Though it doesn’t seem like it, July marked the third year anniversary of Marcia and I being with you at Little Chapel. The days and months (for the most part) seem to go by in the “blink of an eye”. We truly have and I am sure will continue to enjoy our time with you. I greatly appreciate the staff and leadership of Little Chapel as we continue to move forward, doing all we can to be the church that God calls us to be. I want to especially thank Karen Scheboth and her more than 8 years of service to Little Chapel, first as the Office Administrator and then as our Director of Christian Education. Karen’s enthusiastic desire to serve God and the church has been a wonderful blessing to all. We will miss Karen and wish her nothing but the best. I hope you will join me on Sunday, August 3rd as we say “thank you” and goodbye to her following the 10:30AM service. Her smiling face will be missed at Little Chapel. I also want to thank Heather Noe and all those who helped make Vacation Bible School such a wonderful week for our children. Though the decorations have come down and the halls of the church are quiet, I am sure the lessons that the young people learned that week will stay with them for a long time to come. Thanks to all who helped make it a wonderful experience. We are going to try something new at Little Chapel beginning on Sunday, August 3rd. We are calling it Devotion and Dinner, though you don’t have to stay for dinner. But beginning August 3rd we are going to gather at access 20 (that is at the end of Fayetteville street) at 6:30 for a short devotion and dinner. You are asked to bring your own “brown bag dinner” and drink and join us as we share fellowship together following the devotion. It will be a nice way to end the weekend. We will do this the first Sunday of every month until we decide it is too cold to continue. I will have a short devotion, we will sing a few songs, pray and then enjoy a meal together. If it rains we will not meet. I hope you will join us for our first “Devotion and Dinner” on Sunday night, August 3rd.

Saying goodbye, and keeping you in my thoughts… The Apostle Paul spoke of “forgetting the past” and “pressing forward!” That is what we must do. It is inter-esting to me how God made us humans to be such special

beings. He gave us the ability to remember! Our mem-ories can be our friend or our enemy. Obviously Paul did a lot of things! He planted church-es, wrote books, preached sermons. Paul had a dreadful past and it could have easily haunted him for the rest of his life, if he allowed it to. Paul was telling us to rise up and make the Kingdom of Heaven our number one goal! Today, I press forward, but in doing so, must say good-bye. Is it easy for me? No. Saying goodbye is always hard to do! I am leaving behind powerful memories and events from the past eight and a half to almost nine years. The Little Chapel has been a place of joy and an extended family. We have shared much! Robert Raines wrote a prayer in his book Going Home that says it best. He prayed,

“As we separate and the ties unbind and the threads of our lives disentangle and we make ready for a new weaving, let us believe in our hearts that nothing we have shared together that is good will be lost, that all we were takes its honored place in our life’s journey, that nothing is cancelled, but some things are settled and concluded, that much we cannot say or com-municate, nonetheless abides and endures, that nothing can separate us from your love, in your love.”

Did you know that goodbye is a shortened form of the phrase, “God be with you?” This in anybody’s book is a blessing. I pray that as we go through this time of say-ing goodbye, we may do so believing that nothing we have shared together that is good will be lost, that all we were takes its honored place in our life’s journey, that nothing is cancelled, but some things are settled and concluded, that much we cannot say or communicate nonetheless abides and endures, and that nothing can separate us all from God’s love, in God’s love.

You will always be in my thoughts and prayers!

The Children’s Church is off to a great start! The room is painted. The children created a rug that now lies on the room’s floor, and the

children created a cross to hang in the front of their Lit-tle Chapel. If you have not had a chance to see the room, please stop by and check out room 113. During church, children ages Kindergarten through fifth grades sit with their parents/guardians until after the children’s sermon. Then, they join an adult for the chil-

dren’s church. During children’s church, the children will sing songs, review the scripture of the day, have a lesson and work on their own bulletins. Join us each Sunday morning for the 10:30AM worship service. Children’s church begins about 10:45AM—just after the children’s message .

