MAY 2017

It has been another busy month for GRV as we continue to work on developing a strong and sustainable long term future for the sport. As I mentioned last month, the capital works program is now well underway to ensure that Victoria’s greyhound racing clubs have the infrastructure they need to improve track safety, support industry development through new training centres and deliver a great experience for racing audiences and community events.

GRV is also working to strengthen the clubs in the many roles they play in their communities by funding people to provide dedicated support for the clubs and also developing a collective strategic plan and new marketing initiatives.

This month’s edition of the Greyhound Monthly continues to celebrate all the great news that is happening in Victorian greyhound racing, with an update on the redevelopment of the Horsham track and GRV’s excellent community work in the Chase for Charity and our role in raising money for the Anzac Day appeal.

There are also fascinating reads on the Fullerton family from Mildura and a recap of our latest Greyhound Community Day and the Greyhound Holiday Fun Days.

Hoop arm lure systems are now being installed for racing at all tracks and will be trialled over a four-month period to see how effectively they reduce interference and collisions in races. GRV will also make scaled down hoop arm lures available for trial tracks and training facilities to help both dogs and trainers become more familiar with the new equipment. Track safety is also being improved by the installation of new lightweight catching pen gates and improved padding in catching pens at all tracks, again on a trial basis.

As illustrated by the hoop arm project, GRV’s approach to introducing new racing and operational initiatives is very much one of trialing them first so that they are properly evaluated in the field and participant feedback is incorporated. It will be taking this approach again with amendments to the Grading Guidelines for a new Meeting type where eligibility and selection for races will be based solely on Aged Prize Money (APM).

The new APM system is a simpler, more transparent, and potentially more valid method for rating greyhounds and selecting race fields that provide better opportunities for greyhounds to race longer and more competitively. APM Meetings will be introduced later this year as an eight-month pilot project for up to four meetings per week after which the results will be assessed in consultation with the industry.

Animal welfare remains GRV’s overriding priority and I am pleased to report that GRV’s Animal Welfare Inspectorate is impressed by improvements in the standard of greyhound premises and the care provided to dogs that they are now seeing around the state.

Participants and clubs should now feel a sense of pride about what has been achieved and I encourage everyone to spread the word about where the sport is at today and to encourage more people to discover what greyhound racing can offer.

The popularity of greyhounds as pets is also growing and this was highlighted at the Greyhound Community Day held at The Meadows on 2 April. It was a very successful and enjoyable day that attracted around 660 people and 200 greyhounds and featured educational vet talks and tours of the racetrack. It’s also interesting to note here that some metropolitan clubs report a significant increase in slipping track memberships as more owners of re-homed greyhounds discover how fun it is when their dogs enjoy a good run.

Speaking of a good run, we can look forward to some great action on the track in May with the Warrnambool Cup and Macey’s Bistro Warrnambool Classic this week followed by the Sandown Cup Carnival, which features the Harrison-Dawson and Sapphire Crown Group 1 races and culminates with the RSN Sandown Cup itself, the world’s richest staying race for greyhounds. Make sure you have a read of an excellent ‘Where are they Now’ article in this edition that looks at a Warrnambool Classic from 10 years ago.

Feature Article

By Andrew Copley

Barry Smith has spent more than four decades breeding and rearing numerous group and feature race winners. The Mepunga East native shares his expertise in an educational new video series about best practice breeding and rearing of greyhounds. Here’s an insight into his thoughts on some key areas.

THE BASICS OF BREEDING

I believe it’s a common sense approach. You only get out what you put into a greyhound, or anything in life for that matter. And I think that if you are going to start breeding you’ve got to have a well performed and well-bred female greyhound and do everything right from when you start breeding right through to the pups’ racing lives.

THE SACRIFICES

For people that want to become a professional breeder there’s more in it than you think. They need to be aware and go and talk to other breeders, and I think you’ll find that most breeders would be more than willing to give you advice on how to start in

BEST PRACTICE BREEDING

WITH BARRY SMITH

the breeding game. You’ve got be prepared to put a lot of time in if you want to do it properly and you’ve got to be prepared to go without sleep when you’re whelping a greyhound down. You need to make sure you can look after your greyhounds to the best of your ability.

THE WORKLOAD

It is a massive amount of work. I’m semi-retired now but previous to that I was putting in 14 hours a day, seven days a week. That’s a combination of dairy farming and looking after our greyhounds. My greyhounds have come first with me for 46 years, but I couldn’t have done it without a lot of help and support from my wife, Andrea. We love the dogs. We treat them as best we can and in return they’ve looked after us.

COSTS UP TO 12 MONTHS

The costs associated with breeding a litter would shock a lot of people by the time they get them to 12 months of age. If you breed a litter and you’re not lucky enough to sell some of the pups

FEEDING IN THE FIRST THREE WEEKS

Pups will ideally drink plenty of breast milk from their dam right from the beginning, but if they are not latching on to the mother they’ll need assistance from someone in trying to latch on. If a pup is still struggling to drink from the breast then they can be bottle fed on Di-Vetelact, which is a prepared diet that comes in a powder form that you mix with water. Di-Vetelact helps pups grow and it also helps the mother feed them. If it’s a big litter we will supplement the pups with Di-Vetelact in the early stages

because it’s very hard for the dam to provide a sufficient amount of breast milk for a lot of pups, and if the pups aren’t being fed enough they will lose a lot of weight which could be critical. It’s important to note that you can’t feed cow’s milk to pups in their first three to four weeks because it’s too strong for them and it can scour them, causing them to dehydrate which could even kill them. It’s also really important to give the dam as much food and drink as she can consume in a 24-hour period in the early weeks.

FEEDING FROM THREE WEEKS OF AGE

At three to four weeks of age we start them on a little bit of canned puppy food and puppy kibble soaked in Di-Vetelact so it has a mushy texture. After a few days of that we soak the food in a little less Di-Vetelact and introduce a little bit of milk. As the days go on they have a little more milk and a little less Di-Vetelact and after a week and a half we don’t give them any Di-Vetelact as their food is soaked only in milk. As time goes on they eat more and more which makes it easier on the mother, and she’ll ween them completely after about six weeks.

