“It costs nothing to dream,” he says. “Think about what inspires you, such as cherished places and favorite colors, and then make a mood board.” The goal is to illustrate the concepts that speak to you. Are you a modern girl or do you love Victorian? Do you adore the beach? As you leaf through magazines and browse websites, create a collage of your preferences: palm trees and tulle, or luxe estates and taffeta. Pin ideas
DreamYou’ve found your forever mate,
and the two of you are browsing jewelers’ cases to find a ring
design that best symbolizes your love. There’s a wedding in your future. It’s an exhilarating time, but it can feel overwhelming, too. Many couples wonder what they should be doing first. Cowie says there are a few basic rules, the first of which applies to all event planning: Start with a dream.
Basic rules to help you navigate the planning process

Basic rules to help you navigate the planning process
for destinations, dresses and tabletops, including swatches of fabric, on a real board and virtually on Pinterest. “Watch what develops,” says Cowie. “As you do this research, you’ll begin to visualize the shape your dream wedding might take.”
Big Picture This brings us to rule number two: Get your big picture in focus first. That means the bride should not make the dress shop her top priority once the ring is on her finger. “Some women buy the gown before they’ve figured out when and where the wedding will take place,” says Cowie. Since it may be the most expensive dress a woman ever purchases, a mistake here can be costly—or even worse, uncomfortable on the big day. Once you have your concept for the wedding (formal or informal)and the location nailed down (beach or mountains), then you can put all the other pieces in place.
After the concept comes a budget. If you can get a realistic bottom line in place, that will make it easier to figure out how much you can spend on each element. But there are no hard-and-fast rules about percentages, those depend upon you. “It’s good to prioritize what is most important to you,” says Cowie. “It can help to think about five things that are meaningful. Does that list include music
and décor? If so, then do those very well instead of presenting a dozen elements in mediocre fashion. They will be what you and your guests remember most. You are demonstrating with this event who you are, and who you hope to be together.”
Dynamic Duo Rule number three is to remember that the bride and groom are a team. “A generation ago, brides did most of the planning, but that’s not the case today,” says Cowie. “The groom is now involved and has a point of view. Many couples make the wedding their first major project to work on together. As a team, they can achieve the results they have in mind. Stick together so that you can make a joint statement of style. A big benefit is you can speak up for each other. When you become a united front, your wedding will truly reflect the two of you.”

one wedding trend. Today’s bride and groom would rather plan a weekend away with friends and family than have a big hometown event,” he says.
Cowie notes that the all-inclusive packages are among the latest and most budget-friendly offerings in the destination wedding category. His company, for example, works with several resort chains to create events that incorporate a couple’s chosen theme, style and colors. Because food and beverages are included in room rates, these packages can be quite cost effective.
Cowie advises couples to make room in the budget to visit the location in advance. That scouting trip allows the bride and groom to collect facts, do some troubleshooting and fine-tune research on the details they want at their event.
Couples can be very creative when choosing the setting for their wedding celebration: a botanical
garden, museum, farm or yacht—the list goes on. Others take a more traditional route, with a church ceremony and a reception at a country club. “Home is the most personal location,” says Cowie, although the logistics for executing a party in the backyard are considerable as everything must be brought in. While a home wedding can be one of the costlier choices, in the end, says Cowie, it is often quite lovely and memorable.
Cowie has seen a rise in the popularity of destination weddings, where couples invite their guests to celebrate with them at a distant locale that can be reached by car or airplane. “It’s currently the number

choice of most brides, but color, in pale tints and brilliant values, is now a regular on the runway. In addition to flattering blush fabrics, you’ll see hints of icy blue and whispers of lavender in many of the loveliest couture bridal fashions.
When selecting a gown, it’s good to consider how you will wear it. If you’re going from a church ceremony to the reception, you may want to have a coordinating shrug or capelet for your vows, then remove it for the reception. >
T he basic components of bridal design have been around forever: silk, satin, taffeta, tulle, lace,
beads and assorted bling. What changes is the way designers put them together. This year, you’ll see illusion lace—not only for sleeves and filmy shrugs, but as a tasteful reveal/conceal for plunging necklines and scooped backs. Beadwork has become more artful, accentuating a gown’s shape (and yours) with cleverly constructed underlinings in nude fabric. The choices seem to be endless, and the array of looks can be dizzying. For that reason, Cowie says, place the emphasis on you. “What’s most important is how a dress complements your personal style, he notes.” “Remember, you are the star of the show, so the gown should bring out your best.”
If you love color, you no longer need to hide that passion. There’s a trend toward brighter bridal wear, which is something that pleases Cowie as he understands the power of hues to communicate style and personality. White in all its variations—from snow to ivory—is still the first

