Halton Quil ters Guild
Celebrating 40 years of qui l t ing and fr iendship!
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Sue Paquette, President
It seems impossible that this will be my last Snippets note to write as guild President! The two years have flown by, and despite a few frustrations along the way, it sure has been a lot of fun and very rewarding. When I was a child, I thought it was just one of those crazy things that adults say when they said that time goes by faster as you get older. Little did I know!!
If you haven't already, you should really think about volunteering for the Executive. It's a lot of fun and you certainly get to know a variety of people, as well as feel connected with the guild.
In the meantime, don't forget ... talk to your neighbour, and make a new friend, and maybe meet your new BFF!
Remember … What to bring to the meeting

Program
June 1, 2017 Our End of the Year POT LUCK Dinner and LOONIE AUCTION!
Future Guild Meetings: Do you have suggestions for a speaker or topic?
Are you interested in doing a demonstration at a guild meeting next fall? Why not pair with a friend?
Please remember to collect the large hot chocolate containers for this year’s holiday centrepieces!
Katherine Hunter and Catherine MacMaster, Program
It will soon be time to eat, drink and be merry at our June POT LUCK Dinner … and bid on some great prizes at our LOONIE AUCTION !!!
Don’t miss out on the fun … collect those loonies! You may win one of our amazing auction items while helping the guild to raise funds to continue our education and community projects.
How does it work? A variety of items are up for auction. The MC holds up an item and asks who would like to bid on it.
If you like what you see, you hold up your hand. The MC assigns you a number by pointing at
you. You write the number on the paper provided and toss your loonie in a basket on your table.
You can bid as often as you like on the item. For each bid you are assigned another number that
you write down and then you toss another loonie into the basket.
When there are no more bids, the MC draws a number from a container and calls it out.
If you have that number, you WIN and jump up and down!!!!
If you don’t have the number, you clap for the person who won and bid on other items. .
SO keep collecting those loonies. Think of it this way — 5 loonies give you 5 chances to win, 10
loonies give you 10 chances, 20 loonies give you 20 chances. You get the picture.
AND, of course, we will have change available ! Katherine Hunter
EXECUTIVE MEETING
There will be a brief “hand-off” meeting between the 2016-2017 and the 2017-2018 executives directly after the June potluck at Mainway on June 1st.
This is a time where the new executive member can get a handle on what’s currently happening in the guild as well as chat with her/his predecessor. This will assist the new executive to smoothly transition into their new roles. See you then! Sue Paquette, President

Mystery Quilt 2017-2018
Once again, Detective Chief Inspector La Seam has a new mystery for us to solve! Just as a police detective does when he is trying to solve a crime, you follow CLUES until they lead you to SUSPECTS. These Suspects eventually lead you to the quilt top.
There are still spaces if you would like to join in on the fun. The cost is $5 toward the prize money. Each month you will receive new clues to follow as you piece together this Mystery Top. You will receive the first clue at June’s meeting. In 2015 we had 55 ladies enjoy this program. Their results were terrific. Let’s see if we can top that number this year!! Susie Leaker, Mystery Quilt

