How much water should I be drinking?
Half of your body weight in ounces each day. For
example if you weigh 150lbs, then your daily water
goal would be 70 ounces. Not sure what you weigh?
Stop by and find out! We have a scale located in the
Summit Room next to the office.
Signs of dehydration
Dehydration, meaning not enough water, can
show itself in many different ways. Knowing
the signs of dehydration can help keep you
from serious harm, especially in the warmer
months of the year!
Mild to moderate dehydration can
manifest as:
• Increased thirst.
• Dry mouth.
• Tired or sleepy.
• Decreased urine output.
• Urine is low volume and
more yellowish than normal.
• Headache.
• Dry skin. • Dizziness.

If you pass a vibrant, gleeful lady who always
wears a smile on her face, you probably have just
seen Marlene Abrams.
Marlene is a jubilant, friendly sort of person who
is always willing to help. However, her beginning
was meager. Born premature, she was a mere 3
pounds. She grew up in Mishawaka, Indiana, the
oldest of three children. Her favorite childhood
memories are of visiting relatives in New York.
Special memories involve the Catskills, especially
when she would sneak into a posh hotel’s
swimming pool for the day.
She went to Indiana University to study
elementary education. She worked as a teacher
at a local Synagogue where the principal, Mr.
Abrams, took notice of her. It may have seemed
that they married quickly, she only being twenty,
but they had so much in common. They were
both interested in social justice. Gene Abrams
started a food bank in their synagogue which she
helped him run for years while she also
volunteered at a homeless shelter and at a voting
precinct.
The couple also loved to travel to historic sites
such as civil war battle sites or presidential
homes. The favorite presidential home she
visited was Harry Truman’s home in Missouri.
She and her husband instilled social values and
work ethic to all four children. Marlene has a
continuing interest in politics. She currently
co–chairs the political discussion group. She
has also participated in the “read to Me Program”
for Kindergarten children. I guess you could still
call her a professional volunteer.

What’s up at Courtyard! Food Pantry Sunday, August 12th to Friday, August 17th
We are collecting nonperishable foods for the Food Pantry at which Sharon Ewers volunteers. We are focusing on foods kids can make and take to school and kid cereals. The patrons of the food bank loved the jam and jelly and the jars went flying off the shelves (one per family so everyone got a little bit). Jam and jellies would again be a welcome donation. Thank you to everyone who has donated in the past.

Move and feel better.
Class Descriptions:
Aerobic Thursdays (30 minutes): With the support of a chair, we will work on your heart health with Aerobics! Using
both seated and standing movements we will work on elevating your heart rate in intervals while toning up the body. 2
levels of this class will be available. Level 2 at 9A.M. will be more advanced and use more dynamic movements, while
Level 1 at 10A.M. will be mostly seated holding a slower pace.
Balance & Coordination (45 minutes): Balance & Coordination class focuses on increasing participants core strength,
balance, range of motion, flexibility, and coordination. This class focuses on bodyweight movements to you to feel how
your body is working for you. Two levels of this class are available. Level 2 at 9 A.M. on TUESDAY will be more
advanced, and Level 1 at 10 A.M. on WEDNESDAY will involve more seated work and have a stronger focus on
stability. Both classes will have a balance portion.
Beanbag Baseball (60 minutes) : If you like light-hearted competition, this is the game for you. The game is played by
pitching bean bags into the holes of a board which indicates which you attained. There are 2 teams and the scoring is
like baseball. This game is great for balance and hand/eye coordination.
Chair Yoga (45 minutes) : With the support of a chair, enjoy yoga poses and positions while increasing your overall
balance and muscle tone and breath support. Strengthen your body and relax your mind.
Courtyard Rockettes—Seated Tap Dance (45 minutes): The Summit room studio will host this seated tap
dancing class open to beginners and experienced tap dancers. The first half of the class focuses on tap
technique exercises while the second half combines moves to create a tap routine.
Firm & Tone (45 minutes): Firm & Tone is for the active adult who wants to increase muscle tone and work on
cardiovascular health. This class is designed to increase the participants cardiovascular endurance,
coordination, muscular strength, and joint stability. Equipment used for this class will vary and may include hand held
weights, elastic bands, or balls for the resistance portions of this class. Two levels of this class are available. Level 2 at
9 A.M. will be advanced with more dynamic movements, while Level 1 at 10 A.M. will involve more seated work and
have a stronger focus on stability. **On Fridays we will incorporate a balance portion in both levels of this class.

balance and chair aerobics. Be ready for upbeat tunes and a fun time!
Park Walks (Every Wednesday at 10:30am): Want to get some fresh air and stretch your legs? Every Wednesday at
10:00am we will choose a park in which to walk. Each park will have paved walking paths and places to sit. This outing
is for all levels of walkers. Some people enjoy walking to the first bench they see and take in the sights, others go as
fast as they can, and the rest of us just go our own pace.
Sit & Be Fit Fitness Video (30 minutes): A fitness video will be playing in the Summit room that will guide
participants through seated total body workout.
Tai Chi (40 minutes): This class may be done seated or standing. Although Tai Chi is slow and gentle and doesn’t
leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness - muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and, to a lesser
degree, aerobic conditioning.