If your wedding is at a country location or on the beach, you’ll want a dress that you can comfortably wear in a casual setting, perhaps in a lighter, flowing fabric. While the two-gown wedding—one for the ceremony, another for dining and dancing—has become popular in recent years, it’s definitely an added expense. Thus, a dress you can move in all day could serve you best.
As with other big decisions, Cowie advises brides not to be overly influenced by a gushing mother, maid of honor or salesperson. It’s okay to sleep on your decision before you say yes to the dress.
The Bridal Party For years, attendants have had to put smiles on their faces and attempt to look their happiest and best in identical frocks that may not have flattered every form. That’s no longer the case. “Many design houses are doing great things for the bridal party by developing groups of dresses made of the same fabric but in different styles,” says Cowie. “Attendants can coordinate
comfortably and feel happy about what they’re wearing.”
Cowie says the same bouquets, shoes and earrings (there’s a nice idea for bridesmaid gifts) will make a good, cohesive statement when your bridal party precedes you down the aisle. If attendants have budget constraints, brides may want to consider the offerings of rental services that provide designer dresses for a fraction of their retail costs.

For the topper, the bride may prefer a traditional veil. Depending upon the design of the gown, you can choose any length, from the tip of your chin (birdcage) to a cathedral veil that will trail at your back and along the floor. If a veil doesn’t suit your style, there are plenty of alternatives, including bejeweled barrettes and headbands, or a single, gorgeous bloom tucked into your hair. This year, one beautiful trend is the floral crown created with blossoms in the bride’s chosen colors.
When it comes to shoes, Cowie has a few more tips. Avoid that sinking feeling at your garden wedding with a pair of elegant flats; sandals may be just right for nuptials on the beach. If you’re an ace in heels and can rock those stilettos all day and night, then go for it, but have a backup plan. Says Cowie, “Comfort is queen. If you want to dance until the wee hours, buy an extra pair of your wedding shoes, a half-size larger.”
TouchesChoosing jewelry and accessories to complete your look
Once you have the dress, you can select the rest of your ensemble. When it comes to perfecting a
look, experts like Cowie suggest taking a balanced approach. If the gown is elaborate, it won’t need extra frills. If it has simple lines and just a few embellishments, adding some sparkle and details with accessories makes sense.
Platinum and diamonds have been the timeless choice in wedding bands, but this year tastemakers say color is in the mix. Cowie is seeing more settings that alternate pave diamonds with rubies, emeralds and sapphires. For a forever memory, you may want to match the colored stones in your wedding band to the color palette of your wedding.

couples to keep track of their guests and organize their travel arrangements.
Cowie strongly recommends creating a hashtag for your wedding. As for do-it-yourself video, he reports that some brides are cannily concealing a GoPro camera in their bouquet for some great memories from her point of view. But remember, oversharing on social platforms can detract from the personal and intimate qualities that make a wedding special. You don’t want to post a photo of your gown before your big day, and you want everyone’s attention at the ceremony.
“People should be present at the important moments,” says Cowie. “Tuck a note in the program to let your guests know that you will share your professional photos and videos of the ceremony. You don’t want Uncle Bob holding up his tablet for a photo as you say your vows.”
In this era of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, there are many ways to communicate your plans for the
wedding and share information about the event. But social media is not just about posting images and comments; services in the digital landscape can help you organize many details. To make the most of these web-based platforms, here are some dos and don’ts from Cowie.
Couples can find inspiration from numerous sources. Thanks to sites like Pinterest, you’ll find ideas for every facet of your event—from the dress down to the table favors. But even better, your smartphone, tablet and laptop can become valuable tools for wedding planning. Start with a website—and no, you don’t have the time to do this yourself. Hire an all-in-one service such as Appy Couple, which develops sites that do more than just share news. They also allow