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION THANKS YOU!

WOW!! In July, 54 children came to Little Chapel which had been converted into the Workshop of Won-ders. They were here to Build with God. Thanks to many volunteers who were ready to share their love and excitement about God, the children did just that...they built their relationship with God. The VBS directors would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire congregation for your support of our 2014 Vacation Bible School. An especially big THANK YOU goes out to all our Leaders, Faith Builders, Kitchen Crew, church staff and everyone else who dedicated time and talent to make the Workshop of Wonders a success. We would also like to thank all who donated items to our service project that benefited Habitat for Humanity. You have once again proven to be the Little Chapel with a Big

Each year, the Vacation Bible School Program chooses a mission experience for the children. This year, we collected items for Habitat for Humanity. CLOWN TROUPE TAKES TALENT ON MISSION TRIP TO BEACH

When Flaco the clown (A.K.A Ned McMillan) decided to put the

clown club he had sponsored for years at Florence Elementary

School into Jamestown Presbyterian Church, it seemed natural

for the group to change its summer performance venue. The

group, which included 20 clownettes and seven adults, recently

returned from a mission trip to Wrightsville Beach and Wilming-

ton.

“The decision on the trip was the result of the Lord leading us

there,” McMillan said. Our annual summer trip to Coon Dog

Day in Saluda no longer seemed suitable. It was too short a trip

and was hard to connect with an audience at a street festival.”

Friends suggested the group go to Wrightsville Beach and Wil-

mington and do multiple shows over a longer period of time. An

Internet search for churches in that area that could house groups

led McMillan to Little Chapel on the

Boardwalk Presbyterian.

“Not only did the church share our

gested several places where we

could perform.”

observing how easily and effec-

tively our clownettes connected

with the four very different audi-

ences for whom we performed,”

McMillan said. “All of them re-

sponded with excitement, lots of

laughs and pure joy.”

The clown troupe also enjoyed an

evening worship service on the beach led by Pat Rabun, LCBP

senior pastor, and Scheboth. Each evening, during a special

Clownette Circle, clownettes and adults shared how they had

seen the Lord at work during the day.

“The theme of our show this past year was ‘Help Me Find It,’ a

song by the Sidewalk Prophets,” McMillan said. “The ‘It’ is

God’s will, and we believe that we found it in many ways at

Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington.

“John Butt of Wesleyan Transportation Services was out faithful

driver, but the Lord was definitely our trip director. His guidance

was so obvious throughout the trip.”

Orcutt, Taylor Thompson, Abbie Cothren, Daylyn Love, Caitlyn

Your Mission Committee is pleased to announce a fall Mis-sion Trip to BEAUTIFUL Avery County, NC. LCOB Mis-sionaries will depart Wrightsville Beach on Monday, Octo-ber 20th for the six hour drive to the mountains near New-land, NC. We will volunteer with Avery County Habitat for Humanity building a home on Tuesday and Thursday and expect to be installing siding. On Wednesday, we will visit The Crossnore School and The Grandfather Home for Children and hopefully have a reunion with our new friends from The Crossnore Presbyterian Church. During our stay, we will reside at the HFH Gilmer Community Center in Elk Park, NC. The center has 20 bunks...10 male and 10 female with separate male/female bathrooms, a commercial kitch-en, living area and even laundry facilities...LETS FILL EVE-RY BED! We will return home on Friday, October 24th, hopefully arriving at church before dark. Please prayerfully consider joining this mission team! 2ND LOAF 2nd Loaf continues every Saturday morning from 8:30AM-11:30AM through August 30. If you would like to help provide food, you may bring any unopened, perishable or non-perishable items on Saturday mornings or drop off un-opened, non-perishable items anytime the church is open. A blue bucket, labeled “2nd Loaf”, is on the Tileston bench for your convenience. Also, we joyfully accept cash dona-tions that we use to buy specific items requested by the di-rector of the soup kitchen. THANK YOU for supporting this vital ministry and helping to feed our hungry neighbors in Wilmington. The Pathfinders, bible study group volunteered to take the month of June, both for collection of food and drivers. Thank you to the Pathfinders bible study group. The choir has taken the month of July, both collection of

