Questionnaire Response No. 1 Detail your professional achievements

Peter Cancro Jersey Mike’s

Subs

Peter Cancro is founder and CEO of Jersey Mike’s Subs. In 1972, Peter was a high school student in Point Pleasant. He began working at the local sandwich shop, Mike's Subs, at the age of 14. He loved the authentic submarine sandwiches. But even more, he loved working behind the counter, interacting with his customers. He took pride in knowing their names and what they ordered. When Peter was a senior in high school, he overheard the owner of Mike's Subs discussing selling the business. At the age of 17 — before he was legally able to slice a sub — Peter decided to buy the shop. He asked his football coach, who also happened to be a banker, to help him out and, that coach came through and backed his loan.

Today, Jersey Mike’s is a sub sandwich franchise with more than 750 stores open and under development nationwide. Started at the Jersey Shore in 1956, Jersey Mike's continued its steady growth in 2012 opening 92 new restaurants throughout the country, a 33 percent increase in new store growth over 2011. In March 2013, Jersey Mike’s was #3 on Technomic Inc.’s list of the Ten Fastest-Growing Chains with Sales Over $200 Million. Additionally, the company was named one of the Top 5 Growth Chains in the 2012 Nation’s Restaurant News Second 100 ranking, listed as #1 in growth in U.S. Systemwide Sales (sandwich segment). Jersey Mike’s wins best sub awards in virtually every market it enters.

Franchising, Inc.)

I have 18 years of franchising experience spanning all facets of franchising from Franchisor Founder/CEO of two franchise systems, Master Franchisee of two states, Franchisee of a dozen franchises, Franchise Consultant to franchisors and as a Franchise Broker. I am the founder and ex-CEO/President of Comfort Keepers. I founded this company in 1998 and started franchising it in 1999. In less than eight years, I grew the company to nearly 700 locations in 48 states and eight countries with annual revenues in excess of $300 million. I handled all candidate calls, every discovery day and a large portion of the initial training and on-going support. (Since I sold the system, it is now over 750 locations an $350 million annually.) I've also been a multi-unit franchisee of six franchise brands with a total of twelve franchised locations as well as an equity owner of Master Franchisee of two states. I spent five years as a franchise broker and three years as a franchise consultant to franchisors. I just recently founded a new franchise, Top Ten Percent. In approximately six months we have opened 10 new territories with another 12 under development. I was also bestowed the honor of Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year 2004 and inducted into the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.

Tariq Farid Edible

Arrangements

Growing up as an immigrant to the U.S. from Pakistan, I watched as my father worked three jobs to support our family. By my mid-teens, I had been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and while still in high school opened a flower shop. With my younger brother and family members helping out in the store as needed, my one flower shop bloomed into four. In the process, I realized that the existing software didn’t meet my needs, and created a customized program to organize delivery and other aspects of the business. The software worked so well that I began selling it throughout the floral industry and created a computer company. The company has since evolved into Netsolace, Inc., which now sells software to franchise companies. My next entrepreneurial effort would change my world and the gift industry forever. It was an inventive take on my flower bouquets made of carefully sculpted fresh-fruit. With my younger brother as my business partner, I launched Edible Arrangements from an East Haven, Conn., storefront in 1999. Two years later we opened our first franchise location. Today the company has close to 1,200 franchise locations in 14 countries.

Michael & Marian Ilitch

Little Caesars

Michael and Marian Ilitch, the founders of Little Caesars, dreamed big, took risks and grew one pizza shop in Garden City, Michigan into an international pizza chain. They invested their life savings toward opening a single Little Caesars pizza shop in 1959. To grow the chain, Mike and Marian franchised their stores. That decision, and the growth of Little Caesars as a global franchise has provided business opportunities for many individual franchisees to operate their own family businesses, while at the same time providing employment opportunities for many thousands of individuals both in stores and the corporate office. The rapid growth of the company continues today. In fact, Little Caesars is the world’s fastest growing pizza chain in the U.S, the largest carryout-only pizza chain in the world, and an internationally known brand, with locations in all 50 states and 18 countries and territories worldwide.