vision. Once you’ve chosen a designer, share with him or her your photo file, which should include pictures of the venue, your dress, ideas for the table and food. Together you can create a concept that works within your budget. “Everything will go more smoothly if you already have the big picture and its main elements clear in your mind,” says Cowie.
If your floral allowance is limited, Cowie’s advice is to spend on a few lavish and memorable arrangements that will be displayed in key locations: the check-in table, for example, or other places where friends and family will gather. Or, consider using inexpensive flowers in creative ways. Carnations, for instance, with their fluffy blooms and range of gorgeous colors, can look special and dramatic when used in abundance.
Accents for that most important arrangement—the bride’s bouquet—can include more than ribbons and lace. Add a bit of sparkle with rhinestones, sequins or shimmering vintage pins to create a standout accessory.H opefully, you’ll set a wedding
date in the same season as your favorite flower. Lilacs
in early spring, or lilies of the valley, have an unforgettable fragrance and look gorgeous. Peonies lend the same qualities later in the season. Your personal flowers—those you use in the bridal bouquet, the groom’s boutonniere and your attendants’ blooms—can set the theme for the displays that decorate the ceremony and reception.
Choose a floral designer with whom you can establish a rapport. When meeting with pros, review portfolios of projects and find out what types of props each florist has available to compose your

talking. Whether your music is live or recorded, you can set the right note by thinking through the various parts of your wedding: ceremony, cocktails, dinner and dancing. Get a feel for what your guests are hoping for via your social media connections. Let friends and family vote for their preferences, and don’t forget to consider the tastes of your parents and the friends they’ve invited. You want something memorable for everyone. Cowie suggests creating a musical cue sheet for the bandleader or DJ, so that you can relax while they direct the fun.
Light It Up You’ve figured out all the main elements: dress and accessories, your attendants, the flowers, the ceremony and the reception. But don’t neglect ambience. Cowie advises couples to spend a portion of their budget on lighting to create the right visual mood for the party, particularly if it’s an evening event. >
O nce you’ve decided on the broad strokes, or the big picture, it’s time to think about the special
touches that make a wedding uniquely yours, including music, ambience and mementos. Cowie has some suggestions for you to consider.
Music and Entertainment Timing is everything when it comes to entertainment at your reception. You want dance tunes when it’s time to kick up your heels and more subdued background music when your guests are eating and

Consider using clusters of votive candles on tables. Cool effects can be created with colored spots and gobo lights that project patterns on the walls and ceiling of the reception space. There are also lights that change with the tempo of the party. These are the details that can make your event magical. At the height of summer, or at a destination daytime wedding on the beach, plan for a little shade. If everything’s in the open air, don’t forget strategically placed sunscreen and well-positioned umbrellas.
Gift Guide Both bride and groom will want to select gifts for their attendants. Here’s another opportunity for the two of you to be creative and have a little fun. For bridesmaids, a little bling—a charm for a bracelet, necklace, or earrings with stones in the wedding colors—is often
appreciated. As the couple prepares for their ceremony, a lovely tradition is to have special presents delivered to each other. This is the time for gifting a family heirloom or for giving a signature piece of jewelry that can be passed down to your own children.
A Guiding Hand Even if you’ve done all the planning and preparation yourselves, you may not want to orchestrate all the details on your special day. Cowie counsels couples to hire a planner or tap a trusted friend to watch over the proceedings during the big event. “It helps to have a professional planner or a good friend with excellent organizational skills to shepherd all the elements and players throughout the day,” says Cowie. “You don’t want to have to run your own party. You want to enjoy it.” T

Food for
B ecause your wedding will be one of the biggest parties of your life, you’ll want the food to be special.
It starts with a great caterer—again, vet your prospects before you choose—and then the fun begins. When planning the menu for a formal meal, Cowie advises his clients to start in the middle.
“Choose your main course, determine its ingredients and keep it fairly simple. A perfectly prepared piece of meat or chicken will taste superior to an overdone item in a crust that might go soggy by the time it’s served,” says Cowie. Add flavors with your starter and side dishes, but do plan around the main menu item. Once you have the key flavor, you can select the right complements.
Formal sit-down dinners are the norm at traditional weddings, but these days, couples have a lot of different palates to satisfy: guests prefer everything
from vegan dishes to gluten-free fare. How do you please everyone with just a couple of menu choices? Cowie and his culinary experts suggest the curated food station, which is designed to meet the public’s growing taste for tapas and little plates. These provide attendees with an opportunity to sample a rich selection of fine dishes, in small portions. Along with great wine pairings for each station, this setup gives guests the opportunity to browse and chat while they select their meal items. Some people prefer this arrangement to a long, snaking buffet line and endless chafing dishes. > B