food and drivers. Thank you to Mila Hill, Janice Willets, Jane Hughes, Dan Hammond, Helen Swartz, Mary Coble, Cos Cosby, Joyce Bradley, Sheri and Jim Alexander, Pat Vass, Kathy Blizzard, and Susan Long (coordinator). Although the month of August was available for the rest of the church to volunteer, all of the Saturdays have been tak-en. We are still in need of drivers for Monday mornings for Monday morning delivery to Good Shepherd. The sign-up sheet is in the narthex. This is a great way to help a wonder-ful ministry.

We recently received this urgent request from the Good Shepherd Center: “When it’s 90 degrees outside, it’s hard to think about Christmas. In December Good Shepherd is blessed with lots of friends sharing their holiday spirit with us. Come July and August, however, our needs are as great as ever. We hope you will find the spirit of Christmas in your heart and help our guests in need.” We invite you to celebrate Christmas in August by bringing the following gifts from Good Shepherd’s “wish list” on Sundays, August 10 or August 17:

Cans of fruit or baked beans (large cans, if possible, but any size is just fine)

Pull-ups (sizes 3 and 4) for their toddler guests

Gift cards (Walmart/Any local supermarket will help just as much)

Every day Good Shepherd feeds as many as 100 hungry men, women and children at breakfast, another 150 at lunch, and another 70 at dinner. On a yearly basis Good Shepherd provides more than 85,000 hot meals to the hun-gry each year.

May we do our part to help feed our hungry neighbors by celebrating Christmas in August.

It takes each of us to say yes to God's command that we take care of each other. News Not Gossip! I am sure you are wondering about this heading… As I thought about my newsletter to you this month I could not help but think about Pat's sermon

yesterday on GOSSIP and hope that is not a problem.

It was a really good thought provoking sermon that should make one stop and think. This brought back a memory of a lady who lived in our town who was known as "The town gossip" and everyone avoided her like "a plague". It is my belief she did it for at-tention but definitely hurt people. The good news is LCOB is thriving with people who " do unto others" and spread love. If there are those who are not following the "Golden Rule" then they are the losers. Be sure and think of only good thoughts to share about others and not be the one who will become the dreaded "plague". What a great Bible School this year. The Children loved it which was very apparent in the Sunday Review. They per-formed with enthusiasm and gusto. Thank you to all those LCOB folks who gave their teaching talents, their time, their outstanding energy and their Love of the Lord to participate. It was a real tribute to the ongoing work at Little Chapel. The Handbook for Presbyterian women will be completed soon. It will be different this year. Hopefully this handbook will be a guide for All the women at LCOB and not just for a Circle Guide. Bible Studies beginning in October among the Circles will be on Paul taken from The Shepherd's Notes. All four cir-cles will be participating in this study and promises to be one we will all enjoy. If you have never been a part of a Beth Moore Bible Study you are missing a real opportunity in your life to learn. Sept.4, the Beth Moore Study of David will begin at 9AM every Thursday morning upstairs at LCOB. Jean Shield and Jannet Kramer will be our leaders. The fellowship is bonding, the experience of the study is mind expanding, the study is open to women in other churches so invite your neighbor and put this study on your September Bucket List and join the journey. T H U R S D AY M O R N I N G B I B L E S T U D Y

