MESSAGE TO MEMBERS
Welcome back to a new, exciting BNC Season! Our board members and event chairs have been working all summer to put together another terrific year for all of us to participate in and enjoy.
One of the first events of the year is our annual fall matinee Theatre Party – the iconic West Side Story at the Asolo Repertory Theatre, preceded by lunch and a pre-performance talk. (See p. 5) Other events are still being planned, but we’ve included “Save the Date” reminders. At Showcase and through email notices, you’ll receive more information about everything that’s going on in the Chapter. Please take a moment to read these email notices when you get them.
As you look through this Handbook, you’ll see that there are 19 Study Groups this season. Many are favorites from prior seasons that you’ve attended and loved – Modern Novels, Jewish Films, Reel Discussion, Modern Plays and Jewish Short Stories. Also, Harriet Hendel, Jordan Shifrin and Annette Wolf (The Chocolate Lady) are back with new presentations. Some groups are totally new, including interesting tours to area attractions, luncheons and dinners. Most take place during the day, but a few will be held at night, which worked well last season. We’re all very excited about two in particular: Highlights of the Supreme Court and a one-session presentation about Creativity by RCAD’s Larry Thompson.
If you can’t attend Showcase on November 13th, don’t despair! You
can sign up for study groups by first obtaining a study group number from Elaine Nutlay, and then contacting the registrar directly with your study group number. (See p. 7)
You probably are aware that Chapter management is different this year. In lieu of a president, we have a Steering Committee consisting of the Vice Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurer, as well as several former Chapter presidents. We meet monthly, on the first Friday of the month (except. January 8, 2016) at the Federation Building at 9:30AM. Board meetings are open to all members, so if you feel like joining us, please do!
Sincerely,
Helen Spindler, Handbook Editor

There are now 2500 juveniles locked up in the United States who are
serving life without parole. No other country in the world incarcerates
children for the rest of their lives. In this class, we will watch some
moving documentary films about prisoners who now have been behind bars
since their teens. We will explore current Supreme Court rulings that
could change the lives of these young people forever. Included will be
thought provoking articles and books about this emotional issue. Our
children are our hope for the future. Why are we not trying to
rehabilitate these teens? In the words of Sister Helen Prejean: “Are we
to be judged only on the worst thing we have ever done”? Harriet is
passionate about this and invites you to join her in discussing and thinking
about this subject.
Harriet Hendel is very involved in volunteer work in Sarasota. She has
been a mentor for 6 years with Take Stock In Children and volunteers
with "Project 180,” a nonprofit group which works with men just being
released from prison. She teaches for Lifelong Learning at USF. Harriet
visits 7 men and women who are in prison and corresponds with 16 inmates
all over the U.S. She is a member of the Board of Directors of The
Innocence Project of Florida, an organization based in Tallahassee.

Jan 6 Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Luisitania by Erik
Larsen (Facilitator: Jill Simons). Few tales in history are more haunting,
more tangled with investigatory mazes, or more fraught with toxic secrets
than that of the final voyage of the Lusitania, one of the colossal tragedies
of maritime history. It’s the other Titanic, the story of a mighty ship sunk
not by the grandeur of nature but by the grimness of man. On May 7, 1915,
the four-funneled, 787-foot Cunard superliner, on a run from New York to
Liverpool, encountered a German submarine, a U-20, about 11 miles off the
coast of Ireland.
Feb 3 Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali (Facilitator: Bill Batten). One of
today’s most admired and controversial political figures, Ayaan Hirsi Ali
burst into international headlines following the murder of Theo van Gogh by
an Islamist who threatened that she would be next. Infidel shows the
coming of age of this distinguished political superstar and champion of free
speech as well as the development of her beliefs, iron will, and
extraordinary determination to fight injustice. Raised in a strict Muslim
family, she survived civil war, female mutilation, brutal beatings, a
childhood as a
devout believer during the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, and life in four
troubled, unstable countries ruled largely by despots. Expelled from family
and clan, she refuses to be silenced.