FEEDING AFTER SIX WEEKS OF AGE

At six weeks of age we continue with the canned food and soaked puppy kibble and we also start giving them raw bones to chew on to help their teeth come through quicker. When they get to three months they go on to dry food (kibble), meat, as many raw bones as they can chew on and as much milk as they can drink. Kibble is part of a balanced diet. You have to have a balanced diet in their ration. You could not just give them meat and milk because they won’t put weight on and they won’t grow properly.

WORMING PUPS

We worm them when they’re one week old and every two weeks after that up until they are three months of age. Once they reach three months we worm them once every month. That might sound like a lot but I just believe that a clean pup grows better and there’s no point feeding pups a whole lot of good nutrition if they’ve got worms.

to cover your costs, by the time you rear those pups until they’re 12 months old it could cost you six, seven or eight thousand dollars - and that’s to rear them only. If you use a stud dog with let’s say with a $3000 stud fee, which is a comparable figure these days, if you get them implanted that’s another cost, and if you’re unlucky enough that your dam has to have a caesarean that’s another expense, so the costs can blow out.

COSTS AFTER 12 MONTHS

From 12 months of age you’re still up for costs because you have to bring the greyhounds into a kennel, and if you haven’t got a kennel yourself you’ll have to send your greyhound to someone to get it ready to break-in and get your greyhound half fit so as it won’t break down when it’s breaking in. Then you’re up for the cost of breaking in and that can vary between $100 and $130 a week for four weeks. Then it will have to go to a pre-trainer if you’re not a trainer yourself. I’m not sure what those charges are at the moment but it’s a pretty substantial cost and you won’t be looking at racing the dog until it’s at least 18-19 months old. So the cost of breeding and rearing a litter from the very beginning until they start racing is probably going to be in the vicinity of $25,000 to $30,000 if it’s a fair size litter. So if you plan to breed a litter it’s so important that you’re aware of the costs ahead of you.

BREEDING AND REARING ON THE CHEAP

It doesn’t work. You only get out what you put into anything in life - whether it be greyhounds, work or whatever. So short cuts are not on.

CARING FOR YOUR BROODMATRON

Mepunga Diva has had six litters and she is now 10 years old and her age doesn’t make any difference in terms of her breeding potential. She still throws winners. But I do think it comes down to how well you look after the dam. You’ve definitely got to look after that greyhound. Treat her like you did when she was 12 months old. Feed her the same as a racing dog. Look after her. Just because she’s 10 years old, don’t discard her into a backyard somewhere and not look after her. Mepunga Diva has a shine on her coat like a 12-month-old pup. You’ve got to look after them.

FEEDING AND WORMING YOUR BROODMATRON

We worm them out before they’re mated to make sure that they’re clean. During the nine weeks of pregnancy they are looked after and fed on meat, kibble and milk, wormed out again and then when the dam whelps we’ll go into real heavy feeding because she will probably eat three times as much as she would have eaten before she was mated. We feed her as much as she can eat to feed those little pups.

Q&A WITH GEORGE FARRUGIAGreyhound owner reflects on the dog that won Victoria's

eighth consecutive Golden Easter Egg

By Andrew Copley

Striker Light won Sydney’s most prestigious greyhound race when taking out the $250,000 to-the-winner Golden Easter Egg (520m) at Wentworth Park on April 15.

At just 25 months of age, the daughter of KC And All and Pretty Fancy defeated Lagoon Jazzy, with Big Flood third. This was Striker Light’s second Group 1 win having snared the National Futurity at Wentworth Park in February.

Striker Light was bred by the Weekes Family Syndicate in NSW, is trained by Brett Bravo and owned by the Farrugia Bravo Syndicate, with part-owner George Farrugia providing an insight into the win.

How did you come to own Striker Light and how old was she when you got her?

George Farrugia: Brett Bravo and I purchased Striker Light when she was around 16 months old. She was pre-training with the Bravo family and was showing ability. Breeder Toby Weekes approached us to buy her and we agreed on a price. At that stage she was going well but hadn’t been tested over 500 metres so it was unknown how good she was going to end up.

Are you in disbelief about the fact you now own a Golden Easter Egg winner?

It is certainly surreal. We’ve known for some time that she has the ability to reach the top of the mountain, but getting there is a different story. She has made six Group finals and won two Group 1s now, so it has been an amazing ride.

Did you make the trip from home in Melbourne to watch the final?

No, I was at home watching the race as I was looking after a litter of 12 pups out of one of my former chasers Benta Bale, by Striker¹s sire KC And All. I would have loved to be at Wentworth Park to witness the action live but breeding a litter of pups means that you are sometimes stuck at home. I enjoyed a quiet drink with my dad, who has been a huge help to me for a very long time.

What was going through your mind leading into and during the race?

I was quietly confident going into the final after two sizzling runs in her heat and semi final, but the box draw (seven) was certainly

a leveller and we were up against some very good greyhounds. When she found the front down the back straight I was hoping she would hold on, and as it turned out her will to win got her home.

What were your immediate thoughts post-race?

Relief and satisfaction. Sharing the win with my partner Cheryl, our kids and my parents meant the world to me. I was so happy for trainers Kelly and Brett Bravo. The work they’ve put in with Striker in 2017 has been immense. She’s been interstate 10 times and every time they’ve driven straight home to make sure she is given the best chance to recover for next week. Being an owner is the easy part. The trainers deserve all the plaudits they receive.

Is this win life-changing for you or is that drawing a long bow?

Winning the Golden Easter Egg certainly helps when you have a young family and a mortgage. Like so many others, I’ve invested a lot of time and money into the sport I love and to win at the highest level gives you a really nice boost.

Will you keep racing Striker Light much longer or will you retire her early for breeding?

She turned two in March so hopefully we will have a lot more fun times ahead on the race track. Brett and Kelly keep their dogs in awesome condition and when they think she has had enough we will make that call.

Do you have any particular philosophies on how long you can race a female greyhound without hindering her breeding potential?

I totally disagree with the idea that a female has to be lightly raced if she is to become a good brood matron. There’s so many good dams who contradict that theory.

Do you have a particular sire in mind for her when she eventually does retire from racing?

Being by an American sire, we will have some nice colonial sires to choose from when the time comes for Striker to have her first litter. Her damline has been on fire more recently, being related to superstar stayer Burn One Down, among others. We haven’t pencilled in one particular sire as yet, but there’s a few we are looking at.

