AMBASSADOR OF THE QUARTER JANET MCCASKEY Owner, McCaskey & Associates Farmers Insurance Congratulations to Janet McCaskey, who has been named the Chamber’s Ambassador of the Quarter. Janet began volunteering as an Ambassador in March 2009. At the beginning of each month, Janet schedules Chamber events on her calendar first, so that she has priority in her planning. Explaining why she enjoys volunteering with the Chamber, Janet said, “I get to meet so many new people, and hopefully share with them my knowledge and experience as a business owner.” Janet’s enthusiasm in promoting chamber events and activities, as well as her ability to make potential and existing members feel comfortable, make her an excellent Chamber Ambassador. The Ambassador Committee is a diverse group of 25 volunteers who are dedicated to making a difference in the Chamber and the community. Ambassadors are liaisons between the Chamber and new and existing members. Rear Admiral Craig Quigley, U.S. Navy (Ret.), briefs the Chamber’s JFCOM Task Force at an October 26 meeting S ince Secretary of Defense Robert Gates’s August 9 announcement of the potential closure of U.S. Joint Forces Command (JFCOM), the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce has been engaged in the issue. The proposed JFCOM closure is a significant impact to the Hampton Roads community. JFCOM directly employs approximately 5,650 in the Hampton Roads region, and an estimated 5,150 additional indirect and induced jobs are created through activities related to the Command’s presence. These 10,800 jobs generate an estimated $600 million in regional personal income. The Chamber is committed to working with our regional partners, Virginia’s Congressional delegation, local city leaders and regional partners to retain JFCOM and its associated missions. We will fully engage the resources of the Chamber and our affiliate, the Small Business Development Center of Hampton Roads, to assist in transition. On behalf of its membership, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to President Obama on August 23 expressing its disappointment in closure announcement. The Chamber urged the President to reconsider and have a dialogue with state and federal leaders. The President has not responded to the Chamber’s letter. In September, the Chamber formed a special JFCOM Task Force aimed at addressing the issue on a local level. The task force, made up of approximately 25 business volunteers, is concentrating on a three-part strategy of “reject, retain and replace.” John Peterson, Senior Vice President of Development for Terry-Peterson Companies, serves as Task Force Chair and Suffolk City Councilman Robert Barclay serves as a liaison between the council and the task force. The JFCOM Task Force held its first meeting on October 26 in Suffolk. Rear Admiral Craig Quigley, U.S. Navy (Ret.), Executive Director, Hampton Roads Military & Federal Facilities Alliance (HRMFFA), provided the group with insight and an update. In addition, Darryl Gosnel, President & CEO of the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance (HREDA), spoke to the task force about his organization’s efforts to recruit new businesses and industries to the region. Patrick Roberts, Suffolk’s Deputy City Manager, and Kevin Hughes, Suffolk’s Director of Economic Development, provided an update from the city. Sabrina Lee Evans joined the Chamber in September as the new Administrative Coordinator for Municipal Affairs. A native New Yorker for over 30 years, Sabrina relocated to the state of Virginia in 2009 with her husband, Reverend Barrielevia Evans. Sabrina spent 15 years in New York City working for Time Inc., A Time Warner Company, as an IT Customer Service Administrator. Sandy Sekeet, Membership Director, has been awarded a scholarship by the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives to attend next spring’s VACCE Institute program. Congratulations Sandy! In August, Sara Wilson joined LEAD Hampton Roads as Coordinator. A Norfolk native, Sara most recently worked at Pender and Coward law firm as an IT Clerk. In 2006, she graduated from Francis Marion University, in South Carolina, with a degree in Business Administration and a concentration in Marketing. She had a soccer scholarship during her four years at FMU. CHAMBER CORNER Jack Ankerson, Executive Director, Hampton Roads Sports Commission and Vice President of Sports Development, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, was inducted into the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame on October 26. Jack has spent more than 30 years promoting sports in Hampton Roads as an administrator and announcer. Tosha Caldero is the new Membership Coordinator at the Chamber. Tosha was born and raised in Virginia Beach and attended Princess Anne High School. She has travelled the world extensively, but is happy to be back home in Hampton Roads. He left the shipyard in 1984 and joined Furmanite America, Inc. as a staff engineer. In October 1987, he became President of Furmanite America. In 1992, Nelson co-founded a consulting engineering company, GeoEnvironmental Resources, Inc., which specializes in geotechnical, environmental, hazardous material, and mechanical engineering. GeoEnvironmental Resources, Inc. has completed over 5,000 projects for more than 700 clients. Local projects have included the Convergence Center development, the USS Wisconsin berthing, Virginia Beach Convention Center, 31st Street Hilton Hotel, and the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Terminal. Nelson served as the Chamber’s 2010 Chair. Chair-Elect Maurice A. Jones is President of Pilot Media, the largest print, digital and direct marketing organization in Hampton Roads. Pilot Media’s businesses include The Virginian-Pilot, Pilot Direct, Pilot Interactive and Targeted Publications + Media. Maurice has served as President and Publisher of The Virginian-Pilot since 2008. Maurice joined Landmark Media Enterprises, owner of Pilot Media, in 2005, serving as Vice President of the Landmark Publishing Group. In 2006, Jones joined Pilot Media as Vice President and General Manager. Maurice has served the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce as Vice Chair of both the Marketing & Communications Committee and Membership Committee. Treasurer Deborah K. Stearns, CPM, SIOR, is Senior Vice President at Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate. Deborah’s experience includes office property sales and leasing, commercial development, mergers and acquisitions, and operational management. She is focused on brokerage and business development for the company’s brokerage and property management operations. Deborah is active in the community and serves on the Board of several State and regional organizations. Members Dialogue with Local Congressmen H eading into the midterm elections, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and its HRBizPAC hosted a U.S. Congressional Issues Luncheon on October 25 in Norfolk, attracting a crowd of 150 business leaders. As the voice of business, the Chamber strives to offer its members quality programs and access to elected leaders. Speakers included Congressman Randy Forbes (R-04), Congressman Glenn Nye (D-02), Congressman Bobby Scott (D-03), and Congressman Robert Wittman (R-01). Shep Miller, Chair of the Chamber’s HRBizPAC, emceed the discussion, which included top- ics such as taxation, national defense, card check legislation, the port, transportation, the war in Afghanistan, and health care. After each speaker’s remarks, those in the audience had an opportunity to ask questions.     Since Secretary of Defense Robert Gates’s August 9announcement of the potential closure of U.S. JointForces Command (JFCOM), the Hampton Roads Chamberof Commerce has been engaged in the issue. The proposedJFCOM closure is a significant impact to the HamptonRoads community. JFCOM directly employs approximately5,650 in the Hampton Roads region, and an estimated5,150 additional indirect and induced jobs are createdthrough activities related to the Command’s presence.These 10,800 jobs generate an estimated $600 millionin regional personal income. The Chamber is committed toworking with our regional partners, Virginia’s Congressionaldelegation, local city leaders and regional partners to retainJFCOM and its associated missions. We will fully engagethe resources of the Chamber and our affiliate, the SmallBusiness Development Center of Hampton Roads, to assistin transition.

