HANDOUT #C 4: The Prisoner Problem*

Preface: There are no tricks to this puzzle. All the information you need to solve it is given below. It’s a very, very logical answer.

The Problem: There are four prisoners in a room each one has either a black or a red hat on. There are two hats of each color (2 black and 2 red hats). The prisoners are all facing the wall and can only see the prisoner(s) hats in front of them.

0 0 0 | 0 (a) (b) (c) (wall) (d)

That is, “a” can see “b” and “c” ; “c” and “d” are both blind (for our purposes) since neither one can see through the wall. I stress, there are no tricks, no mirrors, no holes in the wall. The four prisoners cannot see their own hats. Nor can they move or say anything other than, “I’m wearing a _____ hat.” If they do anything else they will be shot immediately! The Question: Which prisoner can tell which color hat he is wearing and why?

HANDOUT #C 7: How to Spot Outcome-Based Education*

1960: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production

is four-fifths the price. What is his profit?

1970 (traditional math): A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His

cost of production is four-fifths the price, or $80. What is his profit?

1970 (new math): A logger exchanges set L of lumber for set M of money.

The cardinality of set M is 100 and each element is worth $1.00.

Make 100 dots representing the elements of set M. The set C of costs

contains 20 fewer points than set M. Represent set C as a subset of set

M and answer the following question: What is the cardinality of the

set P of profits?

1980: A logger sells a truckload of wood for $100. His cost of production is

$80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: underline the number 20.

1990 (O.B.E.): By cutting down beautiful forest trees, a logger makes $20.

What do you think of his way of making a living? Topic for class

discussion: how did the forest birds and squirrels feel?

This test will gauge your mental flexibility. In the years the test has been in existence, many solve more

than half of the equations on the first try. Others reported getting the answers long after the test has been

put aside, particularly in unexpected moments when their minds were relaxed. Several reported solving all

the problem in a week. Use this as your goal. Each equation contains the initial of words that will make it

correct. Find the missing words. The first one is done for you.

HANDOUT #C 16: Short Quiz*

The following short quiz consists of 4 questions and will tell you whether you are qualified to be a “professional.” The questions are not that difficult. 1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator? answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe, and close the door.

This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator? answer: Did you say, “Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant, and

close the refrigerator?” (Wrong) Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions.

3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals

attend except one. Which animal does not attend?

answer: The elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory. OK, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.

4. There is a river you must cross but it is inhabited by crocodiles.

How do you manage it? answer: You swim across. All the crocodiles are attending the Animal

Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes. According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all questions wrong. But many preschoolers got several correct answers. Anderson Consulting says this conclusively disproves the theory that most professionals have the brains of a four-year-old.

02. Say “silk” five times. Now spell “silk”. What do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said “milk” please do not attempt the next

question. Your brain is obviously overstressed and may even overheat. It may

04. Twenty years ago, a plane is flying at 20,000 feet over Germany. If you will

recall, Germany at the time was politically divided into West Germany and East

Germany. Anyway, during the flight, TWO of the engines fail. The pilot,

realizing that the last remaining engine is also failing, decides on a crash landing

procedure. Unfortunately the engine fails before he has time and the plane

crashes smack in the middle of “no man’s land” between East Germany and West

Germany. Where would you bury the survivors – East Germany or West

Germany or in “no man’s land?”

Answer: You don’t, of course, bury survivors. If you said ANYTHING else, you

are a real dunce and you must NEVER try to rescue anyone from a plane crash.

Your efforts would not be appreciated….If you said, “Don’t bury the survivor”

then proceed to the next question.

05. If the hour hand on a clock moves 1/60th

degree”, you are to be congratulated on getting this far, but you are obviously out

of your league.
