Editor’s Letter

I want to thank each and every one of you for sending in your writing and your thoughts.

It is you who make this magazine amazing. Your emails, articles and artwork inspire me

every day. We have been visiting schools and universities and meeting extraordinary

students. Thank you for being the wonderful people you are.

But this magazine is not about me; it’s about you and your friend, your brother or sister,

or about students you don’t know and have never met before but that inspire you in some

way. It’s about what’s going on in your world, stuff you’d like to read about and things you

want to know. One8one readers deserve to be heard.

There is no other magazine that offers you the opportunity to write the articles in your

own words, or gives you a chance to try out journalism and go to concerts as part of your

“job” for one8one, write about colours (p 22), or a thought (p 24), or try out something

different like boot camp (p 46).

This month is all about Little Red Riding hood eating the wolf and an angel befriending

a skeleton (p 27). Yes, it’s Halloween and it’s time to dress up and stuff ourselves with

sugar, which is not necessarily good for you, as our nutritionist explains on p 57.

Meet our sports editor Hana Hassanbek

Happiness. That’s what Hana means in Arabic, and I hope I bring this emotion to many people who I come across. I’m 16 years old, half Libyan and half English (don’t ask). Currently, I go to the English College, which has great teachers and even better students. EC encourages its students to achieve their full potential, whatever that may be. Whether you excel in the arts, sports or academic success, EC is the place and has been my home away from home for the last five years. One unforgettable thing EC has offered is a group of amazing friends. Some are still here, some left, however no matter how far away they are, we know we are always there for each other. I have just finished my GCSEs, for which I chose History, Business Studies, Arabic and PE. Through the last two years, I have enjoyed these subjects throughly, especially PE. I have many hobbies such as tennis, rounders, netball and rugby. Playing netball at the Dubai Netball League and Under 18s Girls Rugby, both to a high standard, allows me to keep fit and meet new people, which is great. Also with the Girls Rugby, we have won all of our tournaments for the last two years and hopefully that amazing winning streak will continue. Lastly, at the moment, my favorite quote is from the infamous Nikki Minaj, who says, “To live doesn’t mean your alive.”

So if you’re reading this, do something you don’t usually do—something different, something unique. Something that would make you feel like a better person. Even if it’s simply offering someone a smile—it could make their day a whole lot better.

Meet our internFran Kirton

I’ve really enjoyed my month-long internship here at one8one. I’ve mainly been involved in marketing, but I’ve also had the opportunity to write articles and features, attend meetings and media launches, try out new activities, such as boot camp on the beach, and overall, see how all the aspects of the magazine develop and come together to create the fantastic final monthly issue. And i’ve been learning lots of new skills along the way.

It is not your average internship in that you are not necessarily told what to do, it is up to you as to how much you take out of the experience. And you are given the freedom to write about absolutely anything at all to express yourself. The boxer, Muhammed Ali, famously once said, “Impossible Is Nothing,” and I believe this perfectly sums up my experience at one8one, where I’ve learnt that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and have a passion to make it happen. Thus, one8one is a great example of how if you truly believe in yourself and want something to happen, you can make it happen. Furthermore, it has been a really rewarding experience and brilliant to be involved in.

One8one gives everyone the unique opportunity of seeing your crazy individual ideas transformed into a published article in a glossy magazine. A big thank you to Maria, who has been really motivational, inspirational and fun to work with, providing me with constant support and enthusiasm. I’d recommend working at one8one to anyone interested and I can’t wait to see the magazine grow. I look forward to working with the one8one team again in the future.

Virgin opening Dubai Mall

On September 14, one8one attended the official opening of Virgin Megastore’s

flagship store at Dubai Mall. It is the fourteenth Virgin store to open in the

Middle East and the most exciting yet. The store offers an increasing and varied range of more than 45,000 upcoming cool

and trendy products including the latest CDs, DVDs and electronics, to name a few.

The new store also contains “funky zones” for browsing, a DJ booth and a special

concert space, which hosted the first Virgin Megastore Fest, an ongoing live music

event which showcased 25 of the region’s top acts live in store between 15 September

and 7 October.

geTTing To grips wiTh google

The American University in Dubai is this month holding

an information session on its campus for students who may wish to learn about working opportunities at Google’s offices in the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Held on October 30 at 1pm, the meeting will provide information about work opportunities at the internet

giant for both current students and graduates. There will be a presentation, following by a question and answer

session, at which students will be able to find out exactly what working at one of the world’s largest technology

companies is like. The event is only open to AUD students, who must register before attending by visiting http://goo.

anD The winner is…The Times Higher Education world rankings for 2011/2012 were published last month, giving the best university in the world award to the California Institute of Technology, which edged Harvard out of the top spot. The United States came out well, as usual, in the rankings, with 75 of its universities making it to the top 200. Meanwhile, the next best country, the United Kingdom, had 32 of its universities in the top 200. In terms of best countries in which to study, however, the rankings favoured Hong Kong, followed by the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

DuCTaC launChes arTisTs in resiDenCe The first Artists in Residence programme is now underway at Ductac, Mall of the Emirates. This unique programme involves four international artists combining their different styles and cultures to create two public exhibitions to be held at the end of their respective residencies.

Currently, Dubai-based artist Simon Coates is being joined by Ethiopian print maker Ephrem Solomon as the first Ductac residents. The programme is a continuation of the gallery’s mission to promote and develop opportunities for both local and international under-represented artists and curators.

As well as hosting several workshops and master-classes, Ductac’s Gallery of Light is open to the public throughout the residency, with visitors being encouraged to interact with the artists and witness the artwork being created. aeD 20,000 for earThquake relief

Students from The British School Al Khubairat recently presented the Japanese ambassador to the UAE with a

cheque for Dhs20,000, which they have raised to help victims of the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

His Excellency Tatsuo Watanabe accepted the cheque on behalf of the Japanese community in Abu Dhabi at a special

assembly held at The British School yesterday afternoon.

help yourselfWe had the privilege of meeting Joseph McClendon at a seminar at Dubai Knowledge Village organized

by Middle East Leaders. His journey began when he was attacked because of the colour of his skin after his motorcycle broke down in the street. Seeing the anger in him, someone offered him a bookcalled Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and that is when his life began to change. He now

holds a PhD in neuroscience, is one of the world’s top ultimate performance strategists and stands before us with contagious energy.

We asked McClendon, “If you were to help someone, and knew that you didn’t have the time, what would you do?”

He said he’d simply ask them, “What do you want?”

Money well spenT

It was reported this month that the University of Dubai is set to spend $500,000 (Dh1.8 million) investing in two Iraqi universities, which will use the money to improve the quality of their business courses. The money will be given to the University of Baghdad and Al Mansour University College, which wish to have their courses accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The investments are part of a broader range of efforts to improve education as a whole in the war-torn country.

While we all dream about passing our driving test and immediately cruising to university in a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, the reality is that, for the majority of students, this will have to remain a fantasy for now. The legal driving age in the UAE is 18, so here at one8one, we have taken it upon ourselves to help you out in choosing the perfect first car. The shortlist is based on price, safety, features, performance and, of course, style.

Car Lingo: what it all means...HP: Horsepower. The term horsepower was originally invented by the engineer, James Watt, in the eighteenth century. During his work on steam engines, Watt found that one horse can do 33,000 foot-pounds of work every minute . Since then, this measurement has been adopted by the automotive industry as a form of rating the performance of a car’s engine. A car with more horsepower will go faster than one with less.

