LORDE Bringing a touch of mystery, a pinch of hope and a heap of class, Lorde is a genu-ine, gentle phenomenon. Ella Yelich has turned heads, defied preconceptions and made an indelible impression across the globe with Royals, Team and Pure Heroine.
The schoolgirl concocted her own brand of sophisticated, observational and distinctive pop music. When she linked up with pro-ducer and co-writer Joel Little, she found a kindred spirit and a musical catalyst, who was able to help translate her razor sharp lyrics and melodic sensibilities into some-thing truly special.
If there were ever any doubts, they were soon dispelled as Royals and the entire Love Club EP became a viral phenomenon, first in NZ, then all over in 2013. Ironically Royals would also transform her from un-typical observer to unlikely contender, and celebrity, as it took a nine week residency at the top of the Billboard charts, and achieved multi-platinum success in a mul-titude of territories.
The release of the album Pure Heroine added further substance to the extraor-dinary success - scaling the US Top Ten. Yelich had to decline the school ball, in favor of the likes of the Grammys (though she still wore her school shoes) where she was awarded Best Song Of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
If success has changed her, it isnt show-ing. She remains the same straight for-ward, unique, smart, spirited individual, who initially insisted on sharing her songs and thoughts with the world for free. Go-ing from a first show in a tiny Auckland club basement, to a sold out American tour and top slots at the likes of Coachella and Lol-lapalooza. She maintains her integrity and never compromises her authenticity and honesty, no matter the setting.
Lorde has carved out her own space, one where her artistry will be able to grow and develop, as she continues on with her voy-age.ANDREW WHITTON

Summer Soundtrack
Uptown Special, the fourth album by producer-songwriter-musician Mark Ronson, is a tale of several cities, a wide range of collaborators, and a road trip deep into the American South. However the story of Ronsons latest project really starts back when he was New Yorks hot-test DJ. In the late 1990s into the early 2000s the New York club scene was percolating with booming hip-hop and glitzy R&B. In those days before he emerged as a multi-talented musical force Ronson manned the turntables of many great parties.
It was a fun time to be playing music, he says. At clubs like Cheetah you didnt have to play a hip hop record until 1 AM. You could play early 80s classics by Chaka Khan, Boz Scaggs and Michael Jackson and rock the crowd. Id play Steely Dans Black Cow at 11:30 and it world work. Then, at 1 AM youd play Hypnotize by Biggie and the crowd would go wild. I come back to those memories.
This mix of vintage R&B and pop with contemporary hip-hop is what made Ronson a star DJ. I never get tired of hearing records like Earth, Wind & Fires Cant Hide Love next to Rock the Boat by Aaliyah, says Ronson. I want-ed this record to feel like hearing that kind of musical mix on a great New York club night. Uptown Special has all of the flavor of a night with Mark rocking the ones and twos with funk, soul, and psychedelic pop in a style that echoes classic productions by Quincy Jones and Steely Dan, and funneled through its creators sophisticated understand-ing of arrangement and melody.
The first single, Uptown Funk, features Grammy award-winning superstar Bruno Mars on vocals and drums, who sings with passion and plays drums with fire that brings funk back on the radio. Though Ronson is now based out of London, most of Uptown Specialwas recorded in the United States with stops in Los Angeles, Memphis and Mis-sissippi.
The first song composed for Uptown Special was Summer Breaking, a jazz influenced track with harmonies and chord changes that fans of smart pop like Steely Dan will respect. Thats a track I couldnt have written in Eng-land, Ronson says. I had just started working out in Los Angeles with Jeff Bhasker, who is a Berkelee trained jazz pianist who is also equally gifted in gos-
pel and soul. I was a massive fan of his work and eager to write some-thing that would impress him. Bhasker came to fame working closely with Kanye West on his 808 & Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twist-ed Fantasy and the West-Jay Z collaboration Watch the Throne. But it was after hearing Bhaskers song for Alicia Keys, Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart, Ronson knew he had real musical soulmate.
Of his three previous albums Ronson feels like Uptown Special is clos-est in spirit to his 2003 debut, Here Comes the Fuzz, which came directly out his DJ experience. The difference, Mark says is I was reaching for things musically I wasnt quite ready to execute. With all the experience Ive gained over the years I had the maturity and knowl-edge to really pull this together.

LEFT HAND
I feel so excited writing this cocktail recipe because it means summer is near, and maybe with enough wishful thinking we can have a continuous spread of good weather to enjoy these cocktails. For this Memorial Day weekend I am recommending a light-but-strong fruitful and floral drink, The Floral Sangria. This one is simple. There is no added sugar, the ingredients didnt cost me a fortune, and with a smile on my face after three sips, I knew I had found my summer drink.
Ingredients (Makes 1 Large Pitcher)One bottle Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc (I used a bottle of Wolffer
Sauvignon Blanc from a previous Hidden Cellar Society shipment)2 cups St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur* 1 orange, thinly sliced with peel left on
1 apple, sliced8 blueberries8 raspberries
8 strawberries, sliced1 bunch green grapes, sliced1 bunch red grapes, sliced
2 peaches, slicedIce
Combine the ingredients in a bowl or pitcher and refrigerate overnight. Serve in a glass over ice and smile.
*Since its made without preservatives, you shouldnt hold onto the St. Germain elderflower for more than six months. Just all the more reason to make pitchers of The Floral Sangria every weekend!
Have a fun and fabulous Memorial Day! And as always . . . Drink Responsibly!
LEFT HAND, an espresso bar that opened recently in Montauk, was inspired by a shared love of good coffee and the coffee culture itself. Owners Yannis Papagianni and Larry Siedlick are neither trying to reinvent the wheel, nor cater to the masses. LEFT HAND simply wants to serve coffee the way they think it deserves to be served, and how they like to drink it, in the heart of Downtown Montauk.