Little Caesars success has been fueled by innovation, even from day one. When they opened their doors in 1959, people thought a carry out restaurant without tables and chairs would fail, but Mike and Marian’s innovative idea paid off. Since then, Little Caesars has a long history of industry first and innovation including pioneering a two-for-one pizza deal later known as Pizza!Pizza!® Mr. Ilitch developed a conveyor oven specially designed to bake pizza quickly and consistently to keep up with customer demand. He created unique products like Crazy Bread®, which became a standard accompaniment to pizza and was mimicked by other pizza chains. Little Caesars also broke the status quo in introducing the revolutionary $5 HOT-N-READY concept, making pizzas ready when customers walk in, with no need to call ahead or wait in line. More recently, Little Caesars was also the first national chain to introduce Detroit-style deep dish pizza (DEEP!DEEP! Dish), a pretzel crust pizza, and a bacon wrapped pizza to its menu nationwide.

The success of Little Caesars allowed Mike and Marian to own other successful businesses in the food, sports and entertainment industries, including the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, Fox Theatre, Olympia Entertainment, Olympia Development, Blue Line Foodservice Distribution, Champion Foods, Ilitch Holdings, Inc., Little Caesars Pizza Kit Fundraising Program, and a variety of venues within these entities.

I have spent the 3 decades in franchising. I have worked for Ziebart for 11 Years, rising from an entry level position to the executive committee, responsible for World Wide Development and two of the first automotive co-brand developments in existence. I’ve held the position of CEO at Molly Maid and Mr. Handyman simultaneously. The latter of which I started from the first franchisee. I’ve co-founded my own companies under my “AFS” umbrella and purchased and developed AutoQual and Drive N Style which I developed into national brands and then sold to Driven Brands and Ken Walker. I co-founded Dryer Vent Wizard, starting with the first franchisee and sold it to my partners in December after serving as the only CEO for 8 years. I also purchased Zoup of North America, HandyPro International and more than doubled their size before selling them back to their founders. I purchased Rooster’s Mens Grooming Centers and

Questionnaire Response No. 2 How have these achievements advanced the principles of franchising as a viable business strategy, and its positive visibility?

Peter Cancro Jersey Mike’s

Subs

Jersey Mike’s was founded in 1956 as Mike’s Subs at a time when there were very few franchise restaurants or hamburger, pizza, chicken or taco chains. In fact, the submarine sandwich was a relatively new item in American society at that time. Back then, proprietors or mom-and-pop businesses would open their stores in basic storefront locations. To survive and thrive, they had to offer exceptional quality products, coupled with unparalleled service. This was paramount for Peter and became the platform for future growth.

For years after Peter bought Mike’s, he watched customers come in at the end of the summer to get several giant subs wrapped for travel to carry back to their homes across the country. He saw the opportunity to expand the Jersey Mike’s experience and, in 1987, Peter began franchising. He changed the name from Mike's Subs to Jersey Mike's Subs to capture the authenticity of original store.

This model has served Jersey Mike’s well and has allowed the company to steadily replicate its success nationwide by finding exceptional operators who believe in Peter’s mission to bring customers the highest quality, freshest made sub in the industry and give back to their local community.

I have been fortunate to have had many successes in franchising and I believe even more fortunate to have seen franchising from nearly all perspectives. Due to my diverse experience and success in franchising, I've become a credible source to both new businesses wanting to franchise their operation and to the ten's of thousands of candidates I've had the pleasure of being able to consult with on the many benefits of franchise ownership. I've personally introduced and assisted well over a thousand individuals into franchise ownership who have created ten's of thousands of jobs and several billion dollars in revenues while dramatically improving their earning potential and lifestyle.

Edible Arrangements

The global growth of Edible Arrangements through franchising and the success of our franchisees are shining examples of the strength of the franchise business model both as a tool for expansion for the franchisor and a pathway to business ownership for the franchisees. As a result of our success and the popularity of our product, we and our franchisees are frequently sought out by the news media, organizers of industry events and other high-visibility venues to tell our story. In every case, we take full advantage of these opportunities to promote franchising and the role it has played in our growth and will play in the future. As an example, in April I spoke about our growth through franchising to business leaders from around the world at the Retail & Consumer Goods Executive Summit hosted by the Wharton School of

Business. This October, I will be a speaker at GE Capital’s 4th Annual Middle Market Summit where 1,100 business leaders, policy makers, academics and the media will discuss issues of importance to the “middle market”.