Types of engines: Larger engines sport larger combution chambers. This is where the petrol is burnt with air to produce energy to drive the car, meaning big engines are good for speed and power. However, in order to save on CO2 emissions and petrol costs, many major car manufacturers are also introducing hybrid cars, which have standard engines coupled with battery-powered electrical engines, allowing them to consume less fuel than a standard car.

The Ford Focus is one of the most complete cars on the road, being well-equipped and well-priced. Regularly topping top 10 lists around the world, the variety of versions of the Focus has helped to increase its international appeal. The 2-litre version of the new Focus offers the innovative and ultra-cool voice command system, which allows drivers to control their iPods and phones with their voices. This is a massive safety advantage as it means the driver can keep his or her eyes on the road and hands on the wheel at all times. But the Focus’s real strength comes with its comparatively affordable price, with new models costing from Dh60,000 to Dh75,000 and second-hand models starting at low as Dh16,000.

Next up is the Honda Civic hatchback. This is a very popular car, with an attractive design that includes a large boot for when you’ve indulged in too much shopping at Dubai Mall. This being a sleek hatchback, there is a small amount of headroom in the back, but this is only a minor flaw in what is otherwise an ideal first car. The Civic regularly scores superb safety ratings, and the car is reasonably priced, with new models starting at Dh74,000, and second-hand examples available for around Dh30,000 to Dn40,000.

The Volkswagen Golf GTi is a very desirable and comfortable hatchback, known in the motoring industry as being smoother and quieter to drive than most of its competitors. While it is a little more expensive—the new model ranges from Dh111,000 to Dh125,000, and second-hand models cost from Dh55,000 to Dh75,000—in comparison to other options, we believe that this pocket rocket with its superior build quality is worth every dirham.

There are good reasons why there are so many Mitsubishi Lancers on the roads of Dubai. The car is competitively priced and its attractive design resembles the famous Evolution rally car, which is also available to buy as a road car, though this version is more expensive. Still, if you are looking for something cool and sporty-looking, and don’t want to break the bank, this is the first car for you. Prices for the new model start at Dh52,000 and you can pick up a second-hand version for Dh18,000.

A further alternative is the Kia Soul, one of the latest offerings from the South Korean superpower, which is currently the fastest growing car company in the world. The Soul is a large and well-equipped car that comes at a reasonable price, with the new model ranging from Dh53,000 to Dh64,000 and second-hand models available for Dh40,000 to Dh50,000. However, though the Kia offers something different, we believe it lacks the Soul of some of the alternatives.

What sort of self-respecting motoring column would this be if it didn’t mention a four-wheel drive or a convertible? Enter the Jeep Wrangler, which covers both bases. Jeep Wranglers are known for being superb off road and, given that Jeep has recently updated its engines, these cars are quickly being recognised for their on-road abilities as well. A solid and cool car, it definitely looks the part for hitting the beach at a weekend, though second-hand models have been known to be unreliable. New cars cost from Dh89,000 to Dh135,000 while second-hand models range from Dh17,000 to Dh40,000.

The Audi A1 is certainly a little expensive compared to the competition, with new models costing anything between Dh109,000 and Dh128,000 and second-hand versions costing Dh100,000 to Dh110,000. And the smaller-engined models may not match the performance of its cousin, the Golf GTi, but the A1 packs plenty of style, making for an ideal first set of wheels. In addition to its exterior beauty, it lives up to the high quality, good driveability and excellent safety standards expected of a car carrying the Audi badge.

Over the past 40 years, it is estimated that one Toyota Corolla has been sold every 40 seconds. Such impressive statistics highlight how popular this model really is. We believe its popularity is mainly down to its constant reliability and light fuel consumption, making it extremely cheap to run. While the Corolla lacks the wow factor, it’s still a set of wheels to get you from A to B right. And because the Corolla does just that while leaving you with a little extra dough, it is definitely one to be considered for a first car. Prices for the new 1.6-litre model range from Dh64,000 to Dh75,000, the 1.8-litre version costs from Dh67,000 to Dh77,000, and second-hand models are available for around Dh40,000 to Dh60,000.

Here is to the crazy ones

It was an ordinary morning. I had just woken up and, out of habit, I grabbed my iPhone to check the time and emails. This is probably the first thing I do when I open my eyes, day after day. Having watched the announcement of iPhone 4S the day before that, I decided to fire up Safari and check the UAE Apple storeand see whether any info on the release date had been posted up. It was numbing, then, to see an image of Steve Jobs grace the start page with “1955-2011” to the left of the picture. It didn’t register in my mind, so I headed to one of the Apple-centered blogs I regularly read. Only then it hit me, Steve Jobs had passed away earlier that day. We had lost a genius.

I never met Mr Jobs, nor did I know of him for my entire life. Yet inside I felt like something had been ripped out of me. I couldn’t understand the reason of why I felt this way, until I opened up a book. As I was reading, I stumbled upon a word I didn’t know the meaning of, and I caught myself touching it to wait for the “define” button to pop up as it normally does on modern phones and tablets. It then hit me. The man has brought technology to the consumer world as we know it today.

Back in 1984, Apple Computer Inc., co-founded by Mr Jobs, had just released the first useable personal computer to the public with an interface that included icons, a desktop and a mouse. Indeed there were computers before the 1984 Macintosh, however none of them had such an interface, which became the basis of all computers today. Before, computers featured boring green or black screens onto which you’d have to type in a syntax command in order to do anything. With the vision of Steve Jobs and the incredible help of his team, Apple was able to change and define the world of computing. The rest is history.

After being forced out of Apple in the late ‘eighties, Steve Jobs went on to found a company called NeXt. It later turned out to be a breakthrough software company with an operating system that is the core of today’s OSX system. It, ironically, happened to be his ticket back to Apple, as the then almost bankrupt company bought NeXt, as well as appointing Jobs to the role of Interim CEO.

While developing NeXt, Jobs founded another production company called Pixar. Back in 1994, everyone in the industry was skeptical about the whole thing. However, by 1996, Toy Story was released, turning out to be not only uber-successful and the first digitally animated movie, but also a pioneer of a whole new industry in filmmaking.

Once back at Apple, Jobs killed the majority of the existing product line, and in 1998, the company introduced a revolutionary personal computer, the iMac. This blew everyone out of the water. It was nothing like its competitors, it had

a fantastic design, it was colourful and, most importantly, fast.

Come 2001, and Steve Jobs was on the stage announcing something people did not even know could exist. It was called the iPod. At the time of gigantic CD Walkman players, the iPod was like a gift from heaven. You could have up to 1,000 songs on a device that could fit into your pocket. The iPod was the product that truly brought Apple back into the game. It was, all of a sudden, cool to have an iPod. In fact, the white headphones became so popular, other manufacturers flooded the markets with their own white headphones.

This should be more than enough for one man to achieve in his lifetime, but not for Steve Jobs. In 2003, he announced iTunes, a software that would store your music as well as give you access to millions of songs for $0.99 each. The era of digital music stores had begun, and there was no stopping Apple from becoming one of the leading digital music distributors.