SLATTERY BACK ON SUFFRAGETTE CITYLaunching Pad campaign timed to perfection

That involvement included acting in an advisory role to the Greyhound Owners, Trainers & Breeders Association (GOTBA) after the New South Wales government’s announcement to ban greyhound racing - a decision that has since been overturned.

The Launching Pad’s $150,000 first prize took Suffragette’s prize money tally to $178,198 from just 17 race starts. A litter sister to leading stayer Ebby Ripper and half-sister to group race winners Bella Infrared and Braking Bad, Suffragette will head to the breeding barn once her racing career is completed. But in the meantime, more group success beckons with this month’s $145,000 Group 1 Sapphire Crown at Sandown Park her next assignment.

Swan Hill trainer Matt Lanigan pledged that five per cent of any prize money won by Zipping Hooch in the Launching Pad would be donated to a friend’s charity bike ride from Melbourne to Darwin. Zipping Hooch ran second in the race, netting connections $40,000, of which $2000 was donated to Declan Foott’s Cancer Council Victoria fundraiser.

More than 2000 people were trackside for the Easter Kids Fun Night activities at the Launching Pad final.

By Jason Adams

Geoff Slattery was full of praise for husband and wife training team Steve and Kerrie White after his greyhound Suffragette’s ‘amazing’ win in the $210,000 Launching Pad final at Sandown Park on April 13.

“These guys have done such a great job with all of the dogs I’ve had with them,” said an elated Slattery after the success.

“Steve’s nurtured this greyhound for months to get her right. This run was timed to perfection. We got into the semi-final by three one hundredths of a second when finishing fourth, then she won her semi-final and tonight she was just brilliant.”

Slattery is a prominent figure within Australian sports media, carving out a career as a leading journalist while working for The Australian, The Age, The Herald and the AFL, and later as a publisher and author. While covering the AFL for more than 20 years, racing has remained a passion and in 2005 he embarked on his journey into greyhound ownership.

“I started my journalism career writing on greyhounds as an 18-year-old. At the time I had a passion for racing and punting so it was something I enjoyed. I joined a syndicate which luckily brought success, and from then on my involvement has snowballed,” Slattery said.

DID YOU KNOW? From 2004-2007 Geoff Slattery

employed George Farrugia to work on the AFL Record at

Slattery Media Group. The long-time greyhound owners won

the Launching Pad (Suffragette) and Golden Easter Egg (Striker Light) respectively within two

Jimmy Newob, who is making the long drives that little bit shorter.

“Jimmy Newob has surpassed any greyhound we have had in the past, talent wise. His times are that much quicker,” Fullerton said.

After less than overwhelming remarks from the breakers, the Fullertons bought Jimmy Newob back to the kennels and after a month’s rest the penny dropped.

“As soon as we started trialling him we knew he was something pretty special. But after he won his maiden, which was two lengths outside of Fernando Bale’s Bendigo track record (over 425 metres), we all got pretty excited.”

Jimmy Newob is the only greyhound on the property not bred by the Fullertons.

“One of my friends Keith Bowen and his brother Jon Bowen own Jimmy. I think they are pretty lucky considering he is only their second greyhound,” Fullerton said.

Jimmy Newob, which is Bowen spelt backwards, came to the Fullertons having dispelled a long-held myth.

Fullerton believes that Jimmy Newob has broken an old theory that blue dogs can’t run as fast as others.

“It’s funny because I have had a few handy blue dogs in the past, but some people really do believe that blue dogs aren’t as fast.”

Fullerton admits that for Jimmy Newob to continue to climb through the grades and compete at the top level he will have to improve his box manners by at least half a length.

“He is a young dog with an old head on him which can make him very hard to predict. I think it is really important that we take him along steady, to make sure that his confidence isn’t knocked.”

The long drives and the extreme heat is another hurdle that the Fullertons have to overcome in their travels.

“We installed an air-conditioner in the trailer so that the dogs were comfortable in their travels,” Fullerton said. “We also have wet coats the dogs wear to keep them cool – between the aircon and the coats the dogs barely feel the heat.”

With no intention of moving closer to the city tracks – where they hope to one day see their hard work pay off in group glory with Jimmy Newob - the Fullertons will continue the driving, learning and dedication to the sport of greyhound racing.

By Molly Haines

While greyhound racing spreads far and wide across Victoria, Mildura is one town that isn’t traditionally synonymous with the sport.

Located 300km from its closest Victorian track of Horsham, which isn’t even operational at the moment, it’s a lot more than just hard work that is required to run a greyhound kennel.

But the Mildura-based Barry Fullerton has been involved in greyhound racing for more than 45 years, having come into the sport in an unusual manner involving a different animal altogether.

“You wouldn’t believe it, 45 years ago my father went to Melbourne to buy a goat and he came back with a greyhound – how and why I will never know,” Fullerton said.

It was definitely a case of sliding doors and since then Barry has been grateful for Melbourne’s shortfall of goats. Residing in the town of Red Cliffs, 20km south of Mildura, Fullerton’s operation is strictly family-run.

Fullerton’s wife Jennifer and daughter Melissa help share the load between their 20 greyhounds and 45-hectare property of dried fruit. Barry and Jennifer are horticulturists by trade but greyhound trainers by nature while Melissa is a remedial massage therapist which Barry believes is a vital key in their kennel’s success.

“We are a closely-knit family and we try to split the work between us. I tend to run the property while Jennifer and Melissa do most of the day to day chores with the dogs,” Fullerton said.

But the isolation of being based in north-west Victoria can come with its challenges. Greyhound vets and checkers are few and far between around Mildura and therefore Fullerton has learnt to check his own dogs (for injuries) after years of watching people with more experience do it. He has then passed this knowledge on to his daughter Melissa.

“Melissa is really good with the dogs and I think that is very much part of our success.”

Fullerton has also built a 280-metre straight track to help build his greyhounds’ fitness but they also utilise trials after the last race on race nights to gain experience at different tracks.

“Melissa and Jennifer mainly do the travel to race and trial the dogs, while I say at home to run the property and look after the dogs because it’s too long to leave the dogs,” Fullerton said.

