage

• All the selected 90 members played an important role.

• We went back home to conduct interviews with the elderly in

our family and those we knew in our neighbourhood.

• We also researched on some ideas and activities that promote

healthy living.

• We are all familiar with the problems and when we got

together to analyse the problem, we were able to discuss

based on the feedback that we have gathered.

C. SOLUTIONS

Page 31: Happy Elderly, Happy Hearts - Greenwood Primary€¦ · Happy Hearts Happy Elderly Indoor 5 Activities for elderly at KTPH Wellness centres Predictable crowd and audience. Manageable

\5.1 Development of Possible Solution

Research Method

• To develop possible solutions, we first thought through what we already

know and what we want to know using the modified KWL method that we

learnt in Science.

• We listed down where we can find valuable information to answer out

what we want to know.

• We also wrote down key words and phrases that would be useful for our

internet search.

• From the internet search, we found many possible solutions that other

countries adopt in solving our problem.

• We enhanced the solutions by exploring how we can adapt it to Singapore

context.

Page 32: Happy Elderly, Happy Hearts - Greenwood Primary€¦ · Happy Hearts Happy Elderly Indoor 5 Activities for elderly at KTPH Wellness centres Predictable crowd and audience. Manageable

\5.1 Development of Possible Solution

Design and Invent Method

• To develop possible solutions, we used the brainstorming

method.

• We brainstormed on different ideas for our activity based on the

need of the elderly.

• Brainstorming is a good way for us to put across our ideas and

listen to each other.

• Then we used the design thinking method of clustering, to

cluster the common solutions for the possible solutions.

5.3 Innovative Solutions

• In this outreach, as our team innovated by using new methods

to enable the elderly to see healthy eating and active lifestyle in

a different perspective.

• With the objective of changing the mind-set of the elderly with

regards to exercising and conveying the importance of healthy

eating in mind, we planned out our activities to steer them

towards healthy eating and active lifestyle.

• These activities, with our objectives in mind, are carried out in a

fun, meaningful and innovative manner.

Stage Steps

1

The teachers informed us that our projects were selected from the Primary 5 design thinking

projects to be presented at the Kampung Wellness 2018 – Happy Elderly, Happy Hearts outreach

programme and asked if we are keen to take part.

2We met up and discussed some possible directions that we can refine our project to meet the

objectives of the carnival.

3 We decided on how we can improve the current activities we had to suit our elderly’s needs.

4 We created our prototype.

5 We tested it on the elderlies to get their inputs.

6 We refined our ideas based on their inputs.

7 We presented our ideas/prototype to our teachers.

8 We presented our ideas/ prototype to school leaders for their inputs.

10 Then we further refined our ideas.

13 We prepared the material and resources and teachers purchased things that we needed.

14We worked with the mother tongue language department teachers to translate our materials to the

various language.

7.4 Involvement of Team Members in Implementation of Solutions

• Before implementation, the various teams did one round of design thinking

with the elderly to ensure that our activities truly meet the needs.

• 5 group leaders went down to the centre to interview and collect feedback

from the elderly and the centre managers.

• We were given an opportunity to hear what the elderly had to say about

our project and made necessary refinements

• We found out that the elderly mostly did not understand English, we

made changes to our initial solutions, such as to include subtitles

in our materials.

7.4 Involvement of Team Members in Implementation of Solutions

• After refining our solutions based on the feedback from the elderly from the

centres, we carried on to collect more feedback on our refined solutions.

• Our school leaders, our partners and the elderly liked the changes and

agreed that changes made in the activities would enable us to serve the

elderly better.

• After our final prototyping, we received another feedback from our

school leaders on the importance of speaking slowly rather than

at our normal pace to enable the elderly to understand and follow

better.

9. Sustainability

• The outreach programme is an authentic experience that we take

ownership.

• The success of the outreach depends largely on the Design Thinking

Method which has enabled us to plan and implement our project ideas with

our users, the elderly in mind.

• Looking into the feedback gathered by the elderly helped us in

sustaining our results.

• We propose the continuation of our Primary 5 Project Work and to include

Clean and Green and Active aging.
