Conclusion
• Hand hygiene practice is considered to be
the most effective strategy for patient
safety. Healthcare workers’ compliance
has been lower than expected. (Gluyas,
2015)
• In October 2013, a 175 bed community
hospital scored 51% on a hand hygiene
review. Strategies were needed to
increase hand hygiene compliance for
patient safety.

Procedures Results
• Staff have created an environment that in
fact protects and supports the patients that
we care for on a daily basis.
• It is imperative to keeping hand hygiene at
top of mind for everyone at all times and
make it fun and hold staff accountable.
These activities have been instrumental in
the success of the campaign.
• Moving forward, the Hand Hygiene
Campaign will continues to investigate
different ways to approach staff motivation
and compliance with hand hygiene
activities..
• An observational design was used to
analyze hand hygiene compliance among
healthcare workers.
• Data collection is gathered every quarter
by the Quality and Infection Prevention
Department.
• Formation of a multidisciplinary team with l
representatives from every hospital
department (Hand Hygiene Champion).
• Quarterly Hand Hygiene Champion meetings
with defined themes.
• Dissemination of weekly Hand Hygiene
Huddle Messages and emails to the
Champions scripting important hand hygiene
information to share with staff. Examples of
engagement strategy include games, puzzles
and word searches.
• Development of videos and posters that
illustrated proper hand hygiene and its impact
on patient safety.
• Established, dedicated information boards