David Dawson – Hearing 21 March 2017 - Justice Forrest agreed with Dawson that VCAT should not have found him guilty. Justice Forrest said even if the Member at VCAT was entitled to amend the charge Dawson should have been given an opportunity to respond to the amendment. Dawson did not have this opportunity. Dawson was ultimately found not guilty of breaching Rule 86(o) and the 12-month disqualification period imposed by the RADB was revoked.

LANIGAN LIVING THE DREAM

Between Nicole, Dad and myself we make a really good team – the dogs love what they do and we treat them like kids.”

By Jason Adams

Matt Lanigan’s connection with greyhounds began in his early childhood, but moving to the state’s far north and away from tracks saw his involvement diminish. That all changed following a life changing knee injury.

“Dad’s always had greyhounds, and there’s photos at home of me as a youngster with them. When we moved to Swan Hill my interest deteriorated a little due to not been near a racetrack,” Lanigan said. “When I was 17, I went to England to play cricket but was forced to come home for a knee reconstruction.”

Laid low after knee surgery, Lanigan and his father bought a greyhound together, rekindling a passion that has resulted in the 24-year-old owning a property with his girlfriend Nicole and four greyhounds.

“I can’t think what my life would be like without them,” he said. “I’ve had battles with depression and being able to go to the track and have dogs at home has helped immensely.”

Lanigan’s partner Nicole Featherby is a key cog in the Lanigan kennel’s success story. Nicole had no interest in the dogs before meeting Matt. In fact, she had no interest in any kind of dog at all, but that soon changed.

“She didn’t like dog hair and didn’t enjoy them coming up to her. Now, she talks about getting a bigger property with more dogs. Even her family have bought a share in a greyhound with us,” he said.

“She’s a massive help at home. Between Nicole, Dad and myself we make a really good team – the dogs love what they do and we treat them like kids.”

Swan Hill is some distance from its nearest race track, and being one of few trainers in the region, Lanigan has built a significant following through the use of social media. Lanigan Kennels has a Facebook group of 700 members, a Twitter account with 250 followers, and even boasts its own line of merchandise.

“Living in Swan Hill there aren’t many greyhound trainers around so people get excited when we have success,” he said. “Strangers have stopped me in the street and the local newspaper have done some work with us. Everyone wants to know how the dogs are going and when they’re running next.”

Despite being a newcomer to greyhound training ranks, the 24-year-old has already tasted success at group level with Zipping Bruiser taking out the country’s longest running group race, the Group 1 Hobart Thousand last December.

For the time being, Lanigan juggles training greyhounds with his full-time job at Telstra, but does have plans to one day train full time.

“I’m pretty lucky, my boss is involved with horse racing so he understands how important the dogs are to me. My goal is to train full time but it would mean a move to Melbourne. For example, living in Swan Hill we sometimes get home at 4am, and I have to get up at 6am to look after the dogs then off to work by 8am. To be the next Jason Mackay or Anthony Azzopardi would be a dream come true.”

TRIAL YOUR KNOWLEDGE

GREYHOUND QUIZThe State Government’s Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds will be available shortly for public consultation and comment. It is very important that all participants “Have Their Say”, and when it comes to DEDJTR weighing up all submissions, positive feedback is just as important as negative feedback. How to comment cards, fact sheets with frequently asked questions, and copies of the draft code will be made available to all participants at clubs at grv.org.au. To support as many participants as possible in having their say, GRV is intending to hold Code Comment Support Days at club locations around the state, starting around four weeks into the eight week consultation period. Participants can book a 45-minute session with a GRV staff member to write and submit their comments on the draft Code. Once released for comment, copies of the draft code will be available at club venues, at vic.gov.au/pets or by phoning GRV’s Member Services team on (03) 8329 1100. GRV’s website will inform you of dates for Code Comment Support Days and instructions for booking.

The pilot Greyhound Recovery Initiative has now finished. Over the next few months GRV will conduct a full review to determine the future and structure of such a scheme. GRV will formally seek feedback from involved participants and veterinarians as part of this process.

I would like to thank all of the people who attended our fundraising night at Sandown last month for the running of the GOTBA CUP. We had sponsorship for all twelve races and many members attended hoping to win the $1000 offered to one of our registered members who was present at the draw. Congratulations to Christine Haigh who was the lucky winner. We also

had a stud service raffle open to all members and it was the option of either Fernando Bale, Barcia Bale or Fabregas, donated by Paul Wheeler and Paul Westerveld, and this was won by Brian Selleck.

The night was a great social event and it was pleasing to see more participants becoming involved with our organisation. Thank you to all of our sponsors and the Sandown GRC, who are very generous in their support of the GOTBA. And while we are revelling in such a magnificent event, we are still very much conscious of the issues that need our attention.

In conjunction with GRV we will be running a workshop/information session on the value of providing the Finish On Lure at some tracks on a regular basis. We feel this would provide a much needed stimulus to keep more dogs chasing for a longer period of time. It would be the choice of trainers to utilise such race meetings or to run at race meetings that will continue to use catching pens. We will provide statistical data from tracks that use this system and have examples of dogs that have improved immensely after running on the Finish On Lure. A dog behavioural scientist will speak on what motivates dogs to chase. There will also be comments from someone who opposes the use of the F.O.L with their reason why, so that we get a balanced

GOTBA Victoria Newsoverview of what trainers want.

GRV will be sending representatives to New Zealand to view the system used there and they will also report on their observations and trainers’ opinions from that country. This workshop is planned for the end of May, with a date and venue soon to be announced. So if you have any interest in this matter please make sure you attend as the GOTBA committee believes this to be a very important issue.

There are currently plans by the Victorian Government to provide education packages for new participants in all codes of racing. We have been involved in commenting on the new proposals and would encourage greyhound enthusiasts to check out what is currently planned by visiting our website.

A draft of the State Government’s new Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds should be released soon and the GOTBA has requested that members be assisted in the transitional phase by working with people to have a reasonable timeframe for these changes and also to provide access to some form of financial assistance to ensure that participants can remain in the sport.

The dramatic drop in breeding numbers needs to be addressed immediately and we are hoping in the near future to see a scheme devised that will financially reward good breeding practices and encourage people to breed greyhounds once again.

Our market share of TAB distribution has increased and it is hoped that this will flow on to owners and trainers in the near future with increased prize money and more equitable distribution to the lower levels and placegetters.