June 3, 2017 - As requested by many guild members, Maggie Butterfield Dickinson, who spoke at our Guild last spring, is returning to teach us how to make her Zen Quilt. Come by the Workshop table to see Maggie’s Zen quilt and sign up for this class! A few spaces are still available so, if interested, please come by and sign up.
This is our last workshop for 2016-2017 year. We have tried to provide workshops that have been requested in the past year. Please forward suggestions for future workshops to the committee.
We both want to thank the Halton Quilters Guild for the opportunity to provide workshops of interest to our members for the past two years. It has been a most enjoyable experience. Please consider volunteering to co-ordinate this position with Joyce. Joyce Hughes and Marlene McDaniel, Workshop Coordinators
General Workshop Information: Workshops are $25.00 for guild members and $40.00 for guests (due BEFORE workshop) . A supply list will be provided at the time of payment. (cash, cheque or etransfer) Workshops are held at ST. STEPHEN UNITED CHURCH, 2258 Parkway Drive, Burlington. Remember to bring your lunch to the workshop. Coffee and tea will be provided.
New Member Ambassadors Cathy Marion, Linda Young and Brenda Forsey
What a delightful New Members’ Tea was had on May 6th! It may have been raining outside, but inside was filled with laughter, sharing, show-and-telling, companionship, and delicious food. Thank you to all the New Members and Executive members who participated to make this such a fun afternoon.
Workshop
President’s Challenge Sue Paquette, President
Well, I thought that I had been so careful to plan out the charm squares challenge. BUT, as you all
know, I forgot to leave enough time to incorporate May's yellow squares! As a result, judging will be
held off until the September 2017 meeting, and that means that you have to come back! LOL
You will have the summer in which to complete your project(s). You may use all of your charm
squares or just several of them in whatever you choose to make. It’s all up to you … placemats, a
bag, a wall hanging, a quilt. For example, I am using my charm squares to make some Hallowe'en
placemats, a scrappy quilt with a twist, and a Christmas table topper. Of course, my projects will not
be in the competition, but I will try to have them ready for Show & Share.
Rules for Judging:
1. More than one entry can be submitted
2. No identifying marks on the front
3. Attach name of quilter to the back.
Submissions should be available for judging at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 7th.

Comfort Quilts What a fantastic guild year our Outreach has had. As a result of all your hard work, we have surpassed our goal of making over 200 quilts. AND by donating over 200 quilts to various charities and care organizations in the community, our members have certainly met the requirements of the guild mandate. Thank you all so much. Every one of you have been so supportive and helpful.
Our special project this year, ten quilts for Shifra House, is almost complete. THANKS to so many … all the members of the Outreach team ... the guild members who helped sew and iron during the February Outreach day … the long arm quilters who took on the sewing of the large twin bed quilts. THANK YOU ALL!
I would like to give special THANKS to the Outreach Team who have helped me tirelessly over this past year: Susan McKenzie, Karen Lisle, Anne Klaus, and Betty Sawyer. You are all stars.
We will have many kits to sign out at the June meeting, so feel free to come by the table to pick up one or two to work on over the summer. We are aiming to make our first lot of donations for the 2017/2018 year in the fall, so please help us make this happen.
Happy Stitching, Your Comfort Quilts Team (Outreach)
Outreach Quilts bring comfort … one quilt at a time
McMaster Neonatal Outreach
The McMaster Neonatal Intensive Care Unit lovingly provides medical care for those infants who need a helping hand. With our donation of Special Occasion quilts and Bereavement quilts, HQG members provide some comfort for parents of these infants. With well over 800 precious lives a year coming under the care of the Neonatal staff, the need for an extra comforting touch is great. Once again, THANKS for your support. Sandy Stephen, Neonatal (Outreach)
One of our guild’s aims and objectives is to "participate in community projects”. Members are encouraged to either complete a quilt kit provided by Outreach, make a quilt from their own supplies, sew neonatal blankets OR participate in February’s Outreach Day, so we can give some "comfort" to others in our community.

Planning a road trip this summer? Stop in ...
When visiting these businesses, please let them know that you saw their ad in our newsletter!
Halton Quilters Guild History
When the Guild was founded, there were no quilt shops in the area. The first shop to open was called Patchwork Garden in Hamilton. This later became Quilts and Other Comforts. In the fall of 1987, Sue Osborne, one of our Guild members, opened The Quilt Patch in Bronte.
Today we are fortunate to have so many shops at our disposal. Granted, we do have to plan road trips to reach some of the further ones, but that is never a problem when you get together with your quilting friends!
And, of course, should you come across anything related to the activities of our guild, it would be most appreciated. Please speak to me at guild or via email at [email protected]
