Temba regional court recently found a businessman guilty of trying to kill his wife by shooting her seven times. Magistrate Van den Burg said he was satisfied that the state had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Solly Madileng, 46, intentionally shot his wife Maki on August 7 2007.

The court heard that a week for the incident, Solly called Maki to return to their marital home after she had moved out four months earlier. As part of reconciliation, he asked Maki to arrange a weekend stay for them at the Elephant hotel in Bela-Bela, which she did. They then left their Marapyane home at around 8pm that night. While passing in a secluded area between Nokaneng and Settlers villages, Maki testified, Solly said the car was not moving properly and

stopped to investigate what was the problem.“He went out and I thought he was checking the wheels on my side when suddenly I heard a loud bang. I then saw smoke coming going up and shattered window glasses and I knew it was a gun sound. He fired many times and the next time I woke up I was in a ditch in an open veld and my husband and the car were nowhere to be seen,” she testified.Solly was arrested in Durban two days later. He denied Maki’s version of the story, and told the Temba regional court that she shot her during an argument after Maki had told her she would kill him.He insisted that gun was between their seats for the duration of the trip and that Maki grabbed it and tried to shoot him. He said he did not report the matter to the police because he was still shaken by what had happenedMagistrate van den Berg rejected this and said if indeed Solly was had shot Maki in self-

defense, he would not have fled the scene while she was lying there injured.“The accused claims to have been scared but drove for about 400km to Durban, passing many police stations on the way, and failed to report the matter,” said van den Berg.At the time of the incident, the court heard, Maki had obtained a protection order against Solly for an unrelated incident.Van den Berg it was a miracle that Maki had survived the incident and said had it not been for a passer-by who saw Maki and called the police, she would have died.

“The accused’s actions are not those of a real man. He was married to the complainant for 10 years and the two have three children together. But he shoots her seven times and leaves for the night.”Van den Berg found Solly guilty of attempted murder. Since 2007, the case was postponed 40 times.

Police in Pankop outside Hammanskraal have opened a murder and inquest dockets after one of their own allegedly killed his girlfriend before killing himself - with his service pistol. The incident, which took place on Friday at the man's place, happened five days before the officer was to appear in the Pretoria magistrates court to face charges of abuse laid against him by his now dead girlfriend.

Constable Elias Rabohale, 36, who was stationed at the Mmametlhake police station, also around Hammanskraal, allegedly shot and killed Elsie Masenye, 28, mother of his two

infants before turning the gun on himself."We can confirm that our own officer shot and killed his girlfriend at his place before allegedly killing himself."It is not clear what caused the tragedy as the couple were the only people in the house and there are no witnesses," said police spokesman, Constable Hastings Chaane. The couples' kids, aged 3 years and one year old, were with Elsie's relatives at the time of the incident.Chaane also revealed that Elsie had obtained protection order against Rabohale in unrelated case of abuse."The two were due to go to court in Pretoria in five day's time after Elsie complained that Rabohale threatened to kill," said Chaane.

Kgosi Maloka of Pankop said the incident had sent shock waves in the village and surroundings as it was uncommon for incidents like these to happen in the area."We only see about things like these on tv and other media platforms."So when it happened here many people were really shocked. We are still finding it hard to stomach it," said Maloka. But one of the Masenye relatives, who asked not to be identified said they blamed the state for failling to protect her.

"The fact that she had obtained a protection order against him should have been reason enough to remove his service gun from him. Now look at what he has done with it," she said.

Marriage is something that is acknowl-edged and adored by many but divorce is one of the worst things to happen. The contract that is entered into involves two people and later incorporates the siblings. On the other hand, property is also includ-ed depending on the type of a marriage contract that is entered into. It therefore depends on the contract being in or out of community of property. The latter may also agree with the saying that when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers the brand.Mrs. Moshidi Molefe of Ramotse village had been married for twelve years to her husband. The two became enemies from the thirteenth year and it was not meant to become better. She claimed that her husband became very abusive in their marriage. She added that mar-ried life turned sour and her husband filed for divorce which she contested. She told Ham-manskraal News about her problem with her defense lawyer, Mr. Simon Phiri, who operat-ed from Leseding complex in Hammanskraal. She further explained that she appeared with

