Toyota has had a very successful way to make automobiles. They have maintained a very high quality while maintaining a very high value to price ratio. One of the biggest blows to the brand was when Toyota had a huge recall of more than 8 million cars to replace floor mats and adjust accelerator pedals. For the first time, the Toyota Production System(TPS) was being heavily questioned. From the outside many would think that Toyota's lack of answers was a weakness in their production system but those who understand the TPS model know that it is better not to say anything when you don’t know then say something and have it be wrong. A major part of the TPS quality system is a "test” known as recreating the failure mode. In the case of the accelerators sticking Toyota could not do this and therefore had a hard time understanding what went wrong. In the end, many of the accelerator issues not having to do with the mat were proven to be incorrect and false claims. The Toyota Production System is effective in giving consumers a high quality product for prices equivalent to the next best alternative. Akio Toyoda, current president of Toyota declared that “Toyota’s priority has traditionally been the following: First: safety; second: quality; and third: volume’” (source: The Guardian) To back up this statement, Toyota has added several improvements , One of which is the brake-override system. This system is activated when the brake is pushed after the gas pedal and the gas remains active the car will, in most situations, react to the brake pedal. Toyota has always maintained their overall quality. Even with these accusations they still remain as one of the best car brands in the world. Their dedication to quality is one of the main reasons they maintain this high regard in the minds of their consumers.
