Quote of the month...

Cook the mung beans in plenty of water until just tender. Meanwhile heat the oil and add the mustard seeds, stir for a minute then add the onion and soften until it starts to colour. Add the garlic, ginger and turmeric and keep stirring until it all caramelise.

You’ll need:*1 cup mung beans*1 cup red split lentils*1 onion, thinly sliced*2 garlic cloves, crushed*1 inch ginger, peeled and grated*1 or 2 green chillies, whole*olive oil*vegetable bouillon*1 tsp mustard seeds*1 cinnamon stick*1 tsp turmeric*1/2 tsp ground coriander*1/2 can chopped tomatoes*chopped coriander stalks and spinach leaves (optional)

MUNG BEAN AND RED LENTIL DAHL

Add the chopped tomatoes (you can also use fresh ones) and 1/2 tsp sugar, cook until the oil seeps out and turns orangy red.

Rinse the red lentils and add to the sauce, together with the cinnamon stick, coriander, green chilli, stock and enough water to cover. Cook until the lentils are almost done, then add the drained mung beans and a little of their cooking liquid if needed. Season with salt to taste and stir in some chopped coriander stalks and spinach leaves if you so wish. Serve with basmati rice or on its own like a soup!

A Brief History Of The Bristol Bike Project...

The Bristol Bike Project came into being in December of 2008 after project founders James Lucas and Colin Fan were inspired to set up a charitable bike project while cycling their way through Scandanavia.

James was volunteering with Bristol Refugee Rights and began to understand the importance and need for disadvantaged and marginalised people to be independently mobile in our city. With ridiculously over-priced bus fares and our even more ridiculous reliance on the oil industry to fuel our cars, bicycles make perfect sense for navigating and living in an urban environment.

Posters were put up asking for unwanted bikes and within a few days, they started coming in, filling up our bedrooms and garden spaces; we had no idea that unwanted/unused bicycles were such a huge resource!

We quickly outgrew our simple workshop in an old horse stable on the outskirts of Bristol and our back garden and so moved into our current workshop space in Hamilton House in Stokes Croft in April 2009.

The Bristol Bike Project host a wide variety of workshops as well as offering bikes for sale, servicing and repairs, mechanic and bikes for hire. To find out more visit their website (contact details below)
