English

This week we are going to be focussing on writing and performing a fun sports commentary – the emphasis

being on the fun! Before we start, watch this Loom video of Mr Tickell, so you can see where we are

heading. https://www.loom.com/share/fe05d0a4e1bf4e8da2c7d4642aaa73d3 (Password: 5BTi)

Lesson 1

LO: To understand and use features used in a sports commentary.

Have a go at:

Watch the series of short videos below which give examples of sports commentary in different

scenarios:

Cricket - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB2ed85xdgA

Gymnastics - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtiDMdfoUBg

…and everyday circumstances…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2BZNowCXws

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arPtY5TlPE0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26FIEX6muAo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60lJ0ipleSI&list=PLfpvU0QtyhV-DT_uRxg4mWzNuT6Dxx-Pj

Next, look at the list of features below which you might find in sports commentary videos. If you

are uncertain of any of the features, conduct research to reassure yourself:

Rhetorical questions Hyperbole / Exaggeration

Metaphor Opinion

Facts (Who, what, why, where, when) Description

Intonation Questions

Emotion Simile

7

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

Re-watch the videos and try to identify example of each of key features. Try to find at least one example of each feature.

8

Lesson 2

LO: To identify features used in a sports commentary.

Martin Tyler - Football

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

Watch Mr Tickell’s example video (Password 5BTi):

https://www.loom.com/share/668afa42c501457abfd914da61cf2f27

Then, watch the video of Martin Tyler’s commentary and make notes (using the sheet provided)

identifying the key features in his commentary:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf5g7z9tF3M

Re-watch the videos and try to identify one example of each of key features. Then, re write it in a way that you might have commentated. e.g. Metaphor – He’s Captain Marvel! -> He’s Captain Britain! Simile- He has a foot like a traction engine -> He has a foot like a steam train.

9

Lesson 3

LO: To identify an appropriate sports event and plan out key events and language to use.

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

Watch Mr Tickell’s example video.

You will need to identify a video of a sporting event or an everyday event that you want to

commentate on. It could be a home-made video or a video from Youtube.

Next, look over your notes from yesterday. What features were used most? What features would

you like to use?

Then, you will begin to plan your commentary over the video, just using brief notes. It could be

serious, or it could be funny as you like.

Watch this video – what you should not do in your commentary!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McdjBaChdBA

Look at the list of features in Lesson 1 (below). Rhetorical questions Hyperbole / Exaggeration

Metaphor Opinion

Facts (Who, what, why, where, when) Description

Intonation Questions

Emotion Simile

Try to include all of the features listed in your plan!

11

Lesson 3 – Sheet for notes

Time Bullet Points

12

Lesson 4

LO: To write a script for your sports commentary

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

Watch Mr Tickell’s example video.

Take your notes of your commentary that you prepared yesterday and edit them to include key

features, facts and vocabulary. For example you may take the note:

0:00 Intro

and turn it into:

0:00 Good evening. Welcome to tonight’s Barclays’ Premier League game – Sheffield United

against Newcastle United at Bramall Lane.

When writing, try to include as many grammatical features as possible.

e.g. Early on in the game, Londstrom on the attack for Sheffield United, quick flick in but no

control in the box. It falls to Stevens for Sheffield Utd, who sets off a rocket of a shot, but

Dubravka pulls off an outstanding save.

Work through your script and underline in different colours, the different features you have used. Create a key to work with it.

13

Lesson 5

LO: To rehearse and perform your sports commentary

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

Spend some time practising your commentary. Just like drama lessons, practise and rehearsal

gives a better performance. Think about your speed, intonation and volume as you speak.

It may be that you want to record your performance straight to your i-pad or phone. In which

case, it may look like this:

Cricket - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB2ed85xdgA

Alternatively, you may wish to use Loom, a recording app on your phone or computer to record it.

If so, here is an example of Mr Tickell working through the video recording.

https://www.loom.com/share/6d5a32161ee24e668fb60e190e1349a3

Work through your script and underline in different colours, the different features you have used. Create a key to work with it.
