Wow! Looks like we could be in for a scorcher this year. Bring out the barbies and lets hope that we can enjoy the sunshine throughout the summer holi-days.

Once again we have been busy at Handprints Maga-zine HQ and we have managed to bag loads of spe-cial offers and discounts for our readers, check out our centre pages for all our offers and a competition to win family tickets to Baby Loves Disco – the newest club-bing trend for kids and adults which launched in Bristol in May. Whilst we talk about busy our Lisa has achieved a phenomenal goal – she successfully trekked along the Great Wall of China to raise almost £4000 for the Have a Heart Charity fund. Much of this money will go directly to local community projects for children and its something that Lisa was passionate and committed

to – even when she was missing Stan and Toby at home with Dad and nursing blistering feet. So from all of us - WELL DONE LISA! You are amazing! You will never look at a cream tea in the same way again.

Enjoy this summer holiday edition, remember please tell advertisers that you read about them in Hand-prints Magazine and if you know a group who would like to receive copies of Handprints Magazine get in touch – our details are here.

Meet Oliver and Alison…

“During a routine 6 month check our Health Visitor men-tioned that she thought Oliver had a misaligned head and referred us to our local GP. Our GP referred us to a pediatrician for further tests and a possible MRI scan,

We were very worried and immediately went home and looked for Plagiocephaly on the internet, we found it is much more common that we thought. It was then that we found out about LOC, they had a very informative website and when we contacted them they gave us good advice and as they are based in Bristol they are local for us.

when Rachel, our consultant, diagnosed positional pla-giocephaly with no uncomfortable scans or intrusive test and offered us a non invasive treatment called Cra-

helmet to Oliver for approx 6 months.

Before our second appointment – less than 2 weeks later - we were very nervous and dreaded the thought of making Oliver wear a helmet but Oliver has adapted to his helmet with no problems. He has to wear it for 23 hours a day and is really not affected by it.

Oliver has been wearing his helmet for 2 months now and we have already seen a difference. We have to attend the clinic every few weeks for the treatment to be monitored and any adjustments made to the helmet.

We also found out that Oliver had a condition called tor-ticollis – a tightening of muscles in one side of the neck – which meant that he couldn’t fully rotate his head, so he would only lie in one position which resulted in the Flat-head syndrome.

The LOC advised us that it is important to treat this con-dition whilst improving the head shape in the helmet and we are doing this with regular neck stretches and Cranial Osteopathy.

We would highly recommend LOC. If any parents have any concerns about their child’s head they

-fer a free initial consultation. It is important to seek advice through your GP and referrals but we would advise any concerned parents to query that advice with an independent specialist like LOC. It’s also important not to leave it too long as the younger a baby is treated, the more effective and quicker the treatment can be”.

If you would like an opinion on your baby’s head shape you can e-mail pictures to: [email protected]

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

• Handprints Magazine • Summer 2010 www.handprintsmagazine.co.uk A Guide to Life with Under 5’s6

Q: I am looking to employee an au pair from France to look after my two children. Can I receive tax credit assistance for childcare provided by au pairs?

A: Provided the au pair is registered with the Childcare Approval Scheme (CAS) in England and you, as the employer, meet the other conditions, you are eligible to receive Working Tax Credit to help with the cost.

If you are employed, you can claim fi nancial support through your own employers supported childcare scheme to fund the cost of the Au Pair.

To qualify to receive tax credits, the

childcare must be provided by a carer registered with CAS, in the child’s own home or, for children aged over 7, on other domestic premises.

The process for registering the child carer for the CAS usually takes approximately 6 weeks and costs £99. For further information and advice on how to register your childcarer with CAS, together with details of the other benefi ts provided by the scheme talk to your nearest TaxAssist accountant.

Thank you to Ali Redwood for this advice.

At Debutots Early Years Drama we know how important it is to nurture young imaginations so that through productive creative play, children can make sense of the very big world they live in. We also know how hard it can be to keep young minds entertained during the school holi-days – which is why we are excited to announce our Debutots Holiday Workshops in August.

Our popular weekly and Saturday term time classes, are a unique blend of interactive story-

Sarah Nutchley a local Kumon instructor tells us what she loves about her job.Straight away, I have to confess that I am biased. I am a Kumon Instructor. I love what I do. I am a Kumon parent. I see what Kumon can do. I have been running the Bradley Stoke Kumon class for 12 years, and have helped

learners, improve their maths and literacy skills, and involve parents directly in their children’s education.

skills that they will have for life. My wish is for as many

Parents come to Kumon for all sorts of reasons; their child is struggling and needs to catch up, their child is bright and needs stretching, they want a structured program that they can follow at home, without having to invent hundreds of questions themselves, or maybe they have tried other extra tuition services but found them limited. In fact, there are as many reasons as there are children. Sarah runs Kumon Classes in Bradley Stoke. Later this summer, Sarah will be running her popular Kumon 2-week Free Trial for new children. Picnics! That’s what summers are meant for (well, apart from BBQ’s, but that’s another story!). So come the weekend and the sun is out, it seems rude not to go for a picnic. So we sort the sandwiches, make the soft drinks, rummage round the kitchen for the plastic mugs (that haven’t been used since

the car, in goes the food bags, then the blanket, the kid’s hats, spare clothes (just in case), suntan lotion and balls of various sizes. It takes all the planning and preparation of a small scale military expedition just to sit

and a castle (although not a real one), but it seems whenever we go there, it always seems like we’re sat in a wind tunnel. Great for kites, but not so good for picnics, but being stubborn English we put up with it. “It took all this effort to come

“I have two young children and tried many different blinds in my car and none of them stopped the moaning about the sun coming through the windows. So I took my car to Pentagon to have the windows tinted and I cannot recommend them enough. The service and quality of work was fantastic and most importantly no moans from the kids since! Worth every penny!” Jo, mum of Lucy & Abi

Excessive heat and glare from the sun can be very irritating, especially for young children in cars. Their prolonged discomfort can become very wearing for parents too, particularly on long journeys.

