This year marks the 35th anniversary

o Hang Around Victor Day. Since1976, the event has showcased service

organizations, schools, churches, mer-

chants and everything special about

Victor, New York. Besides showcasing the

town’s amenities, at the heart o Victor

Day is a sense o community.

“For me the estival is about seeing old

riends and creating goodwill in the

community,” says Susan Stehling, ormer

Victor Chamber President and long-time

organizer o Hang Around Victor Day.

“That this event has gone on or so many

years is a good commentary on the Victorcommunity.”

The estival got its start as part o the

town’s Centennial Celebration in 1976.

Ater a successul event, the Victor

Chamber o Commerce decided to takeover and turn the town celebration into

an annual estival to support awareness

o the local merchants and services. Thisyear, 100% o the Main Street merchants

are involved in Hang Around Victor Day.

Hang Around Victor Day rst took placeon Main Street and the old Town Hall

parking lot. As the town o Victor grew,

so did the estival. Mead Square Park

soon became another estival area. Theestival now stretches along Main Streetrom Maple Avenue to Church Street with

areas behind Village Hall, Mead Square

Park and the parking lot surrounding

the park. Last year, the estival added a

special area just or kids in the Village Hall

parking lot section o the estival.

Hang Around Victor Day has evolved

over the last 35 years and included

many interesting and diverse activities.

The 2000 event included a “MillenialCelebration Street Dance” and reworks.

In 2007, the Town Hall time capsule was

opened exposing artiacts buried in

1900 and 1936. The Battle o the Bands

held in 2009 included a text message

voting system that received 3,000 votes.Other eatured activities have included

a Farmer’s Market, parades down

Maple Avenue, Victor souvenirs and an

Oktoberest.

The Victor Chamber o Commerce is a

membership-driven business organiza-tion that promotes connections be-

tween businesses, provides resources

or businesses to grow and addresses

merchant concerns by advocating positive

change. Their close working relationshipwith the town and village allows them to

work together toward goals in economic

development and promotion o Victor asa historical tourism destination.

• Monthly after-hours networking events

• Monthly educational seminars. Recent

topics: energy-saving, customer service

and on-the-job training programs.

• The Chamber connects businesses to

Ontario County Programs such as Finger

Lakes Workorce, which provides humanresources advice.

• The Chamber recently made

introductions between the Ganondagan

building committee and NYS Assembly-man Sean T. Hanna, which will help them

move orward with a building project.