her defense lawyer at the Garankuwa divorce court on 11 May 2010 and ever since, had not received her decree of divorce. Moshidi further relayed that she had moved from pillar to post in trying to locate the law-yer in question as he had moved out. She ex-plained that he left the offices that he rented from Leseding and never left contact address. She voiced that she was surprised upon visit-ing the home affairs department in Temba to find that she was still married to “that man”. In her opinion, the matter is a draw back to her since she is involved with another man at present that had already popped out lobola. She said that the matter would turn worse if anything is to happen to happen to her through death that the second man may not have permission to bury her. She explained that it would be a serious tug of war even if her chil-dren have accepted the second man and fully respect him. On the other hand, Moshidi had tried to lo-cate the lawyer’s whereabouts in vain. Ham-manskraal News noted telephonically with the Law Society of Southern Africa that the man

is not practicing law anymore. Mrs. Estelle, of the Law Society responded that Phiri’s name had been scrapped off the law roll in August 2012. She further told Hammanskraal News that for Moshidi to get hold of her file she needed to forward an e. mail to their offices in Pretoria. She also sighed in consternation and exclaimed how somebody could be a married divorcee for so long.On the other hand, Moshidi states that her life is at a stand- still and that her former husband, Molefe, does not even bother to maintain his children. She added that he even brags that the property that they accumulated together will never be in her arms. She stated that she wanted to get all that they have agreed upon in court but without the decree of divorce, it would not be possible. She also voiced her concern that some of the documents that she desper-ately needs are in the house and that she can-not access them at ease. She also referred to some of the necessary document like her children’s birth certificates that are imperative. She concluded in lament that it is bad enough for her to lead a married divorcee’s life.

Opinion piece by Linda Yates

How many of the politicians who profess their undying love and allegiance to our constitution can quote the fourth founding provision found in the first chapter of our country’s supreme law?

Do those who recommend a constituency-based system for our national parliament know that the principle of “a multi-party system of democratic government” comes straight after “universal adult suffrage, a national common voters roll” and “regular elections?” How many remember that the basic principles underlying our constitution were chosen during a multi-party negotiation process?South Africa is a diverse country. We have nine provinces and eleven official languages. Having a multi-party democracy makes sense, because we need to build a unified future to repair our divided past. Political analysts have a theory to describe this. They divide societies into two categories: those with cross-cutting cleavages and those with coinciding cleavages. South Africa, unfortunately, is a country with coinciding cleavages. It is still the case that being born black is more likely to make you poor and uneducated, while being born white is more likely to guarantee you a future that is financially comfortable. This creates polarisation which, in the worst-case scenario, leads to civil war. In such a country as ours, a two-party

system in which one party is very vocal about representing black have-nots and another party, which represents white haves, attack each other’s policies and performance frequently and aggressively does not make for progress. A system with many parties is much better for South Africa, because it encourages a multiplicity of voices and the strengthening of cross-cutting cleavages; for example, the bond between black and white Christians or the common values held by middle-class South Africans of all ethnicities. With the rise of the Economic Freedom Fighters, black votes are now significantly divided and the ruling party is being scrutinized from both the right and the left. Our new democracy and our developing economy need many ideas, many voices and many solutions. One of the dangers of a two-party system for South Africa is that we have an increasing number of voters who are disillusioned with the ruling party, but have also not found a suitable political alternative. These citizens may either sink into apathy or resort to service delivery protests to express their political opinions.

An African man is always praised for fa-thering a child irrespective of the mar-riage contracts and obligations. On the other hand, the parents to the borne child have to work hand in glove to raise their offspring. These are the words of Shep-herd Fatima (33)(pseudonym), a man from Soutpan near Swartdam stad. He claimed that his son, aged 5 was buried in Noroki, a few kilometers south of Makapanstad.

According to Fatima, he was employed with a floor polish company in Rosslyn and had worked there for nine years. He said that he was unfortunate to be rid of his job when he was retrenched three years ago. The man said that he could not help much with the mainte-nance of the child and every hell broke loose. He relayed that his girlfriend, Thati Phokompe (29) (also pseudonym, from Noroki), drifted away from him with the passing of time. He explained that it took him much to look for part time jobs to help feed the child. According to Fatima, the care and feeding of his child was of paramount importance to him than any-thing. He explained that he hurt more every time he could not send something for him.Fatima told Hammanskraal News that the lady pushed him out of her family home a number of times. He further said that she swore to get a man who was prepared to work other than a lazy bum like him. He stated that he was called names since he got retrenched and never believed it to mean much and added that he was positive that Thati was pregnant by him. He further said that his telephone calls were brushed aside from time to time and he wondered why. Fatima acknowledged that they had their squabbles, arguments and brawls like any other couple but was never shunned like that. He also referred to an in-cident whereby he once worked longer hours than usual and was reprimanded. He said that his family loved Thati more because there is

