support and goes above and beyond to support them in their personal success. Mallory started at Black Hills Works 11 years ago as a DSP in residential. She became a lead resi-dential, then a service coordinator and was eventually promoted to community living supervisor. Currently, she serves as the director of intensive services. Her su-pervisor, Michelle Aman, says Mallory excels in each position she holds and strives to improve treatment services wherever she works. “Mallory is a natural leader,” says Michelle. “She is confident in her deci-sion making. She works at continual improvement, and she is not intimidated by tough situations. Judy started as a secretary at Black Hills Works in 1998. Later that year, she became the office man-ager on the federal contracts and in 2000, she was hired as staff accountant/financial assistant to manage our flex plan and to work with person-served finances and residential. She handles over 300 person-served trust accounts that result in over $250,000 monthly in trust checks and maintains the files for 20 residential homes. She also processes all BH Services accounts payable for federal contracts. Her supervisor, Connie Hansen, describes her as an “I’ll do it sort of person.” “Anytime something new is being handed down, Judy is the first person we can count on to step up to the plate,” says Connie.

On Monday, December 11, Special Olympians from the Flame youth team and our own Storm team tested the new floor in the Black Hills Works gymnasium. They were joined by Sturgis Buffalo Chip® President Rod Woodruff who pledged $100,000 raised from his signature Legends Ride® celebrity charity event to-ward the renovation of the gym in order to make it the permanent training facility for both Special Olympic teams. Black Hills Works offered to share our gym with the youth, but the building was in need of major updating. The funds pledged by the Buffalo Chip’s Legends Ride will allow BHW athletes to use the renovated gym on a daily basis, while giving priority scheduling to the Special Olympics teams for training. The Legends Ride charity event brings to-gether rides from around the country as well as VIPs from the world of motorcycling and entertainment. One hundred percent of Legends Riders contributions benefit charity. The 11th Legends Ride® will take place on Monday, August. 6, 2018.

Kelly Hotovec says that when she started at BHWI a year ago Asay Spotted Eagle didn’t participate in group activities. “He spent a greater portion of the day sitting on the couch or in a quiet hallway watch-ing videos. He helped with things when asked to, but for the most part was very quiet and kept to himself. When you could get him to talk he was funny and kind. And I often thought he could do so much more.” Everything changed for Asay with his new job at the Landfill. Job Coach Pam Junek says, “I have had the privilege of watching this young man grow, not only at his first community job, but when I have vis-ited him at his home, his whole attitude has changed. Now he has gotten the confidence to start wanting to be more independent. Asay’s first day of community employment at the landfill was August 17. His main job is recycling plastics and cardboard, but his supervisors have given him additional jobs within the facility and have told Pam how impressed they are that Asay looks for tasks to make the Landfill cleaner. Asay came to BHWI in September of 2009 where he tried a variety of in-house jobs. After taking classes through Career Pathways and exploring several potential opportunities in the community, Asay told Pam he wanted to work with trash and that is how the job search began. Pam set up a visit and toured the Recycle Center at the Landfill. During his situational evaluation, he discovered he enjoyed sorting through bottles and tossing pop and water bottles into the bin.

New job changes everything He celebrated 90 days on November 17. His supervisors and co-workers say he is doing really well. His challenge in the beginning was interacting with his co-workers, He preferred to sit by himself during breaks. His supervisors now say he has really opened up and “is one of the guys.” Kelly says when she saw him recently, Asay told her the two best things about his job are the pay check and that he is losing weight doing it. “He was like a social butterfly, outgoing, happy and sharing his story with everyone! He found his voice! My heart melted! I could not be more proud!” (Thank you Kelly Hotovec for sharing this story.)

What’s your why? This monthly feature gives employees an opportunity to explain what they find most fulfilling in their jobs. This month, we hear from Brad Winter, director at the Suzie Cappa Art Center & Gallery. If you would like to share your “why,” email it to [email protected].

I remember my interview for BHW in February 1996. There were five supervisors looking for employees to start the new Sensory Development program. The first nine employees were hired for the Day Services area under Tammie Quinn. Out of the nine people, I am the only one left working for BHW 21 years later. I never considered this just a job, it was my career! I am very much a people person and enjoy helping others. It was an amazing journey to work with the people that came from the Custer Developmental Center, helping them experience new things in life, like taking them to the lake, picnics, paddle boating, going to a cave and many more. I remember a friend of mine telling me that he wanted to apply for a job at BHW, because he wanted a job like mine, where he could make a differ-ence in peoples lives. I’ve been able to grow and create an amazing program, which is now the Suzie Cappa Art Center. In the beginning stages, it was more about Art Expression and Enjoyment; we didn’t sell art. With the amazing support of my supervisor, Tammie Quinn and many other staff and volunteers, a new downtown location was purchased and remodeled into an amazing home for 25 Artists with all abilities. I’m so proud of all of the artists and staff that have come on this journey with me! It definitely has been a team effort! Selling artwork all over the world and watching the artists grow to be so independent has been incredible. Sometimes it takes staff from other

agencies or guests that visit the Art Center, to remind me just how far we have come and that we need to be very proud, as an agency, that we have this unique space in Rapid City, South Dakota. So still to this day, 21 years later, I love my job and am excited to see where the pieces of art are sold each week. I’m so proud of the artists at Suzie Cappa Art Center and the accomplishments they have made! Black Hills Works is a great company to work for! I have always had great support from coworkers and my management team. I’ve always said, “If I’m having a bad day, I just need to go to work” All of the people served definitely give you the energy and self esteem to keep moving forward through life! I wouldn’t have it any other way! That’s WHY I come to work!

