Harvest PartyCome one, come all, to the Harvest Party on Wednesday, November 7th! (This will be in lieu of a Halloween Party this year, since Halloween is on a Wednesday.)

From 5:45-6:30 join us for a Harvest Feast of hot dogs, chips, punch, & dessert. From 6:30-7:30 you can play games like Pumpkin Roll, Pig Races, and Cotton Ball Relay. There will also be crafts like Turkeys, Scarecrows, Mosaic Cornucopias, and Leaf Placemats. Every child will also receive a Grab Bag! Don’t miss out on the fun. See you on November 7th.

If you have any questions you can call Diana Styles (402-706-5296), Cindy Gasper (402-630-9486), or Lorraine Henry (402-669-0971).

YOUTH TRIPIn the coming months you will be approached by a member of the youth asking for your support. This question may come on November 18 to join us for a soup luncheon. It may come during the holidays to join us for Tea on January 3, 2013. It may come in the form of free will donation during our Game Night on January 18, 2013. Maybe even to purchase stock in their mission trip. Well, it has been debated for a year. Talked about to excitedly and finally a decision has been made. Dates are set. The venue is chosen. The check is in the mail. Now it is time to get serious about earning the money needed for such a worthy trip. What is the trip you ask?

We will be leaving July 19, 2013 and traveling to Bennett County, South Dakota. There will be spending a week working with the Youth Works organization. They say, “Surrounded by the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Sioux Indian reservations, the town of Martin, South Dakota offers unique ac-cess to the Lakota culture. Just like the reservations it borders, however, the town struggles with poverty and the sometimes-tense relations between ethnic groups. Your group will shine the light of Christ in this community through home improvement projects and by serving the local children and elderly residents.” The program is specifically geared for youth and tweens and we are very excited.

So, when you are asked by a youngster to support this cause, be generous. Also, if you have a chance to buy stock, take it! We will treat you to a great dinner and show upon our return, a show so heartwarming it will be like you were there.

If you have a youth who would like to join our group and have the opportunity to serve in mission with us, please call the office so they can be included. Our group is very welcoming of newcomers. We serve at least quarterly and have fun events while learning about Christ often.

Thank you,Bob Austin

S T E W A R D S H I P & F I N A N C E

This past week our family was reminded how suddenly life can be cut short and how tragedy can impact the lives or people who are close to us. Last Monday, I attended the funeral of a man who I grew up with in my hometown. He was 4 years older than me, but his family lived 2 miles from our house and we spent many birthdays and other special events together. His brother is a year older than I am and we used to play football and basketball together.

This man had cheated death twice, having been nearly killed in a car accident 37 years ago and in a farm accident about 10 years ago. He was fatally injured in a car accident on October 4th, but he lived 59 years and was able to raise a family.

This past Friday night a young man, Michael Tran, was injured in a car accident where a drunk driver hit him broadside and he is currently on life support. This young man is a friend of Samantha’s boyfriend, is 18 years old and just graduated from high school last year. He may not get a chance to realize any dreams or have an impact on others.

This past week has reinforced for me the need to do things that God is asking of me now. I may not be given the opportunity to do them next year, next week or even tomorrow. We do not know when we will be taken from this earthly life. We need to count our blessings and evaluate what type of steward we are. What will be our legacy?

As we approach the end of 2012, we all have an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to Christ. We can maintain or increase our giving so the God’s work can be done. If you were to die tomorrow, what would your legacy be? Would you have made a difference?

Please be generous in your gifts to God!

Helping HandsYour youth have been very busy this past month. A special thank you to Camp Fontanelle for inviting us to help with the corn maze. We traveled 22 strong October 14 and had blast helping out.

We also would like to thank the UMM team for inviting our youth to help serve on “Stand up Against Poverty” day on October 7. Our group was assigned to help out at the new location of the Blue Flamingo. There we helped cleanup both inside and out making light work of the commanding list of to do’s the staff there had.