no girl child in his family. The complainant (Fatima) said that a friend told him of his son’s burial five months after. He explained that it took him more than a month to believe until he informed his parents. He stated that his mother told the story to be true after a visit to Thati’s home. He said his mother was also taken aback but comforted him by saying it was not meant for him. “It was hard for me to believe and I had to go and see it myself”. He said. He narrated that he nearly fainted when he was taken to the cemetery, shown the grave with its inscription and nearly lost it. He said he was told that real men look after their children that he was not worth a fa-ther to be told of the death. He concluded that the last nail in the coffin was when Thati told him to get lost and never visit her because he was a lazy and spoilt brat. Hammanskraal News visited Thati’s home in Noroki and was told that Fatima never worked but depended on hand outs from his mother. Thati claimed that the man faked being at work in Rosslyn and that she was informed of the lies. She concluded by claiming that Fatima is a liar and a cheat who did not deserve to be a father to any child. She vehemently denied that Fa-tima is the father and admittedly said that she was doing him a favour when he was doing piece jobs in the three years before retrench-ment. Her Mother, Gloria Phokompe (61) said thather daughter had had it very tough grow-ing the child with her assistance and very little from the Fatimas. She said that her family did not hesitate to inform them of the birth of the child and they did minutely to aid them. A social worker from SASSA in Temba tel-ephonically advised that the party has to lodge a complaint with the local police. She explained that the matter could refer to her department from the interviews with the po-lice. She concluded that the police would re-fer the matter upon findings of trauma of the complainant.

With Winter 2014 here in full force, South African fashion trends are focusing on the iconic 1950s style. To fi nd distinctive items for your closet, from chic European styles to local trend-setting designers, pop into the smaller boutiques. To select your comfortable everyday wear, visit chain stores.

Prints retain their popularity in the stores and in the wardrobes of the fashionable, and will remain sought after, as they have been for the past two years, (even obviously summer fl oral prints) throughout the Winter 2014 season. The long-trending leopard print has left the scene this year, while snakeskin and tiger-prints take the limelight. This season pastels and softer colour trends have successfully replaced dull greys, insipid browns and monotonous black wardrobe shades. Those in the know predict more nude, cream, coral, and mint garments in the softest tones - but this time

with a difference. Add a pop of colour with accessories to break through the fl atness.

Must-have items this coming season: Coats, dresses, chunky knitted jerseys and scarves

At work look: Pair the above with leggings and sky-high stilettos, for a feminine touch at the workplace.

Night out: For a romantic dinner, wear your warm woollies with knee-high boots for a more laid-back, comfortable feel.

A-line coats are a big trend this season. They come in varied lengths and can be worn in many different ways - you can wear a long or short coat with skinny jeans and boots to keep snug and chic on those colder winter days, or you can wear an A-line coat as a dress over winter

Artist: Abel Senosi

CD: Alpha and Omega

Alpha and Omega - the name of Abel Senosi’s CD - is one of the most motivating compilations I have listened to in a very long time. The title track - which is derived from the book of Revelations in the Bible - has a fast and danceble beat. The following two songs are worship songs in which Abel pours out his heart to the Lord and thanks him for all he has done for him. In “Rea u boka morena” (I thank you Lord) about again does a rendition of a common hymn that is sang at a number of churches. The backing vocals on this song, particularly, are very impressive. Amen Halelujah is another fast tempo praise song which talks about the goodness of Jesus Christ and how he is always with his people. “Avulekile Amasango” (The gates are

open) is the last song on Abel’s CD. It is is touching song whose lyrics are an appropriate conclusion to the compilation. If you would like to get in touch with Abel, or fi nd out more about his music, you can call 071 783 4689.