Russ Frith

Former CEO, Lawn Doctor

During my career I have always maintained a philosophy that franchisees are my business partners and that any franchise system could only grow if both parties could benefit from corporate decisions. This approach allowed both franchisees and franchisor to focus on growing the revenue stream verses how to divide it. As a result the franchisees in our system promoted franchising as a viable means to achieve personal success.

John Galardi

Galardi Group Inc.

John (like many entrepreneurs) was never satisfied with just one or two locations. He realized that the best way to grow his chain was through franchising. Between 1961 when he officially opened his first location in Southern California until 1971 the chain saw tremendous growth to almost 400 locations within the decade. The franchise model assisted in this growth spurt and with his proven business model for serving up delicious Hot Dogs at value pricing, did the chain take off as it did!

Cynthia Gartman

Many if not all of these accomplishments are direct expressions of my appreciation of the franchising model and the opportunities it creates for enterprising individuals to get involved in a business of their own while having the support, systems and expertise of a “partner” in their operations who continually strives to perfect the business concept being franchised. They are similarly examples of my philosophy that well-developed franchise systems lead to more successful and happy franchisees, which leads to bigger and better franchise systems in a continuing cycle. Along these lines, I am proud of my role in establishing the IFA’s Fran-Guard program. As Chair of the ICFE Board of Governors and Chair of the Fran-Guard Committee, I led a group of expert volunteers in creating an improved compliance program that the IFA could roll out in various venues and through several different mediums. The program launched in 2010. Aimed at presenting a clear and profitable business case for compliance, the program demonstrates that the franchise industry has the ability to self-regulate and does not need outside regulatory forces coming to bear upon it. I moderated sessions at IFA Conventions and Legal Roundtables in the last few years (about 16 presentations in all) and, with the assistance of other presenters, offered the Business Case for compliance to each attendee. We also created a “Train the Provider” process through which IFA members can become Fran-Guard providers and offer this program to more individuals. To date, we have trained more than 400 people from 185 companies.

Liberty Tax Service

Franchising is viable business strategy when it provides opportunity for others to start their own franchise operation, and/or be gainfully employed in a franchise operation. During his tenure in the franchise industry, Hewitt has recruited over 3,000 franchisees while CEO at Liberty Tax and Jackson Hewitt. He’s created thousands more jobs in various departments at corporate headquarters, and in tax offices throughout the United States and Canada. Liberty Tax Service is the only top three tax company to demonstrate overall system growth during the challenging economic climate of 2011. Throughout this decade, Liberty Tax Service has demonstrated significant gains in an industry formerly dominated by tax giant H&R Block, and, during the 21st century, Liberty has grown by more tax returns than both Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block combined.

Little Caesars

Entrepreneurs thrive in the Little Caesars system because our support services focus on franchisee's business. For franchisees and franchise candidates, Little Caesars is rapidly expanding in markets throughout the world, providing an opportunity for independence in a franchise system. In addition, Little Caesars supports its franchisees through strong brand awareness with one of the most recognized brand characters in the country, Little Caesar. Little Caesars Pizza is recognized among the value leaders in the foodservice industry. We pride ourselves on our winning concept and products that uniquely meet customers’ needs and create a strong value proposition. Being a value-based brand has had a positive impact on the company, its franchisees, and customers. For an unprecedented 8th year, Little Caesars has been named the “Best Value in America” among all major quick serve restaurant chains (Sandelman Research Quick Track Awards of Excellence). Little Caesars is constantly listening to our customers to make sure they get the most out of their experience with us. Little Caesars innovative Hot-N-Ready concept has changed the competitive landscape. Customers really love our HOT-N-READY products, which can only be found at Little Caesars Pizza. Many customers don’t want to wait for their meal, so our unique position in the pizza segment gives us an advantage over our competitors. The Hot-N-Ready concept also translates into a simple operating model for our franchisees. Little Caesars long history of innovation extends to franchising. For instance, the chain built stores where pizza was never served before, such as in sports arenas, college dormitories, and military bases – many of these long before the competition.