It is only through consultation and respect for all who are involved in our sport that we can ensure a prosperous future, so please help us to help you by joining with the GOTBA so that your voice can be heard.

The Greyhound Owners,Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for-profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers, who works towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of members and their greyhounds.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

“I’ve always believed that greyhound racing provides a family-friendly environment, and while Lily has grown up with greyhounds the seven other children handlers all appeared to be interacting with a greyhound for the first time. The kids loved it and I think it’s also great for the trainers because they would feel as though they are potentially helping the next crop of greyhound owners or trainers coming through.”

“The parents all looked so proud as their kids handled a greyhound in the parade ring and walked alongside the dogs down to the starting boxes. The kids were given a VIP view of the race from inside the fence right up close to the boxes and all eight of them got together for a photo with Champion Exhibit after he won, and received a greyhound soft toy at the end. Lily couldn’t wait to get to school to tell her friends all about the experience, and I’m sure all the parents will be telling their friends about it, and the kids will be telling their friends about it as well, so I think this event will only get bigger and better every year.”

By Andrew Copley

If greyhound racing is to prosper it must have a strong community footprint, and events such as the Greyhound Holiday Fun Days program play an integral role in this.

The campaign drew around 2000 children to 10 Victorian racetracks during the April school holiday period, with attractions including free showbags and meals for kids, inflatable rides, kids karaoke, a big screen video game and the chance to meet Turbo the greyhound. Many of the children also got to handle a greyhound before its race and have a photo on the dais afterwards - among them Laura Carman, who handled Rippin Hayne when the greyhound ran third at The Meadows on April 15.

“Activities like this are so good for families because it’s really hard to find things for kids to do during the school holidays,” said Laura’s mum, Teresa Carman.

“A lot of families are on a single wage and keeping kids entertained is quite expensive. The kids even received food vouchers which they exchanged for chicken nuggets and chips, and there was also an Easter egg hunt. To have an event where everything is free is very rare, and it’s pretty amazing to be honest.”

Shannon McDonald was delighted that her daughter Lily got to handle a greyhound at Bendigo on Easter Sunday.

“Parents could put their kids’ names in a barrel for the chance to be a handler on the day and eight names were drawn out with those children allocated a greyhound to handle in a particular race. Lily just happened to draw number one, which was a greyhound called Champion Exhibit, who is trained by my dad (Darren Murray), and he won.”

A bus load of children from Aldercourt Primary School in Frankston South attended the Greyhound Holiday Fun Day at Cranbourne on April 12.

Laura Carman (second from left) was among the eight handlers pictured with Alezan after his win at The Meadows on Easter Saturday evening.

Diagram of the redeveloped Horsham track

HORSHAM ON TRACKFOR RE-OPENING

Sand from Lake Burrumbeet (near Ballarat), which has long been the preferred surface on Victoria’s greyhound racetracks for welfare and maintenance reasons, is being stockpiled to be used as the surface at Horsham, while there are several other key safety features.

“Every aspect of this redevelopment has a science overlay to it, with welfare being the overriding priority. We’re widening the track and improving the transitions with the camber on the bends being increased to about 10 per cent, which is what science tells us is the most comfortable degree for the greyhounds, so we expect the dogs to get a nice and smooth transition into the turns,” Robins said.

Horsham will initially race over two distances – 410 metres (drop on boxes) and 485 metres – with a provision for a third distance of around 675 metres to potentially be instated in the future.

The club will also have puppy boxes over 310 metres for trialling purposes.

By Andrew Copley

Victoria’s full suite of greyhound racetracks will soon be operational once again with the redevelopment of Horsham now in the final stages.

GRV has joined forces with Sydney’s University of Technology during the redevelopment in a bid to ensure all design factors have been properly taken into account with respect to track safety and greyhound welfare.

“It’s exciting that we’re at the pointy end of the redevelopment and we’re looking like starting trials in late May or early June, with a view to possibly reopening for racing sometime later in June,” GRV’s Racing Manager, Scott Robins said. “We are about to install the rail, and once that is in place it will really start to look like a racetrack again.”

The redevelopment has come about following a safety audit which saw racing cease at the venue since October. While the project is not a complete new track as such, much of the infrastructure has been replaced making it a virtual brand new build.

“Training greyhounds is a team effort and Wendy was a key part of our kennel's success, doing a lot of work behind the scenes. When I was training Mantra Lad I did plenty of travelling interstate with him and I couldn’t have done that without Wendy looking after all our other dogs at home,” Graeme said.

Graeme and Wendy were also proprietors of BJ’s Pet Supplies in Drouin throughout the 2000s, supplying greyhound racing’s stronghold of breeders, trainers and stud masters in the Gippsland region.

Wendy leaves behind Graeme, her partner of 35 years, along with their four children and four grandchildren.

The greyhound racing community is saddened by the loss of Ian Vigor after he passed away on April 21 while holding the hand of his granddaughter, Larrah. Ian faced a long battle with cancer but never complained and was always smiling.

Ian was one of greyhound racing’s gentleman for 43 years and was always willing to lend a hand and share his knowledge.

Ian had a strong affiliation with the Geelong Greyhound Racing Club as a committee member. During his time with the club Ian ran the bar and helped with trials after the races and on weekends.

Ian was also a member of the Racing Appeals & Disciplinary (RAD) Board as well as being on the bench at the County Court.

The highlight of Ian’s training career was claiming victory in the Group One Perth Cup in 2004 with Kilby Supreme.

Ian and his wife Elaine bonded over their love of greyhound racing, which was then passed onto their daughter Del, who just as quickly shared the passion her parents had for greyhounds.

Del and her husband Pete have watched their children Hayden, Pierce, Larrah and Adam grow into the sport of greyhound racing under the watchful eye of their Pa.

Larrah has been Ian’s shadow for the past 13 years, soaking up years of greyhound knowledge and love – and now aspires to one day train greyhounds like her Pa.

Ian and Elaine’s two sons Warren and Cameron chose another speedy path Ian led them down – cycling. Ian raced road bikes professionally for many years, which rubbed off very quickly on his sons.

Fellow trainer and close friend David Burnett said greyhound racing has lost one of its best individuals.

