The Pawleys Is land Hammocks story goes back to Carolina L ow Country more than 130 years ago. Joshua John Ward, a r iver boat captain, s imply wanted a good night ’s s leep during sultry summers. He set out with some rope and wood, a l itt le gumption and grit and soon fashioned what would become the basis for our company—the rope hammock—a hand woven bed, two wooden spreader bars , a clew knot with a r ing for hanging the hammock. Pretty simple when you think about it .

Our collections, which have grown with simpler t imes in mind, now include a variety of fabric hammocks and decorative pil lows. And because Carolina L ow Country is about s itt ing-a-spell , dropping in on neighbors and sharing a

meal with friends and family, we introduced HDPE better-than-wood furniture several years back.

Original Pawleys Is land Furniture, steeped in L ow Country tradition is generous in proportion, long on durabil ity and rich in design. From casual seating that lends itself to hours of conversations with a glass or two of sweet iced tea to outdoor dining sets around which the best of friendships are cemented with a meal and a toast , our craftsmen and designers keep these s imple experiences in mind.

THE PAWLEYS ISLAND FURNITURE DIFFERENCE

LUMBERThough handsomely resembling painted wood, the lumber in our DURAWOOD™ furniture has none of wood’s inherent vulnerabilities to outdoor wear and tear. Durawood™ is high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, made from recycled plastic milk jugs. Heavier and more rigid than wood, Durawood has increased stability for outdoor use and withstands the extreme elements in a coastal climate. This nonabsorbent synthetic lumber makes our outdoor furniture virtually maintenance-free, plus, it will never rot, split, or crack.

JOINTSOur Durawood™ furniture markedly improves upon traditional lumber-connection techniques to achieve an unprecedented level of overall stability. Our patent-pending interlocking K JOINT connection expands on the strengths of standard rabbet and dado joints and is used for joints requiring the most stability. Our DOWEL JOINT precision peg-and-groove connection limits play at crucial connection points. And lastly, MORTISE AND TENON JOINTS, one of the strongest and simplest woodworking joining techniques, is used in key 90-degree board-into-board joints.

HARDWAREHigh-quality hardware can be all the difference between attractive and unsightly outdoor furniture. Our Durawood™ furniture includes handsome marine-grade 316 stainless steel hardware, designed to resist rust, corrosion and staining, and to withstand extremes of harsh coastal environments and high temperatures.

ROPEFor our DuraWood™ Coastal Collection that includes seats and backs of hand-woven rope, we use only the best outdoor rope available—synthetic DuraCord®. Our 3-ply DuraCord®, which we precision-twist ourselves to exceed even U.S. military specifications for strength, is weather-tough and exceptionally colorfast, not to mention as soft as cotton.
