Wow! Looks like we could be in for a scorcher this year. Bring out the barbies and lets hope that we can enjoy the sunshine throughout the summer holi-days.

Once again we have been busy at Handprints Maga-zine HQ and we have managed to bag loads of spe-cial offers and discounts for our readers, check out our centre pages for all our offers and a competition to win family tickets to Baby Loves Disco – the newest club-bing trend for kids and adults which launched in Bristol in May. Whilst we talk about busy our Lisa has achieved a phenomenal goal – she successfully trekked along the Great Wall of China to raise almost £4000 for the Have a Heart Charity fund. Much of this money will go directly to local community projects for children and its something that Lisa was passionate and committed

to – even when she was missing Stan and Toby at home with Dad and nursing blistering feet. So from all of us - WELL DONE LISA! You are amazing! You will never look at a cream tea in the same way again.

Enjoy this summer holiday edition, remember please tell advertisers that you read about them in Hand-prints Magazine and if you know a group who would like to receive copies of Handprints Magazine get in touch – our details are here.

Meet Oliver and Alison…

“During a routine 6 month check our Health Visitor men-tioned that she thought Oliver had a misaligned head and referred us to our local GP. Our GP referred us to a pediatrician for further tests and a possible MRI scan,

We were very worried and immediately went home and looked for Plagiocephaly on the internet, we found it is much more common that we thought. It was then that we found out about LOC, they had a very informative website and when we contacted them they gave us good advice and as they are based in Bristol they are local for us.

when Rachel, our consultant, diagnosed positional pla-giocephaly with no uncomfortable scans or intrusive test and offered us a non invasive treatment called Cra-

helmet to Oliver for approx 6 months.

Before our second appointment – less than 2 weeks later - we were very nervous and dreaded the thought of making Oliver wear a helmet but Oliver has adapted to his helmet with no problems. He has to wear it for 23 hours a day and is really not affected by it.

Oliver has been wearing his helmet for 2 months now and we have already seen a difference. We have to attend the clinic every few weeks for the treatment to be monitored and any adjustments made to the helmet.

We also found out that Oliver had a condition called tor-ticollis – a tightening of muscles in one side of the neck – which meant that he couldn’t fully rotate his head, so he would only lie in one position which resulted in the Flat-head syndrome.

The LOC advised us that it is important to treat this con-dition whilst improving the head shape in the helmet and we are doing this with regular neck stretches and Cranial Osteopathy.

We would highly recommend LOC. If any parents have any concerns about their child’s head they

-fer a free initial consultation. It is important to seek advice through your GP and referrals but we would advise any concerned parents to query that advice with an independent specialist like LOC. It’s also important not to leave it too long as the younger a baby is treated, the more effective and quicker the treatment can be”.

If you would like an opinion on your baby’s head shape you can e-mail pictures to: [email protected]

“I have two young children and tried many different blinds in my car and none of them stopped the moaning about the sun coming through the windows. So I took my car to Pentagon to have the windows tinted and I cannot recommend them enough. The service and quality of work was fantastic and most importantly no moans from the kids since! Worth every penny!” Jo, mum of Lucy & Abi

Excessive heat and glare from the sun can be very irritating, especially for young children in cars. Their prolonged discomfort can become very wearing for parents too, particularly on long journeys.

Traditional stick on blinds are ineffective at stopping the suns’ heat and glare, don’t cover the entire window and have an annoying habit of falling off.

For solar protection that really works,

contact Pentagon Auto-Tint. We have been specialists in car window tinting for over eighteen years and are approved by many leading motor manufacturers.

Our window films cut out up to 65% of solar heat, 95% of glare (perfect where DVD screens are used) and eliminate UV light, thereby protecting your children’s skin. What’s more in the event of a side impact, they add protection by holding together the broken shards of window glass.

For a perfect finish and a lifetime guarantee, which includes all installations, contact us for solar protection that really works.

Picnics! That’s what summers are meant for (well, apart from BBQ’s, but that’s another story!). So come the weekend and the sun is out, it seems rude not to go for a picnic. So we sort the sandwiches, make the soft drinks, rummage round the kitchen for the plastic mugs (that haven’t been used since

the car, in goes the food bags, then the blanket, the kid’s hats, spare clothes (just in case), suntan lotion and balls of various sizes. It takes all the planning and preparation of a small scale military expedition just to sit

and a castle (although not a real one), but it seems whenever we go there, it always seems like we’re sat in a wind tunnel. Great for kites, but not so good for picnics, but being stubborn English we put up with it. “It took all this effort to come

say we are soon packing up and heading back to the car and heading off to a less windy venue…… our back garden!

Tantrums

Tantrums are natural for this age group, and any parent who claims their has never had a tantrum is lying. Don’t back down, no matter how bad the tantrum; see through your request. It will be far easier next time – clear and consistent boundaries are crucial for developing good behaviour.

Rewards

You can add a reward for good behav-iour, but don’t bribe: it weakens your po-sition. Never say ‘If you’re good, I’ll buy you some sweets’, because I guarantee that the next time you go shopping the child’s behaviour will be even worse.

Be consistent

The boundaries and rules you put in place must be clear and consistent. It is pointless not allowing Tom to play with his lorry on the table one day and then allowing it another day. Children can have very long memories and will quickly spot inconsistencies or injustice.

Parent, not friend

Don’t worry about being in your child’s ‘bad books’. We are all there some-times – it comes with territory of good parenting. Any parent who avoids enforcing rules or discipling their child because they don’t want to incur their child’s displeasure will have their au-thority and respect severely diminished in the child’s eyes.

Positive rather than negative

Always take a positive view, and as-sume that good behaviour in your child is the norm. Start each day afresh and do not hang on to past grievances. Children quickly move on and forget their bad behaviour. They want your praise for doing what is right, so they won’t dwell on instances when they didn’t get it right, and neither should you
