HOW DID YOUR “ON AIR” JOURNEY START?”

Ever stop at a garage sale or like event and get stopped dead in your tracks by an item for sale that screams: “Remember me from your past?” Boy, I did recently! It was a Cobra CB Base Radio, Model 89XLR lovingly on sale and display at a local thrift store in Worth, Illinois. (See photo above). And ironically, it had an “Intro to Ham Radio”, book included with it, all for the price of $100. Being that my sentiments were more in love with the radio than my wallet was, I had to be content with just touching and looking at the radio for a few minutes, realizing it was not going home with this old Radio nut today. But what I did leave the store with was a flurry of memories that took me back to the late 1970’s when I first got on the air with my CB License on a Radio similar to the one above. (Yes, I still do remember my CB Call- It was KAMZ 7745!) It was an old Electro something or the other and I bought it at a garage sale and put it in my big basket attached to my bicycle and rode home with my new prize. I could not of been more exited! I could go on the air and talk to guys with real cool handles like Malibu, Carmine, Lightning Lady, Red Fox just to name a few. For real excitement, I would go to Channel 19 and listen to the truckers as they traveled up and down 294 or I-55 looking for bears and traffic reports. Man those were the days! But the years went by and CB and I parted ways much to my chagrin and it would not be till the late 1990’s when these golden vocal cords of mine would grace the airwaves again, but this time as KC9EQQ, and as a proud member of the Amateur Radio community. Radio has blessed me with many incredible friends and adventures over the last four decades and I would not have it any other way. Radio has changed my life in manners both seen and unseen. It is what today drives me to continue to serve you as your club’s President to the best of my ability. So my dear friends, during this season of Easter blessing and thanks, it is my hope that you cherish your memories of your time in Radio, no matter where you started in it, and be grateful for all it has brought you, especially in the guise of all those whose paths have wondrously passed yours during your “On the Air” journeys as I like to call them. Some of those folks who graced us with their paths crossing yours and mine too have left us oh too soon, so let’s take time this special Season to remember them and remember those who still are intertwined with our lives on a daily basis, especially those who like us, live and breathe Radio. And it all began for you and I with that first push of a Microphone- that first push led you to your first “On the Air “Journey. That wonderful journey brought to you by: RADIO! BACK ON THE BEAT: I wish to say thank you to Vice President Jim Riley KB9CYL, Cathy Fleischmann KC9NRH and her husband Bob N9KWG for covering for Nora and I at the March meeting, as Nora and I were out on a photo assignment that night. I’m writing this on Friday March 13. It’s supposed to hit sixty degrees today and that should wipe out the last of the snow. There’s nothing like seeing the snow go away to get a ham thinking about Field Day. OK, there’s yard work, getting the garden ready, painting, planting, and other unimportant stuff, too. A duty roster based on last year’s FD has been emailed to all participants. I’ve asked last year’s crew to let me know if they can repeat in the same capacity. Please let me know either way if you can or can’t repeat. If I don’t hear from you, I’ll be putting the arm on you at the meeting. We need to have all positions filled very soon. Even if all positions are filled, some of them still need backup. Stuff happens and we need someone on standby for some very important jobs. If you can back up our chefs or our trailer hauler, we need you. If you have a generator you can keep on standby, let me know. I am in desperate need of photos from last year. If you have any pictures at all, please get them to me ASAP. I don’t have enough of my own to make a show for the June meeting and you don’t want me to standing there yammering for an hour. Field Day is June 28 and 29 at Altman Park, 116 th and Oketo in Worth. Setup begins at 0800.

Hamfesters VE Testing Report for March 2015

On March 14, 2015, Hamfester's Radio Club VE’s team assembled to administered Amateur

Radio exams at the Oak Forest City Hall. We had one Candidate who passed the Extra exam

and two Technicians who upgraded to General. Congratulations to the candidates. VE's who

assisted me were Ron N9STU, Tim AA9BV, and Ron WB9JYZ. Thank You to all VE’s for your

dedicated time. If any Hamfester Member would like to join the VE team, the requirements are:

Be Licensed an Extra Class, take a Open Book Exam from the ARRL, receive credentials from

the ARRL, and be prompt the 2nd Saturday of each month at the testing Site. Please see me any meeting night or email me

(N9ZD@arrl.net) with any questions.

Amateur Radio Exams INFO:

Hamfester’s Radio Club VE's offer License Testing for those who want to get their first ham license, or those who

want to upgrade to a higher class license. Examination sessions are available on the second Saturday of each

month. We will assist you with completion of all necessary paperwork prior to taking your exam.

Requirements:

A fee of $15 dollars is charged for the examination. Payment is Cash ONLY. Please bring a government-issued

ID; (one ID could be a driver's license). If you would prefer to not use your Social Security Number on your

application, we suggest obtaining a Federal Registration Number (FRN) from the FCC website - otherwise you'll

need to use your Social Security Number.

Upgrade Examinations:

If you are already licensed and are taking an upgrade examination: Please bring your printed original license, and

a copy of your current license that we can keep. Also, If you have recently taken an examination that has not

been processed by the FCC, Please bring your latest CSCE and a Copy of that CSCE that we can keep.