Sea ScallopsIngredients (serves 4)
1 lb sea scallops (cleaned)4 large parsnips (peeled
& cut)1 c whole milk
1 bay leaf1/4 lb butter
6 lemons (peeled & juiced)1/2 c sugar1 c water
4 small bunches of mchSalt to your liking1 oz canola oil
Method
Begin by melting the sugar into the water over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Cook the lemon peel over me-dium low heat in the resulting simple syrup until they turn soft and translucent.
While this is happening, boil the parsnips in water until they are soft. Heat the milk to a sim-mer and steep the bay leaf in the milk for five minutes. Add the parsnip, milk, and half of the butter to a blender cup. Season to your liking and pure.
Heat the other half of the butter over medium heat, stirring often until the milk solids in the butter begin to turn brown. Take it off the heat and keep in a warm place.
The lemon peels should now be ready. Add the candied lemon peels, three tbsps of the lemon simple syrup used to cook the peels, and 1/4 cup of lemon juice to a blender cup.
Pure until a thick smooth consistency is achieved.
Once all of the elements are ready, heat a frying pan over high heat. Season the scallops and put the oil in the hot pan.
Drop the scallops in the pan and sear on one side for one min-ute, then flip the scallops to the other side and sear for another minute.
Add the warm parsnip pure along with the lemon around the plate. Place scallops on top of the parsnip. Add some mch to garnish with a drizzle of brown butter to finish. Enjoy!

Every summer in the Hamptons there are events that take place and every woman wants to make sure they look fabulous. The Countess Collection has a variety of pieces you can mix and match from pants to tops to dresses and much more! You can shop at evine.com and see what catches your eye! Vibrant colors and trendy patterns will have you looking your best this summer! Also visit www.countessluann.com for her most current happenings.
Craig Conover is the go-to-guy for mens fashion and we got to see a lot of that on this season of Bravos Southern Charm. His Kennedy-esque classic good looks have him in high demand these days and have folks wondering if hes thinking of trading the court room for the runway. Dont bet on it. Conover has enough energy to juggle both a career in law and in modeling. This July hell be taking the bar exam regardless of some of the slack hes gotten this season about his laid back demeanor toward work and his enthusiasm for the Charleston night life. Craig has a bachelors degree in finance and completed his education at the Charleston School of Law, so taking a little break before entering a full time career is something I think he deserves. Most people dont know he gives back to underprivileged
children who have become victims of abuse/neglect that have had to be placed in the system. Hes the complete package and you may get your chance to meet him this summer in the Hamptons! Stay tuned for more on that and follow him on twitter and instagram!
This September the Golden Door International Film Festival will celebrate its fifth year. Founder Bill Sorvino has also been keeping himself busy with a variety of films that are coming out this year. Confidence Game, Steps (produced by Shaquille ONeal) and A Place For Heroes are slated to come out in 2015. Mommys Box is another that was directed by Johnny Greenlaw and was filmed in Suffolk County. Sorvino will be filming Whos Jenna Jameson starting this month followed by Sins in November. He also has two projects in development which are Oddfellas, a TV Dramedy with Joe DOnofrio (Good Fellas) and Bravo Man in which he stars with his cousin Michael Sorvino and is written by Amanda Sorvino who is Michael and Mira Sorvinos sister and Bills other cousin. He is often casted in lead roles and thats no surprise given his family legacy and his training at William Esper Studio. You can keep up to date with him via his website www.billsorvino.com.

Many movies start from books and Leaves of the Tree is no exception. David J. Healey wrote a book which initiated from a web blog. A few short years later the movie is here and made its NYC Premiere at the SOHO International Film Festival earlier in May. The movie has garnered many festival awards including Best Screenplay, Best Dramatic Feature and Best Actor Eric Roberts,
just to name a few. The tagline Theres a line that divides humanity and divinity gives you the insight to what the movie is about. The leaves of an olive tree, divine healing and questioning whether to keep it a secret or not makes for a great dramatic movie with a cast that Donna McKenna, C.S.A. orchestrated together so perfectly, including newcomer Sarah Sebastiana, who lights up the screen with her natural talent. Check out their website for more info and where you can see the movie next at www.leavesofthetreethemovie.com.
Movies like Leaves of the Tree give people hope which is something you can never have enough of. On Long Island the radio station appropriately named Hope Radio does just that through its music and ties to the community projects that pay it forward. Rich Anderson started the station eight years ago with the vision of bringing hope to Long Island because without it people perish. The
station is a conduit to help the lost and the broken and there are many I have personally spoken to who have stated that they tuned in at a time when they were at their lowest and it helped get them back to a state of well being. Music nurtures the soul and so does laughter which is why you should check out the Morning Drive weekdays from 7AM to 11AM. Rich along with his two co-hosts will have you smiling and laughing as they bring you news, weather, sports and interviews with people from a local level to a national level. You can visit www.richandersonmedia.com or www.hoperadiony.com for more info.
If you want more information on anything written in this column please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] and also stay tuned for a new show Im putting together this summer called Fame Meets Faith. If you have a favorite person or celebrity youd like to see interviewed, let me know that too! Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and a Happy Fathers Day to all the dads!
