• Iran’s efforts remain primarily focused on the under-protected US corporate sector and US allies.

• Last year it emerged that Bahrain was one of the countries being targeted by an Iran based cyber-spies group Leafminer.

TDT | Manama

Amidst rising tension be-tween Iran and Western nations over the Iranian

aggression in the Strait of Hor-muz, Tehran is stepping up cy-berattacks against the Kingdom, Wall Street Journal reported.

As ever in the cyber domain, there is always some level of activity, but the  WSJ  reports that such activity has now risen “above the normal level of Irani-an cyber activity.”

The recent attacks have tar-geted many governmental as well as private institutions.

According to the WSJ, US intel-ligence has suggested Tehran is the likely culprit, with a Bah-rain Ministry of Interior spokes-person  assuring that “robust safeguards are in place,” adding that “in the first half of 2019, the authorities had successful-ly intercepted over six million attacks and over 830,000 mali-cious emails”.

While these attacks have re-portedly been against targets in Bahrain, the message will have been received by other states in

the region as well as by the US and its allies more broadly.

For the time being, though, Iran’s efforts remain primarily focused on the under-protected US corporate sector (including critical infrastructure) and US allies.

Two weeks after  US Cyber Command hit Iran’s command and control structure in the

aftermath of the downing of a US surveillance drone, came a warning  that an Iranian-led hack was targeting the millions of unpatched Microsoft Outlook systems, Forbes reported.

“And since then we have seen attacks on LinkedIn as well. An attack in one domain led to re-taliation in another. This is a ma-jor hybrid warfare development

seen this year,” a US official was quoted by the magazine.

The WSJ cites US officials “fa-miliar with the matter,” who confirmed the cyber breaches in Bahrain—saying that at least three entities had suffered in-trusions.”

Obvious parallels were drawn with the Shaman attacks from 2012, which targeted state oil

and gas companies in Saudi Ara-bia.

In June, the US Department of Homeland Security warned of a”recent rise in malicious cy-ber activity directed at United States industries and govern-ment agencies by Iranian regime actors and proxies.”

The National Security Agency has also warned of malicious Iranian cyber actions, telling AP “in these times of heightened tensions, it is appropriate for everyone to be alert to signs of Iranian aggression in cyberspace and ensure appropriate defences are in place.”

Information and eGovern-ment Authority (IGA) Chief Ex-ecutive Mohamed Ali AlQaed said that iGA has not had any issues in dealing with the at-tacks, and so far all attacks have been dealt with success without causing any downtime to gov-ernment or private entities.

“Bahrain and this whole re-gion have been under the attack constantly in the past few years and we have been dealing with them as needed. The positive aspect is that there has been no major downtime because of these attacks.

“Organisations and businesses did not have to close for any con-siderable period of time because of these attacks. Normal oper-ations have continued despite these attacks,” he said.

Last year it emerged that Bah-rain was one of the countries being targeted by an Iran based cyber-spies group Leafminer.

The cyber espionage group Leafminer released a threat actor to target many countries in the region and Bahrain was one of them, according to US cyber-security firm Symantec.

France says ‘needs no permission’ for Iran dialogue

Paris, France

France said yesterday that it “needs no permission” to

work towards easing tensions between Iran and the US, after President Donald Trump ac-cused his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron of med-dling in the dispute.

“On Iran, France speaks with complete sovereignty. It is working hard for peace and security in the region, it is working to facilitate a de-esca-lation in tensions and it needs no permission to do so,” For-eign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a statement.

In a tweet Thursday, Trump claimed that Iranian officials want “desperately to talk to the US, but are given mixed signals from all of those purporting to represent us, including Presi-dent Macron of France.”

“I know Emmanuel means

well, as do all others, but no-body speaks for the United States but the United States itself. No one is authorized in any way, shape, or form, to rep-resent us!” he said.

Le Drian said the worsening tensions between Tehran and Washington called for initia-tives to try to restore dialogue.

“That’s what President Ma-cron is doing, in full transpar-ency with our partners, above all our European partners,” he said, adding that Macron was “obviously keeping American authorities informed”.