“Nothing was ever too much for Ian, whether it be travelling across the state with his dogs or helping out a friend, Ian was always there.

Graeme Jose has described wife Wendy as a ‘good fighter’ after she succumbed to an incurable form of cancer last month at just 56.

“In March last year Wendy was diagnosed with bial duct cancer, which is an extremely rare condition and something there is no cure for. We set up a hospital bed for her at home and she lived for 14 months after she was diagnosed, which took enormous courage. It was gut-wrenching watching her deteriorate," Graeme said.

The Jose family has been associated with a number of outstanding greyhounds over the past two decades, with Graeme training Four Amigos and Mantra Lad as well as celebrity dog Hot Seat.

“Rocky spends time training here at The Meadows so I figured why not bring him here for the Greyhound Community Day? Just because he races doesn’t mean that he can’t enjoy a day like this,” Plant said.

Plant admitted that Rocky was treated more like a pet than the average race dog, and even sleeps on the trainer’s bed.

“Rocky comes everywhere we go – the only thing that concerns Rocky is loud noises, so today has been a great experience for him. It has been great to see so many people turn up to the Greyhound Community Day, I really liked seeing everyone enjoy the greyhound breed.”

Although Plant has only been training greyhounds for three months he is thankful for the knowledge Rocky has provided him.

"Rocky has taught me so much in such a short amount of time. I have always had a love of racing but now it is a passion."

By Molly Haines

All wrapped up in his pyjamas, Rocky was one of 208 dogs to attend last month’s Greyhound Community Day at The Meadows.

A staggering 661 people braved the chilly weather conditions to come together to celebrate the greyhound breed.

On face value Rocky was no different to the countless other greyhounds there on the day - he enjoyed sniffing around The Meadows track, gazing at the stalls for new outfits to wear and sniffing out all of the delicious treats, and stopping for a photo on the winning dais at The Meadows was a highlight. Little did anyone there know that Rocky is not a happily retired pet but in fact a current racing greyhound.

Athletically known as Karaoke Ken, Rocky enjoyed the social outing ahead of his 80th start, making friends with every breed that sniffed his way.

“He is fine with little dogs because he lives with a terrier at home and he is very much a pet,” owner and trainer David Plant said.

Plant also bought along his seven-year-old son Aidan to enjoy

Passionate greyhound adopter Judy Wilson says she was “blown away” by GRV’s Greyhound Community Day on April 2.

While there wasn’t any greyhound racing conducted on the day, the venue was alive with merchandise stalls, food and coffee vans and the chance for people to learn about the docile greyhound breed by listening to educational vet talks and tours of the racetrack.

“There was so much positivity to come out of the day. There were vet talks explaining about dental care and basic first aid, which was fantastic, but my favourite part was the racetrack tours,” Wilson said.

Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Molly Haines took several groups on tours of the racetrack, explaining what happens on race days.

“The racetrack tour was so interesting and a real eye opener. Molly explained that all greyhounds had to be identified upon arrival at the track by scanning their microchips, and that they have to be checked by a vet and weighed before they race. She explained that greyhounds need to weigh within one kilogram of what they weighed in their previous run or they aren’t allowed to race that day,” Wilson added.

“It was so interesting to learn that the temperature in the kennel block, which is where the greyhounds are kept before and after they race, always had to be 18 degrees. We walked to the starting boxes, and Molly explained that in a race the odd numbered greyhounds get loaded into the boxes first followed by the even numbers.”

“We then went to the finish line and then the catching pen, which is where the greyhounds are collected after they race. Then we saw the wash bay, which is where the dogs are cooled down at the end of a race, as they all get a big drink of water and are thoroughly cooled down by washing their face and their feet.”

“It was all so fascinating and it highlighted how professionally greyhound race meetings are run, and that the welfare of the greyhounds comes before everything else. People were hanging off every word and not one person walked away.”

Wilson actively promotes and manages the Geelong Greyhound Walking Group, which has grown to around 200 members. More info at gap.grv.org.au/events.

Last month’s free community day hosted by Greyhound Racing Victoria drew a huge response with around 660 people and 200 pet greyhounds coming together at The Meadows to celebrate the greyhound breed.

This is the second community day GRV has hosted – the first being at the Healesville Greyhound Association in 2016 - and CEO Alan Clayton said the days were of particular importance.

“Our community days are an opportunity for us to say thanks to people who have adopted a greyhound or who are participating as greyhound foster carers,” Mr Clayton said.

“These people are very important to GRV and the greyhound industry more generally. We are so grateful to people who participate with us in looking after the dogs and who provide great homes for them.”

GIVING FOR OUR GREYHOUNDS

and their contributions, which have helped the program achieve record adoption numbers over the past year.

People volunteer their time for GAP in a number of ways including showcasing their pet greyhounds at designated events, assisting at Adoption Days and, of course, becoming a foster carer to assist greyhounds in making a smooth transition from racer to pet.

Benalla resident Samantha Hartley is one of these selfless volunteers and she recently fostered her 100th greyhound, having adopted three of her own along the way.

“We love it, there is no way we could be without fostering,” Ms Hartley said.

After her father passed away in 2005, the Ms Hartley said she needed an ‘outlet’ – something positive to focus on.

“I have always loved animals and I had seen and heard about greyhounds, so I rang GAP and I said what can I do? My husband and I haven’t looked back since,” she said. “I love being able to do something for these dogs, and for the trainers or owners who aren’t able to keep them. It’s a real community out there - greyhound people are a bit like a cult. We’re obsessed with our dogs and that’s what I love.”

GAP Foster Care Manager Emma Cotsell encouraged more people to follow Ms Hartley’s lead. Most greyhounds need further time to adjust to a house environment before they can be adopted, with GAP relying on its foster carers to assist with the process.

“Many greyhounds who are accepted into GAP via pre-assessment still need further adjustment before they can achieve their green collar and find a forever home,” Ms Cotsell said.

Foster carers help to ‘fill the gap’ between racing and retirement, and provide house training and socialisation for each greyhound.

Ms Hartley said greyhounds were growing in popularity as pets and that she and husband Harry were well known at their local cafe, where they take their own greyhounds for a scoop of ice-cream while they have a cup of coffee.

