How ortunate I was to grow up in thelovely village o Hampden! I lived in the

Post Oce residence, which was part othe same building as the Post Oce itsel, with my parents and older brother and twoyounger sisters during the period 1951to 1964 approximately. My ather, BillMcHenry, was a much loved postmaster, providing a helpul, riendly service to theresidents o the village and the

    surrounding area. Hewas so appreciatedby his customersthat he was r e q u e n t l y oered goodt h i n g s i nreturn such as

ruit rom treesin back gardens andwith my siblings, I wasoten sent equippedwith buckets andbaskets to pick plums, apples etc rom gardensin various parts o the village.

Te beach was a ocal point o ourchildhood, with the local childrenswimming in the Kuri Stream and inthe sea rom Labour Weekend throughto Easter, barely noticing the oen cooltemperatures. In those days there wereno school baths and our head teacher atthe time, Mr Briggs, along with his two

teaching sta, lined up the entire schoolmost summer aernoons, and walked usall down to the beach or us to swim in the

Kuri. Tere was a pine plantation on thenorthern side o the spot where the new

skate board park stands, which containedtwo hollows, one which the girls used asa changing area and the other which theboys occupied. o reach their hollow, theboys ran along a ridge past the girls area, with the girls all shrieking loudly everytime a boy raced past! Mr Briggs marked

out a course in the stream

    or us to undertakeo u r s w i m m i n gc e r t i i c a t e s

    and I recal lc o m p l e t i n gmy 220 yardsc e r t i i c a t e

    while many did

their 880 yards. What a wonderuleort our teachersmade or us! Such anactivity could neveroccur in these muchmore regulated times.

    Numerous activities occurred in

Hampden in those pre-television days, many o them with the hall as the ocus.In our early years in Hampden the oldwooden hall was still in use. It was locatedon the site o the later cub den just downrom the school gymnasium. I can recallbeing in at least one school concert thereand I also have vivid memories o using

it as a roller skating venue with the localkids, once it was replaced by the new halland awaiting demolition. In the new hall

we had a table tennis club, a drama club, ballet classes, Plunket Society concerts, arewells or residents, social eveningsand o course regular Monday night lmsto name but a ew o the activities held.Te Monday night lms were shown by aMr and Mrs Livingstone who came romOamaru in their large brown car or MrLivingstone to run the projector and MrsLivingstone to take the money in theticket oce. Tey were eagerly awaitedand enjoyed by many residents. In theinterval we would dash along the road topurchase ice creams rom the shop thenrun by Mr and Mrs Barr who openedespecially or the purpose.

hose years were special years.Playing tennis for the local tennis teamon the tennis courts then located nextto the bowling green, travelling totennis games all over the district on aSaturday afternoon, attending dancesin the local hall on a Saturday night orgoing to dances in other places such asHerbert and Maheno were all delightfulexperiences. Te Sunday School at thePresbyterian Church attracted manychildren who were taught by members

of the wonderful Fraser family; Cubs andScouts, Brownies and Guides thrived, and the school children even went on atrip to Wellington, sailing overnight fromLyttelton on the ferry. How privilegedI was to grow up as the Postmastersdaughter in Hampden in those days!

Lime Sulphate: removes lichen romtree branches. Read label or summer orwinter application.Iro Sulphate: or control o mosson lawns. Both available in gardendepartments or centres.Peat - Fried ad Foe?Peat is an excellent medium whenincorporated into potting mix, especiallyor use in large containers and tubs. Whenwet it will retain moisture well. However,i the ratio o peat to other ingredients istoo high, or i it becomes dry, then it is

very hard to re wet.Indications o these two problems are ithe water runs straight down the sides othe pot and out the bottom, or i the wholeroot ball rises up out o the pot. When thisoccurs the plant is in real danger o dyingo thirst, and conversely i the peat getstoo wet it can become waterlogged andthe plant may also die. When looking or potting mix read theingredients and remember you get whatyou pay or. Peat is heavy and relatively

cheap to produce in potting mix, whencompared with bark nes or compostedmaterial. So i the bag is heavy and cheap, chances are there is a high ratio o peat.A guide to buying good potting mix is ithe rst ingredient listed is peat, then lookor one that has bark nes or compostedmaterial as its rst ingredient and buy

that instead. It will cost more, but withthe price o the plant to be potted, it ischeaper in the long run and will makeyou and your plant happier.

How did it start? Chrissy Scoles rangKen Bridge in August 2008 and asked

whether it was the 200 year anniversaryo Hampden in 2009, because herbrother was restoring a vintage vehiclewhich had been the rst meat van inHampden. Ken said he did not know, but would nd out. He rang MargaretJohnston and Ken Miller and theyound that sections were sold in the

1850s and the rst hotel built, and thatHampden was proclaimed a borough inOctober 1879. Ken saw Alex Familtonat one o the Hampden village marketsand mentioned it to him. Alex said weshould do something to celebrate theevent. So a committe wasormed and many