In September the Thursday Morning Bible Study Group will begin the study of David by Beth Moore. In David: Seeking a Heart Like His, Beth Moore explores the life of David from shepherd boy to king. David's life serves both as a good and a bad example for modern-day Christians, as Beth draws spiritual insight and understanding from a man who slew a giant and saved a kingdom. David lived thousands of years ago, yet he dealt with many issues that plague God's people today. We are praying that we can expand our number of partici-pants in active Bible study. We are called by God to know His word and to live by His commandments. If you've ever had doubts, fought temptations, battled personal inconsist-encies, fallen into sin, suffered losses or anguished over fam-ily problems, this Bible study is for you! And, to quote Beth, "If you haven't, you may need to check your pulse!" David is an in-depth eleven week Bible study. It takes us through virtually every twist and turn of David's life as a shepherd, a refugee, and a king. Each week contains five daily lessons, based on Scripture, which each participant is asked to complete. These five lessons are the basis for our discussion groups, which last an hour. We spend the second hour watching a video by Beth which furthers our study. All interested persons are invited to join us and experience God's love and grace as we study, learn and share with other believers. This study will be held every Thursday morning, 9:00 - 11:00 AM. Leaders are Jean Schild and Jannet Kra-mer. Signup list is located in the narthex. Call Jean for ques-tions - 509-2861. Cost of study book is $15.95.

In 1Thessalonians 5, Paul writes, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…Encourage the tim-id, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” God has called us all to build up and encourage one another. For those who are experiencing a really difficult time, our Ste-phen Ministers can provide the special encouragement, care, and support that is needed until you are past the crisis. If you would like more information about Stephen Minis-try, or if you would like to have a Stephen Minister, Please contact Pastor Pat. A Stephen Minister can provide you with the encouragement you need.

A new mission trip is planned for October 20 - 24 to Avery County, NC. Details will follow from the Mission Committee.

A big thank you from the session to Linda Allen and Mothers' Morning Out for the beautiful renova-tions to the restroom adjacent to the Nursery.

Several mission groups have used the Matthew House this summer, many of them working with WARM.

Donations collected during Memorial Day weekend for parking enabled us to send $2500 to the Sthresh-leys in Congo and the Fourth of July parking lot do-nations of $2500 will be used for North Carolina missions.

The Thursday Morning Bible Study will resume in September with a study of the book of David by Beth Moore, led by Jean Schild and Jannet Kramer.

The session expressed thanks to the leaders and vol-unteers who worked so hard to make our Vacation Bible School a big success.

The session recognized the hard work of the Prop-erty Committee in completing many recent projects around the church.

THE PURPLE HEART

CLUB

As the familiar song says “where everybody knows your name”… the Purple Heart Club is the place for you. Are you enjoying the “Golden Years” as promised in so many ads that you have read or seen on TV? Who are you enjoying them with? Have you talked about that place you've wanted to visit for 30 years and some-how never made it there? Do you get together with that friend you see in the store and say “hey, let's do lunch” and that lunch never happens? We here at LCOB are busy helping so many in our community that we would like to be intentional about helping ourselves in the spirit of Christian fellowship. You have raised your families, put kids through college, helped with grandchildren whenever the call comes no matter where they live. You have served as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, sung or still sing in the choir, served on a committee, baked so many meals you have lost count. In other words you have been and continue to be in the thick of life and you don't wear a purple heart on your sleeve saying “Well done, good and faithful servant”. Wouldn't it be nice if someone was providing a social fellowship event for you and all you had to do was show up – take that trip, enjoy a meal, watch a beauti-ful sunset with friends while sipping your favorite drink. Whatever you would enjoy, the agenda is yours for the asking. In the near future there will be a box in the Narthex for you to place your suggestions in. Events that are in the works right now is an overnight trip to Historic Charleston, SC in the early fall and then to kick off the Christmas Holidays a trip to Brookgreen Gardens to enjoy the holiday lights. Watch for details and sign ups in August.

Presbyterian Counseling Center CENTERPOINT Have you wondered how counseling is helpful? Can you think of a good friend who feels stuck or baffled but then discovers something more in their life? Greetings from rural North Carolina. I'm having a wonderful vacation. Wish you were here! Lots of rain and wonderful mud baths make for great pig fun.
