K-12 NEWSLETTER
On 26 October, 9 students from the WCS livestock team, 8 steers, Ms Barr and several parents headed off to Scone to participate in the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza, along with over 450 other head of cattle and 800 other participants.
The weather was hot, wet at times and the days very long but the students worked hard at ensuring the cattle were well looked after, fed, watered and well-groomed at all times.
The students and steers did a great job putting their best foot forward representing Walcha Central. We came home with 8 ribbons in paraders competitions and 2 ribbons in steer classes. A job well done to all of the students in the livestock team.
There were plenty of tears as the students said goodbye to their steers. We now await the results of the carcase competition.
Thank you to those parents who came along to support the students, providing food, drinks and moral support.
The livestock team welcomes any student who would like to come along and join in and any families that would like to support our endeavours. We are always on the lookout for our next group of show steers or show cattle for the 2018 show season.

School Plan…on the move
Our school is well underway with constructing our School Plan 2018-2020. We have started by reflecting on our progress and celebrating our many successes. All staff came together to discuss the best way forward and have worked collaboratively to project their ideas for clear, achievable and measurable targets to further improve our great school. This week the P&C rallied to join in the debate and contribute great ideas on behalf of all parents. Over the next weeks we meet with the Dunghutti Elders Group and host our Yarn-Up to listen and discuss ideas on how best to continue to bridge the gap for our Aboriginal students.
The focus is clearly about supporting a safe and creative learning environment for all students – Learning Everywhere, for Everybody, All of the Time. I will keep you posted on our progress.
Compressed Curriculum
After more than twelve months in the planning, our school is ready to launch the compressed curriculum model on Monday 13 November. What this means is that existing secondary students from Years 7 through to Year 10 will all move up a year. Students have received a new timetable. For our existing Year 10 students they will commence their Preliminary HSC studies. Please note there will be no change to Primary Classes, including Year 6.
Farewell to Staff
This is the final week for two members of staff, Mrs
Hobbs and Ms Watts.
Mrs Hobbs will commence at Uralla Central School next
week to align with the compressed curriculum start dates
existing in both schools. Mrs Hobbs has been an integral
member of the school executive and a highly respected
member of the school team. As yet I have no news on
Mrs Hobbs replacement.
Ms Watts position has been filled by staffing and Mrs
Adair who comes to us from the Campbelltown region will
commence on Monday 13 November. Ms Watts will
remain with us to assist with our swim school and as a
casual teacher. Ms Watts has worked hard to develop a
strong music program right across the school and as the
girls supervisor, has supported many of our students.
We wish both Amy and Andrea every success in the next
phase of their career. We will miss you both.

WALCHA CENTRAL STUDENT RECEIVES FRED HOLLOWS HUMANITY AWARD On Monday 23 October, William Swain travelled to the Parliament of NSW to receive the Fred Hollows Humanity Award.
This award recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred's footsteps by making a positive difference in their community. It celebrates students who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives. William was able to meet with Gabi Hollows and the NSW Minister for Education, Mr Rob Stokes, at the awards ceremony.
William was nominated for this award for his contribution to Walcha Central School through his participation in the Student Parliament, Buddy Reading Programs and his general enthusiasm for all school activities. It also recognises his contribution to Walcha through the Youth Advisory Committee.
Well done William!

It was both exciting and rewarding to see so many people spreading the message to ‘Share The Journey’. The theme was significantly highlighted on the white t-shirts that were screen-printed and worn during the colour run which was held on Friday 13 October to end a week’s worth of activities during Mental Health Week at Walcha Central School.
The week kicked off with an introductory lesson to enlighten and inform on the importance of mental health and wellbeing. Michelle Wayte addressed students to, literally, share her journey. Thanks Michelle for demonstrating the strength it takes to communicate, be positive and smash goals.
The Motivational Media presentation and workshops encouraged students to set goals and ‘Take the Shot’.
Students were provided with the opportunity to learn about and practice mindfulness. They participated in activities we call tactile therapies. This involved making playdoh, colouring in and creating their own inspirational art and quotes to teach the brain to stop and rest: a skill that needs to be learned and practised in today’s world.
Building resilience and social skills was also a focus of the week with Circle Time, Go Noodle, Growth Mindset lessons, Mind Matters, Mental Health First Aid, Safe on Social and a movie, The Avenue, for getting kids immersed and challenged. Students also created a coping card which is the ‘go to’ if they need help at any time.
The action did not stop there: let us not forget the importance of physical activity. Educational sports visited the school to provide primary students with 2 hours of non-stop exciting tabloids. The smile on the kids’ faces was hard to ignore.
Social connections are so important. We would like to thank all who joined us in the journey to better mental health. If individuals have better equipped themselves with strategies to cope with life’s challenges then the week was a huge success!

K-12 NEWSLETTER 10 November 2017
Youth Frontiers is a mentoring program funded by YWCA NSW and the Department of Family and Community Services. The program provides young people (mentees) in Years 8 or 9 with an opportunity to build life skills and self-confidence by working collaboratively with an adult mentor to undertake a project which makes a positive difference within the local community.
This year in the Northern Tablelands electorate, five students from Walcha Central School were successfully selected and paired with a mentor. Together they took part in a minimum of 30 hours of mentoring, including facilitated group sessions and one-to-one mentoring sessions guided by a structured workbook.
Annabella Darcy, Jackson Imberger, Stephanie Magnay, Thomas Micallef, and Isabelle Williams were participants in the 2017 Youth Frontiers program and recently celebrated their successes at a showcase in Armidale. They have each represented Walcha Central School with an impressive level of enthusiasm, commitment, and maturity.

Cattle Preparation Workshop
The Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza cattle team including steers and students were very fortunate to have the guidance and assistance of local cattle breeders – Mr Guy Lord and Mrs Colleen Green. Guy and Colleen very generously gave their time and expertise to help our students ensure that the 8 steers entered in the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza were clipped and ready to show. The students had the opportunity to witness the finer art of clipping and have a go themselves. Lessons in parading and junior judging were also incorporated in the day.
We are very lucky to have such experts within the Walcha community who are willing to lend the students a hand and share their many years of experience. We were also very lucky to have some parents drop in and lend a hand.
We would like to once again thank Mr Guy Lord and Mrs Colleen Green for their time and interest in the Walcha Central Livestock team.

Another year has passed and we have farewelled 17 students from the class of 2017. They have completed
their formal schooling and finished their HSC exams.
The students were excited to be finished with school but it is an emotional time for me having to say goodbye to a great bunch of kids I have looked after for six years.
The farewell assembly was touching, with a slideshow of highlights of their years at school and skits about their favourite teachers. All in good fun and taste. They left the assembly to an AC/DC song, a tribute to their Year Advisor.
Thank you Year 12 and remember “everyone is proud of how far you have come”.