Then the iPhone was unveiled. I remember watching Jobs’ keynote speech back in 2007, and thinking how correct he was when he said that existing mobiles phones were either useless or too hard to use. The iPhone brought simplicity to the consumers; it redefined what a phone could do. It was not only a smartphone, it was a music player, a full-on internet browser and a phone. By 2008, with the iPhone 3G and the App Store, the smartphone market had been completely changed, with the iPhone leading the rest into the future. Obviously, competitors tried to copy it, but even today, most haven’t quite got it right. What we have in

our pockets now are devices that can do just about anything, and it is all thanks to Steve Jobs’ vision and Apple’s fantastic team.

In January 2010, Steve Jobs was back on the stage telling the world that we actually could have something else apart from a phone and a computer. He explained that there was a niche for a product, never imagined by an average Joe, a tablet. It was Steve Jobs who unveiled one of the most successful products of our time, the iPad. Despite all the criticism and skepticism, people flooded stores all over the world to get their hands on the new device, which Jobs called “magical”. And it was indeed magical; there haven’t been many cases where an electronic product could have such a launch that it created a completely new market. And there hasn’t been a product that made all the competitors work extra time just to churn out anything close to the original. And it was mainly due to Jobs’ vision.

I would like to end this article by saying that I am incredibly grateful to Steve Jobs for bringing us the products we have today. It was the way my MacBook Pro keyboard lit up that made me love it that extra bit. It was the “Hello, you and your Mac were made for each other”, on the instructions booklet that made me smile when I unpacked my first Mac. It was the ease of firing up the iPhone and just using it, while still having the best looking gadget in the world. It is the versatility and intimacy of the iPad that makes it so much fun to use. It is that personal connection that you have with an Apple product that is Steve Jobs’ legacy. So, even though I am sad about his passing, it makes me smile that I have been lucky to live at the same time as one of the greatest visionaries that has ever existed.

Thank you Steve Jobs, may you rest in peace.

Deus EX: Human

RevolutionThe first Deus EX was released in 2001,

and is still considered a landmark game. Now, eight years after the last Deus

EX title, Human Revolution has been released, and it promises to bring back

everything that made the first game so unique. Acting as a prequel to the

series, the game tells the story of Adam Jensen, a security guard working for

Sarif industries. When an attack on the company leaves him on the verge of death,

he undergoes robotic augmentation to stay alive, and goes on a mission to find who masterminded the attack on Sarif.

After being released, the game lived up to its hype and garnered rave reviews from

all quarters, praising everything from its complex plot to its seamless blend of

action and RPG gameplay to its innovative visual aesthetic. It is clear that with this

game, the Deus EX series is back with a bang, and we can expect more good things

to come thanks to it.

RageRage has garnered significant hype

since its announcement, and not without reason. The studios behind it, id Software

and Bethesda Softworks, have a long legacy of great games, and this one should

not be any different. Rage takes place in the near future, in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, similar to the Mad Max films

and the Fallout video game series. The player takes the role of an amnesiac who is the lone survivor of a science

project meant to save humanity. With no recollection of his memory, he is forced

to wander the wasteland, endure its hostilities and make allies in order to

survive.The game blends multiple elements of gameplay, including frantic first-

person shooter action, car racing and vehicular combat, and RPG elements such

as leveling up, building weapons and improving skills. Coming from two giants

in game making, this should prove to be one of the highlights of this year.

Spiderman: Edge of TimeWhile superhero games are known for inconsistencies in quality, 2010’s Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions was one of the highlights of the year, providing a unique take on superhero games. This year, we have Spiderman: Edge of Time, which is a spiritual successor to Shattered Dimensions rather than a direct sequel. Edge of Time returns with the factors that made us love Shattered Dimensions. Once again, the game features the ability to play as two different incarnations of Spiderman; the modern-day Spiderman and the Spiderman of the year 2099, with the actions of one affecting the other.

PES 2012If there is one sports series that can rival the Fifa series, it is Pro Evolution Soccer (also known as Winning Eleven). PES has garnered special appreciation among the Middle Eastern fanbase, with each installment seeing the same success, if not more, than the one that preceded it. PES 2012 is soon to be released, and it refines the gameplay of its predecessors, adding big and small changes, such as an improved refereeing system, animation, AI, physics, and, most importantly, an all-new teammate control system, which allows a player to control secondary players on the field.

PES 2012 will also features Arabic localisation, but this is only limited to menus.

Fifa 12The Fifa series is one of the longest running sports simulation games. Beginning in 1993, the series is still going strong, 18 years later, with the new game improving upon the previous with new graphics, enhanced gameplay, and an updated roster. The latest entry in the series, Fifa 12, has undergone the most radical change the series has seen. The game features a new physics engine, providing the game with a level of realism that wasn’t seen before in any sports game, along with significant gameplay changes and a much enhanced career mode.

However, the biggest addition to the series is the Arabic localisation. Fifa 12 will now feature an Arabic option which includes everything from Arabic commentaries to Arabic menus, with the commentary performed by the legendary Issam Chaouali and Abdullah Mubarak S Alharbi.

Gears of War 3The Gears of War series has been one of the strongest aspects of the Xbox 360, second only to the Xbox’s other franchise, Halo. After the huge success of the first two Gears of War games, the third part comes to conclude the story arc of the trilogy. Gears of War 3 continues the story of Sergeant Marcus Fenix, who learns that there might be a way to save humanity once and for all from the Locusts, and in his quest he undergoes an emotional journey that sees him battling the demons from his past.

Garnering universal praise upon its release, the game has been declared a worthy conclusion to one of Xbox’s most acclaimed series. The gameplay keeps the series’ solid elements, as well sporting an improved multiplayer mode. Fitting for a final entry of a trilogy, the story promises to “answer the majority of the questions that players have about the history of the world and what’s going on.”

Abri

Firstly, how did your band come together? Well, it was between me and Julian Symes, and we just met up and started working on a few songs together. He’s the keyboardist in the band and we just started writing some songs and decided to make an album and form a band, and just start performing live, and that’s how it took off really.

What sort of age group is your music aimed at? Everybody, really. I mean, we are doing music because we love it and because we are passionate about it. We hope that everybody, of all ages and all nationalities, can enjoy the music. We are not really thinking of targeting any specific age group or nationality.

Who are your main inspirations in the music world? There are a lot of people. From people like David Bowie to Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke and Radiohead. The list can go on.

Did you dream that you would be in the position you are now when you first started out? Not really. I mean, when Julian and I first started writing the music, it was because we love music so much and we just wanted to create something that we would listen to and enjoy. That’s how it started. We weren’t really thinking about all of this. This is like a plus for us. The fact that people are into the music and appreciate it and come to our gigs…it’s a good thing.

Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? Just making music. I just want to live off my music and perform and make more albums and just keep on creating music and sharing it with the world.

What sort of message do you intend to give to the public, especially the younger generation, through your music? To just do what you want to do; just follow your dreams. No matter what anybody says or does to try to put you down, just keep on persisting and just keep on putting the hard work and the practice in. And you’ll prevail again. Just follow your dreams and be yourself.

You have performed internationally in places such as the UK, India and the Maldives. What does it feel like to travel to so many places and share your music worldwide? It’s been really good. We’ve been getting positive feedback, which is a good thing. They don’t really know what to expect because we are a band from Dubai playing soul music, so they don’t know quite what to expect in the beginning, but they warm up to it and start dancing. They come to us later on, after the show, and tell us how much they appreciate our music, so it’s really good. It’s the beginning of an international fan base, which is good.