The growth of Primrose Schools from just four schools in Georgia more than 30 years ago to now more than 280 schools coast-to-coast has only been made possible by strategic focus and application of successful business principles. stakeholders, are what have helped me guide the company to where it is today. I have taken these same business principles and applied them to the Primrose franchising model. With national focus on high-quality early education and care for children, demand for high-quality providers has grown. I believe it is incumbent upon Primrose as the industry leader to respond to this demand by opening more high-quality schools. In turn, I’m confident this can only bring positive visibility to the franchising industry through Primrose Schools’ applied consistent and successful business model.

Never done before in a handy man environment). Other new industry’s with small niche’s like Dry Vent Wizard and Rooster’s Men’s Grooming we proved could be franchised and served as self-employment careers. Most of the companies above were new industries or niche markets in existing industries proving the franchising model many times over. Throughout my career, it has been important to me to consistently donate to various causes to ease the suffering of others. I now do so through my own private charitable foundation, the Tariq Farid Foundation. The Foundation funds numerous initiatives all over the US but particularly in my home state of Connecticut and in the northeastern region of Pakistan, the area from which my family emigrated. In Connecticut, the Tariq Farid Foundation funds both direct relief efforts as well as programs that provide low-income children and adults opportunities for success in the future. Already this year, the Tariq Farid Foundation has committed over $75,000 to fight hunger through direct support to soup kitchens and food pantries across the state of Connecticut. The Foundation also currently funds scholarships and summer employment programs for low-income youth. Throughout 2014, the Foundation will be revamped, updating its mission and putting in place plans to achieve more targeted and sustainable impact in its giving. In the past few years, I have also donated $100,000 to support childhood cancer research at one the top research hospitals in the United States, Yale-New Haven Hospital and $100,000 to Integrated Immigrant and Refugee Services (IRIS), a local non-profit that resettles refugees from around the world (who have come from environments and situations unimaginable to most of us in the United States) in the New Haven, Connecticut area. I have also founded a hospital in honor of my mother, Salma K. Farid, who passed away in 2005. The hospital is located in her hometown of Sahiwal, Pakistan and provides direly needed medical care—for free—for over 30,000 people annually. Leadership on Charitable Giving at Edible Arrangements Under the umbrella of “Edible Cares”, are a group of initiatives that encourage the health, happiness and well-being of all staff at Edible Arrangements, as well as encourage and support franchisees across the US and Canada to become engaged with their local communities and make charitable contributions whenever possible. Edible Arrangements’ franchisees regularly donate fresh fruit to area food banks, organize fundraising events for local schools and support a variety of causes and foundations. Under Edible Cares, I have instituted a program that provides direct and immediate financial relief for franchisee employees experiencing financial hardship. These programs, as all Edible Cares initiatives, are funded by me. Every other month, Edible Arrangements’ corporate office hosts a two-week training session, Edible

University, for new Franchisees, Managers and Corporate employees. The training concludes with a “Live Store Day,” during which the newly trained franchisee staff prepare Edible Arrangements products. Corporate employees bid on the items (dipped fruit, arrangements and beverages) prepared by the newly trained franchisees and staff. All money raised during the Live Store Day Auction is donated to a local charity. Recipients have included the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Master’s Manna (local food bank), St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the American Cancer Society as well as area food pantries and schools. A national initiative of Edible Cares is the US franchise-wide involvement with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Every October, 10 percent of all sales from the Edible Arrangements’ pink-themed Breast Cancer Awareness collection are donated to National Breast Cancer Foundation. Another program supports veterans. Under the Hero’s Welcome program, US veterans who are interested in opening an Edible Arrangements’ franchise are eligible to receive a 33% discount in the franchise fee. In addition to a sizable discount, veterans in this program receive mentoring from existing Edible Arrangements’ franchisees who are also veterans. One success story of this program is Maurice Welton, who notes that, “I cannot begin to describe all the benefits and inspiration I have gained from knowing him. At different points, he has been like a father, a brother, a mentor, an advisor, a coach and, most of all, a friend. He has taught me about business, people and commitment, and having passion for what you believe in – from the gut.” In addition to the Hero’s Welcome program, we have donated over $125,000 the to the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) VetFran program. Finally, we also contributed $75,000 to support the first-ever IFA technology conference in Atlanta as well as the FranSocial and other IFA media/digital communications projects.

