HANDED BY products are storytellers. Their stories express

the love for handicraft, authenticity and corporate social

responsibility, while revealing a passion for design at the

same time.

The products are designed in The Netherlands, upon which

the designs will be discussed with our manufacturers in

Vietnam, China and Indonesia; the countries our baskets

and bags are produced. In these countries, they have

perfected the art of weaving and handicraft like no one

else, which explains the fact that our designers get their

inspiration from these cultures and traditions.

Woven baskets and bags are part of the Asian traditional

culture and are used for, for instance, the work in the fields,

crops storage, transportation of goods on people’s backs

or by bike, but also to store food in the house or as cradles

for babies. Wood species such as bamboo, seagrass, rattan,

palm and banana leaf grow abundantly here and are often

used as the basic material.

HANDED BY converts these traditions, colours and shapes

to the Western daily life. Practical, happy, decorative and at

the same time trendy and colourful hand-woven products

that can be used in and around the home.

HANDED BY products are all hand-woven. Respect for the Asian traditions and habits is high up in our agenda. We do not cooperate with heartless manufacturing facilities but directly with the artisans; mostly women working from their homes. After the work on the fields is finished or when the children are in school, they generate extra income by weaving HANDED BY bags and baskets. At home, with the man of the house, or together with the neighbour on the porch, or with a group of weavers somewhere in the village.

One of our production sites is located in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. From a central point in one of the villages far away from the big city, the artisans are provided with their material. Most artisans make a living on the rice fields or around the small farms by growing fruit and with their cows and poultry. They live together with their children, parents and grandparents in one house. After all the work is done, the mothers and grandmothers start weaving the baskets. As soon as the baskets are finished, they are returned to the village, upon which they are checked, cleaned and provided with the finishing touch on a central location. Then, they are transported to the central storage room in the city where they are packaged and shipped to The Netherlands.

We visit the villages on a regular basis and take our time to talk to the artisans and to understand the way they live their lives in order to align our production to it. Quality matters to them and to us; the end result shows that the artisans are proud of their work.

In Central China they make a living out of growing corn. The corn cob granules are dried on the pavement, the harvest is reaped; time to go to the central location in the village to weave and chat with the ladies living in the area.
