For Germany and its economy the production sector is of decisive

importance; nearly every second job is linked to production. The

German industrial sector intends to invest an annual 40 billion

euros into industry 4.0 applications until 2020. With increasing

digitalization and stronger networking efficiency may be expected

to rise by 3.3 percent per year and costs to decrease by 2.6 percent

per year while the quality of production processes will improve.

Reliable and safe access to information is a central issue for the

future of the economy and society. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

and partners from the industry supported by the federal govern-

ment initiated a project to create an international open data space

for the industry – the Industrial Open Data Space. Access and

use is to be granted to all enterprises complying with the joint

standards.

The networking of production and business processes is multifar-

ious. At HANNOVER MESSE, Fraunhofer researchers showcase

different projects, for example how secure networks of tomorrow

may be designed and implemented or what production processes

may look like in the future. In a save test environment, they simu-

late hacker attacks under real-time conditions and analyze exist-

ing networks. By means of assistant tools such as modeling and

conformity tests, they facilitate the introduction of standardized

communication between production systems and production IT.

Intelligent material systems improve working conditions by reduc-

ing vibrations and noise. Another topic are “smart materials”:

integrated in glass facades, they reduce the energy consumption

for a building’s climate control. In machine tools they provide for

predictive maintenance and enable “self-maintaining facilities”.

So come and visit our joint Fraunhofer booth “Safe and Net-

worked Production” in Hall 2. In other halls, we furthermore

present Fraunhofer developments in the fields of adaptronics,

surface engineering, and simulation. This booklet will inform

you about our solutions for your company!

Sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Reimund Neugebauer

President Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

The fourth industrial revolution is already under way, the borders

between the virtual and the real world become increasingly blurred.

“Industry 4.0” connects products and production systems to the

internet and enables cost-efficient and eco-friendly production.

For Germany as an industrial nation it is important to lead the way

for these developments to remain attractive as a production loca-

tion and further develop its economic power. Therefore, numerous

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research activities have been supporting

the industry for many years in taking the next steps towards a net-

worked production. For their success, the human factor remains

of essential importance despite progressing virtualization. With

the latest technologies in the fields of human-machine interaction

and with a comprehensive training program, Fraunhofer essentially

contributes to the further development of Germany as a location

for production and investment.

At HANNOVER MESSE 2015, ten Fraunhofer establishments

present exhibits to the visitor in the fields of safe production

and secure networks, human-machine interaction, resource and

energy efficiency, networking, as well as career and training.

With increasing interconnections between the virtual world and

real production processes, IT security is of increasing significance.

In particular the protection of production facility networks against

external attacks is a mission critical factor to actually establish the

“Future Factory” in production plants. Fraunhofer shows solutions

for uncovering security holes, eliminating error sources, and guar-

anteeing secure networks.

huMaN-MachiNE iNTEracTioN

An exact matching of production processes and employees is

decisive for successfully implementing the trendsetting idea of an

“industry 4.0”. Thus, it is still humans occupying the central role

in the “Future Factory”. Be it state-of-the-art surveying technol-

ogy or revolutionary test methods for quality assurance – all of

it serves the purpose of an ideal interface between humans and

machines.

Adaptronics is an active structure technology based on the inte-

gration of sensory and actuatory functions in mechanical struc-

tures. Commonly, the term of Smart Structure Technology is used

in this context. It aims at optimizing a product through specifically

influencing its mechanical structural characteristics. In the focus

are the active control of vibration, noise, and deformation as well

as the monitoring of component characteristics. Dimensioning a

system, usually multi-functional material systems are used (e.g.

electromechanical converters and piezoceramics). This enables the

design of sensory and actuatory material systems that – integrated

into mechanical components – enable the control of disturbing

energies.

The Adaptronics joint booth introduces the latest developments

in the fields of these intelligent material systems. Together with its

partners from research and industry, the Fraunhofer Adaptronics

Alliance will also present trends and future issues in addition to

present products.

The booth will showcase, among others, exemplary applications

in the fields of vibration and noise reduction, and smart materials.

As a cross section technology, layer and surface engineering is a

key starting point for innovation in a number of industries. By

coating and modifying the surfaces of different materials products

may not only be improved, some even owe their functionality to

this process.

Fraunhofer works with more than 20 institutes in the fields of

surface engineering and thin films. The scientists there examine

different aspects of thin film and process development as well as

a wide spectrum of technologies about simulation, layer character-

ization, and quality assurance.

At the joint booth real-life examples and innovative approaches

for applications are in the focus. Major topics are how to reduce

friction and protect against wear, heat insulation and nonstick

coatings of components and tools, multifunctional nano-coatings

of metal bands, thin film sensor systems and micro-structuring, as

well as the functionalization of surfaces and coating of particles

with atmospheric pressure plasmas.

The ocean offers numerous ways of utilization from the coast

to the deep sea. It has always been a frequently used route of

transport for worldwide freight traffic and is also used as a high-

quality food source. With climate change and energy transition

the oceans´ significance for mankind keeps on increasing: They

are the basis for offshore wind power stations, oil recovery, and

perspectively also a supplier for mineral raw materials.

For a, in particular, sustainable utilization of the ocean, man needs

technologies that take account of the special conditions such as

high pressures, visibility conditions and currents underwater as well

as of the rough climate above water. For the use underwater, the

technology needs to fulfil highest requirements depending on the

area of use.

Fraunhofer provides an insight into the requirements underwater

technology has to fulfil for different users from aquaculture to mar-

itime mining and shows how Fraunhofer research can contribute

to the development of high-tech solutions for underwater use. The

spectrum ranges from sensor systems to prototypic construction of

entire remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles to

visual computing.

Environmental and climate protection, resource shortage, and

demographic change have a growing impact in the form of an in-

crease in stipulations, costs, and structural changes. The industry,

thus, has to face the basic question how to produce in the future

and which resources to use.

The focus is on resources that have a sustained effect on the world

of production and cause companies to apply new approaches.

For the future of production it is important to use material in its

entirety and to close material and energy cycles.

This is where Fraunhofer´s lighthouse project “E3 Production”

starts: By providing for a design of production and factories that

is energy and resource-efficient, emission-neutral and adapted

to humans, trendsetting, integrative approaches are turned into