Trump has reimposed crip-pling sanctions on Iran after pulling out of an internation-al deal aimed at curbing the country’s nuclear ambitions.

The dispute with Iran is ex-pected to be one of the major talking points at a G7 summit in the French city of Biarritz later this month.

Dozens dead in fresh Chad ethnic fightingN’Djamena, Chad

At least 37 people have been killed in fresh fighting

this week between farmers and herders from rival ethnic groups in Chad, President Id-riss Deby said yesterday.

The violence broke out over three days in the province of Ouaddai, a strategic area on the eastern border with Sudan, he said.

“The intercommunal con-flict has become a national concern,” Deby told a press conference to mark the coun-try’s independence day. “We are witnessing a terrible phe-

nomenon.”Eastern Chad is in the grip

of a cycle of violence be-tween nomadic camel herd-ers -- many from the Zagha-wa ethnic group from which Deby hails -- and sedentary farmers from the Ouaddian community.

Trash for tickets on Indonesia’s ‘plastic bus’Jakarta, Indonesia

Dozens of people clutching bags full of plastic bottles

and disposable cups queue at a busy bus terminal in the Indo-nesian city of Surabaya -- where passengers can swap trash for travel tickets.

The nation is the world’s sec-ond-biggest marine polluter behind China and has pledged to reduce plastic waste in its waters some 70 percent by 2025 by boosting recycling, raising public awareness, and curbing usage.

The Surabaya scheme has been a hit in the city of 2.9 mil-lion, with nearly 16,000 pas-sengers trading trash for free travel each week, according to authorities.

“This is a very smart solution. It’s free and instead of throwing away bottles people now col-lect them and bring them here,”

explains 48-year-old resident Fransiska Nugrahepi.

An hour-long bus ride with unlimited stops costs three large

bottles, five medium bottles or 10 plastic cups. But they must be cleaned and cannot be squashed.

There is a steady stream of

people squeezing past sacks full of recyclables to deposit plastic in four bins behind the small office and claim their tickets.

Franki Yuanus, a Surabaya transport official, says the pro-gramme aims not only to cut waste but also to tackle traf-fic congestion by encourag-ing people to switch to public transit.

“There has been a good re-sponse from the public,” insists Yuanus, adding: “Paying with plastic is one of the things that has made people enthusiastic because up until now plastic waste was just seen as useless.”

Currently the fleet consists of 20 near-new buses, each with recycling bins and ticket officers who roam the aisles to collect any leftover bottles.

Authorities said roughly six tons of plastic rubbish are col-lected from passengers each

month before being auctioned to recycling companies.

Nurhayati Anwar, who uses the bus about once a week with

her three-year-old son, said the trash swap programme is chang-ing how people see their throw-away cups and bottles.

“Now people in the office or at home are trying to collect (rub-bish) instead of just throwing it away,” the 44-year-old account-ant told AFP after trading in sev-eral bottles for a free ride.

“We now know that plastic is not good for the environment -- people in Surabaya are starting to learn.”

Other parts of Indonesia, an archipelago of some 17,000 is-lands, are also trying to tackle the issue.

Bali is phasing in a ban on sin-gle-use plastic straws and bags to rid the popular holiday island of waste choking its waterways, while authorities in the capital Jakarta are considering a similar bylaw to rid the city of plastic shopping bags.

Commuters exchanging plastic bottles for Suroboyo bus tickets at a terminal in the Indonesian city of Surabaya.

A 2016 report by the Ellen MacArthur Foun-dation warned there

would be more plastic than fish, by weight,

in the seas by 2050. It estimated eight million tonnes of plastics enter

oceans annually.

Hong Kong leader rules out concessions as protesters stage airport sit-inHong Kong, China

Hong Kong ’s leader Carrie Lam yesterday

ruled out concessions to “silence the violent pro-testers”, as pro-democracy activists who have staged months of demonstrations rallied at the city’s airport.

Her comments came as she warned that the demon-strations now in their third month were causing eco-nomic chaos in the interna-tional financial hub.

