As I write this we are counting down the weeks until Christmas. In this edition we have plenty of seasonal cheer with craft and cookery ideas and a gift buying guide for the whole family and a big thanks to Simon and Becki at Blue Skies Photography who created our front cover image, we had great fun playing with all the toys from Jack and Rosie on the photo shoot.

Its been a busy couple of months at Handprints Magazine not least because one of our founders Lisa has moved to Devon. We are sad and sorry to say goodbye to Lisa and wish her all the best in her new life on the coast - we are not jealous (much).

Handprints Magazine will continue to bring our free magazine to readers in Bristol, Bath, North Somerset and South Glos and we have some very exciting plans for 2011.

So, fi rst off, as we have just celebrated our 2nd birthday we want to fi nd out what you want to read in Handprints Magazine and as we like to give something back we thought we would give you the chance to win £50 in Marks & Spencer shopping vouchers in time for Christmas – just log on to www.handprintsmagazine.co.uk for more information.

Welcome to Winter with Handprints Magazine

Handprints Magazine Autumn 2010 A Guide to Life with Under 5’s4

Tip 1: Rest when you can Get as much rest as you can before your baby arrives - don’t underestimate the effects of sleep deprivation after your baby is born.

Tip 2: Accept help Accept help when offered - from help with cleaning and the washing to a couple of hours babysitting so you can get a couple of hours sleep.

Tip 3: Don’t suffer in silence Listen to your body and your baby - if you don’t feel right tell someone. Post Natal Depression or post natal physical complications can have a serious effect on you and how you feel about your baby. Your health visitor or midwife or GP are there to help you in the fi rst instance.

Tip 4: Talk to other mumsSupport from others who are the same position as you will help you realise that you are not alone. Go online if you can’t get out and you will fi nd a whole world of welcoming parents to share with.

Tip 5: Get a routineEstablish a routine that works for you - some may fi nd a baby led routine suits, some parents swear by Gina Ford style of routines. Listen to others but do what suits you and your lifestyle.

Tip 6: Treat yourselfDo something for you - either as a couple or as an individual. If you can take a couple of hours off from being Mum or Dad try to relax in a warm bath or allow your partner to do something they enjoy.

Tip 7: Go-online...Don’t waste time slogging round supermarkets - go online and get the essentials and big items delivered.

Tip 8: How can Dad help? After 9 months of not being able to do the hard work now is your time to shine. If you are lucky enough to have paternity leave take the time to support your partner by giving her a bit of space. Take your new baby out for walks or go for a drive with them- a chance to have some time to yourself in the car and believe us - a drive has a calming infl uence on pretty much all babies.

Tip 9: Visiting time...Manage your visitors. The fi rst days after your baby arrives it will seem that every member of your extended family, your neighbours and your work colleagues will want to visit - even if you are asleep or are breastfeeding. Be fi rm and ask visitors to come at a time that suits you and your family.

Tip 10: You don’t have to be supermummy...Don’t try to be supermummy (or daddy). You don’t have to prove that you can do everything and be the “perfect” parent. If you don’t get out of your PJ’s one day - who cares? Do what you need to and we promise it will get easier.

No-one tells you how hard becoming a parent for the fi rst time can be so for those of you who are just about to become parents or have a new baby here is The Handprints Magazine New Parent Survival Guide with some hints and tips for making the fi rst few weeks of your baby’s life a lot easier.

Parties are a piece of cake with Debutots Early Years DramaWhat makes a better combination than children, christmas and parties? Just add a Debutots Adventure and you’ll have the perfect entertainment for little ones all year round.

At Debutots Early Years Drama we know how to make a party a memorable experience for every child. We bring lovelable characters and stories to life with games, fun, laughter and imagination and at Christmas we love to introduce our fabulous stories from all corners of the world - you can meet Karl the Kangaroo who is visiting from Down under and has never experienced a chilly Winter or Mayor Mistletoe on the search for the best christmas tree in town.

We can entertain at parties for birthdays, seasonal events, end of term celebrations for children from 2 to 6 years of age and with our loveable characters like Fairy Fuddle, Pirate Goldstealer or Potty Pearl we keep boys and girls entertained so all parents need to think about is the food. We have great reviews on Netmums so you are able to see what other parents think before you book.

Debutots popular weekly and Saturday term time classes are a unique blend of interactive storytelling and dramatic play designed to fi re budding imaginations, build children’s self-confi dence and help develop their communication skills. One week we may be swinging through the jungle as monkeys , the next we could be blasting off into space to search for cheese as Micestraunauts! Anything is possible with Debutots!

