    These are to cert i fy that a Treaty of fr iendship,alliance and nutual support which is to endure for ever, hasbeen entered into between His Highness Datoh Tunongong Abu-bakar Sri lrtaharajah Ibn Datoh Tumongong Daing Ibrahin Sril,taharajah, Sovereign of Johore of the one Part, and His High-ness Datoh Bandahara Tun Korais Sri l{aharajah Ibn RajahBandahara Tun Tahir Sri l,laharajah of Pahang of the otherPart, both parties being in perfect accord and consentingto order to regulate the countr ies of Pehangand Johore,their boundaries, jurisdictions and governments to preventdisputes hereafter, to strengthen each other and to per-petuate the amity existing between then, it is agreed anddecla red as fo l lows:.First. - There shall be perpetual peace and fr iendshipbetween the parties to this Treaty and their descendants andthe countr ies of Johore and Pahang.Second. - Should the country of Johore or any of itsdependerrcies be attacked by enemies at any tine hereafter,either fron without or within, His Highness Datoh BandaharaTun Korais Sri Maharajah Ibn Rajah Bandahara Tun Tahir Sr iMaharajah of Pahang and his successors shal l , with al l speed,and with whatever nunber of followers and rnaterials of warhe nay be able to colrunand, asten to the assistance of HisHighness Datoh Tunongong Abubakar Sr i Maharaja Ibn Datoh

    Fourth. - Whereas doubts have been expressed by othersas to the boundary between the two countries of Johore andpahang, i t is hereby declared that the River Indow has beenheretofore and shall continue hereafter to be the boundaryon the Mainland, and that the Island of Pulo Tioman and allIslands to the south of the latitude of its northern extrenityare, and shal l be, port ions of the Terr i tory of Johore, andall Islands to the north of that lati tude are, and shall be,port ions of the Terr i tory of Pahang-

    Fifth. - ft " subjects of each of the contracting partiesshal l be enti t led to trade in the terr i tory of the other, andto export and import merchandise upon the same terns and withthe sime privi leges as the subjects of such terr i tory, andneither party nor their respective successors wil l inposeheavier taxes, inports, or duties, at any t ine hereafter,upon the subjects or goods of subjects of the other, thanupon his or their own subjects or the goods of his or theirown subjects.Sixth. - The parties hereto agree that subjects of thenrit i lE-Covernnent shal1 be enti t led to trade in their re-spective terr i tor ies upon the same enns and with the sameprivi leges as the subjects of the said parties thereto.Seventh.- The parties hereto agree and declare forthemselves and their respective successors that should anydispute or difference arise between them or their successorsat iny time hereafter, eit\er with regard to this Treaty orthe uratters contained in it , or with regard to any other

    matter or thing whatever, whether national, pol i t ical, orpr ivate, the same shall be and is hereby referred to' thelr iendly mediation and sett lenent of the Brit ish Government,whose award or decision shall be final and binding on bothpar t ies .Eighth. - The parties hereto agree and engage each withthe ofand their successors that neither shal l enter intoany alliance or naintain any correspondence with any foreignpower or potentates whatsoever without the knowledge and con-sent of the other and of the said Brit ish Government.Done at Singapore this Nineteenth day of Dul-Hajee inthe Mahonedan year One Thousand Two hundred and seventy-eight (corresponding with the Seventeenth day of June in theChiistian yeai One Thousand Eight hundred and sixty-two) inthe presence of the Honourable Colonel Orfeur Cavenagh, zGoveinor of pr ince of Walest Island, Singapore and Malacca.-