Lam, whose support for a bill to allow extradition to mainland China sparked the unrest, said the econom-ic impact threatened to be worse than the 2003 SARS outbreak or the 2008 finan-cial crash for the city.

“Compared to the eco-nomic downturn caused by SARS that we handled pre-viously, even to the (2008) economic crisis, the situ-ation this time is more se-vere,” she said at an abrupt-ly-organised press confer-ence on Friday afternoon.

“In other words, the eco-nomic recovery will take a very long time.”

Armed man in body armor arrested at Missouri WalmartWashington, United States

A 20-year-old man armed with an assault rifle

has been arrested at a Wal-mart store in the midwest-ern US state of Missouri and charged with making a “terrorist threat,” police said.

Dmitriy Andreychenko, who was wearing body ar-mor and fatigues, was de-tained by an armed off-duty firefighter who held him until police arrived, police said.

No shots were fired and no injuries were reported in the incident on Thursday in the city of Springfield, which has a population of around 160,000.

Neymar ‘relieved’ after rape case dismissedSao Paulo, Brazil

Brazilian football star Ney-mar said he was “relieved”

on Friday after a judge in Sao Paulo dismissed the rape case against the Paris Saint Germain forward citing insufficient evi-dence.

“I’ll be sincere and I’m not going to say I’m happy, but yes, relieved,” said Neymar in an Instagram post.

The decision -- the final ep-isode in the rape case hanging over the superstar since June -- comes on the recommenda-tion of prosecutors just over a month after police dropped the case citing lack of evidence.

Neymar vehemently denied allegations he raped a Brazilian woman in a Paris hotel in May.

Judge Ana Paula Vieira de Moraes “accepted prosecutors recommendations and demand-

ed the case be dismissed,” a court spokesman told AFP.

Neymar said he would “never forget” this incident due to the “PAIN it caused me, my family and the people who really know me.”

He added: “This scar will remain to remind me at what point people are capable of doing good things, but also of doing BAD things.”

Prosecutor Flavia Merlini had argued that the plaintiff Najila Trindade, a Brazilian model, had provided no con-clusive evidence of rape against the PSG player.

“What happened between four walls is impossible to know, we have her word against his,” Merlini told reporters. “We have decided to ask for the closure of the case.”

However Merlini said dis-missal was not equivalent to acquittal for Neymar, 27, the world’s most expensive foot-baller.

The case could be reopened at any time should new evi-dence emerge, she said.

British student was ‘depressed’ before jumping from planeAntananarivo, Madagascar

A British student in Mad-agascar who apparently jumped from a plane af-

ter opening the aircraft’s door mid-air was “depressed” and disappointed by her studies, the African island police said Thursday.

Cambridge  University stu-dent Alana Cutland, 19, who was on a research trip, fell from a light aircraft shortly after it took off from an airport in re-mote northwestern Madagas-car last month.

Her body was found by villag-ers on Tuesday in the Mahad-rodroka forest, and transported to the capital Antananarivo on Thursday.

The chief investigator said they found anti-malarial pills in her bag, but only two were tak-en, although it is unclear when exactly she took those.

Some sleeping pills were also found in her hotel room.

“We found in her bag, a box of anti-malaria medication and we were told that she also had sleeping pills on the table in her hotel room,” the lead investiga-tor Spinola Edvin Nomenjana-hary said by phone.

He said she had mumbled

during a phone call with her parents who then suggested she return home.

“The parents had difficul-ties recognising their daughter during their last phone con-versation and had asked her to take the same flight as Mrs Ruth Johnson, a British woman who was staying at the same hotel as her,” said Nomenjanahary.

“Before leaving, on July 25th, (Johnson) went looking for her in her room, and found Alana, sitting on a chair, looking lost and staring into space,” added Nomenjanahary.

Cutland’s uncle previously said she had become ill during her trip, possibly due to pre-scription medication, according

to British newspaper reports. She also contacted her super-

visor, according to police. She was “disappointed” when

her parents asked her to drop the research and return to Lon-don, he said.

Around five minutes into the flight, which took off from a small airport at Anjajavy to the capital Antananarivo, she ap-parently opened the plane door and jumped.