Hispanic Services Division and Free ITIN Preparation Liberty Tax Service first offered special in-house and outreach programs for its Spanish-speaking customers and communities in 2004. In June of 2008, Liberty Tax Service kicked off its new Hispanic Initiative program – Una Familia Sin Fronteras [A Family Without Boundaries] that focuses on educational services internally and to the Hispanic community at large. As a result, all students who successfully completed Liberty’s courses can now earn college credits for their efforts through this special alliance. Best of all, Liberty offers the entire curriculum free. We continue to provide free seminars to address questions about ITIN preparation accompanied by free preparation of ITINs by bilingual preparers. Courses and seminars are taught in Spanish (and English as needed), and many qualify for college credits through the University of Phoenix. Franchise owners and their staff across the United States demonstrate their commitment throughout the year to Liberty’s Una Familia Sin Fronteras Hispanic educational initiative by their enthusiastic support and fulfillment of the educational initiatives spearheaded by Liberty’s national Hispanic Programs Team. Our initiative has earned the respect and support of institutions and educational organizations including public school districts, the Mexican government’s Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME, or Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior), and national non-profit organizations. “Liberty has focused on ensuring that we provide special services that are very much needed by our new immigrant communities,” explains John Hewitt, CEO and Founder of Liberty Tax Service. “We believe that information provides options, and options provide empowerment. Our Una Familia Sin Fronteras initiative and Foundation were created specifically to bring these much needed values to our Latino neighbors across the U.S.”

Little Caesars

One of the most significant corporate programs Little Caesars Pizza has funded is an award-winning, nationally recognized program called the Little Caesars Love Kitchen. Established by Little Caesars in 1985, the Little Caesars Love Kitchen is a mobile kitchen on wheels. It has traveled throughout the country for more than 30 years providing meals to more than three million homeless, hungry and displaced families.

Local Little Caesars franchise owners and company regional offices donate all food and labor costs for the Love Kitchen servings. An estimated 50,000 Little Caesars franchise owners and employees have volunteered their time over the years to support the program in their local communities.

In addition to its regular servings at local shelters, the Little Caesars Love Kitchen has also responded to disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes, as well as the site of the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and the 1995 Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush awarded The President's Volunteer Action Award Citation to Little Caesars for its volunteers' contributions to the Love Kitchen. Little Caesars also received a Presidential Citation for Private Sector Initiatives for the Love Kitchen program under the Reagan administration. It has received a certificate of appreciation from the State of Michigan, was recognized by the Detroit City Council for its efforts in the Gulf Coast region and most recently received Congressional Recognition from the Michigan House of Representatives for its 30 years of service to the communities in which it operates. In 2006, Little Caesars introduced the Little Caesars Veterans Program as a way to thank our vets for the service they and their families have given to our country. The program provides franchise business opportunities to qualified, honorably discharged veterans transitioning to civilian life or seeking a career change. Michael and Marian Ilitch began sponsorship of amateur hockey in the 1960s and started sponsoring the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League in 1978. The league was created to increase the level of competitive play and provide more opportunities for metro Detroit youth hockey players. Little Caesars Hockey Program has grown into the nation’s largest amateur youth ice hockey league, and includes the AAA Hockey Club, Travel Hockey and the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League (LCAHL).

The Ilitch family also established a non-profit foundation called Ilitch Charities in 2000. Ilitch Charities invests in our community's future by supporting innovative, collaborative, and measurable programs in the areas of community development, human services, education, and recreation through contributions from the Ilitch companies, their colleagues, and the generosity of others.

