All About Mrs. Klinger

• I grew up in the small town of Williamstown, PA with my parents and two sisters, not too far from Hershey.

• I am a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Elementary Education.

• I began teaching 19 years ago. This is my fifth year at Marshall where I have taught 2nd and 3rd grades.

• I live in Newark with my husband, Dan; our 6th grade daughter, Caroline; and our son, Owen, a 4th grader.

• I enjoy watching sports, cooking shows, reading, and listening to music.

Curriculum

• Reading: NEW! Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Series-Journeys. Skill-based, 90 Minute Reading Block. (45 minutes of whole group instruction and 45 minutes of small group instruction daily. Benchmark, Strategic, Intensive Groups.

• Reading Intervention- 8:30-9:00 daily.

• Spelling: Word list is given on a Monday and test on Friday. Practice spelling rule for that week.

• Writing: Our writing program is embedded in the Reading Series. I also have each student use a Poetry Journal and a Second Grade Memory Book Journal.

Book, a Homework Practice Book, and a Re-teaching & Skills Workbook. – Problem Solving, Time, Money, Computation,

• Science: Foss Science Kits (interactive, hands-on)-Unit 1 –Soils (Worms and Composting)-Unit 2 – Balance and Weighing-Unit 3 – Insects – Life Cycles

• Social Studies Units: - Living in a Community, Our Government, Looking at the Earth, Learn About People, Past and Present, People at Work.

Birthday Celebrations

• It’s a pleasure to celebrate with your child so feel free to send a birthday treat or snack if you would like, but be sure we have enough for the whole class.

• Please include paper plates, napkins or any supplies needed for serving your treat. Keep it simple because time is limited.

Star of the Week

• Students names are randomly drawn for this special occasion until everyone gets a turn.

• A folder will come home requesting photos, a music cd, and a form for you and your child to complete .

• This is a great time for our class to learn more about your child and what he/she likes.

• On Friday, the star shares their items and his/her classmates write a story about the Star. We create a Star of the Week Book that they may keep!

Field Trips

• Second Grade will visit:– Ashland Nature Center in the Fall.– The Grand Opera House in Wilmington to see The

Delaware Symphony perform Peter and The Wolf on November 8.

– The DuPont Theater on February 23rd to see Ramona Quimby.

– Dayett Mills in the Spring.

• PTA covers $10 for each child to attend trips and parents are asked to cover the balance.

• Permission slips will be sent home closer to the events and I will request chaperones at that time.

A.R. & First In MathAccelerated Reader/A.R. Program - Students take

comprehension quizzes during the school day based upon library books they have read. They earn points towards their goal. There are school and classroom rewards for students who meet their goal. (There are also vocabulary quizzes for each book, but students do not earn points when taking those.)

First in Math.com -Students Earn stickers (points) for playing math games to practice skills. I reward the Player of the Day with 10 Core Bucks. Students earning at least one sticker daily receive a core buck.

Support From Home

• Have your child read aloud to you regularly.

• Encourage use of First in Math and A.R.

• Complete homework and return to school the next day.

• Practice math facts, allow opportunities to use coins and money with your child, and have an analog clock at home for practice telling time.

• State testing (DCAS) is in the Spring and is done on the computer. It is important that they are familiar with using the mouse and keyboard.

Student Work Folder

• I have placed a manila folder with a sample of your child’s work from various subject areas in your child’s desk. Feel free to look through it, but it needs to remain at school with me! Please do not take it home with you tonight.

• Complete MY CHILD’S FAVORITES, and leave it on your child’s desk for them to see how well you did completing the quiz on how well you know them!

• Dibels – Fluency- Basis of Reading groups. Avg.-45 wpm now, 90 wpm goal-Spring. (Currently 8 kids at 100wpm or more!)

• Spelling Inventory – 26 word test. Phonics/Spelling Patterns

• STAR Test –Shows Grade Equivalent Level which is used to create A.R. Semester Goal.

• FRY List- Second 200 SightWord List• Math Diagnostic Inventory Test• DCAS – 2nd Grade is tested only in the Spring.• Report Card (EP, MP, NP, BP) – 3 Trimesters
