Flat Herbie is Here!
February 15, 2019 marked 150 years
since the day the state of Nebraska char-
tered the University of Nebraska. This
means that on February 15, 1869, the
University of Nebraska became a part of
the fabric of our state.
Flat Herbie is here to celebrate this mile-
stone. Cut out Herbie and make him part
of your community by taking him on a tour of your
town. Snap a picture of him at local events, favorite
landmarks, or 4-H activities. Upload the pictures to your
social media channels with #N150Herbie or email us at
[email protected]. We encourage everyone
(students, faculty, staff, 4-H families, and alumni) to get
in on the fun with Flat Herbie throughout 2019!
Flat Herbies are now available to pick up at the Exten-
sion Office. The first 12 participants to post their Flat
Herbie photos in Hall County will receive a red glowing
bouncy ball!
Participate during the month of February to win the
Grand Prize! All photos submitted during Nebraska 4-H
Month will be included in the N|150 Grand Prize Draw-
ing, sponsored by Nebraska 4-H. Two winners will re-
ceive a UNL Prize Pack, filled with Husker Gear!

Fine Arts Night Practice—March 14
If you are participating in the 4-H Fine Arts Night, then
this night is for you! The theater will be open from 4:30-
6:30 pm for practice time and youth encouragement.
Please RSVP to the office by Monday, March 11th, so we
can have a good count as to who will be attending.

Photography Theme for 2019
Attention 4-H Photography enthusiasts!
This upcoming year’s Hall County Unit 1
Photography Theme is Nebraska Trees/Seasons. Get
out and start snapping! Adventure Day at 4-H Camp: Saturday, June 15, 10am-4 pm
Introduce your camper to just how fun 4-H Camp can
be! This camp lets you indulge in your adventurous
side! Wildlife experts join us with a live animal demon-
stration where we will get up close and personal with
some cool wild animals. Then we will head to Schramm
Park where you will get a choice between exploring the
NEW Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium’s interactive exhibits or try
your hand at canoeing and fishing on the ponds.
After a YUMMY Lunch- make sure you pack your swim-
suit because in the afternoon, you will be making a
splash during our water party and taking trips down our
GIANT Waterside!
$35 per person, and includes 1 adult meal per child reg-
istration. Adult chaperones are encouraged to attend,

4-H CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS
The Hall County 4-H Council will award two $100 Camp
scholarships (4-H age 12 and under). To apply, visit
hall.unl.edu for the Camp Scholarship Application or
contact the Hall County Extension Office. Applications
are due April 12th. 4-H members (13 or older) may re-
quest funds to attend camp or other contests.

Help the Hall County
Shooting Sports program
continue to grow! Do you
or someone you know,
have an interest in the
disciplines of shooting? 4-H Shooting Sports is a youth
development educational program. It uses the skills and
disciplines of shooting to assist young people and their
leaders in obtaining knowledge and developing skills.

COMPANION ANIMALS Online Cat Club
Are you interested in learning more about
cats? Are you a friend to the furry felines?
Then the 4-H Online Cat Club is the club for you. You and
your cat can log on and attend the meetings together!
The next meeting is March 14th at 6 pm, log on infor-

4-H Companion Animal Challenge:
The Companion Animal Challenge is a set of contests
for youth interested in companion animals. These
contests are animal-less and test youths’ knowledge
about companion animals. New this year to the con-
test are a Cat Skillathon and an essay contest. 4-H
youth ages 10-18 are invited to participate.
The 4-H Companion Animal Challenge will be held on
Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Animal Science
Complex.
Contests include: Demonstration Contest, Dog Skilla-
thon Contest, Cat Skillathon Contest, Essay Contest,
Art Contest, and Photography Contest.
This event allows youth to apply their companion
animal knowledge, but does not require them to
have an animal!
It will be held the same day as the 4-H Horse Stam-
pede so that youth can compete in both events if
they choose. We will ensure there are not schedule
conflicts.
Entries are due by March 8, 2019.

The 4-H Spring Rabbit Show will be held
Saturday, April 27, 9 am at the Lancaster Event
Center –Exhibit Hall in Lincoln, NE. Open to all youth ages

Youth Poultry Judging Clinic University of Nebraska, Dept. of Animal Science D107

$10 Registration Fee/ Poultry Judging Book $8.00
Bring sack lunch, fun quiz bowl during lunch
An in-depth clinic targeted for FFA and 4-H youth inter-
ested in Poultry Judging. Topics will include laying hen
past production evaluation, egg grading and candling,
carcass grading, and product identification. Fun quiz
bowl activity at lunch break; mock contest
after lunch. Registrations are due March 11
and can be found here:

IMPORTANT information for Dog Show:
All dogs must be owned by the 4-H
member or their family. Exceptions to the
ownership rule must be approved by the
Hall County 4-H Council. Contact Megan if