We’re sure you have had a lot of laughs when traveling abroad. What was the silliest moment you have had on tour? I thought these questions were going to be easy! I can’t name just one right off the top off my head; there have been too many good times. We’ve just been acting like tourists everywhere, like in the Maldives, for example, just acting like kids in a candy store really. It’s that kind of idea, nothing specific really.

You have shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the music business, such as Kanye West and Ziggy Marley, and you have also been nominated for the European MTV music awards. How rewarding did that feel? Yes, it’s been good performing with these international acts and supporting them. These accomplishments just show that we are moving in the right direction. It’s like an acknowledgement that we are moving forward.

Let’s talk about your album, Blank Notes. What is the main theme behind it?Well, what we did was re-record some of the songs that we did in the first album,

Sunchild, because we just thought we didn’t do enough justice to a few songs on the album. The other songs, we just wanted to record them and do them all in one take, and just go for the idea of having the band together. For the first album, we didn’t have that so it was just us playing together and writing good music. And we were writing about topics that are relevant in the world, as opposed to writing about clubbing and clichéd stuff like that.

What sort of advice would you give your fans that are interested in diving into the music business, based on your previous experiences? Well, first and foremost, the quality of the music has to be good for whatever genre of music you get into. And then, obviously, you have to get a good manager. We’ve been blessed with Rebecca Brianceau, who’s been managing Abri, and she’s done an amazing job as far as doing the media side and getting us gigs and just getting us out there goes. That’s very important as well. That’s it really; just having good music and having a good context. Also make sure you are on the internet as well; get on Facebook and Twitter and get your website done as well. It doesn’t really end at the music. There is a lot of work that goes behind the music.

If you could sum up your style of music in one word, what would it be and why?Uplifting. Vibrant. Energetic. Whatever music we do, it just has to feel good. When people listen to it or see us performing it, it just has to feel good, the vibe has to be right.

Edward Maya dominated the charts in nearly every European country when he released his first massive hit single, Stereo Love. The song, released in the summer of 2009, featured another Romanian artist, Vika Jigulina. The record topped charts in dozens of countries worldwide and remained in the European Hot 100 for 47 weeks in total. Edward then went on to produce and create the amazing This Is My Life, which continued his dominance of Euro Trance music around the nation in 2010. After he formed his own label, Mayavin Records, in 2011, he went on to create the Euro Trance hit Desert Rain. Edward is not going anywhere, and his record production is definitely going to continue to please clubbers around the world for a long time.

Not everyone knows exactly who Dan Bălan is, but when asked if they know about the Chica Bom dance girls, there is a definite light bulb moment. Dan Bălan was originally part of the band O-Zone, which many recognize by their song Dragostea Din Tei, which, despite being in Romanian, managed to work its way up several music charts worldwide. Every hardcore clubber will agree whole-heartedly that the most popular man on earth, as of right now, is none other than Mr Saxobeat. He was created by Alexandra Stan, who, with this hit record, has shot up music charts around the world. Saxobeat defended its position of number one in Romania for eight consecutive weeks, making Alexandra one of three recent Romanian singers that have come out of the blue and taken the globe by storm with their hit singles. Saxobeat has peaked at number three in the UK, and is only now starting to enter the United States charts to begin its domination there. As far as fans are concerned, Alexandra can break out of prison with Mr Saxobeat in her video as much as she wants. It’s a viewing pleasure.

Has it ever occurred to you that certain people in your life have a great impact on you? Have you ever felt that someone you have never met was someone who could have changed your life? My uncle, who was a part of the people around me, died at a young age; he was gone before his time. Imagine he was here; imagine what life would be like. Just as John Lennon sang, “Imagine all the people, living as one.” I beg for a day that I will be able to meet him, or maybe learn something worth knowing about him. I live in a world of “what if” and, as seen, it is not a pleasure, but then again, your life will always be a “what if.”

There came a day that I knew was going to come, the day I woke up and realised something was missing. It clouded my mind by allowing me to dream of this lost soul, dreaming of what his interests were, what life through his eyes was like. Will anyone be able to fill the curiosity that pressures me to find out the least bit I can about him? I come to wonder if life would be different. Life itself, is it a drastic change with someone missing?

In my head, I have fictional characters that make up the scene in the hospital, with a sand clock on the table next to his head that only I could see. The atmosphere was filled with desolation, the air felt poisonous like a room filled with gas, the faces were as pale as ghosts, each with a story behind them. Suddenly, the room was colourless, and it all started to feel like we were a part of a black and white movie in the mid ‘twenties. The sand clock seemed to slow down, and maybe this was a way of God allowing us to insinuate the

farewell ceremony, but, then again, it was all in my head.

A certain question crosses my mind from time to time. I think of him and his way of thought about life. Did he see the world as an absurd planet with carnivorous humans fighting for peace that was never going to be found, or was he the simpler type who saw the world as a unity of one, where people fight battles together as brothers and sisters? Sometimes I imagine him with us in places, where we’re all united. I place him in the room with us thanks to an increasingly hungry imagination that strives to dream. I’ve been able to consider him, full-spirited, with us today. His absence is like the Doors without Jim Morrison, or the Beatles without Lennon.

As music was feeding into my ears, I felt like I was experiencing a vision. It felt like a dream, but this I could feel. It was of

a time when we first united some place nice. I dreamt that he walked me around the place that he has been staying at. He showed me his favorite music, and I showed him mine. Then he asked about my life, and I told him all about it. I talked about everything. Then it was time to leave and I felt satisfied with what I have done and the void had been filled, the void that was in my heart for so long. I returned to reality knowing I won’t be able to tell anyone about the dream because it does not affect them as much as it affected me. No one will feel the way I did, or the way I felt satisfied. It breaks my heart to see him go, but maybe I will see him in my next dream.

Throughout writing this, I felt as though I was floating in my head. All the feelings, pictures, sounds and faces generated from my imagination are what allowed me to fill the smaller void of curiosity inside by convincing myself that what I had created

in my head was the real image of what I want to see. The great ability of being able to imagine and feel in states of emotion that some people are incapable of doing allowed my body to feel the satisfaction I was thriving for, the answer I was waiting for.

I didn’t have to wait for someone to console me, or to advise me or even to show me what I want, allowing my thoughts to venture through my past, my knowledge, my dreams and the reality I created that seemed to be another person’s life on the inside of me. vampire Count Dracula for the night, then get those fangs out, pale it up and pop that collar.

Have you ever wanted to change the color of your eyes? Well, you can but it doesn’t just stop at colors. Take it to another level and experiment with different patterns and designs. You’re probably thinking, “since when is there such a thing as patterned contact lenses?” Well, there is a design to suit all costumes ranging from “red twilight” to “white zombie”. This is an extended diary of a mid-western girl named Lee Fiora, who

moves to a new school in a new area and has to deal with the average

obstacles of a typical teenage girl in new high school. A creative new

insight with several morals to be learnt from it, Prep allows girls to

view their own high school lives from an alternate perspective. A long book, but a worthy read,

it encompasses the pressures of being a new student, the fear of

being judged, the simplicity of peer pressure and how people are

influenced by it, mixed in with a few laughs as well. This novel is perfect

for those who want an interesting story.