Thank you, Bob Austin

ELECTION DAYWe stand on the cusp of another presidential election. An election that may decide very core changes to our society. How we live, eat, socialize and pray. How we interact with our community both locally and globally. How we educate, feed and raise our children. It is interesting as I look at the list above the amount of stress points that are touched upon. No other time in my life can I recall this many things being debated at one time.

What this has done is back everyone into a corner. What’s your corner? Union, parent, tea party, christian, alternative lifestyle, green, social conservative, animal lover, economic conservative, occupy, gay & lesbian , or another I forgot to mention? All this has done is inflame tempers and stop honest and constructive conversation. Never have so many been so angry with each other over so little difference in opinions.

The election season is doing nothing to bring anyone together. Quite the opposite, we continue to sever into these splinter groups and argue over our petty differences. Small inconsequential details become log jams stopping all progress on everything. This then rolls downhill and already partisan politicians are forced to make pacts and promises to never compromise on an issue, regardless of the benefits elsewhere.

Pastors have been preaching and teaching how to get along in our church since I have been listening. Countless verses of compassion and temperance have been quoted and discussed from the pulpit. Sunday school classes have focussed on Jesus’ teachings of compassion. Have we learned nothing at all? Is this the way we live our faith?

I challenge my fellow christians to reorganize their priorities. Stop listening to the pundits explaining our differences and focus on our commonalities. List the importance of your social interactions. God, family, community, country and world. Wesley tried to teach the 3 rules to live your life. Do good. Do no harm. Stay in love with God. No politician in this cycle is bringing us together. Instead they throw mud and lies. Stop getting angry and start mending.

When you are confronted by a political zealot and political daggers are thrown because of whatever camp others think you belong to, reply in a loving way. Remind them we are together in Christ. Common as Omahans. Spirited as Huskers. United as Americans. We are not that different. Our goals are very similar. Only by doing this will the misguided souls in our nations beltway change how they do the USA’s business. Only then will they look at what is best for the country, states, local communities, and it’s people. Until then, they will continue to exploit negativity and let that evil fester in everyone’s hearts. Go forth and do good, spread laughter, ooze positivity smothering the lies back to the gutter where it belongs.

God bless, Bob Austin

A huge shout out goes to the 20 adults and 6 youth/children that went out into the community to assist Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging and 5 of their clients. Most of the work was completed by three groups of adults and youth outside cleaning up yards, removing trees, hauling away brush, untangling trees/weeds from chainlink fence and trimming bushes and trees. Inside we had one group of volunteers assist an elderly lady with washing her windows, washing her drapes and cleaning out some cupboards. The final group assisted a gentleman that was moving from his home to assisted living sort through some of his belongings and determine their fate (goodwill, trash or moving on to the new home).

It was a beautiful day and we accomplished a lot in three hours. The total volunteer hours for this project was 79.5. That is HUGE! Thanks again! Thanks to everyone that supported the red basket that day as well. The money was used to purchase garden gloves, sanitary gloves, trash bags and moving supplies.

October we will be starting an ongoing outreach with YES (Youth Emergency Services) and the Open Door Mission. We will be asking for volunteers to help with these two projects.

YES PROJECT

The second Wednesday of each month we will be cooking up a meal for approximately 30 homeless or at-risk teens in the metro. On Thursday we will be delivering the meals to the outreach center for their Thursday meal. We will start with once a month and see how it goes from there. This project will need volunteers to shop, cook and deliver so please watch for sign up sheets.

OPEN DOOR MISSION PROJECT

The last Sunday of each month we will be heading over to the Open Door Mission to serve lunch immediately after 2nd service. This project will consist of serving and cleaning up after. There won’t be any cooking here. All ages are welcome and we will need between 10-40 volunteers each week.

The purpose of the Beyond The Walls team is to organize the events; however, the entire church is needed to carry out the events. We are always looking for ideas so if you have any please share them with us!
