HAND MADE TILES
They are made of different materials such as, ceramic, clay, ,terracotta What are Handmade Tiles?
etc. and then they are hand painted to create various patterns and designs. They are used in places which require a more comfortable and visually enhancing environment, such as drawing rooms, kitchens etc.
An example of making a handmade tile:
• Each handmade relief tile starts with an original carving done in porcelain .
• When the carving is complete, a plaster mold is taken from it.The original carving rarely survives this process.
• Earthenware clay is then hand pressed and pounded into the mold
• The tiles are removed from the moldand dried slowly to prevent warping
• When dry, most tiles are hand painted with under glazes and fired in a kiln at 2000 degrees .
• The hand painted tile is now hard and the color permanently bonded to the clay
• A wash of under glaze is applied over the whole tile
• The under glaze is then wiped off leaving color in the recesses of the carving and the previously hand painted and natural clay color on the raised parts
• A clear glaze is applied over the relief carved tile and it's fired again. The tile now has a glass like finish. Some of the tiles have a translucent or metallic art glaze, with no under glaze
• Ceramic tiles with metallic or mother of pearl luster have it applied now over the glaze and are fired a third time at a much lower temperature
• The field or plain tiles are made by rolling out slabs of clay to the right thickness and hand cutting them to the appropriate size and shape
• Plain ceramic tiles then go through much the same decorating and firing process as the relief carved tiles
Installation of Handmade Tile
•Surface Preparation for Handmade Tile: The work surface must be structurally sound, dry, and free from oil, grease, dust, loose or peeling paint, concrete sealers or curing compounds. Clean all surfaces with a dry towel. Sand painted surfaces. All wood should be sealed with a polyurethane. Begin when fully dry.
• Mortar and Adhesives for Handmade Tiles
A concrete based mortar adhesive is used.
Trowels are used to spread and "comb" adhesives onto the underlayment. Two sides of the trowel are notched with either "V" or "square-shaped" notches.
• Grout for Handmade Tiles Grout is the filler between the tile
joints. It is a concrete material but not an adhesive.
• Types of Handmade Tiles:
• Ceramic handmade tile:
Ceramic handmade tiles are available in different sizes ranging from 2” X 2” square to 10” X10” and various sizes in rectangular tiles, according to the design.
• Ceramic handmade Tiles are available in two varieties: Plain Tile and Designer Tile.
• Clay Tile: They are made up of clay and are hand
painted after molding. The mold is obtained from a pattern done in porcelain.
• Another special type of Clay Tile is the Ultra Tile. It is made up of clay ,sand and mud. It can be used in both flooring and cladding.
• Terracotta Tiles
Made with English clay they have a richness & depth of color not found in cheaper Italian, Spanish or Mexican tiles which tend to be yellowy pink. The effect of the flames in a reduction gas kiln is to give darker and lighter tiles just as they would have hundreds of years ago with wood and coal fired kilns.
