TheMelbournePressClubiscallingfornominationstotheVictorianMediaHallofFame,withthefirst
inducteestobenamedbeforetheendofthisyear.
TheHallofFamewillrecognisepeoplewhohavemadesignificantcontributionstothecraftof
journalismandenhancedthehistoryofthenewsmediainVictoria.Nomineesmusthaveastrong
connectiontoVictoria.
ThePressClubhasappointedanadvisorypaneltomakerecommendationstotheclubcommittee.
ThepanelmembersareMelbourneUniversityProfessorGeoffreyBlainey,formernewspapereditor
andauthor/historianHarryGordonandformerAgeeditorMichaelSmith,alifememberofthePress
Club.
PressClubmembersandothersareinvitedtonominateindividuals,givingreasonswhytheyshould
berecognisedasaHallofFamer.Theadvisorypanelisparticularlyinterestedinnominationsof
peoplefromthe19th
andearly20th
centuryintheinitialstagesoftheproject.Submissionsshouldbe

initiativeoftheclubandconsistentwiththeclubsmissiontorecogniseexcellenceinVictorian
journalism.
ThehistoryofVictorianjournalismisagreatstory.ThroughtheHallofFame,theclubhopestotell
importantpartsofarich175-yearhistoryofjournalisticachievement,hesaid.
Atatimewhentheprofessionischangingsoquicklyandwhenitisunderscrutinyfromsomany
quarters,itisimportanttosometimesreflectonhowjournalismhascreatedpublicbenefitinthis
State.Victoriahashadsometrulygreatpublishers,reporters,writers,photographersandcartoonists;
theirdeedsshouldbehonouredinhistoricalcontext.
GroupsofjournalistswillbeinductedintotheHallofFameonceayearforthreeorfouryears.Itis
thenplannedtoopenapermanentdisplay.