My wife, Karen, and I founded the Ms. Molly Foundation in 1996 after discovering that many of our Molly Maid franchisee employees were calling in sick as a result of being abused by their husbands or boyfriends. We decided to identify a cause that franchisees, employees, customers and home office staff could all support. We founded Ms. Molly Foundation (501(c) 3 non-profit charity) in 1996. The Foundation funds domestic violence shelters across the country and works to eliminate domestic violence through public education and awareness. Molly Maid owners are encouraged to show their community support raising funds, collecting personal care items and by offering cleaning services to their local shelter. An annual drive is held each October during Domestic Violence Month with over $1.5 million raised to date for 140 local shelters across the United States. 100% of the proceeds flow to local domestic violence shelters.

I subscribe to the philosophy that you can have everything in life you want if you just help enough other people get what they want and this goes double for community involvement. All the success and money in the world doesn't hold a candle to the feeling you have helping others. Of course, for those community involvement activities that we do under our franchise brand there is the added value to separate your franchise brand from other businesses by showing you're a world-class business and one that gives back to the community.

It has been my long-held belief that two critical factors in the success of any franchise system are the strength and reputation of the franchise community as a whole. Driven by that belief, I have for many years committed time to participating in industry initiatives in addition to fulfilling the responsibilities of my position as a franchise executive. As an example, I was a member of the IFA Minorities in Franchising Committee from 1998 to 2009, and served as its Chairman in 2008. Throughout my tenure with this committee, we worked to foster franchise relationships and improve the number and success of minority participants in franchising, particularly with respect to franchisees. I am proud of the minority representation at IKOR even though we are a small system. Since January 2009 I have been heading up the IFA’s Fran-Guard™ program, an initiative being developed under the supervision and guidance of the ICFE Board of Governors. The Fran-Guard program is a revised and expanded franchise sales management and compliance program. Through this program, we demonstrate that when a strong business case for compliance is present inside a franchise organization, stronger franchisor-franchisee relations will be built. The program also was created to demonstrate that the franchise community has the ability to self-regulate and does not need outside regulatory forces coming to bear upon it. I have moderated more than 16 Fran-Guard sessions over the past four years.

When any franchise adopts a cause, it can mobilize its resources and make a difference on a national and even global scale. It’s powerful that most people associate major franchise names with major causes. When a franchise CEO puts his or her name and financial resources behind a major cause and truly makes a difference, people develop positive impressions of these industry leaders, their companies and brand name products. Our longest running cause is fighting hunger on a global scale. Liberty Tax Service CEO John Hewitt has embraced fighting world hunger as his lifetime cause, co-founded Stop Hunger Now, and newest venture,

Race for Food. Even a CEO can’t make a difference alone. The franchise and corporate team effort are behind helping the cause through increased recognition and publicity, fundraising, promotions, and getting employees and franchisees involved. The more awareness created for any franchise brand by its involvement to make a difference, the better for the entire industry. Our company has demonstrated the ability to respond to a plethora of industry challenges and regulations during its most recent tax season and reports solid growth in both tax returns and revenue for the just-completed tax season. Throughout this decade, Liberty Tax Service has demonstrated significant gains in an industry formerly dominated by tax giant H&R Block and, during the 21st century, Liberty has grown by more tax returns than both Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block combined. Liberty Tax Service prepared 11% more returns through April 19, 2011, compared to the same time period in 2010. System wide revenues increased 12%. We continued to offer competitive choices, allowing customers to choose between professional services in brick-and-mortar locations, and do-it-yourself online tax preparation with its eSmart Tax product at www.esmarttax.com. Our company wouldn’t be as successful without the individual success stories of our franchisees who have followed our system to achieve their own financial and independent goals, and future franchisees who follow. Building a successful franchise brand that’s affordable and a valuable asset to its stakeholders heightens the positive awareness of the industry by example.