    On behalf of its membership, the Hampton Roads Chamberof Commerce sent a letter to President Obama on August23 expressing its disappointment in closure announcement.The Chamber urged the President to reconsider and havea dialogue with state and federal leaders. The Presidenthas not responded to the Chamber’s letter.

    In September, the Chamber formed a special JFCOMTask Force aimed at addressing the issue on a local level.The task force, made up of approximately 25 businessvolunteers, is concentrating on a three-part strategy of“reject, retain and replace.” John Peterson, Senior VicePresident of Development for Terry-Peterson Companies,serves as Task Force Chair and Suffolk City CouncilmanRobert Barclay serves as a liaison between the counciland the task force.

    The JFCOM Task Force held its first meeting on October26 in Suffolk. Rear Admiral Craig Quigley, U.S. Navy (Ret.),Executive Director, Hampton Roads Military & FederalFacilitiesAlliance (HRMFFA), provided the groupwith insightand an update. In addition, Darryl Gosnel, President & CEOof the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance(HREDA), spoke to the task force about his organization’sefforts to recruit new businesses and industries to theregion. Patrick Roberts, Suffolk’s Deputy CityManager, andKevin Hughes, Suffolk’s Director of Economic Development,provided an update from the city.

    Sabrina Lee Evans joined the Chamber in Septemberas the new Administrative Coordinator for MunicipalAffairs. A native New Yorker for over 30 years, Sabrinarelocated to the state of Virginia in 2009 with her husband,Reverend Barrielevia Evans. Sabrina spent 15 years inNew York City working for Time Inc., A Time WarnerCompany, as an IT Customer Service Administrator.

    Sandy Sekeet, Membership Director, has beenawarded a scholarship by the Virginia Association ofChamber of Commerce Executives to attend nextspring’s VACCE Institute program. CongratulationsSandy!

    In August, Sara Wilson joined LEAD Hampton Roadsas Coordinator.     More than 200 business leaders, elected officials, and otherinvited guests ventured aboard Norfolk Southern’s restoredvintage railcars on October 21 for a special passenger train trippresented by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. Theevent, sponsored by Norfolk Southern Corp., provided the groupwith a preview of passenger rail service on a nearly four-hour154-mile roundtrip from Norfolk to Petersburg. Passenger rail

    service is expected to launch in less than three years taking peopleon Amtrak from Norfolk to Richmond, Washington, D.C. and upthe East Coast.

    Marino Santarelli, Wachovia’s Southside Hampton Roads marketexecutive, said, “Spending a good part of my career in the North, Ihave experienced the incredible advantage of taking the ACELAbetween NYC, Philly, Wilmington, Baltimore, and Union Station inDC. The calm, socializing, and timeliness thatwere experienced onthe road to Petersburgwere just a ‘tease’ of what’s to come. I waitin great anticipation.”

    Virginia’s Transportation Board has set aside $93 million to makethe necessary improvements, including upgrading some sectionsof the track and enhancing the signal system. Currently, NorfolkSouthern operates 15-18 freight trains a day on the lines. Thosewho want to take a passenger train to D.C., currently have totravel to Newport News. The new service would operate out ofa transportation center at Norfolk’s Harbor Park.

    LEAD Hampton Roads presented the 11th annual State of the Region address on October 6 on the Southside in Norfolk and onOctober 12 on the Peninsula in Newport News. More than 800 business and community leaders and elected officialsin total attended the events to hear Dr. James Koch, Board of Visitors Professor of Economics and President Emeritus, Old DominionUniversity, present the program.

    Dr. Koch said that in the next 5-10 years, the region will not see a lot of economic growth. The three main issues facing the areaare defense spending, transportation, and risingwater levels. The State of the Region address covered the recent announcement ofthe Joint Forces Command closure, transportation (light rail in particular), the port, tourism, the housing market, and jobs.

    Ata luncheon held on October 8 in Norfolk, the Hampton RoadsChamber of Commerce recognized Mass CommunicationsSpecialist 1st Class Bleu Moore as the 2010 Military Citizen of theYear. Moore is the Leading Petty Officer in the Public Affairs Office,U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

    The award is named in honor of Samuel T. Northern, a local business-manwho devoted most of his life to strengthening the relationshipbetween the local community and the military. The annual awardrecognizes the military citizen who has made the most significantcontribution in the area of community service.