LIVESTOCK Livestock Calendar:
April 15 - Market Beef DNA/Online Nominations/ID’s
due.
May 21 - Sheep & Goat Tagging, 5:30-7:30 pm at
Fonner Park
June 3 - Pre-Fair Livestock Meeting, 7:00 pm
June 12 - All other animals DNA/Breeding Nominations/
ID’s due.
June 12 - Quality Assurance certificates due.
June 12 - All Hall County Fair entries due by 5 pm to the
Extension office.
New for 2019 - Breeding Gilt Class
Swine exhibitors will still be limited to
4 hogs total per exhibitor, with the option of one shown
as a breeding gilt. The breeding gilt class will show after
showmanship, before the market class. (Breeding gilts
must be identified as 4-H Market Hogs. However, gilts
will be allowed to enter/exhibit in the breeding gilt class
instead of the market gilt class.) Breeding gilts must be
born after December 1st of the previous year (2018).
Market Beef Class Changes:
NEW this year, Bred and Fed Market Beef
will be shown with the rest of the market
beef, with classes split by gender and weight. All class
winners will compete for Champion Steer/Heifer, and
then Champion & Reserve Bred and Fed will be selected.
Animals eligible for Bred and Fed will be marked with an
asterisk in the show program. The change will allow
more opportunities to make it to the championship drive
and allow for better splitting of classes.
Reminder of ID Tag requirements for 4-H Sheep and Goats:
4-H Market Sheep and 4-H Market Goats will require a 4-
H ear tag to be eligible to show at the Hall County Fair
and a Scrapie tag for identification at State Fair. See
hall.unl.edu/hall-county-fair for the Hall County Animal
ID guidelines (includes State Fair requirements).
Quality Assurance for Livestock & Small Animal Exhibitors!
Get ahead of the game & complete your Quality Assur-
ance before the June 12th deadline! Quality Assurance
is REQUIRED for all 4-H members, ages 8 and up, enrolled
in beef, swine, sheep, dairy goats, meat goats, rabbits or
poultry. The course is located at yqca.learngrow.io.
REMEMBER:
1) You will use the 4H Online Sign In, using the same login
and password that you use for 4-H Online.
2) Youth must be enrolled in 4-H Online for the current
year before they can complete Quality Assurance.
3) All 4-H’ers need to use the 4-H tab (not the FFA tab).
4) The charge to complete QA is $12, to be paid online
when taking the course.
5) All registration questions with YQCA should be di-
rected to [email protected].
6) Once QA is completed, print the certificate & turn in
(or email) to the Extension office by JUNE 12th, 2019 in
order to be eligible to show at the Hall County Fair.
7) Paper tests are no longer available.

IMPORTANT ANIMAL ID requirements to be eligible for State Fair
As in the past, DNA will need pulled for all
market animals. In addition, any animals that
you are considering and would like to be eli-
gible to show at State Fair, will also need to be entered
online, by YOU—4-H families at showstockmgr.com.
Market beef must have their information entered online
by April 15. The deadline for all other animals is June 12.

Nebraska Equine Webinar Series
is a great place for 4-H leaders, parents and senior aged
youth to gain knowledge in many different areas. Each
month experts will cover a different topic. The webinars
will be online through zoom. For more information & to

webinar-series. Equine Webinars will be hosted on the
2nd Monday of every month at 6 pm.

A reminder on the Horse High Point requirements:
Two of the three spring horse meetings MUST be attend-
ed to be eligible for the High Point award. These
meetings are held in February, May, and June. The 4-H
member will be required to attend at least one meeting
themselves, and a representative may attend the other
meeting.

2019 Ag Youth Awards: Platte River Radio has again
partnered with Brownfield for the Ag Youth Awards Pro-
gram. This partnership recognizes youth in agriculture
during county fair season and we are proud to honor the
hard-working youth in our area counties. All youth (any
age), involved in 4-H, FFA, or any other Ag related activi-
ties, are invited to apply. Applications can be found at

HUSKER HARVEST DAYS SCHOLARSHIPS
Nine scholarships valued at $1,200 will be awarded by
Husker Harvest Days to high school graduating seniors
pursuing a program or career in agribusiness or agricul-
ture. Copies of the application are available at the Hall
County Extension Office or at hall.unl.edu/4-h-member-
resources and must be postmarked by March 22 to the
Grand Island Chamber of Commerce.
Become a Hall County 4-H Ambassador!
The Ambassadors program is dedicated to leadership
development throughout a one year period. The pro-
gram will provide participants with hands-on experienc-
es to promote leadership and communication skills. This
program aims to produce quality leaders who will assist
in the betterment of the Hall County 4-H program
throughout their 4-H careers.
Ambassadors will:
Promote the 4-H program.
Assist Hall County Extension Staff with 4-H events
(promotional, recruitment, workshops, etc) through-
out the year and at the Hall County Fair.
Speak at community functions, schools, organizations,
and with the media, about 4-H.
Attend two Hall County 4-H Council meetings, serving
on the Promotion and Recruitment committee.
Be encouraged to serve on the Hall County 4-H Coun-
cil as a youth representative provided a position is
available.
Gain essential leadership skills and meet new people!
How will you benefit?
Increased public speaking, communication, and media
skills.
Gain great experience to add to college and job appli-
cations.
$50 is awarded at term completion.
Who can apply?
Active 4-H members, 13-18 years of age as of Decem-
ber 31, currently enrolled in Hall County 4-H.

gram will provide a venue for you to experience educa-
tion as a career pathway, helping you decide if you
would enjoy & feel passionate about this career choice.
Through iGrow Career Immersion, you will…
Increase youth development knowledge.
Learn from job shadow and real work experiences.
Gain first-hand experience in teaching youth and de-
veloping engaging lesson plans and programs, while
serving Hall County youth.
Explore career options and learn to work in a profes-
sional setting.
Tailor and specialize your experience to your areas of
interest.
Complete your career development experience within
one year, approximately 50 hours of volunteer time,
with flexible scheduling.
Finalize your experience with
a summary of your learning.
How will you benefit?
Gain great career development experience and build
your resume.
Acquire real world knowledge and experience that will
help you grow as a professional individual.
Receive a financial award from Hall County 4-H Coun-
cil after successfully completing the program.
Who can apply?
High school juniors or seniors, or 1st year college stu-
dents. Applicants must be enrolled in 4-H and remain
4-H age-eligible until the experience is complete.