One of the most concerning proposed changes is the joint employer standard that the National Labor Relations Board has been proposing. This would be devastating to nearly all franchise models. I have taken an educational approach to this problem by writing letters to the congressman in my district and our state senator. I have had lunch meetings with other elected officials to discuss this proposal and to educate them on the serious damage this could cause to the economy. I've found that many did not have a good grasp on how franchised businesses were different than corporately owned and managed locations and often, when they fully understand the differences and the ramification of a policy such as this, they begin to come around.

Liberty Tax Service

H&R Block was ordered to pay Liberty Tax Service one half million dollars for false advertising in 2000, and did pay just over $800,000 in total damages, costs and attorney’s fees. Liberty Tax sued over a false and misleading advertising claim regarding Block’s "refund anticipation loan" product. The controversy surrounded the advertising that promoted Block’s "refund anticipation loan" as a "refund," "refund amount," and "a check in the amount of your refund." The Court ruled that H&R Block didn’t adequately disclose this product as a loan on a tax refund.

Liberty Tax Service had just opened in the Hampton Road area in 2000 with 25 offices. The suit was filed in January 2000, and was tried in November 2000. The ruling stated that most of the ads by H&R Block in the Hampton Roads area were either literally false, or were literally true but misleading, and all other elements of a claim for false advertising were established. H&R Block acted "maliciously, willfully and in bad faith," and specifically targeted Liberty Tax Service. The presiding judge entered a nationwide injunction against H&R Block mandating that they: (1) not use the term "Rapid Refund" in connection with their loan products; (2) not advertise again in violation of IRS regulations and; (3) not use the terms "advance," "refund amount," or check in the "amount of your refund," unless they prominently and clearly stated in the advertisement that the product is a "loan."

As I have stated on numerous occasions during appearances on national news programs and to national news outlets, I am a living example that the American Dream is alive and well. My brother and I immigrated to the United States as children and were able to turn a small shop in Connecticut into a global chain with more than 1,200 locations worldwide. In the process, we created a new category within a highly competitive industry. None of this could have been accomplished if not for franchising and the opportunities it creates for both the franchisor and the franchisee. I have always been -- and will continue to be – an advocate and champion for the franchising model due to the opportunities it provides for individuals, this country and the global community each and every day.

I believe that my long term involvement in the IFA has made a material difference in were the IFA is today. I was instrumental in moving IFA from a position of no money or long term view of its role to one of financial stability and focused objectives. I was also a board member when we cast the vote for franchisee inclusion.

John Galardi was truly a pioneer if only by the company he kept. His close friendship with Glen Bell truly elevated his position as a franchise ambassador. To be associated with giants in this fast food niche speaks volumes of who he was as an individual.

John Hewitt

Liberty Tax Service

The Liberty Tax story started with an already successful entrepreneur ready to take the risk again in the tax industry. John Hewitt envisioned his new company, Liberty Tax Service as a tax franchise that would be the world’s biggest and best. The business model would feature a fresh approach to tax preparation with a winning combination of superlative customer service and cutting-edge technology. Hewitt purchased a Canadian tax company, and opened for business in June of 1997. Using his blueprint for success, Hewitt inaugurated U.S. operations in January 1998 with 5 U.S. offices. Today there are over 3800 Liberty Tax Service offices operating in the United States and Canada. In 1969, when Hewitt was a college student, he took the H&R Block tax course, started as a tax preparer, and started his climb up the H&R Block management ranks. Hewitt advanced to a position as Regional Director, the youngest ever in the Block operating system. Hewitt managed over 2,000 preparers in 250 offices in one of Block’s largest districts.

In the early 1980’s, he and his father developed a decision-tree tax interview program that generated individual responses to tax interview questions. It was the first PC tax software of its kind in the industry. Hewitt was optimistic that he could market this futuristic product to his present employer. H&R Block was not a taker, so Hewitt took steps to found a new tax company. In 1988, the company became Jackson Hewitt, utilizing the unique “Hewtax” tax interview program.

By 1986, IRS personnel also had designs on the positive effects that computerized tax preparation could have on the filing process. This was the first year that the IRS tested the electronic filing process to allow taxpayers to directly file their taxes, bypassing the mailing of returns entirely. The timing was right. Hewitt took Jackson Hewitt public in 1994. The company, a solid second to Block, subsequently sold for $483 million in 1997.

