Years ago, the rock and roll group Three Dog Night had a hit named "Oneis the loneliest number." Although annual reports celebrate hundreds ofnumbers, Hand in Hand recognizes that sometimes a simple one canchange the world.

Last year, one lady journeyed far from her home in Belize to touch thelives of hundreds at our Legacy Breakfast. Indira Bartley's one pres-entation helped raise enough support to continue to build homes, provide scholarships, build wheelchair ramps and support familiesand communities locally, in Appalachia and in Central America.

Early last spring, one volunteer worked with us to introduce a newtype of immersion trip enhancing Hand in Hand's educational efforts. One local fundraiser, one immersion trip and dozens of children andhundreds of family members had their lives changed forever.

Hand in Hand has had one core mission since its inception and it is theone principle that guides us into the future – sharing. Built on a beliefthat we are called to share, Hand in Hand celebrates that we can changethe world, one volunteer, one family and one community at a time.

If you're reading this letter, you may be the one who sees that this prom-ise continues. You are the one whose donations of time, talent and treas-ure have built homes, provided scholarships for children and shared skillsfor a successful life for families. You are the one who has provided a bet-ter life and true hope for the future.

2013 was a great year for Hand in Hand because one by one, youstepped up and made sure that our promise to those we serve is ful-filled. Thank you for being one of those who have made a difference!

Beyond the ClassroomEDUCATION

Julio had heard his mother tell of growing up in a very poor fam-ily and often going hungry as a child. His father had worked a se-ries of jobs, barely scraping by.

Six years ago, Julio was chosento be part of Hand in Hand’sPathway to Change program, giving him an opportunity foran education that otherwisewould have been impossible. His family rallied around him, encouraged him and made thesacrifices necessary to make themost of this scholarship. Julio,Sr., took advantage of a Hand inHand adult scholarship, com-pleted his training and is nowworking at the women's hospi-

tal in Managua as a nurse in the neonatal unit. Julio's mom,Frances, is studying to become an elementary school teacher. Shegoes to university and will finish her training in November 2015.They now know they will have a better life for their new baby,Gabriela, born last August.

Julio is now 12 years old and has been with us since he was 6. Hebegan first grade at Loyola School, as a Pathway to Change stu-dent, and has been with us ever since. Completing the series ofEnglish classes with a grade of 86%, Julio is shown above holdinghis certificate from the American Nicaraguan School. Julio alsowon a prize in photography, taught by John Fitzgerald, during theJuly 2013 Walden Theatre Camp.

Hand in Hand gave Julio and his family the little jump-start theyneeded to supplement their tenacity and desire to provide a bet-ter life for their family.

Hand in Hand gave them the initial support they needed, ener-gizing them, and making it possible for them to go after their owndreams... they did, and they still are. For us, that is huge!

Visit www.myhandinhand.org to find out how you can help fam-ilies like Julio’s.

Hand in Hand’s Scholarship program for high school and collegehelps over 30 students each year in Belize. The results have beenremarkable.

A powerful example is Angelito. He has been with Hand in Handsince 2003. We provided assistance through our scholarship pro-gram to him and soon after, he started volunteering for our tu-toring program and is still doing so.

Angelito has earned an Associates Degree and is a teacher at St.Luke's Methodist School. While furthering his education, he con-tinues to help other Hand in Hand students. If you would like tosponsor a student, contact Hand in Hand at 502.459.9930.

It all starts with one person. After hearing about her parents im-mersion trip with Hand in hand, Emma Greenwood wanted togive it a try. She quickly discovered that helping others is FUN, es-pecially when you can share the experience with your friends.

As a seventh grader atSt. Patrick School,Emma decided im-mersion trips wouldbe the focus of her 7thand 8th grade stew-ardship program. Withthe encouragement ofthe principal, pastorand deacon, Emmasucceeded in spear-heading a trip to Aux-ier for her classmates. The trip was a hugesuccess for the stu-

dents, staff and homeowners in Auxier. Two trips to Auxier are al-ready scheduled for St. Patrick in 2014, and other middle schoolsare expressing interest in our trips.

Emma moved on to Sacred Heart Academy and she continuedspreading her love of serving others. She organized an immersiontrip for her freshman field hockey team. Word of the trip spreadbeyond the team and 42 girls and parents joined in. They learnedthat serving others is an amazing way for a group to bond. Ofcourse, Emma is already working on plans for a group to returnagain this fall.

Emma has been on six immersion trips to Appalachia and one toBelize where she built a house for a mother and her daughters.Serving others is a part of Emma and she never hesitates to sharethis gift with others. She is a perfect example of the differencethat one person can make. She proves that one person canchange the world by getting involved and inviting others to join.

BUILDING FOR CHANGEBuilding for Change takes onmanymeanings – actually buildinga home, building relationships and building communities throughcultural immersion, education and home repair.

Despite numerous personal and family challenges, Bev-erly Cross has always been one to give back to her com-munity. When we first met Beverly, she was managing theGarrett, Kentucky food pantry.

When severe drainage problems began to destroy herhome, she reluctantly asked for help. Groups of volunteersworked to stop the water running into the house from themountains. Other volunteers rebuilt all of the plumbing inBeverly’s home.

Beverly now faithfully volunteers at our food pantry everymonth. One of her sons follows his mother’s lead andhelps unload trucks at the Auxier Center when needed. The family is grateful for the help and shows true com-munity spirit by unselfishly giving back.

5Have you considered remembering Hand in Hand in your will . . . leaving a lasting legacy?

one Visionone man with a dream, Wayne Fowler, our founder,

inspired others to join him. he knew that theimmersion trip experience could change

the world, one family at a time.

In 2002, Wayne saw an opportunity to give hope to families in Be-lize by building simple homes. When he saw the ravages ofHIV/AIDS affecting the children of Belize, our Outreach Programwas born. As the need for high school and college assistance grew,a Scholarship Assistance Program began. Wayne had a vision toput all these programs under one roof to allow our programs tothrive and grow.

With the help of a handful of very generous supporters and a sig-nificant gift from another organization, Wayne's vision is becom-ing a reality. The land has been filled. The architect is drawing upplans and within the next few months, construction will begin ona brand new Outreach Center. The center will become home to allof our existing programs and allow Wayne's vision of expandedprogram services to continue. Thanks Wayne for the inspiration tomake the dream come true.