A suggestion for casual receptions is one or more gourmet food trucks. The most desirable dishes prepared in these mobile kitchens is fresh, locally produced and often organic. Farm-to-table has come to the wedding table in a big way, says Cowie. “Couples aren’t just asking for organic greens,” he says, “they’re inquiring about the specific farm their greens will come from. Caterers are working with local farms to create the best menu and
experience for the new-age bride and groom.”
And then there’s the cake. If you decide to skip expensive, handmade sugar flowers and opt for real blossoms, remember these two words: organic and edible. If guests want to eat the flowers, then select delicate, sunny-hued nasturtiums. Sunflowers and daylilies—available in hundreds of colors—are also edible. Don’t forget to also consider the scent of a flower before you choose one for your cake.
Another trend that’s been spotted by Cowie’s team with increasing frequency is the mini-cake. It’s a small but beautiful confection, sometimes decorated in the bride’s colors, that can be used as the centerpiece for each table. It’s sliced at dessert time, along with a larger cake for the bride and groom to cut.
The chefs and bakers who work with Cowie have one more important tip for the bride and groom: Don’t forget to sit down and eat. It’s your party, so enjoy! TO

in light similar to what will be used at your wedding to determine if everything will look just right.
It’s also a good idea to cut and color your hair two weeks before the big day so you have time for adjustments, if needed. On your wedding day, have your manicure and pedicure freshly done. A light tissue massage can be very refreshing and certainly helps with any “day of” jitters. If feasible, ask your stylist to stay after the ceremony to help remove your veil, >
RadianceMany people will tell you it’s not
difficult to look your best on the big day since all the joy you feel
will show in your face. But even a natural beauty wants to make that happy glow even more radiant.
Skin, Hair and Makeup Make sure your wedding preparations include a regimen to keep your skin smooth and supple, your hair shining and healthy. Make facials a part of your regular beauty routine a few months ahead of the wedding. For the big day, choose a hair and makeup team with style and a great reputation. Review the team’s portfolio to determine if their work resonates with you. A good fit here is as important as the cut of your dress. A few weeks before the wedding, says Cowie, do a test run of your hair and makeup with your gown and accessories. “It’s actually non-negotiable,” says Cowie. “No bride wants to discover on her wedding day that her stylist’s concept just won’t work or that she’s allergic to her makeup.” At the same time, take some photographs

if you’re wearing one, and freshen your hair for the reception.
Stay Healthy and Fit Cowie advises couples to hit the gym if they’re not already hooked on a fitness regimen. “If you want to look your best, start regular workouts—even if you’ve neglected them before. This can be a wonderful way for the two of you to get ready for the big day together.” Yoga can also be a great way to unwind when the stress of wedding planning is added to everyday responsibilities at home and work. And here’s another tip from Cowie: Make the routine stick; buy each other fitness tracking bracelets that sync to
smartphones and keep you both on your exercise regimens.
The Big Walk Most brides will confess that one of the tensest moments of the day occurs just before their grand entrance. After all the preparation, you’re waiting for the signal to start your walk. You don’t want to hide the gorgeous bodice of your gown with your bouquet or look anything less than the beautiful bride you’ve always hoped to be. Here’s a tip from Cowie: “Before you walk down the aisle, take a deep breath, pull your shoulders back, raise your chin and lower your bouquet. You’ll look fabulous!” M

Great
Budget Accordingly Even if the sky’s the limit for your budget, you can find ways to travel more cost efficiently. If you travel for business, you can accumulate airline miles. This way, they can be put toward the honeymoon. Some couples will even charge the wedding to a credit card that offers airline miles; they accumulate upgrades and even tickets.
Hit the Road After the wedding celebration, try to leave for the honeymoon right away. It’s the perfect way to unwind and start your lives together. You’ve just thrown the best party ever. Why not celebrate your success?
Getaways
You’ll work hard to plan your wedding, but when it’s all over, there will be time for your first
vacation as a married couple. Because even the most remote islands and mountains are within reach of savvy travelers, there’s no shortage of places to go. Only your budget and schedule can limit the choices. As a world traveler himself—he’s logged more than 12 million air miles in his career—Cowie pulls from his own experiences when talking with couples about planning their honeymoons. Following are some of his top tips.
Plan Ahead Don’t put a glitch in your getaway plans. Prepare for the trip far in advance of the wedding day. If you’re flying to distant ports, for instance, make sure you have visas and passports in order, and vaccinations if you need them.
Do Your Research Check out travel websites that offer great deals for premium destinations; jetsetter.com is just one of many.