The pilot and Johnson, who was a passenger on the flight, say they tried in vain to stop her.

“She jumped, no one pushed her,” said Ralaivaonary.

Anjajavy villagers only found her body two weeks after the incident.

Trump says US ‘not ready’ to make trade deal with ChinaWashington, United States

President Donald Trump said yesterday he was not

ready to finalize a trade deal with Beijing and signaled he might cancel talks set for September, raising the stakes in the intensifying US-China trade war.

“We’ll see whether or not we keep our meeting in Septem-ber,” Trump told reporters at the White House before head-ing out on vacation at his New Jersey golf resort.

Relations have soured fur-ther in the past week after

Trump announced a new round of punitive tariffs on Chinese goods, despite a truce agreed with President Xi Jin-ping, and Beijing responded by halting all purchases of US agricultural goods.

The US Treasury then de-clared China a currency ma-nipulator, after the yuan lost value in the face of the new round of tariffs due to take effect September 1.

“We’re not ready to make a deal but we’ll see what hap-pens,” Trump said. “We have all the cards. We’re doing well.”

Markets sink on Italy, UK, trade war woesLondon, United Kingdom

Stock markets slumped and the pound hit a fresh two-year low against the euro

Friday as traders reacted to a sudden Italian political crisis, a British economic contraction and a new twist in the US-China trade war.

Equities have fallen for much of August amid lingering con-cerns of a global economic slowdown as Washington and Beijing continue to exchange trade blows.

US President Donald Trump raised the stakes again on Fri-day, saying he was not ready to finalise a trade deal with China and even indicating he might cancel talks scheduled in Sep-tember.

“We’re not ready to make a deal but we’ll see what hap-pens... We have all the cards. We’re doing well,” Trump told reporters at the White House before heading out on vaca-tion at his New Jersey golf resort.

Analyst David Madden at trading firm CMC Markets UK said: “Beijing won’t like the lat-est development, so the uncer-tainty is likely to spill over into next week.”

Wall Street shares dove after the announcement, as did Eu-ropean markets, which were already headed downward over Italian political ructions and data showing the UK’s Brex-it-facing economy is on the brink of recession.

“Political uncertainty in It-aly has rocked stock markets around Europe,” Madden said.

Milan’s stock market closed down more than two per cent after Italy’s far-right Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini pulled his support for the coun-try’s coalition government on Thursday and called for snap elections.

The heightened political ten-sions in the heavily-indebted country -- the eurozone’s third largest economy -- also caused yields to rise on Italian govern-ment bonds.

In currency trading, the

pound’s woes helped propel the euro to a two-year high at 92.86 pence.

Adding to Britain’s economic troubles, official data released Friday showed the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) fell 0.2 pc in the second quarter, the first time it has contracted in almost seven years.

Another decline in the third quarter would put Britain in recession ahead of the nation’s expected withdrawal from the EU on October 31.

“All in all, today’s disappoint-ing GDP figure is set to raise alarm bells over Brexit dragging the UK economy deeper into the abyss,” said Lukman Otunu-ga, senior research analyst at FXTM.

Volatile week

Elsewhere, Frankfurt’s DAX 30 index sank 1.3 pc after data showed German exports in June were eight pc lower than a year earlier, the country’s latest weak economic indicator.

In Asia, stock markets large-ly reversed early gains from a bargain-hunting push as inves-tors remained wary about the US-China trade war.

It was a volatile week for markets, with equities ham-mered on Monday after Bei-jing allowed the yuan to slide against the dollar following Trump’s announcement of fresh tariffs on Chinese goods starting September 1.

Oil prices surged on Friday, boosted by reports that Saudi Arabia was trying to get fel-low OPEC members to bolster prices.

Huawei unveils own operating systemDongguan, China

Chinese telecom giant Hua-wei unveiled its own op-

erating system yesterday, as it faces the threat of losing ac-cess to Android systems amid escalating US-China trade ten-sions.