Sessions available across North Bristol and South Gloucestershire for 6 month - 7 year olds throughout the week.

If you would like to book a children’s party contact Lucyon 01454 612063, email [email protected] or Visit

www.debutots.co.uk for a full timetable of classes.

All men love Christmas, as a boy (toys), as a young man (beer) and as a young couple (expensive presents) but then as you become a dad, Christmas changes.Apart from wearing the duty Christmas Jumper, it’s all about the kids (however it does get annoying when your 4 year old daughter claims she wants everything on the adverts from September onwards!). You forget about expensive presents for your partner and spend everything on the kids. However there is an ulterior motive! As mentioned above we love Christmas, we don’t get toys ourselves (lets admit it we are big kids!), but we get them by association. After all who is going to build Charlotte’s Princess Castle (securing it with a bit more glue – just to make sure) and who is going to set up and play with Tom’s Scalextric’s set. “But he’s only 2!” says mum, “and your point is...? He’ll grow into it!” you shout as Lewis Hamilton beats Heikki Kovalainen for the 10th time this morning!! (women will never understand the complexities of handling a hairpin bend at speed!), or you are taking on the hoards of the Covenant in Halo on the “families” new Xbox!

But the most special bit is when your children are still young, is helping them lay out Santa’s treat by the fi replace just before they go to bed. The mince pies and glass of milk, not forgetting the carrots for the reindeers. Then in the morning seeing their faces as they see the empty plate, apart from a few crumbs. An empty glass and a few frosted footprints leading the fi replace…! Magical. They then see the presents and then all hell is let loose…its usually a blur of hands and wrapping paper!

However, my top tip for Christmas is… Don’t forget a good supply of batteries! (usually AA’s) Come Boxing day everything will be run fl at and all the shops will be closed…As a fi nal note…Merry Christmas and enjoy the time with your family…

Frosty the Snowman Cupcake He is so cute and tastes delicious. Jo from Hey Cupcakes! Designed this easy to make and fun to eat cupcake just for

Handprints Magazine!

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4.

2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light, fl uffy and pale.

3. Gradually mix in the beaten egg alternating with the fl our to stop the mix from curdling. Finally, stir in the vanilla extract and milk.

4. Place 12 paper cupcake cases into a muffi n tin and divide the mixture between them.

5. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.

To decorate cover the top of the cakes with a good layer of vanilla buttercream or ready-made frosting which is available in the home baking aisle in the supermarket. It doesn’t have to be neat!

For the snowman’s eyes cut small bits of black jelly beans and rolled each piece into little balls. For his nose cut the end of an orange jelly bean and for his mouth I used choco chips from the home baking aisle in Asda. His hat is half of a giant chocolate button. Attach all of these parts with a small dab of buttercream or frosting. Wrap a strawberry sweet straw around the marshmallow for the scarf and fi nish off with a silver ball for his button.

IngredientsMakes 12 cupcakes

150g butter, softened 150g sugar

3 eggs, beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract

150g self-raising fl our, sifted 1 tbsp milk

Meet Handprints Bear... a busy young bear out and about doing the things a teddy bear likes to do

Props Props Props!!! First, Anya invited Toby and I to her Music Bugs Class in Bradley Stoke and it was fantastic fun...There were just so many props!

Noisy horse puppets that tie to your little ones waist so they can 'ride' them round the hall, fi nger puppets, glove puppets, a huge assortment of musical instruments and of course lots of singing all ensured that it was a fun packed, exciting and stimulating class.

Highly recommended by Toby (and me!).

I was invited to the Handprints christmas photoshoot at Blue Skies Photography. We had great fun, with toys and bikes and dressing up I had such a good time.

In September I hit the dance fl oor with Baby Loves Disco. A brilliant night out on a saturday afternoon! In a real nightclub - Oceana in Bristol - we danced, played in the chillout area and enjoyed scrummy food from Baby Bites, Mum and Dad enjoyed it too with a chance to dance to some classic disco tracks.

I also went to a brand new play cafe in Bishopston called Portico Play - its great with lots of toys and things to do for little ones like me while Mum or Dad can enjoy a coffee. There are activities on during the week and its a great place to make new friends. I can’t wait to go back again.

One of my favourite things to do was a visit to Playspace Activity Centre where I met lots of friends for a brilliant birthday party - one of the best I have every been to - I just love soft play more than anything!

Now I am getting ready for Christmas, I will be visiting Santa in the Mall at Cribbs and when Mum and Dad fancy a break I can go play in the Kids Play Creche, brilliant soft play again but I prefer that to shopping anyway! Unless its for my Christmas presents of course.