“I’ve met three other families in town with greyhounds and people always come up and stop you. I’ll have a chat about them at every given opportunity,” she said.

Ms Cotsell praised those who assist GAP by volunteering: “It wouldn’t be possible without them.”

Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chase for Charity has kicked off with Croc Media’s experts casting their weekend greyhound racing tips in the hope of raising money for charity.

For the next six months, Off The Bench presenters Craig Hutchison, Liam Pickering and Dr Turf will each week place $500 on Victorian greyhound races to benefit their allocated charities.

The popular Saturday morning radio program is broadcast to many parts of Australia including all rural and regional Victorian towns that host greyhound racing.

The Off The Bench team announce their tips and running totals every Saturday morning just after 10am on the following platforms:

Lest We Forget

Last year, GRV hosted the Red Dog Run campaign, which raised $12,000 for the Anzac Day Appeal. In 2016 & 2017, GRV also invited RSL volunteers to race meetings during the week of Anzac Day to sell badges and raise further funds. GRV and its clubs have also encouraged the RSL to use club facilities for meetings and other functions.

GRV endeavours to continue its relationship with the RSL, and supports their role in assisting current and former service men and women, as well as their dependants. Other clubs to join The Meadows in making a donation were Ballarat, Bendigo, Cranbourne, Geelong, Horsham, Sale, Sandown, Traralgon and Warragul.

By Bridget Scott

As part of an effort to commemorate Anzac Day, Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) donated $10,000 to the RSL’s Anzac Day Appeal while 10 of its clubs presented $1000 to their local branch.

The Meadows were one of the first to make the donation and held a special function to honour the occasion. The club has its own returned vet in board member Len Ketelaar (pictured below), who fought in Vietnam for 10 months.

The former greyhound trainer admitted he hadn’t given too much thought to that time in his life since he returned, but it was an experience that taught him discipline and mateship.

“I went on eight missions, each of which lasted for about 10-14 days. I had always wanted to be a surveyor, so I was trained for the artillery,” he said.

Just months after he returned, Mr Ketelaar met his wife, Robyn who introduced him to the world of greyhounds, a world that would eventually become an enormous passion for him.

“Before I went to Vietnam I raced pigeons, but then my father-in-law gave me a greyhound. I trained from 1974 until last year,” he said.

The interest is equally shared by his wife, and the Atwood resident has been on the board at The Meadows for 20 years in total. He said that it was the people which kept him around, just as much as the dogs.

“They’re just a terrific group of people. Everyone is so loyal, and the staff at The Meadows are great too,” he said.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well:

• Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing [email protected]

• All sessions for May - July 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month.

• To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must:

• have a current C5 vaccination; and

• not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

• Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session.

HOW GAP’S PRE-ENTRY ASSESSMENT TESTS WORK

one handling the small dog and one handling the greyhound. GAP’s assessors have had many years of experience working with greyhounds, and have a strong understanding of dog body language and behaviour.

Darragh said the well-being of the small dogs was always an absolute priority, and in situations where a greyhound is overly excited by the presence of the small dog, “we carefully allow the greyhound to get just close enough to smell the little dog to give them a chance to realise it is a little dog.”

GAP’s pre-entry assessments are held regularly at various locations across Victoria (see page opposite).

- If you are able to do so safely, gradually expose your greyhound to other dog breeds. Start with large dogs and work your way down to smaller dogs. Dogs should always be on lead and your greyhound should always be muzzled during this socialisation.

- Where possible allow your greyhound some time in a home environment rather than a kennel environment. Let them spend time in a backyard environment and allow them some supervised access inside the house to acclimatise them to a home environment and unfamiliar sights, sounds, textures and smells.

- If your greyhound has never been off your property, the more exposure you can provide them to people other than yourself (both adults and children) the easier it will be for them to cope when they come to GAP.

Have you wondered what greyhounds need to do to be accepted into the Greyhound Adoption Program?

They need to be booked in for, and pass, a pre-entry assessment test, which includes meeting and interacting with a small breed of dog.

To pass this pre-entry assessment, a greyhound needs to recognise the difference between a small dog and a mechanical lure. To demonstrate this they must not try to grab and hurt the small dog, including when it is in motion.

“We do expect greyhounds to be a bit excited at first and we do expect them to be curious,” Adoptions Manager Larissa Darragh said of the pre-entry assessments.

At least two GAP assessors are present at every assessment test,

Your greyhound must not have raced or trialled for at least one month, and have a current C5 vaccination, boosted no less than ten days prior to its pre-entry assessment test.

To help prepare your greyhound for their assessment, it is important to start to familiarise them with what it takes to be a pet. Greyhounds that have been given time to adjust from a racing environment, and that have had some life experience before they enter the program, have been shown to have a better chance of passing their pre-entry assessment test and finding a permanent home.

Other tips on preparing your greyhound for a GAP pre-entry assessment:

- Give your greyhound as much time out of work/away from racing as possible. The greater the time between ceasing racing and being assessed, the more they are to pass. A minimum should be four weeks, but ideally at least eight weeks.

What can I do to prepare my greyhound for a pre-entry assessment test?

Victorian greyhound racing participants have plenty of reasons to feel confident about the sport’s future, according to Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton.

“We have over 1600 trainers, 400 breeders and 9000 plus registered owners (in the Victorian greyhound racing industry) and the vast majority are good, honest people who are doing the right thing,” Clayton told SEN’s Mark Allen in his regular segment March 30.

“We’ve put in place a really strong and professional integrity capability, and hopefully after the turbulence of the last 12-18 months participants are now getting confident about the industry’s future.”

Clayton said integrity and animal welfare were at the centre of GRV’s reform program.

“We’ve more than doubled our integrity budget, we’ve substantially strengthened our steward function, we’ve had a 600 per cent increase in our investigative capability, we had an external review by ex-Victorian police people to look at our intelligence gathering capability and we established a professional risk-based intelligence capability,” he said.

“We’ve tripled our swabbing and we’ve got mechanisms to allow people to anonymously report suspicious behaviour and we’ve provided advice to participants about feeding guidelines for their dogs so they can avoid a non-intentional introduction of prohibited substances into the food of their dogs.”

Mr Clayton has covered numerous topics in his weekly segment, aired at 5.35pm on SEN.

In another interview he praised Victorian greyhound clubs for taking significant strides in becoming part of the social fabric in their local communities.