An epic masterpiece of historical fiction followed by three consequent reads within the Emperor series. The story

follows the lives of a young Brutus and Gaius (Julius) Caesar, and the challenges they face growing up in Ancient Rome. The story is a portrayal of the two boys growing up and their story is intertwined with the goings-on at the senate, the fields, the

gladiator stadium and the streets. There are wars outside and inside the Gates of Rome. This makes for a great story, as it forms the basis for Caesar’s life. Filled with games, politics, battles, romance and many other aspects that create a great historical fiction novel, Conn Iggulden’s reputation does not

supersede him, and the quality of work is incredible.

Every day is a struggle as they say, but for some, it is a much more difficult struggle than for others. For the young

men in this book, a marathon of a struggles and obstacles are overcome for the sake of friendship. The boy in the

striped pajamas is a young boy trapped on the inside of a concentration camp, and another young boy discovers

him on the other side of the fence. Through a whirlwind of political innuendos and limitations, the boys find ways to play together away from the adults’ looming eyes. With a

tragic ending, this story is one that will stir emotions and make you want to read it all over again.

“I have just recently started dancing at the professional level and would love to carry on with it as it fulfills my passion.”

Dance is often an overlooked form of art, because it mixes athletic ability with soulful expression. In the UAE, there are few outlets for pursuing dance as a serious passion, and yet the country plays host to many budding dancers with amazing capabilities, such as 19-year-old Tom Carre. A great example for figuring out what your passion is and pursuing it as far as you can, Tom has made an impression on the local community through his dance abilities and dedication, as well as continuing to be a model student.

How long have you been dancing? I’ve been dancing since the age of eight, from what I can remember. It wasn’t really a structured dancing time for me; back then it was more of a mess around with a group of friends kind of thing. I started properly dancing in a class and performance structure four years ago, which is when I started taking classes with Sharmila.

When did you first realize that you had a passion for dancing? I first felt a passion at a point when I was break dancing with my friends and battling. That was my first experience with my passion for dance. When I really started feeling it was when I was promoted from level 2 with Sharmila to the teen class. This is when I really felt that passion for dance grow, and as I improved, I went into a mindset of going even further and pushing my levels as a dancer.

How does your schedule work around dance? Is fitting in your studies an issue? Since dance is in the afternoon, I usually do have time to get work done after school, as I have a few hours to get my work done and be able to have some free time before dance starts. Fitting in my studying time has to be planned around certain areas where its either after dance or a few hours before dance. But depending on rehearsals, I have to plan accordingly for me to be able to fully commit to dance and my studies at specific times.

How would you describe your dance career with Sharmila? All I can say is that I would never have

had such an opportunity anywhere else in the world to be with such an amazing choreographer and to perform at a professional level. There is really nothing more that a dancer could ask for.

Where do you see dance in your future? Do you plan on going pro? I would like to carry on with dance and study in either America or England, preferably the States as the standard is higher. I have just recently started dancing at the professional level and would love to carry on with it, as it fulfills my passion.

What are your other passions besides dancing? Being a DJ mostly, because music is a large part of my life outside of dance as well. And I also play other sports such as football.

How does your family play into your dancing? My family is very supportive towards my dancing, as well as my sisters, as it has started to become a family-based event. My parents encourage me with my passion and are behind me in any decision I would like to carry on with my dance career. It’s become a part of their lives as well as mine.

Would you say you’ve grown as person from being a dancer? Definitely. In a way, it has made me more mature, and it has given me a better understanding in terms of life, in a state of working hard for what you want to achieve, and eventually getting to where you want to be. It’s helped me become more mature in many ways.

Who would you say is your dance idol, someone you revere? Sharmila, because she has brought me all the way from being a complete beginner to performing at a professional level and has further sparked my passion in dance – she encourages me through her dancing style and choreography.

So what is the point of your dancing? Is it some sort of release, is it an athletic workout? The point of me dancing is purely for the passion, my love for the activity and being able to perform at a professional level. I consider it amazing for me to be able do something I love at a such a high level, and enjoy my passion to my maximum potential. Of course it requires a fit attire and a strong structure to be able to perform at a certain level, which is what the classes develop in terms of dancing and performing.

What is your favorite genre of dance and why? I would have to say hip-hop, as I have loved the music since I was a kid and it really influences me in my dancing.

Do you do other forms of dance? Do you find that switching genres is difficult? Sharmila’s company and choreography isn’t based around one genre; Sharmila is an all-rounder, meaning that she choreographs and gives the dancers a compilation of styles such as ballet, hip-hop, street jazz, technical and lyrical. We are always switching styles and are constantly dancing other genres. Since we always experience different genres in class, it isn’t too difficult for us to change at any time, so I’m always mixing up the genres of dance I perform.

You’ve been in several of Sharmila’s dance shows and classes. What has that been like as an experience? The best—I couldn’t have asked for more. What makes it even better is that I have been lucky enough to be given opportunities to perform in front of large audiences.

What would you say are your best memories of dancing? Performing in the school show, other shows and the summer workshop in Dubai.

So it the summer is over, there is no new iPhone, Android is still the same, and we’ve had the BUILD Conference.

Yep, it finally happened, Microsoft has awoken from its more-than-a-decade-long sleep. On September 12, all the ears and eyes were on Microsoft and what they had in store for us always-hungry and never-happy gadget lovers. The giant from Redmond unveiled its Windows 8 platform that is supposed to be the “one OS to rule them all”, working seamlessly between PCs , tablets and phones. Amongst numer-ous prototypes of ultraportable note-books, they showed off a new Samsung Prototype tablet, sporting a 1.5 GHz processor and, obviously, Windows 8.

Now let me tell you, the OS is beautiful. It is a tablet running a full OS, not a skinned-down , tablet-specific OS, though it is a clearly touch-concentrated OS. What-ever Apple did to tease us with OSX Lion, Microsoft took things to the limit. It is all about full-screen apps that take advan-tage of the monitor’s real estate. Even though the OS is new, after a few minutes it feels like you’ve known it all along. As I mentioned in the previous issue, the design is based on the Metro UI that is currently on Windows Phone 7. However, instead of navigating vertically, the navi-gation on Windows 8 is horizontal. Swipe

Moving on, let me introduce you to the beautiful HTC Sensation XE. It comes with a bumped-up 1.5 GHz processor and, wait for it, Beats by Dr Dre audio technology, with the latter being the reason for this product’s re-release. This is the first fruit of the HTC-Beats deal and, frankly, I am interested to know how the whole loud-speaker works out when this beauty is released. It is worth mentioning that, once the headphones are plugged in, the audio settings automatically switch to a Beats profile, which is supposed to take you to that new, divine level of audio indulgence.

How long will you have to wait? Not too long, according to HTC, the Sensation XE will ship later this month in Asia, Europe and Middle East.

I should finish by saying that it is fantas-tic to finally see a true competitor in the tablet market. Tap on a shoulder for MSFT. Now it’s all about time.

from the left of the screen , and you get your multitasking UI that flicks the next app and fills the screen. Swipe from the right, and you get “charms”—search, start, settings, share and devices. The search feature is pretty cool, and allows you to not only search your device , but also web content, as well as the information within the apps installed on the device. The UI is made up of tiles, which are customis-able and live. You can add as many tiles as you want and, overall, the feature is pretty neat, very futuristic and more fun than old, static icons. Win 8 will, addition-ally, feature NFC technology for a “Tap to Share” feature, which pretty much means you could touch a tablet with a phone and the selected data will be shared between the devices. Amongst other stuff is the Microsoft Store, which is said to have apps for Windows 8 (Metro), as well as the legacy Windows apps.

Microsoft stressed the fact that you will be able to run Windows 7 apps on Windows 8 in the same UI used in Windows 7, which means you could fire up good ol’ Photo-shop on a Win 8 device and, in theory, edit your face away to happiness. If this is true, then Microsoft might just have come up with the proper competitor to Apple’s iPad and insert-your-favorite-Android-tablet-here, but with a totally fresh and radically new approach. Anyway, don’t run off to sell your iPad just yet; according to the big M, this stuff won’t ship until mid-2012.

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORNCast: Rowan Atkinson, Gillian AndersonDespite being a generic Bond film parody, the first Johnny English film’s star, the great Rowan Atkinson (known to many as Mr. Bean), and its over the top, self-aware silliness made it hard not to like the film. Now, Johnny English returns with a sequel and, after years of training in Asia, his assis-tance is required again by MI7. Unfortunately, he is still as inept as ever.

FORCE (Hindi)Cast: Johan Abraham, Genelia D’SouzaAction movies are all the rage in India this year, and joining the list of stars banking on the genre is Johan Abraham with Force. The movie sounds nothing from the ordinary—Abraham plays a hard-as-nails police officer who is currently busy cracking down narcot-ics and dancing in the desert with the wonderfully bubbly Genelia D’souza. The trailers are over-obvious about the film’s USP, which are the action sequences and Johan’s new, pumped-up body. While he does boast a massive fan following, it remains to be seen if the force is with the Force.

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo

Set sometime in the future, the film depicts a world where robots have replaced humans in boxing, and all boxing matches are done by machines. Hugh Jackman plays the role of a former boxer who, along with his son, builds a boxing robot to compete for the champion-ship. When a film combines science fiction, boxing and robots, how can we not want to see the results?

Another body-switch comedy, another life lesson to learn. Two best friends who envy each others’ lifestyles acci-dently switch bodies, and soon they experience the lifestyle that they have always thought they wanted. Comedy ensues.

KILLER ELITECast: Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Robert Deniro

Jason Statham is back with another mindless action movie (or so we hope) with Kill Elite, and he’s also roped in De Niro and Clive Owen to go ballistic. De Niro and Statham were once teacher and student, but are now pit-ted against each other in an operation that spans from Australia to the Middle East. We would laugh and scoff at the predictable storyline but this one is actually based on a true story, so...

Cast: Logan Lerman, Matthew MacFayden, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Milla Jovovich

Each generation seems to have its own Three Musketeers adaptation, and now we have one for this generation. The film tells the classic tale of three past-their-glory musketeers who must help a young D’Artagnan to prevent a conspiracy that aims to seize the French throne and ignite war in Europe. The film combines the classic tale we know with its own steam punk aesthetic and stylish action, and the result will sure be interesting.

DC vs. MARVEL COMICS

With all the superhero movies out right now, the main question on everyone’s mind is: DC or Marvel?Here is a quick guide to simplify things and clear a few doubts.

Team DC

FlashFour different characters have assumed the identity of Flash throughout the superhero’s existence; Jay Garrick, Bart Allen, Wally West and Barry Allen, the last one being a pretty good friend of a certain Mr Hal Jordan (the Green Lantern). Flash possesses super speed and according to issue #463 from the Adventures of Superman comic, he can run faster than the man of steel.

FYI:Neil Patrick Harris from How I met Your Mother and Ryan Renolds from The Green Lantern are two actors who have been rumored to play The Flash in the upcoming movie.

The Flash’s nickname is “the Scarlet Speedster”.

The Green LanternHal Jordan, a test pilot, gets chosen as the first ever human to be a part of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic brotherhood of warriors who protect the universe. Each member of the Lantern Corps possesses a ring that gives them super powers and the ability to control the physical world using their willpower and strength.

FYI: The Green Lantern and the Green Arrow shared a comic series and have teamed up several times.

According to the comic series, Hal Jordan went crazy and ended up killing almost all the members in the Green Lantern Corps.

BatmanBruce Wayne swore to fight crime after witnessing the murder of his parents. After training physically and mentally for several years, Batman was born. Unlike his peers, Batman does not possess any superpowers, however, his martial arts training and immense wealth coupled with science and technology help a lot.

FYI:Batman can read lips.

Robin’s motorcycle is called the Red Bird.

The Dark Knight was the first Batman film that did not use the word Batman in the title.

Captain AmericaSteve Rogers was a skinny, sickly young soldier, deemed unfit for military service. He then volunteered for a secret military project that turned him into a human weapon. His costume bears a re-designed American flag and carries an indestructible shield that can be used as a weapon.

FYI:Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, was Johnny Storm, AKA the Human Torch in Marvel’s Fantastic Four Series.

Tommy Lee Jones, who plays a part in the Captain America movie also played Harvey Dent, AKA Two-Face in Batman Forever (1995).

Captain Britain, his English counterpart, is another character within the Marvel family.

Iron ManOne of the most reckless and arrogant of the lot, Tony Stark is Iron Man, an industrialist, billionaire and engineering wizard. After Stark gets kidnapped, he is forced to create the world’s ultimate weapon of mass destruction. Instead, he created a suit to escape from his captors. Like Batman, he does not possess any superhuman powers and relies on his wealth and technology to help him fight crime.

FYI:Nicholas Cage was interested in the Iron Man role. You might remember him from Ghost Rider (2007), another Marvel character.

In the first Iron Man movie, when Pepper, his assistant, finds Stark removing his damaged armor, Captain America’s shield is clearly visible on a table behind him.

ThorThor, son of Odin, is a warrior from the realm of Asgard. He was banished to Earth for his arrogance and, in turn, falls in love with Jane Foster, a scientist. Drawing immense power from his mythical weapon, the hammer Mjolnir, he guards Earth from evil. According to the comics, Thor is also one of the founding members of the Avengers Initiative.

FYI:According to the comics, Thor and the Greek God Hercules are really good friends.

Clint Barton, the archer who keeps his aim locked on Thor while he tries to lift the Mjolnir during the movie, is Hawkeye, another Marvel character set to feature in The Avengers movie.

Photography is becoming more and more popular; it’s creative, easy to do and fun. But when I interviewed Haziq Araffin, I found out how much more interesting it really is. His inspiration to start photography is a similar one to most photographers.

He says, “It’s for memory’s sake. Seeing what things were like and how they are now. Seeing all the places we’ve been to, all the people we’ve met and the experiences we’ve gone through.”

However, his main motivation is “the world he lives in, exploring new places and looking at old, familiar things in a different way.” What makes Haziq’s photography unlike other photographers’ is that it is all spontaneous; his photos are not planned and, in my opinion, that is how the best photos can be achieved. When I asked him if he believed that photography could simply be learnt, he answered that there are two important qualities a photographer must have. One is a “natural eye” for the right shot, and the other comes with the technical aspects, such as the aperture and shutter speed settings, which can be learnt. Nonetheless, he believes, “One can also take great shots without these if they have the quirky, creative outlook on things, and can capture something in a way it has never been seen before.” As most artists follow a mantra of their own, Haziq’s is to always tell a story with his photos, and to give the viewer something they haven’t seen before, something that makes them question what, how, where, why and when. This is what makes a photograph powerful. Although photography is his preferred, and best, creative outlet, Haziq also enjoys writing poetry and creating traditional visual arts. How does Haziq get people to acknowledge his work? Well, he has a Facebook fan page, as well featuring in blogs and school art exhibitions. He has also started printing some of his favorites and selling them. His advice to those interested in starting photography as a hobby, or a future career, is to just go with it. Take a camera wherever you go and just take pictures of interesting things from interesting angles, it all becomes natural. by Shalyn Wilkins

Boot camp

On a hot Saturday afternoon, we got together on a beautiful beach to try out boot camp. Who would have known it would be so much fun? It was way beyond what we had expected, and we didn’t even notice the heat. There was shouting, cheering and loads of laughter. Even the coast guard stopped to see what we were up to.

Fitness 02 has two sets of boot camps. There is the Renegade Bootcamp, which is for people that are already fit, and there is Bootcamp 101 for beginners. You can imagine what Zena chose for us. Boot camp is perfect for getting in shape, burning loads of calories, improving cardio endurance, having a great time and making new friends.

Fran Kirton: Boot camp was a really fun and physically challenging experience. I’d always wanted to try it out and Zena was a great coach and really motivated us to keep going, despite the heat of the Dubai sun. We tried out a series of different circuit-style exercises, and my favorite was definitely boxing.

Boot camp was a much more interesting and disciplined way to work out-it definitely beats spending hours in the gym. However, be prepared to have sore arms and legs the next morning. We definitely worked up a sweat, but felt great afterwards. For anyone that wants a unique, refreshing and exciting way of getting fit, I’d definitely recommend boot camp.

Hana Hassanbek:I wasn’t really looking forward to boot camp in the heat, but once we got started, I knew that we were in for an adventure. As a group, in which some of us had met for the first time, it was great; we all supported and cheered each other on, especially through the obstacle course where you set a personal goal to beat your previous time. My favourite was the boxing, as we used our core muscles and developed other skills. Overall, it was an amazing experience with a motivating instructor. I would definitely take part in the boot camp again.

Emily Kirton: Taking part in the boot camp was a lot of fun but also so much hard work. Learning how to punch properly in the boxing exercise could be really useful, and the obstacle course was really tough, but it was very motivating to try to beat your own scores instead of others’. The instructor Zena was very inspiring and encouraging.

Tom Blackhall:When I arrived, I wasn’t exactly looking forward to the exercise in the heat. But once we got started, although it was hard work, I really enjoyed it. Zena, our trainer, was really motivating and made the whole thing much easier and enjoyable. I will definitely do it again when I get the chance.

Frank Mulholland:It was a fantastic experience working with the Fitness O2 instructor, Zena. I really enjoyed the work-outs she got us to do, and my favourite was the obstacle course, for which we were made to beat our own time. I would love to do it again.

My friend and I were roaming around Karama searching for a backdrop for a

photo shoot, just for fun. I really like Karama because some areas have this

sort of vintage touch to them. We finally found an old building, where we took

most of the pictures, including this particular one. I asked her to pose,

holding her watch up, while I took the photo. She worked the expression bit

for me. I named it Rebel because it shows a 20-year-old woman wearing a

Sponge Bob watch that she got with a happy meal from McDonald’s, letting

everyone know that it’s not just kids who enjoy the occasional toy. I

used Photoshop and Picnik to create the effects here and decided to go with

a poster-like approach.

I felt your pain as I read your query. I imagined you feeling betrayed as you sat listening to your best friend talking about you. As individuals, we always have choices. From what you have written, I can see three possible choices:

1. Tell your best friend that you heard her talking about you in the bathroom. (Expect raised defences and possible denial)2. Choose to end the friendship and never speak to her again.3. Pretend that you didn’t hear her, resent her but carry on with the friendship.4. Sit down with your friend and talk to her about what you heard.

My suggestion to you is that you sit down and communicate with your best friend. I am recommending a very mature approach that entails the belief that “nobody gets to be wrong”. This approach encourages both people to take an equal responsibility in the relationship.

Start by telling your best friend a characteristic that you appreciate about her. Then acknowledge how wonderful the friendship has been for you. Doing this will soften the emotional atmosphere and remind you both about how special the friendship is.

Next, tell your friend that you are feeling hurt because you overheard her talking about you in the bathroom. Explain that you were both surprised and confused to hear her speaking this way about you. Remember to choose your tone and your words carefully. You want to keep the atmosphere open so that you can have a calm discussion. Expect that your friend may become defensive, and her reactions to your announcement may surprise you. Keep calm and refrain from blaming her for other irrelevant issues. Keep yourselves focused on the topic at hand. Sometimes, as a form of defence, people throw blame at the other person, and if you participate in this behavior, there will be no gains for either of you or for the friendship. Ask her if she meant the things that she said and be open to hear her side of the story. There may be a reasonable explanation to her unskillful method of communicating her feelings.

Finally, together as best friends, you can decide what comes next for your friendship. I just want to say that relationships naturally have highs and lows. This experience may feel like a low but the empowerment and communication it will offer you both can help your relationship to experience a wonderful high.

I was back-stabbed by my best friend. We have been friends for over four years, and we have had our arguments, but we always made up very quickly. She was like a sister to me. I don’t know what happened, but I overheard her talking about me to another friend in the bathroom and was shocked to find out that she’s been doing that all along. I don’t know whether I should tell her what I heard or just never to speak to her again. Either way, I will not be her friend any more.

I am overweight and need help. I read a lot of articles and watch so many programs on TV, where they are so good at telling you what to do. And it never works. I can not afford to go to the gym or get a trainer, and every time I go for a jog or a walk, it only lasts for about two days and then I stop. I heard that this is all in your head and that you can change the way you think so you can be motivated. Is that true? How can I do that?

Thank you for sharing this very important concern. Weight issues are challenging for many people, no matter your age. Bravo for being brave and reaching out for help. My first suggestion is that you ask yourself why losing weight is important to you. Aside from the usual “being healthy” response, dive deep into yourself and elicit the want that you have. I say this because if losing weight is not that important to you then no matter what trainer, exercise program or eating habits you begin, your efforts will be unsuccessful.

Next, start a journal. Note down how you feel throughout the day. Do this for at least two weeks. Reflect on your entries. Look for the times that you have the most energy and exercise at those times. Sometimes, even when we have the best intentions, we are not successful because our timing is off. I believe that planning effectively aids in our success. Have you asked a friend to join you? Perhaps starting this new approach to exercise will be more fun if you could share it with a friend or a family member.

Finally, sometimes the belief that you will be unsuccessful with your exercise approach is enough to make you unsuccessful. Changing the way you think, together with making the changes I have suggested, will help you to feel stronger and empowered in your journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Have fun and remember to appreciate your efforts, no matter how small they may seem.

I was so excited to leave for university after school was over; I couldn’t wait to get away from my parents and start something new in a different country. I might sound very stupid when I tell you that I miss my family and friends in Abu Dhabi. It is much harder for me to fit in and the workload is twice as much. Why am I feeling this way? I’m happy in general but this feeling is bothering me.

I come from a very conservative family. My best friend at school is English and their family is different. She is allowed to do anything she wants and go wherever she wants and I am not. Even when we go out, my mother comes with us all the time. We never do anything wrong, I just want my mother to leave me alone and sometimes let me go to my friend’s house. How do I convince her?

Thank you for sharing this issue with our readers. What you have written is a growing concern for both parents and teenagers. As students, you are expected to learn and discover amongst a multi-cultural peer group but, at home, parents are struggling to maintain their traditional cultural upbringing. As both a parent and a coach, I can understand the challenges that this issue is creating in the homes of teens around the UAE. I suggest that you open a conversation with your mother. As always, I caution you to be careful with the words that you choose and the tone that you use with her. This topic is very sensitive for both of you and it may create a “defensive zone” very quickly. Please remember that a “defensive zone” is not a “safe and open zone”, where understanding and communication are encouraged. I ask you to start by appreciating your mother’s effort and love for you by her trying to give you some time with your friends while still trying to protect you. Ask her what it was like for her at your age. Listen to her with the intent to learn about her experiences. Ask her what her fears are as the parent of a teenage daughter. Share your view about this issue. Remember to be cautious of using blaming words. Stand in the zone of “openness and safety”.

Finally, together as mother and daughter, create how you would like to be in your relationship. Discuss how your mother can still protect you while you have a little more privacy and time with your friends. Communication is the key to every successful relationship.

I want to start by saying that what you are feeling right now is very normal. Last year, you were living in the excitement of traveling abroad and being a university student. The dream back then was to be free from high school and rules.

However, you are now experiencing the reality side of the dream. This is the place where the “reality” of living abroad in a different country and away from the safety of family and friends is settling in for you. The reality of school responsibilities is also not what you probably expected it to be. I want you to remember that you are not alone in feeling this way. All students experience these insecurities during the transition stage and, to be honest, these feelings are expected. However, it is important that you give yourself some time to adjust to all of the changes; there have been many changes. The theory behind change is quite simple, but very comforting when we are aware of it. As a high school student, you were what we call a “leaper”. A “leaper” is described as someone who is enthusiastic about change, nothing frightens them because the excitement is overwhelming. The stage you are describing to me now is one called the “tradition holder”. This is the stage where feelings such as missing family, friends and the lighter workload from high school is experienced.

My suggestions for you are;1. Stay in contact with friends and family from Abu Dhabi. Connecting with them will give you the comfort and support that you are longing for.2. Get a mentor. Everyone should have one. A mentor is someone you look up to. Choose a student or friend who has experienced the changes that you are going through. Your mentor can give you some great advice and tips about university life and living away from home.3. Connect with your professors. They understand the challenges that new students have, particularly those who have moved from abroad. Meeting with the professors one-on-one will give you a chance to ask for help and get the support that you need with your new workload.

I have a very good friend that works out all the time and looks very fit, but he talks about himself too much, to a point where my other friends never want him to hang out with us. He is very nice and I feel bad listening to them talking like that about him, but it is very annoying how much he loveshimself. Should I tell him what they say so he can stop?

I can tell how concerned you are for your friend and how much you care about the friendship. A couple of things came to mind as I read your letter. Firstly, I do not recommend squealing on your other friends, because that will create toxic behavior and possibly even destroy the friendship, as well as the rapport that they have with you. What I do suggest is that you sit down with your very good friend and talk to him. I recommend that you begin by acknowledging his commitment and drive to working out. You can even compliment him on his looking good. Next, ask him why he talks about himself so much with you and the other friends. Explain how everyone is pleased with his level of fitness, but that they are challenged with how much he is talking about it. Give him some time to reflect on what you are saying. He may not even realise how his boasting is affecting the group. Remember to encourage him to share his success but to keep in mind the feelings of the group as well.

MeThoD:Grind the biscuits and add your melted butter, then stir until clumpy. Remove your apple cores and slice each into 8 pieces.

Place water in a pot and boil, and then add sugar. Stir until dissolved and then add apples. Let them soak and simmer.Grease pan with butter, then use biscuit mix to make base. Compact the mix tightly around the edges, roughly 1 cm thick, then place apples in mold.Add a cup of your syrup from the pot onto the apples and use the rest of biscuit mix to cover the apples.Bake for 30 min at 350° F (175° C). After baked, squeeze orange on top and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Food allergies and intolerances are on the rise around the world and, as of yet, experts don’t know why this is. Nutritionists are often asked for information on allergy-free foods and dietary regimes to help people eat well. Allergy friendly foods are much easier to find in mainstream supermarkets these days. Some people are sensitive to particular foods like nuts, shellfish and cereals and, in some cases, even a tiny amount can prove disastrous. Although referred to as an allergy, a food intolerance occurs through a different biological mechanism, and while symptoms can appear the same, the difference needs to be identified for effective treatment.

Hay fever is a common allergy, often considered a nuisance rather than a major disease, and most people self treat it with over-the-counter remedies. Bee stings, pollen, cats, dust mites and food allergens act in the same way to provoke the body’s immune system producing antibodies to usually safe but specific food proteins. A reaction occurs within minutes and can include the swelling of lips and throat, breathing problems, stomach upsets, skin

rashes and anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. The most notable foods to cause some people to react are:

•Eggs•Milk, including casein, lactaglobulin and alphalactalbumin•Soy•Fish•Peanuts and tree nuts•Sesame•Gluten•Molluscs•Prawns•Some fruits such as strawberries, citrus, tomatoes, mushrooms•Food additives such as benzoates and salicylates•MSG (monosodium glutamate) and sulphite derivitives.

Unlike allergies, food intolerances are not caused by the immune system, but by a reaction in the digestive tract in response to a chemical. Because of this, they can be difficult to treat and identify. Food intolerances tend to be less severe than food allergies, and often an adverse food can be eaten in small amounts with no ill effect. Lactose intolerance is a familiar example; many people with lactose intolerance find they can eat one serving of dairy products every other day or so with no discomfort. Food intolerances, unlike allergies, do not always react to a one-off dose, and a reaction can occur within hours or days, making it hard to identify the culprit. The foods that tend to cause intolerance reactions in sensitive people include:

•Dairy products, including milk, cheese and yoghurt •Chocolate •Eggs, particularly egg white

•Flavour enhancers such as MSG•Food additives •Strawberries, citrus fruits and tomatoes •Wine, particularly red wine •Histamine and other amines in some foods.

Intolerances are discernable by a wide variety of symptoms, many affecting the digestive tract, though some may cause fatigue, headaches, and “brain fog”. Intolerances, however, do not cause hives, swelling of the throat or mouth, itchiness, nasal conjestion, wheezing and itchy eyes.

Diagnosis can be made by taking a history of the patient and family, but symptoms can vary. The most definitive test for a food allergy is the “skin prick” test or the RAST blood test, which looks for raised IgE antibodies in the blood. This is very good for diagnosing allergies to milk, eggs, wheat, peanuts, nuts, seafood and soy, but not so good at diagnosing fruit and vegetable allergies. One positive test on its own is not proof of an allergy, but a negative one pretty much rules out an allergy.

Diagnosing intolerance is not so easy, and the test may indicate a food intolerance but cross reactivity can be contradictory to what your body is actually reacting to. Depending on what advice your GP has given you, you might be better off with a nutritionist. Undertake a rotation diet to identify mild intolerance or follow a more restrictive elimination diet, which must be supervised to avoid malnutrition over a two to four-month period. This will help to pin down whether food intolerance or your stressful lifestyle is the cause for your problem.

Although nutrition is a very important part of maintaining health, it is not the only answer to health problems.
