Hands On Greek Landscape!: Mr. Martell & Mr. Arbogast's 7th grade Social Studies students took part in a two-phase experiential exercise. Students first choose settlement sites in a simulated landscape of ancient Greece to understand the influence of geography on settlement and culture. They then explored ways for their settlements to survive. Afterward, students read about the early settlement of Greece in their books and made connections with their experiences. Science Boat Challenge: On Friday, September 6 th , the 8th Grade Teams competed in the first annual Box Boat Challenge at the Dover City Pool. In this 10 day mini-unit, students connected science, math, and PLTW skills combined with team building to construct a boat from cardboard and duct tape that one student would paddle across Dover Pool. The project started with students using a Design Brief (PLTW) which outlined the problem, procedures, constraints, and materials for the project. Students created orthographic drawings with dimensional views of the top, front, and side of their boat. These drawings were used as a blueprint for construction. The Math piece got tricky as students calculated the volume in cubic feet needed for the boat to support the weight of their captain. Students discovered that 1 cubic foot of cardboard will support 60 pounds. At this point the students utilized Science to explore the relationship of weight to cubic feet by testing their calculations out in class, experimenting with concepts of buoyancy and water displacement, and collaborating with group members to hypothesize a boat design that will float their weight. The activity reached beyond the classroom walls with the challenge of actually building and sailing their box boat.

Are you academic active? Hopefully the start of the school year has been smooth and welcomed! It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through the first nine weeks! Midterm is upon us and what have we learned? Yes WE not just our students. Being engaged daily with your student’s education builds student confidence and academic strength. If your student knows that you are interested in their day, there is a higher probability that they will actually tell you about the day’s events even if the day was challenging. Try using the following suggestions to increase your understanding of your student’s school experience:

Have them explain one detail from each one of their classes. Ask them about their favorite memory from the start of the school year! Don’t accept “Fine” as an answer to “How was school?” Try asking them to tell you about two positive

events from the day. If you have not viewed your student’s progress book, I am encouraging you to look at it with them. Have them show you google classroom and their agenda book. Have them write down events they will be participating in for the rest of this 9 weeks either by a list or

on a calendar. Discuss friendships. Ask about negative interactions with other students. If you have questions or concerns, contact teachers or myself. 330-364-7125