Traditional stick on blinds are ineffective at stopping the suns’ heat and glare, don’t cover the entire window and have an annoying habit of falling off.

For solar protection that really works,

contact Pentagon Auto-Tint. We have been specialists in car window tinting for over eighteen years and are approved by many leading motor manufacturers.

Our window films cut out up to 65% of solar heat, 95% of glare (perfect where DVD screens are used) and eliminate UV light, thereby protecting your children’s skin. What’s more in the event of a side impact, they add protection by holding together the broken shards of window glass.

For a perfect finish and a lifetime guarantee, which includes all installations, contact us for solar protection that really works.

Tantrums

Tantrums are natural for this age group, and any parent who claims their has never had a tantrum is lying. Don’t back down, no matter how bad the tantrum; see through your request. It will be far easier next time – clear and consistent boundaries are crucial for developing good behaviour.

Rewards

You can add a reward for good behav-iour, but don’t bribe: it weakens your po-sition. Never say ‘If you’re good, I’ll buy you some sweets’, because I guarantee that the next time you go shopping the child’s behaviour will be even worse.

Be consistent

The boundaries and rules you put in place must be clear and consistent. It is pointless not allowing Tom to play with his lorry on the table one day and then allowing it another day. Children can have very long memories and will quickly spot inconsistencies or injustice.

Parent, not friend

Don’t worry about being in your child’s ‘bad books’. We are all there some-times – it comes with territory of good parenting. Any parent who avoids enforcing rules or discipling their child because they don’t want to incur their child’s displeasure will have their au-thority and respect severely diminished in the child’s eyes.

Positive rather than negative

Always take a positive view, and as-sume that good behaviour in your child is the norm. Start each day afresh and do not hang on to past grievances. Children quickly move on and forget their bad behaviour. They want your praise for doing what is right, so they won’t dwell on instances when they didn’t get it right, and neither should you

Where is Handprints Bear?

Hello, I have been very busy. I have been danc-ing, splashing, meeting animal friends and to some of my favourite parks - I even met the police and almost got a ride in a police van!

I found some of the best parks ever in Bath at Victoria Park and in Bristol at Oldland Park. I love the climbing frames, slides, sand and just love being outdoors playing with my friends. They are so much fun, you should visit them soon.

During April term break we spent a week on a farm in Hartland and visited loads of local attrac-tions... Combe Martin Wildlife park being one of them (or dinosaur land as my friends Stan & Toby now call it) As you walk down into the park there’s loads green foliage, animal noises and wild roars and growls of animatronic dinosaurs - its quite a shock to the senses, we were squealing with delight so we knew we were in for a good day! There was so much to do we really lled the entire day and everyone had a blast, mum dad, Gran, Grandad, auntie Sharon, Stan 3 & Toby 2. We rode on all the bikes/scooters/rubber boats in the play park, we got wet on the train ride, saw a light show, an amazing sea lion display, fed and stroked the wallabies and shared our lunch with a lemur (they love apples!) and that was just our favourite bits! Whole-heartedly recommend Combe Martin Wild-life park as a great family day out.

I also got to join in the fun at the Bristol Family Information Service Fun in the Park day at Red-catch park in Knowle. The FIS do this every year and I went along with Charlotte and Thomas, I met lots of new friends and enjoyed bounc-ing in the ball pit and joining in with all the ac-tivities for free on the day. I met a policeman who let me look all around their car and van. Who knows what I will get up to during summer and autumn, I can’t wait for my summer holidays.

Local mum, Charlotte tells us why she has set up online support groups for Bristol mummies who may be looking for support with breastfeeding and becoming a new mum.

“I set up the Bristol Breastfeeding Mummies group on Facebook for mums who who are pregnant and don’t know if they want to feed or not. Its a support and information group which is regularly updated with news, events etc. We have 2 breastfeeding counsellors and peer supporters who are fully trained to help feeding mums

“I was adamant I wouldn’t breastfeed until I gave birth then I changed my mind and fed for 16 months and still feeding my 15 month old as never used bottles. I know it wasn’t easy for me and I relied on the support of other breastfeeding mums to help me which is why I set the group up for others.”

Mummies and Mummies to be of Bristol which has over 230 members already and not long been set up! I try to arrange monthly meet ups for mums with their babies/children at parks, soft play centres etc as well as nights out for the mums - bingo, cinema etc. I found being a 1st time mum very isolating and scary and used to use a online forum for Bristol mums which was very popular but sadly closed down but it was my lifeline to the out-side world. I update our site with local events, groups, news etc and also any links to websites.