“Avulekile Amasango” is a South African song traditionally sung at funerals to celebrate the life of the deceased & her passage into the next life. This is the last song on Senosi’s CD.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD?26Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."27God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth."We were giving the highest position of responsibility in the entire creation. We need to find all reasons to live up to our personal obligation of being godlike. We were made in the image of God for the purpose of God. We were made godlike for the purpose for which God crafted us individually for His purpose. We must never at any point in time pretend to be God in the lives of humanity. Being godlike and been God are two parallels. It is our responsibility and accountability to find out what our purpose is in order to maintain the image of God. It is the responsibility and accountability of all of us to help one another in pursuit to find the purpose for which we were created lest we become diminished to nothingness which will sadly sadden our Creator. We have a responsibility and accountability to rebuke all those who pretend to be God in the lives of others irrespective of their miraculous performances and healing powers etc. It is our responsibility and accountability to allow God to be God in our daily situations and circumstances. To be made in the Image of God means to treasure the responsibility and accountability to be purposeful in the following dimensions: We need to rule over the sinful nature that suggest a change of the purposeful image bestowed upon each one of us, The Image of God should at all given time to time be kept in a responsible and accountable manner the Creator will approve of. Whatever we do with the God’s Image remains our responsibility and accountability.Should you have interest to understand more for your own betterment then PHONE /VISIT US AT 2249 Block F Industrial Site Soshanguve Tel:012 799 2842 or BEEO COMPLEX HAMMANSKRAAL TEL:0729822449 or 012 711-2139 FOR MORE INFORMATION. Platinum Stars recently returned back to their base in Rustenburg from Botswa-na, where they held a training camp in preparation for the 2014/15 football sea-son. While the training camp was mostly focused on the physical conditioning of the players, the team also had a chance to play three matches against teams that play in that country’s topfl ight league.

While they managed to win all their matches, the club’s Football Manager Senzo Mazingiza told Leseding News that results achieved in friendly matches do not really count for much. “The results are good, but we are aware that it is going to be a very tough season ahead

for us,” Mazingiza said. “The trip to Botswana was very fruitful for us and we are very ex-cited about how well our preparations for the season have gone,” he added. Platinum Stars – who won the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout trophies last season – will be under a lot of pressure to retain their silverware while also going all out to win the PSL trophy. Mazingiza said the training camp was very instrumental in preparing the team for the season ahead, which he said would be very tough. “As management, we are very excit-ed about what we have seen in camp. The whole idea of the camp was to take the play-ers outside their comfort zone and see how they would perform. “Yes, it is going to be a

tough season but we have done our best to prepare and I believe that if we work hard we will prevail.

“We have to aim to do better than we did last season. We will work towards retaining our two titles as well as challenge for the PSL title crown,” Mazingiza said. “All of the players as well as the coaches are aware of what is ex-pected of them and as management we are very confi dent that everyone will be able to deliver,” Mazingiza said. The fi xtures for the 2014/15 Premier Soccer League season have already been released and this has allowed Platinum Stars a chance of planning ahead. As has been the case in the past seasons, the

matches that Platinum Stars will play against Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are likely to be among the most attended by the fans. Chiefs will be the fi rst of these three clubs to play against Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Complex in Pho-keng. The match will be played on August 27. Pirates will then visit Platinum Stars on No-vember 11 for a match against Stars. On November 25, Sundowns will play against Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Complex. Platinum Stars – who are coached by Allan Freese – will play their fi rst match of the season at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadi-um on August 8 in what will be their fi rst game of the season.

Members of the Castle Lager Proteas squad took time out to contribute to a worthy cause by hosting a coaching clinic for visually impaired cricketers in Colombo recently. The clinic is part of the “Seeing is Believing” campaign, which aims to raise funds for Sri Lanka’s visually impaired cricket team heading to the World Cup to be held in South Africa in November. “Mandela Day took place while the fi rst Test match was on in Galle so we sort of see this coaching clinic as our way of giving our 67 minutes for Mandela,” Kyle Abbott said. “The “See is

Believing’ campaign is doing wonders for the visually impaired cricketers in this country and we are humbled to have played a part in raising funds for the initiative” The Proteas and Sri Lankan cricketers have been involved in various fund-raising activities and have managed to raise nearly one million rupees for the charity so far. “We take so much for granted on a day-to-day basis; these players are enjoying themselves in a sport that we enjoy as much, but with disadvantages,” Abbott said. “It was incredibly touching to see the players and youngsters enjoying their cricket so much. We hope our contribution can help their cause and hopefully give them a good chance of excelling in a sport they love.”