Retaking the Exam:

If you almost passed the exam on your first try, and would like to try again, you may retake a different version of

the exam for an additional $15 fee.

Morse Code Not Required!

Morse Code is no longer required for any level of amateur radio license. All Morse Code testing requirements for

the Amateur Radio Service in the USA were eliminated on February 23, 2007.

Location and Time of Hamfesters VE administered Radio Exams:

Oak Forest City Hall 15440 S. Central Ave. Oak Forest, Il 60452. Doors open at 9:00 AM. We begin testing about

9:15 AM. Enter through the Police door entrance and look for the Amateur Radio testing exam signs for

directions.

***Special note --- upcoming changes in the General Exam:

The Question Pool Committee of the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC) has released

the 2015-2019 Element 3 (General Class) question pool. The new question pool becomes effective for all Element 3

examinations administered on or after July 1, 2015, and it remains valid until June 30, 2019.

The question pool files are available in PDF, Microsoft Word (.doc), and ASCII text formats.

What this means is that the General Exams on July 1, 2015 will be new and anyone wishing to Upgrade AFTER July 1, 2015

should be studying the new question pool prior to the exam.

Application Information

Origami and Radio?

Yes I am one of those people who judges science fair projects for my

kids old grade school even though my children graduated a few years

ago. They need a certain number of judges to send kids on to the state

competition so I help out whenever I can. Over the years I’ve probably

judged dozens of projects on which laundry detergent takes out which

stain the best. Not that there isn’t some interesting science involved, but

sometimes the themes seem all too familiar.

I don’t remember the exact title, but this year our last project at the regional competition was about

how Maekawa’s formula could be used to determine the flat- foldability of different origami bases.

This was definitely something new since I had never heard of the Maekawa’s formula. At this point,

you are probable thinking to yourself : who cares anyway? My only request is if you persevere

through my explanation of the Maekawa’s formula, stick around and we’ll explain why this is important

and how it even involves the future of radio.

When you look at origami folds, some of the folds point down and look like a V – these are called

valleys and some of the fold point up like an inverted v and look like this ^ . These are called

As shaky this may be acceptable and, conceivably, a questionable that is tolerable, but no system can simultaneously sustain a jittery this and that. (It should be noted that the cooling system is not provided, but is required.) No expense has been spared. And the physical construction is exquisite. Utilizing another Aane first, the all-concrete chassis and front panel, the PI 3.5 displays unequalled vibrational stability. mountains. The ancient Chinese came up with these terms which seem perfectly logical. When

paper is folded there will be vertexes where the mountains and valley come to a point. There is also

something called flat fold-ability which means that the structure can be folded flat without it being

damaged. It’s like an accordion being compressed flat and expanding with no loss of function. For

the nonmathematical people, Maekawa’s formula can use the number of mountains and valleys to

determine if an object is flat foldable. For the mathematicians, an object is flat foldable if

|M-V|=0 or 2. This kid who loves origami took different shaped paper bases and made multiple

origami objects. He must have made a thousand fold and then counted mountains and valleys around

the vertices to see which ones were flat foldable. I found it pretty impressive.

Now we get to the who cares part. Imagine trying to cram a 25

meter solar panel into a 2.7 meter satellite. Every bit of satellite space

is valuable, yet a solar panel needs a large surface area once it is

deployed. Robert Lang a physicist and origami enthusiast has

designed a solar panel using origami folds to compact it into the size

of a satellite. In space, it can be unfolded into a fully functioning

power source. How’s that for flat-foldability

Another example is for aneurysm stents. Some of you are already intimately familiar with cardiac

stents. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a dilation of the aorta which is the largest blood vessel in the

body. A rupture of the aneurysm can often times be fatal. One of the treatments is to thread a

catheter through the artery in the groin up to the aneurysm and deploy a stent. A stent is basically a

tube that expands inside the blood vessel and seals off the aneurysm so the aneurysm can’t rupture

and blood can pass through. The stent must be compacted into a catheter with an internal diameter of

about 4.6 mm which will fit through the femoral artery in the groin. When deployed around the

aneurysm, the stent must expand to seal off a blood vessel with a size of around 3 cm. Once again

origami folds have been used to design stents that can perform this function beautifully.

Origami has found a use in folding objects into compact spaces to be deployed later into larger

objects. Could this be used in radio? It turns out the federal government thinks so. They have given a

2 million dollar grant to a Florida professor, Stavros Georgakopoulos, to design antennas using

origami fold that will fit into compact spaces such as a soldiers back pack. The professor imagines

manipulating the origami folds so the antenna is functional at different wavelengths. Wouldn’t it be

nice to have a multi-wavelength antenna that could be folded and stuck in your pocket for easy

transport? The next frontier may be foldable electronics. Someday your 2 meter mobile rig may flat-

fold into your dashboard only to be unfolded for use with the push of a button. Just make sure your

coffee is out of the way.

Not bad having so many applications for the mathematics of folding paper. There may just be a job

for this kid out there who loves origami after all. Anyway, if he ever stumbles across this article, I wish

him good luck with his origami adventures.
