DIGITAL IMAGING

With respect to digital imaging the Club follows the guidelines set by the

East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies, 1999 which state that:

“Photography may be defined as imagery produced via the action of light on

a sensor, (be it light sensitive film etc. or a digital sensor). For EAF competition / exhibition purposes the original image or images must have

been initiated and produced by the submitting author. If manipulation is

undertaken, this should also be the work of the submitting author. It

matters not whether the final image is printed on light sensitive materials or

via a printer connected to a computer or otherwise. The copyright of all

elements of the picture must be at the disposal of the submitting author”.

Providing the above conditions are met, the Committee’s views remain

unchanged in that it is felt it should not be a matter of concern if an image is produced by digital means.

Competition Rules

Only Honorary Members and paid up Members of the Club may enter the Club’s competitions.

A maximum of two prints and two PDIs may be entered per seasons points competition (open and set). This does not include the Points of View

competition (maximum 6 images), or the NALGO and Architects competitions (maximum 3 images). There may be instances, due to the high number of

submissions where it may be necessary to use an image priority. See Competition Entry Process Section.

Images may be in colour or monochrome except where specified in a particular

competition. For example, this year, the NALGO Photojournalism Competition specifies monochrome images only.

THE SAME IMAGE CAN ONLY BE USED TWICE IN CLUB COMPETITIONS. For

example, you can enter the same image as a print and as a digital image (or 2 prints or 2 digital images), but then it cannot be used in the club competitions

again. Entering an image in colour and then again in monochrome also counts

as two “uses” unless it is significantly different. An image is considered the same, even if it has been cropped or has undergone other modifications in post

processing. The Competitions Secretary has the right to withdraw a completion entry if it is believed that the “twice” rule has been exceeded.

The exception is the Annual Exhibition which has its own rules. An image that

has already been submitted twice in Club competitions can be shown again in the Exhibition, if it has not already been selected or shown in a previous Annual

Exhibition.

Images will be scored out of 20 points, and in all competitions 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will be announced. During the seasons point’s competitions, these

places will gain 3, 2 or 1 additional point respectively. In the Points of View, Philip Lepper, NALGO and Architects competitions the 1st place image (or set of

images) will be awarded their respective trophies. The Audio Visual (AV)

competition is judged by member vote, not out of 20 points. The Best Image of the Year is judged by members.

The copyright to the images must belong to the entrant. For manipulated

images the entrant must have copyright of the final image and its components.

Prints may be commercially printed and/or mounted.

All images may be placed on the clubs web site. If you do not wish any of your images to be placed on the website, please see the competitions secretary.

You are encouraged to submit entries to every competition, even if you haven’t

entered previous competitions in the season.

Image Requirements

There are two types of competition – Print and Projected Digital Image (PDI), and the requirements for each are as follows:

Print

Prints must be mounted with a minimum image size of 308 sq cm on a mount size of

50 cm by 40 cm ONLY.

A label must be placed on the back of the mount, as near to the top left hand corner as possible. If the print has been submitted for other competitions, the label should

be placed below the previous label. The following information must be clearly shown;

Note: ALL PRINTS ARE TO BE SUBMITTED ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE COMPETITION

The PDI file format should be: n_AB_X.jpg.

n = image priority (1 or 2 etc.) AB = Authors first and last name, separated by a space

X = image title. The information MUST be the same as on the print

No commas, underscores or other punctuation should be included in the image title or

authors’ names, but hyphens and apostrophes are allowed. Underscores are used to separate the ‘Image priority’ number, the author’s name and the image title.

Images should be in sRGB colour profile, and saved as a JPEG file at the highest quality setting.

PDI

Image size must be no larger than 1400 pixel wide by 1050 pixels high. Images may be thinner (1400 pixels wide but less than 1050 pixels high) for letterbox formatted

images, or narrower (1050 pixels high but less than 1400 pixels high) for portrait formatted images.

File names should be in the same format as for submitting print PDI’s: n_AB_X.jpg

Competition Entry Process

Entries are to be submitted as follows:

Print Entry

All prints must be submitted to the Internal Competitions Secretary by no later than

the Tuesday meeting a week prior to the competition. See Entry Deadlines in “Competition Subjects”. The PDI of the print should preferably be sent by e-mail to

the following address

no later than midnight of the Tuesday meeting prior to the competition or handed in on a memory stick or CD together with the print. The PDI of your print is required at

this time, to ensure smooth synchronisation of prints and their projection on competition evenings. Anyone who does not have access to a computer can still hand

in their print but no image will be projected onto the screen.

All prints must be collected at the end of the evening.

PDI Entry Process

All PDIs must be submitted by e-mail to the following address;

[email protected] by no later than midnight of the Tuesday meeting a week prior to the competition or handed in to the Internal Competition Secretary on a

memory stick or CD. See Entry deadlines in “Competition Subjects”.

A member can submit an entry early. Once your entries have been successfully received, a reply will be sent confirming your entry into the competition.

NALGO Challenge Cup

For the 2012/2013 NALGO Challenge Cup competition entries are to be PRINT and/or PDI’s in monochrome only (maximum of 3 images per member).

The 1st place image will receive a trophy.

As the subject this year is Photojournalism we are relying on the integrity of all

members as we are hoping that your images have had very little work done to them

before they are submitted for this NALGO Challenge Cup competition. Cropping, enhancing brightness, contrast, shadow/highlights and removing dust spots is

allowed.

Architects’ Trophy

The Architects’ Trophy is PDI only and as per set subject. The 1st place image will receive a trophy.