Persistence pays offAt the frontline leader gal-lery walk on December 8, Erin Aukes’ presentation on the Supporting Health and Wellness competency demonstrated, among other things, persistence and try-ing new things can make a big difference. Rodney Keffeler is a very social person who loves to be active. Daily physical therapy and exer-cise help him maintain the muscle strength he needs to walk and do his daily trans-fers. But Erin says Rodney was struggling with walk-ing with his walker. He no longer felt safe and was afraid he was going to fall. Staff submitted a technol-ogy request for a Gait Trainer, a wheeled device that assists a person who is unable to walk independently to learn or relearn to walk safely. The technology de-partment was able to get one donated. But Erin said Rodney didn’t feel comfort-able or confident with it. After some problem solv-ing, Rodney’s team switched the gait trainer so that the handles were in front. This provided Rodney more independence plus safety and security. All this hard work that Rodney and his supporters have done help ensure he can continue to participate in the community and adds purpose and meaning to his life.

Community living skills and supportsAt the Frontline Leader/DSP Gallery Walk on De-cember 8, Jennifer Peterson’s presentation was on community living skills and supports. She focused on Brenda Schmitt and how they worked together to fill Brenda’s free time. “Getting to know Brenda was part of the adventure for both of us. Learning that Brenda loves animals and enjoys acting, a plan was hatched,” said Jennifer. After a little research, they learned that the Humane Society was looking for volunteers. Brenda signed up for volunteer classes. While the Humane Society was very welcoming, Brenda was still not sure about going by herself so Jennifer volunteered with her. Flutter Productions was holding auditions and Brenda was selected for the cast of Journeys. Jennifer says Brenda spent many hours learning her part and she enjoyed going to every practice. Jennifer says as time goes on, Brenda’s need for her support has faded including during her volun-teer time at the Humane Society.

Coming soon to the Suzie Cappa Art Center

These pieces and more are currently on display at the Hozhoni Art Gallery in Flagstaff, Arizona. A new gym floor requires new shoesThe installation of a new, hardwood gym floor is a wonderful boost for all people who participate in ac-tivities, but the new floor comes with an entirely new set of responsibilities to keep it in good condition. If you support anyone who will be participating in activities on the new floor, that person will be allowed ONLY rubber soled shoes (no boots, heels, etc.). And those should be “indoor only” shoes that are reserved for ONLY gym usage. Essentially, anyone partici-pating on the gym floor must obtain a new pair of “gym-only” shoes. The good news: Clearly, this may be a fi-nancial hardship for some of the people we support. But Joe Burmeister has contacted the Kiwanis Club, which has a mission of providing shoes for school-age children in need, and asked them if they would expand their mission to supply shoes for people served by Black Hills Works. Do you support someone who meet any of the following criteria: •They participate in Special Olympics activi-ties in the gym. •They attend day services at the main Learn-ing Institute on Range Road, meaning that the person might participate in gym activities during the day? •Buying shoes would present a financial hard-ship for them. If so, send their names to Joe Burmeister by Monday, January 8. The Kiwanis club is planning a

Black Hills Works Shopping Day at Payless Shoes. Joe is working with them to coordinate a day and time for their representatives to meet us at the store and people will be properly fitted for appropriate shoes. Any questions, please call me at 593-2481.

Making contact with sign languageDSP Jin Washington shared the following story on Facebook: Today I had a breakthrough at work. This girl could only communicate with sign languages. I started to learn a couple of words here and there, but I couldn’t really talk to her. Today she was really upset because she couldn’t get hold of her mom. I tried to calm her down but could feel her anxiety. So I guided her to sit next to me while I googled sign language. I saw the former search “I love you” in the drop down list, so I clicked on it. Then found that it was what I already knew, the sign for LOVE. So I signed to her. I was amazed to see her expression instantly relax. She put one hand over my free hand. We held hands like that for a while, then I needed to use the bathroom. I was nervous at first because I didn’t think I could sign the long sentence. But I decided to search for “I have to go to the bathroom” with my other hand. It’s much simpler than I thought. So I signed it to her. She let go of my hand right away without any struggle. It was such an amazing experience!

Construction update/Foundation WorksPainting continues at Black Gap and flooring is on the agenda for January in some of the rooms in Hamp-ton and Parkview, according to Doug Meiron. Some rooms at Sitka are also receiving new flooring, due to the South Dakota Housing Opportunity Grant the Black Hills Works Foundation received recently. The last non-Black Hills Works resident at West Omaha has moved out so it is being readied for new residents. And maintenance has been getting the old Career Pathways location at 514 Mt. Rushmore Road ready for Foundation staff.