“I would strongly recommend people visit our 13 clubs. They’re all unique and they provide really enjoyable, fun days for the whole family. We provide free entertainment, good food and racing for families (to enjoy),” Clayton told SEN listeners last month.

GRV recently hosted its Greyhound Holiday Fun Day campaign, which ran across 10 greyhound clubs during the April school holidays.

“We have really worked hard to make our clubs community hubs, and they’re also great for social events when we’re not racing. We want our clubs to be good places for people to come and relax,” Clayton said.

“We’ve got (Melbourne clubs) Sandown and The Meadows, and they’re the crown jewels for us. They are both culturally relevant, while we also have 11 clubs spread across rural Victoria and most of them are in major regional towns.”

Many of Victoria’s greyhound clubs have excellent facilities which are available for private functions and corporate events. To find out more go to grv.org.au/venues.

The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) smashed another record last month when its Baxter facility adopted out its 300th greyhound. Three-year-old Floyd was the dog that set the milestone for GAP, which has already surpassed its adoption record from the last financial year.

Floyd’s new owner Catherine Cloherty said she had no idea her new pet was famous among the staff at Baxter, but told Greyhound Racing Victoria he had settled in extremely well.

“I did some research and decided that when I was ready a greyhound was the best choice for us,” Ms Cloherty said. “He has fitted in so well - he just does what he’s told.”

The Cloherty family weren’t the only ones with their eye on Floyd, with another family turning up to Baxter on the same day with the attention of adding him to their tribe.

“I was looking at Floyd, but another family came along to see him as well and I thought, oh well they got to him first. But I really wanted him, so I watched him and he just looked so calm and obedient. Then I was told the family decided against adopting him because he was too big for their young son,” Ms Cloherty said. “I took him for a walk and I knew straight away, this is the dog for us.”

The Frankston resident said she surprised her two children by bringing Floyd home, and both were stoked.

Michelle Fisher is the Greyhound Adoption Program’s caretaker at the Baxter facility, which has been operating since May last year and opened to make it more convenient for people living in Victoria’s south east to adopt a greyhound.

Mrs Fisher said the Mornington Peninsula facility had grown in its short existence, rehoming an average of six dogs each week.

GAP celebrated its 21st birthday in March this year. To find out more about greyhounds as pets or to make an appointment to visit our Baxter or Seymour facility go to gap.grv.org.au.

occupational and physiotherapy each day in an attempt to overcome this.

Warragul GRC Manager Adrian Scott said it was fantastic to see so many people show their support for the Height family, including

many from the police force as Matt was the Officer in Charge at Neerim Police Station.

“The night itself raised just on $15,000, and we have another $15,000 in the kitty from fundraising at the club and donations, so we are presently sitting just over $30,000,” Scott said. “The Height family are shopping for a wheel chair equipped car and the expectations are that they will have to spend around $35,000. It’s our objective to continue with the fundraising to cover the cost of a car.”

Guest speakers on the night included RSN Racecaller James Van de Maat, Sandown GRC CEO Greg Miller and GRV’s General Manager for Strategic Communication and Marketing, Louise Martin.

Much of the funds raised on the night came from people donating items for auction including stud services, while Scott acknowledged fellow greyhound clubs for their generous financial support, in particular Sale, Traralgon and Cranbourne. To donate contact the Warragul GRC on 5623 1867 or email [email protected].

Hundreds of people turned out to the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club on April 21 to show their support at a fundraising event for the club’s former president, Matt Height.

On Father’s Day last year the greyhound breeder/trainer suffered from a massive stroke, which had devastating effects on Matt and his young family. The life-threatening stroke saw him hospitalised for four months and to this day Matt still suffers from paralysis down the entire left hand side of his body. He undertakes

Catherine Cloherty and her children with their new pet Floyd.

Matt Height takes to the microphone at last month’s fundraiser for his family.

MAY 2017

By Gerard Guthrie

Ten years after fighting out a memorable Warrnambool Classic, Deception Bay and Cash Express are still enjoying a life of luxury with their trainers.

James Sayle celebrated his greatest moment in greyhound racing when his homebred speedster Deception Bay led throughout in the 2007 Classic, with a chance meeting leading to her recent re-acquaintance with runner-up Cash Express.

“I met Angela Langton at the Geelong greyhounds and asked if I would be able to work some pups of mine up the straight at Angela and Jeff Britton’s place,” Sayle said. “Winning the Classic was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and because it was such a memorable race, when I pulled up in Angela and Jeff’s driveway I saw a dog that looked like Cash Express in the backyard. Cash Express had very distinctive markings and when I asked Jeff who the dog was he said it was Cash Express. I couldn’t believe it after all these years.”

While it may have been a decade ago now, not surprisingly Sayle vividly recalls Deception Bay’s all-the-way Classic triumph over Cash Express, which went on to enjoy Group success as a stayer.

“It was 10 years ago now but it was one of those things you never really forget,” Sayle said. “Deception Bay was just under two at the time but she was going alright and she was paid up for the Classic so we decided to put her in and see what happened and she came out and won her heat and broke one of Brett Lee’s sectional records.

“I can still picture the final in my mind. Deception Bay had the one box, she’d never drawn box one before so she drew it at the right time. Jimmy Auld had the dog in box two, Proven Swag, and it gave her plenty of room. When she got through the first turn in

front I just started running to the catching pen, I was that excited.”

“I’m only a hobby trainer but I was treated like royalty that night. It was very satisfying because I raced her mother, Mandalay Bay as well and bred the litter. We bred Deception Bay, reared her, broke her in and pre-trained her. We did everything with her.”

After winning 20 of her 40 starts, Deception Bay produced four litters in the breeding barn, but life now is all about the couch for the 12-year-old.

“Coco will probably be sitting on the couch while we’re speaking,” Sayle said. “I’ve got a dog door and she comes in and out of the house as she pleases. She just does her own thing. She loves lying on her back on the lounge with her legs in the air, which is funny because her mother used to do exactly the same thing, but Coco never would’ve seen her mother do it.”

GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to Register Females for breeding.

For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia, steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your Vet3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number

will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack5. If all other requirements have been met (see

below for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season.

The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at [email protected] or 9548 3500.