Philip Lepper Competition

The Philip Lepper Competition is a maximum of 3 prints only and as per set subject in

“Competition Subjects”. Each image can have a combination or just one of the

elements of all three spellings.

The 1st place image will receive a trophy.

Seasonal Point’s Scoring Competitions

Each image will be marked out of 20. For the images placed in 1st, 2nd or 3rd position by the judge an additional 3, 2 or 1 points will be awarded. A cumulative points

system operates for both the prints and PDI classes.

The winner, in each separate class, will be the author with the most points at the end of the season.

Other Internal Competitions

The following competitions have their own entry requirements and are NOT included

in the seasonal point’s competition:

‘ARCHITECTS’ ASSOCIATION TROPHY’ [January] Up to 3 images

‘AV COMPETITION’ [January] No restriction in entry number

'BEST IMAGE OF THE YEAR' [April] See below in 2.

The same scoring system will be used [marks out of 20 and an overall winner, 2nd and

3rd places when required]. The exceptions are

1. The AV competition, where members vote for 2 winners to represent the Club at the Felicity Bickley External Competition.

2. Best Image of the Year, which is voted by the members. The competition will be from the best three images of all the season’s competitions from each class.

These will be run through in two stages (first prints and then PDI’s). Every member attending the meeting will be required to advise which they believe

are the top 5 images on a score sheet, which will be handed in and votes

counted. The winner of each class will be announced to the meeting and a final vote, by a show of hands, will be voted upon.

Please note these competitions are individual competitions and the winners are

determined on the evening of the competition. Cups or trophies are awarded.

We hope that when images are marked out of 20, each individual author will have a

better idea of how they are fairing with their photography.

The Felicity Bickley Trophy

(A digital Audio Visual Presentation Competition)

Each member may enter up to two presentations. Sequences to be no more than two

years old. Each sequence must contain a minimum of ten images per presentation

with no upper limit, but the maximum duration shall be five minutes.

All images to be the work of the author, whose name must not appear in any part of

the presentation. Accompanying music or other sound material may include items for

which the member does not hold copyright.

Files should be standalone executable (*.exe), opening in full screen mode and

compatible with a PC computer. (MAC and DVD facilities are NOT available.)

Files may be submitted on CD or DVD or memory stick. The file name shall clearly

indicate the title of the presentation. The disc/stick shall be clearly annotated with

the presentation title and duration, and the author’s name.

Club Rules

1. That this Society be called the BEDFORD CAMERA CLUB.

2. The Club aims to provide its members with assistance, education and enjoyment in photographic matters in a friendly atmosphere by means of lectures, competitions, demonstrations of process, outdoor excursions and other methods.

3. The affairs of the Club shall be controlled by a committee of 12 members, consisting of the President, Immediate Past President, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, and such other officers as are deemed necessary together with elected members. Five to form a quorum. The

committee shall have power to co-opt any other members of the club as occasion arises. No President shall serve in that capacity for more than two years consecutively.

4. The Officers and Committee shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting, which shall be held during the month of May. A Committee Meeting is to be held before the Annual General

Meeting to arrange the business of the Annual General Meeting. The Committee shall have the power to fill any vacancy in its numbers that may occur during the year.

5. No alterations in the Rules of the Club shall be made except at the Annual General Meeting, or a Special General Meeting duly convened for that purpose, and no rule shall be altered without

a two-thirds majority of the members present. Notice of any proposed alteration to be sent in writing to the Hon. Secretary seven days prior to each Annual or Special Meeting.

6. A Special General Meeting may be convened at seven days notice by the Committee or by the Secretary, at the request of ten members in writing. The request must state the reason for

calling the meeting.

7. The Club’s Financial Year shall be from the 1st April to the following 31st March. The Subscription Rate and the entrance fee shall be recommended by the Committee and submitted to the Annual General Meeting for approval. Subscriptions are payable at the first

meeting of the Winter Programme. Any member whose subscription remains unpaid on the 1st November will be regarded as lapsed. (See the Competition Rules concerning eligibility to enter competitions.) Members joining after the 31st December shall pay half the annual subscription

but new members joining after 31st March shall pay a full subscription which will include their membership for the following season.

8. Visitors brought to a meeting by a member or on their own shall pay a visitor fee which has been determined by the Committee. Such fee may be deducted from the annual membership

fee for that season if that person subsequently joins. A person may attend a maximum of three meetings in one season without becoming a member.

9. The Club meetings shall be held as the Committee determines (normally weekly during the Winter Season).

10. Members who plan to resign are requested to inform the Secretary or Membership Secretary in writing.

11. Any balance standing to the credit of the Club at the end of the financial year, shall be applied solely for the benefit of the Club or promotion of its objects, and members of the Club shall not receive payment either directly or indirectly for their services or in any other respect except

legitimate expenses incurred for and on behalf of the Club. In the event of the dissolution of the Club, any assets of the Club shall be devoted to any objects similar to those of the Club.

12. The Club may confer Honorary Life Membership (H.L.M.) upon any member who has given outstanding service to the Club. Election of H.L.M.s shall be made at the A.G.M. after

nomination by the Committee. H.L.M.s have the right to attend Committee Meetings but have no voting power unless they have been elected to the committee.

These rules were formulated and adopted on 4/4/1906, and amended 8/5/1922, 9/11/1926, 4/4/1946, 6/6/1950, 27/5/1952, 6/5/1978 and 4/5/2004.
