Gates resident Bruce Rychwalski receives Lifespan awardby Kristina Gabalski

Bruce Rychwalski of Gates was recognized during Lifespan’s 20th Cel-ebration of Aging on March 24 with the Eli Rudin Second Half Hero Award.

“The faces of aging who live and work among us.” She noted all exemplify the “new face of aging” - people who are growing older but who are taking advantage of options and choices.

“You continue to live as you have always lived,” Cook told recipients.

Rychwalski says he hopes to be an inspiration to those like himself who have heart problems and heart dis-ease, or who have undergone surgery to implant medical devices such as pacemakers, cardioverter defibrilla-tors, insulin pumps and coronary or thoracic stents.

He is currently in the process of be-coming a volunteer at Unity Hospital and hopes to function as a mentor for patients who are either getting a medi-cal device, or who have already had one implanted.

“I can answer their questions,” he says, “and let them know, I got this and I’m leading a normal life.”

He notes mentoring can help to put a patient’s “mind at ease.”

Rychwalski continues to run, al-though he has to watch his pace and not become winded. He still runs a

Byron-Bergen athletic programs recognized best in sportsmanshipCharacter and sportsmanship are as

important as winning for athletes at By-ron-Bergen Junior/Senior High School. The school’s athletic program has just won the prestigious 2015 New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Sportsmanship Promotion Award. As additional proof of the District’s commitment to character, the girls’ basket-ball team received the Carolyn and Jack Foote Sportsmanship Award, given by the Central Western Girls Basketball Officials (CWGBO).

Each year, NYSPHSAA identifies specific athletic programs throughout the state that best exemplify the highest degree of sportsmanship by all players, coaches and spectators alike. From 100 schools, the Section V Sportsmanship Committee chose only four for this honor, including Byron-Bergen Central Schools of the Genesee Region League.

“Our students and coaches have been working towards this for a while,” said Byron-Bergen Athletic Director Rich Han-nan. “We have participated in the Section V Sportsmanship Summit for the past four years. It is an interactive and informative day for student athletes, filled with lecture, discussion and cooperative games. Every year, several of our coaches attend on-site clinics that focus on topics like positive interactions with officials, and dealing with playing time issues.”

This is also the second consecutive year the Byron-Bergen Lady Bees basketball team has earned the Carolyn and Jack Foote Sportsmanship Award, which they received for the first time in 2007. It re-wards the highest degree of sportsmanship, character and ethics demonstrated not only by players, but also by coaches and specta-tors. Game officials select the winners.

“We have many things to celebrate here at B-B,” said Hannan. “I am so proud of the work the coaches and athletes have done on and off the field, including the varsity programs involved in community service projects. Our volleyball team has partici-pated in cancer walks and supported the Muddy’s Buddies organization. The girls’ soccer program started a Cancer Aware-ness Game that has expanded each year. Our boys’ basketball and soccer programs have also been busy with community ser-vice projects.”

“On the field, our kids are finding success and doing it the right way, which is what makes me most proud,” said Hannan. “In the past four years, B-B teams have won a combined 30 GR League and Section V titles, compared to just eight in the four years prior. I know beyond a doubt that we are preparing students for life after high school, and athletics is an integral part of that entire experience.”

ALL THAT WE HOLD SACRED

www.burgerfuneralhome.com

As evidence continues to mount linking the mind and body, it is becoming increasingly apparent to all that a person’s spiritual bearing plays a big role in determining many life and death issues. Spirituality is an awareness of the sacred core that underlies everyday life, which helps many people deal with hardship. One example of this coping mechanism is a study in which death rates were found to be lower than expected before important religious holidays. This finding suggests that faith might help those facing death to postpone the inevitable until they have passed an important milestone in their lives or the lives of others. If so, death may be more compliant

than we might have imagined.Dying people often feel compelled to resolve unfinished

issues from their past, particularly with family members. They may also have a desire to visit childhood haunts or go through old family photos. These experiences can often enable a person to let go and die at peace. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We offer personalized funeral and cremation services to accommodate everyone’s wishes and budget. We are located at 735 East Avenue, and we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Suss-out John Dunn’s crossword puzzle in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal

Though crossword puzzle constructor John Dunn says he has created fewer puzzles in recent months due to time con-straints, he’s excited that one of his newest will be published in the Wednesday, April 6, 2016 edition of the Wall Street Journal.

This will be the first of his puzzles printed in the WSJ and is theme-based, as are all crosswords in the publication. “You’ll just have to solve it to suss-out the theme!” he says.

Dunn has only submitted a handful of

puzzles to the Wall Street Journal but has had many of his word challenges printed in other prominent publications including eight published in the New York Times and two in the Los Angeles Times.

Dunn, owner of Dunn’s Home Fur-nishings in Brockport and a Spencerport resident, has created several puzzles for Westside News Inc. newspapers Sub-urban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, the most recent one printed in March of this year.

Dissolutionists do notunify the community

It is very disheartening to think that some Brock-porters might accept the dissolutionists’ claim to be the champion unifiers of our community. None of their lead-ers has ever done anything to promote our unity. Noth-ing has been more divisive than their two referendums. Nothing has created more conflict than their cramming over-crowded student housing into single-family neigh-borhoods.

By contrast, I began promoting Town/Village harmony in the early 1970s on a Town/Village cooperation commit-tee. I have been an active member of the Town of Sweden Republican Committee since 1987. I have been the most active member of Sweden’s Landmark Advisory Com-mittee since its formation in 1993. Former Supervisor Connors has suggested that I was the most conscientious member of the Town/Village Comprehensive Plan Com-mittee as a Town representative. I was Supervisor Les-ter’s unofficial trails coordinator and secured an $82,000 grant for the Town.

I organized three of the twelve events in the Town’s Bicentennial Celebration, more than any other mem-ber. I spearheaded the listing of the Town’s High Street Cemetery on the Registers of Historic Places. Supervisor Carges, Clerk Sweeting, and Highway Superintendent Ingraham had me perform their 2013 ceremonial swear-ing-in.

I have regularly attended Town Board Meetings since becoming Village Trustee. The only time I saw Mr. Rhett King at a meeting, he opposed Town, Village, School Dis-trict collaboration. I challenge any of the dissolutionist leaders or all of them put together to match that record for promoting unity and harmony in our community.

Brockport Hill School staff recognizedon Employee Appreciation Day

A group of students brightened the day for staff at Hill Elementary School in honor of Employee Appreciation Day March 4.

Students in Carrie McKain’s BOCES 6:1:1 class at Hill wanted to show their gratitude for all that the school offers, so they decided to do so with flowers.

McKain’s class teamed up with students in Mercy Caparco’s BOCES 6:1:1 class to hand deliver a flower accompanied by a message reading, “People like you help Hill students bloom!” to each teacher and staff member at Hill.

All students also had the opportunity to purchase special vouchers from the school store for one dollar each to acknowledge staff members who positively impact their day. Each voucher included a personal note of appreciation along with a treat. The 6:1:1 classes hand delivered those vouchers and treats in addition to the flowers.

A special thanks to Wegmans for donat-ing money towards the flowers.
