This is a beautiful piece with a lot going on musically. The texture can get pretty thick at times, so make sure the melody isn’t overpowered. There are places where the piece is big and loud, but there are still a lot of quiet and flowing passages – be careful to observe these contrasts in your playing. Beginning Play gently. m. 30-31 Tricky page turn dynamically. Make sure the crescendo moves through the page

turn to land on the downbeat of m. 31 page 5 Be careful that the bass clef notes on the & of the beat are precise and do not

speed up or slow down. It may be helpful to think of these as LV in relationship to the stems-down quarter notes in the treble clef (1&2&3&4&) even though they are not stemmed as connected eighth notes.

m. 91-92 Having these notes memorized will help us control the ending beautifully.

Acclamation in G Minor Karen Thompson Such a fun piece with rhythmic drive! VERY IMPORTANT: I will be directing according to the beaming and natural accents in the measures. Many measures will be directed in 3 instead of 4. (Example: m. 7 will be 1&a 2&a 3& and then m. 8 will go back to 4 beats.) This will happen in all of the measures with the eighth notes beamed as 3+3+2 throughout the entire piece with exception to the following: m. 21-24 This will be directed in 4 m. 41-56 Will all be directed in 4 m. 67-70 These will be directed in 4 Joyful, Joyful Cynthia Dobrinski This piece lives up to its name – a very joyful arrangement! Even though much of it is loud, do not allow it to become heavy. Example m. 7 Be ready to jump into this underlying rhythmic pattern in the battery whenever

it shows up throughout the piece. m. 23 passage I love this mallet passage! Let it pop out of the texture, but be careful your

mallets don’t get too heavy.

I was There to Hear Your Borning Cry Cathy Moklebust There is a natural peak shape to this piece. It gradually builds to the Allegretto section (m. 39), then gradually slows again until literally dying away (morendo m. 86). The changing RM chords at the beginning and ending should continue for the full written duration before changing to a new chord. Any pitches that are discontinued should be careful to damp out on the new downbeat. Any pitches that continue (included in both chords) should simply continue to RM without breaking. m. 18 Be careful this section doesn’t try to go too fast. Save some speed for the

Allegretto at m. 39. m. 31-46 Please use mallets for this event so we can have a uniform sound. m. 39-45 Stems down bass clef notes indicate the natural accent pattern based on the beaming of

the eighth notes – 1&2&3&4&.

Rehearsal Notes for Bronze Repertoire Lauran Delancy, Guest Conductor

Vivace con Spirito Jason Krug This piece is a lot of fun! The rhythm patterns found throughout (example: m. 9-10 and m. 41-42) are two measure patterns and the key to this piece. Everyone in the ensemble needs to be very familiar and solid on these patterns. Please pay close attention to the accents throughout. Subdivide, subdivide, subdivide and we will have fun making music together! The Opening is very slow – trust me. m. 7 The tempo will change immediately on the downbeat. It is important to start counting the

subdivisions all the way back here. m. 9 These stems up treble notes need to stay light in order to achieve the speed and control

throughout this section. This rhythmic pattern provides intensity, but they are not the melody and can’t drown out everything else happening below them.

m. 57 Again, the tempo change will happen on the downbeat. m. 85 Notice the note here for m. 85-96. All stems down notes (this includes the whole notes)

are to be played on bells and chimes as much as possible. m. 107 The mart will remain in character as ff and the conclusion of that phrase. The whole

note shakes will be soft in the background as we hold before bringing in the other shakes in m. 108.

Rehearsal Notes for GENESIS Repertoire Lois Reese, Guest Conductor

Please prepare your score with the following: ~All of the bells/chimes/mallets that are part of your assignment at the top of the page. Underline the bells that start in your hands if you have more than two. ~Mark all of your bell changes. (I’ve been ringing for almost 30 years and I still mark all of my changes.) Use a simple symbol like an X or an arrow to show this. Don’t write the history of music. You won’t have time to read it. Rejoice the Lord is King Sandra Eithun Play the melody f beginning at the pick up to ms. 9. Melody people, stand up tall and send your sound out. Be careful that the big stack of notes below doesn’t overshadow the melody. Staccato notes beginning at ms. 27 should be malleted. Malleted notes should stay at an mp level when the melody starts at the pick up to ms. 31. In ms. 47 and 48, only the C7’s shake. Gentleness Ron Mallory All of the staccato notes in the bass should be plucked. Make sure your thumb is on top of the clapper and you are throwing it straight down so the bell won’t roll. Before you ever start playing this piece put on any music in three with a similar tempo and practice swaying and feeling the pulse of three. We live our lives in 4/4 time and we need to break out of that mold. Make sure you are observing all of the ties across the bar lines. It’s what gives this piece its rhythmic interest. All ringers should practice clapping this rhythm as they all play it.

Follow the Star of Bethlehem Linda Lamb All staccato notes should be TD (thumb damp). Some exercises to help the ringers prepare the bell changes that happen in this piece, have each ringer set up three consecutive bells. Number them 1-3 from left to right.

Start with left hand and alternate hands, ring 1, 3, 2 at a half note pace. This is for the GA4 position. The A# can then be displaced in between the G&A to facilitate this bell change smoothly. (If you have someone in this position who can’t handle the bell change, assign the A# to the EF4 ringer.

Then do 2,1,3 starting with right. This is for EF6 position.

Then do 1 &3 together, 3, then 2, this is for FG5. If you have chimes, please use them where indicated. Feel the eighth note pulse throughout the piece. Be ready for eyes up at ms. 64! Granduer Karen Thompson All ringers who have the alternating eighth note LV’s should use one large circular motion for the entire measure. Marts should start close to the table and move straight up and down like you are lifting a suitcase. If you have two marts in a row, make sure to leave the bell in the pad long enough to stop the sound and not have it be a mart lift. When you do have a mart lift, try to get the casting upright as you lift. Please read the footnotes about which notes do not echo. Hope you have some fun preparing this music throughout the year. See you in April! Lois Reese BELLS ARE NEEDED FOR CLASSES! Loaner sets are a critical part of the success of our festival classes. If you have an extra set of bells or know of someone who would loan us bells to be used in the classes in Chesapeake, please contact Debbie Robertson, Event Chair, at (757) 934-1301 or [email protected]. Bells are FULLY insured through the Guild. For loaning bell sets, you can choose either: 1) no compensation, 2) a free registration to a future Area 3 event in the amount of the loaner fee, or 3) a loaner fee paid by Area 3. Please do not bring the extra bell sets unless you have been contacted by Debbie Robertson. Thank you for your help with this!

FESTIVAL CLASSES In order to provide the best experience for you, everyone NEEDS TO PRE-REGISTER for classes even if you will not be taking any classes. Return the form to Debbie Henning by March 1, 2017. Once at the festival, the mini-schedules will have each ringers class choices highlighted on them. If you do not receive your top choices, participants will have a chance on Friday night to see if there are openings in another class. This means that if something goes awry in a classroom with a bell and it can be proven that “we did it,” the policy will cover the loss of ringing equipment. However, this policy does NOT apply to sets of bells in the massed ringing venue. This is where each church, school or individual must carry what is called “marine” insurance on these instruments. This term refers to the fact that you will be traveling with your bells and chimes and they will not be housed in your church, school or home. A “Google” search on “musical instruments insurance” brings up many web site resources. The first two are:
