Our girls’ PSSA softball team recently earned the title of Hunter Champions for the third consecutive year. What an achievement for our little school! They will play a team from a yonder region of NSW next. The boys’ soccer and girls’ netball teams are now into Round 5 and 4 respectively. Congratulations to all of these students, and those who make these opportunities possible. Congratulations, too, to all of our senior students who led their K-6 Peer Support groups through weekly learning activities around the theme of Keeping Friends this term. This role can push some students out of their ‘comfort zone’ in developing personal communication and leadership skills. We are so proud of all of our group leaders. Everyone did a really fantastic job. Next term, all students in Years 1-6 will commence their participation in the annual HPPS Public Speaking program. This builds on the program’s success over the past two years, which has seen significant and impressive improvement in the confidence and skill development of all students in all years. The end of this term has also coincided with the commencement of major roof replacement works at HPPS. Many of you will have noticed the short term alternate pedestrian access at the front of the school this week. These roofing works will continue, at least, for most of Term 3. Work in the holidays will tackle shared spaces such as the COLA and covered walkways. Next term, some classes will be displaced temporarily to the library or the hall while their rooms are worked on. The changed circumstances regarding the use of classrooms, the library and hall will impact somewhat on regular school events next term. There will be no weekly (Monday) class assemblies, although combined assemblies will continue. Teachers will present their weekly white and orange two-point awards, as usual, at a daily recess assembly. The delivery of weekly music and library programs will also be affected. Although inconvenient, these works are necessary and transitory. I’m sure we will all band together to support those affected at any time. I will do my best to keep everyone updated on upcoming plans. However, please be mindful that plans can change for many reasons, including the weather! On a final note, I would like to advise that the current staffing arrangements at our school will be unchanged next term, as Mr Peter Johnson continues to relieve as principal at Tuncurry Public School. Best wishes to you for a lovely winter break. We look forward to seeing all students back on Tuesday 23 July, 2019. She talked about how she got interested in tennis, and her first racquet was made out of an apple carton and made into a paddle. She used to practice on the wall. The students also had the opportunity to get a scholarship. There were students from other schools in the area, and we got to team up with them for some coaching. They taught us how to volley, forearm, backarm and smash. We all had a fun day, and it helped us learn more about tennis. Written by ATSI student, Jordan Bendeich and Angus Goolagong

In PBL lessons the past fortnight, students have continued with their learning about our ‘learning dispositions’. They have had the opportunity to explore what it means to be reflective and self-motivated. Students discussed the importance of seeking feedback and learning from mistakes. They practised self-motivation as a group in games that required them to work together for a common goal. The last of our lessons on the ‘learning dispositions’ is happening this week. Students will discover what ‘The Learning Pit’ means, and why it is valuable to take on challenges, give them a go, bounce back from mistakes and use the toolkit of positive statements to have positive learning dispositions and be a responsible learner. The lesson features a video starring our very own students demonstrating the language responsible learners’ use as they journey through the Learning Pit. You can view all of our learning disposition posters on our website at https://hallidays‐p.schools.nsw.gov.au/positive‐ behaviour‐for‐learning‐/learner‐disposition‐and‐the‐ learning‐pit.html

DONATIONS MAKE OUR SCHOOL GARDEN FABULOUS!

Our school garden has been very lucky to receive donations from the following people:- Thank you to Bunnings Warehouse Taree for our amazing fruit trees Orange, Lemon,Mandarin, Pomegranate and Olive. The students have now planted the trees and are caring for them. Bunnings also donated sugar cane mulch and seeds. A big, big Thank you goes out to Mick Cain who has volunteered his time to come into our garden over the last semester and rebuild the compost area, dig holes to plant our fruit trees, add compost buckets to our vegetable gardens and general garden duties. Thank you to Adrian and Sam Maligin for the donation of the Mango Tree. We will soon be planting this in our fruit orchard area. With these generous donations our school garden can thrive and students can be involved in the creation of this garden. Ms.J.McConnachie

STAGE 2 GREAT AUSSIE BUSH CAMP STORIES In Week 8, Stage 2 students attended the Great Aussie Bush Camp. Students conquered fears on the giant swing and high ropes. They showed teamwork in canoeing and persistence in archery. Photos are now available to view on the school’s website gallery. Students from 3/4P wrote of their experiences:

Giant Swing I was getting tied up for the giant swing. My class mates pulled the black rope down below and I felt myself going up. I looked down, but wished I hadn't.

The people down below looked like ants. Finally I got to the top. I looked down at our instructor, Kit Kat. She nodded, and I pulled the red release rope. Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh! My lips went numb, and I could not scream - Lou Klaphake Archery At camp I did archery and I was nervous. I got a bullseye!I felt amazed, then I was confident. I did a dab because I was excited - Jaxsyn Seymour Dual Flying Fox Slowly I climbed the mountain of stairs, hoping when I got to the top, I'd jump. I'd promised myself I'd go on the dual flying fox but I really didn't want to. Ruby was my partner and she jumped first. I burst into tears knowing I couldn't do it. I ran as fast as I could down the stairs and sat on the seats. I realised I actually could do it. When Ruby came back, I promised her I would jump this time - it would be super fun. Once again I climbed the stairs, got to the top and jumped! It was amazing! I loved it and after that I love heights - Matilda Sladek

TOUCH FOOTBALL

On Friday, 21st June our boys' and girls' touch footy teams travelled to Old Bar to play in round 1 of the PSSA state knockout. Unfortunately Old Bar had the stronger team and the girls won the game 5 to 1. I was extremely proud of how hard our girls tried the whole match. They displayed a wonderful, never say die attitude, plus great sportsmanship. Well done girls. A big thank you to Mr Voorby for coaching the girls this year. Thankyou also to Mel Nunn for giving the girls a good ‘skills’ warm up pre-game.

The boys had an even harder battle against a team with quite a few footy players. Once again they showed a great attitude of trying till the very end. Old Bar were the victors however, with a final score of 8 to 0. Thank you to the parents who trained the boys this year, Karinda Bush for all your sessions, her husband Mat and also Mat Cougle and Mr Crozier. There's always next year!

SOFTBALL

Last Friday our girls' softballers played their round 4 match against Valentine Public School at our school. It was a perfect day for a huge battle that went to the last innings. Fortunately our girls got off to a better start, batting strongly in the first two innings to achieve a total of 9 runs to Valentine's 2, but then it flipped around with our girls struggling to get home. Thanks to consistent pitching by Maya Ljumanovic and catching by Charlie Keyte. Summer Brown at 1st base had safe hands and there was a wonderful catch at 3rd base by Bridie Steber. All the girls batted wisely, much improved from their previous matches. At the end of the game the girls were ecstatic to hear that they had won 12 to 8. They are now HUNTER champions!!! Next round is the quarter finals against the North Coast region winner. Keep up the practising girls and good luck! Thank you as always to Trevor Blanning for umpiring and assisting with the coaching and to Warwick for scoring.

Back row Trevor, Ramona, Charlie. Carly Elka Summer Daisy Mrs Channell, Warwick. Front row - Miley, Bridie, Matilda (injured), Stevie, Maya, Jesse (absent)