Marian Ilitch

Little Caesars

Franchising is built on the same relationship principles that families grow from. Michael and Marian Ilitch raised their 7 children with the same family values that became the Little Caesars philosophy. In spite of his numerous successes, Michael Ilitch has remained humble. He possesses a high degree of honesty and integrity and is a shining example of what hard work, dedication and perseverance can achieve. He willingly shares his success with employees by providing a fun environment in which to work with competitive benefits and tremendous growth opportunities. Mr. Ilitch’s eagerness to help our nation’s youth and those less fortunate speaks volumes about his caring heart and community spirit. Jo Kirchner Primrose

Schools, Inc.

According to FRANdata and the Franchise Business Review, only 38 percent of franchised enterprises remain after five years. At Primrose, our Franchise Owners are viewed as CEOs of their independently own and operated schools and many have been a part of our company for more than 10 years. How we do this is by ensuring that our Franchise Owners are passionate about the opportunity and more importantly the focus and direction of our company. Moreover, we look for Franchise Owners who understand and value the same business principles that have helped drive the Primrose brand, in turn furthering the growth of the business. Primrose Franchise Owners stay because of the success they find not only with an average school annual revenue of approximately $1.6 million; but, also, with the personal benefits they receive in contributing to a greater cause by helping our children build the right foundation for future learning and life. I’ve made it my mission to continue to draw on bright and passionate entrepreneurs to grow the Primrose franchise opportunity through purposeful innovation and transformation.

Gordon Logan

Sport Clips, Inc.

I started as a franchisee of Command Performance salons in 1979. Served on the Creditors’ Committee during that franchisor’s Chapter 11, and was subsequently elected to the Board of Directors to represent franchisees for two terms in the 1980s. Later I was elected President and Executive Director of our franchisee association, which was disbanded after another franchisee and I bought the franchisor in 1991. We helped the franchisees of that system make an orderly exit from a failed system before starting Sport Clips in 1993 with our first prototype salon. After two years, began franchising in November 1995 with no outside funding, and today our family controls 90+% of the company (some key employees own the balance). We have always put a high value on training and support, which is validated by our success rate…..only 3 stores closed since 2010, and two of those were leases not renewed due to shopping centers having problems with anchors closing.

I have dedicated my life to franchising and I am a long way from done. I have owned a number of very successful franchise companies. I have operated several successful franchises myself and with my family and through it all, I have focused on the people. The staff, the franchisees, their staff, our vendors and fellow franchise industry professionals. I always try to make time for the people for without whom there is no industry or business in franchising. It always has been a relationship, human resource business and industry.

My husband Ron was the General for this Tilted Kilt journey. I have been with him all the way, but there would be no Tilted Kilt Franchise without the Vision, Guts, Tenacity, Creativity, Leadership, Intelligence and Integrity that he possesses. (and, he’s a bit of a gambler too). The Tilted Kilt brand is fueled by his commitment to The Code of the Clan Tilted Kilt by which he expects every person at every level of the organization to operate. The code embodies the values of pride, integrity, respect, strong work ethic and fun. Ron believes in building customer loyalty through exceptional service and commitment to family and community

Our relationship with all our brand franchisees is very positive. I know that our franchisees would be proud of the fact that I am being considered for this award. I am proud of the track record of our franchisees and find it affirming that today many of the Molly Maid owners have built a business they are passing on to their children.

Greg Tanner Aaron’s, Inc.

Greg has spent his entire career in franchising mentoring franchisors, franchisees and development managers in better performing their responsibilities. He believes that we all succeed if the each of us is passionate and thoroughly prepared to excel in this business. “I had the opportunity to work directly with Greg as a Regional Director – Franchising for Aaron’s. Thanks to my 10 years working for Greg, I am today VP, Director of Franchise Sales for Buddy’s Home Furnishing. This would not be possible without the sales, management and people skills I learned from Greg. He has been an important role model in shaping my professional career. I will forever be grateful.”