Richard Yu, the head of Huawei’s consumer business, told a press conference in the southern city of Dongguan that the new system, called HarmonyOS or HongMeng in Chinese, would “bring more harmony and convenience to the world”.

Yu said the new system was a “future oriented OS” to be

“more smooth and secure”, which he said was “completely different from Android and iOS”.

Huawei said the first ver-sion of the operating system would launch later this year in its smart screen products.

Over the next three years it will be developed across a range of smart devices includ-ing wearable technology.

Economic uncertainty threatens oil demand: IEAParis, France

Concerns over the health of the global economy,

marked by the US- Chi-na trade dispute, forced the International Energy Agency yesterday to lower its growth forecast for oil demand for 2019 and 2020.

“There have been con-cerns about the health of the global economy expressed in recent editions of this re-port and shown by reduced expectations for oil demand growth,” the Paris-based agency said in its monthly report.

“Now, the situation is becoming even more un-certain: the US-China trade dispute remains unresolved and in September new tar-iffs are due to be imposed.”

“Tension between the two has increased further this week, reflected in heavy falls for stock and com-modity markets. Oil prices have been caught up in the retreat.”

It also noted the Inter-national Monetary Fund’s recent downgrading of its economic outlook.

The IEA thus revised downwards its estimates for growth in global oil demand for this year by 0.1 million barrels per day to 1.1 mbd.

For 2020, growth was also predicted to be slightly down, by 50,000 barrels per day to 1.3 mbd.

It warned “the outlook is fragile with a greater likeli-hood of a downward revi-sion than an upward one”, and noted growth was al-ready “sluggish” in the first half of the year.

However, it noted that the market balance has been tightened slightly in the short-term by a reduc-tion in supply from OPEC countries.

The IEA also said it was closely monitoring oil se-curity in the Gulf, where OPEC member Iran last week seized the third for-eign tanker in less than a month as part of a bitter dis-pute with the United States.

The Kitchen: three caged birds go wildly, witlessly freeThe film tells the story of mob wives who turn mobster in a drama that’s just like ‘Widows’

• Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss, and Tiffany Haddish star as a trio of fed-up wives who take over the family business in ‘70s-era New York

The Kitchen is an American crime drama film written and directed by Andrea Berloff, in her direc-

torial debut. The film stars Melissa McCarthy, Tif-

fany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss as the wives of Irish mobsters who take over organized crime operations in the 1970s in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood after the FBI arrests their husbands.

The film also features Domhnall Glee-son, James Badge Dale, Brian d’Arcy James, with Margo Martindale, Common, and Bill Camp in supporting roles.

Yes, this is a story about three women who run a mob. Yes, they threaten and off a few people. And yes, it might be kind of a, well, surprise for some, to see a major motion picture serving them up to us in a sympathetic light. But before everybody goes racing to post their moral outrage, let me remind you: the story of The Kitch-en, based on a comic book series, was

inspired by real women who ruled New York’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood back in the 1970’s.

Andrea Berloff ’s film introduces us to our anti-heroines just as their husbands are nabbed during an armed robbery. Left

with little money and fewer options, the women develop a system of their own, offering “security” to neighborhood busi-nesses. The vying Westies gang isn’t hap-py, but the women are. And pretty soon, they’re not just rich, they’re in trouble.

Even when the tone and sometimes awkward script jump abruptly, Berloff manages to tell her story with enough detail to engage us, similarly to the way a mob drama starring men would. Respect is paid, but this is no feminist manifesto.

This is a crime drama, albeit with a twist. And it’s got some nifty performances in it.

Elizabeth Moss is top notch in per-haps the most complex role. Melissa Mc-Carthy continues to impress with this, her second leading dramatic role. And wait till you see what Tiffany Haddish, starring in her first big screen drama, does here. Common, sadly, is not given a whole lot to do, but maybe it’s just that he’s up against competing-for-heartthrob Domhnall Gleeson, an actor who has giv-en some impressive performances before, but reveals a whole other side which is, shall we say, memorable.

Shawn Mendes celebrates 21st birthday with Camila CabelloLos Angeles

As Shawn Mendes entered in his 21st year, he kicked off celebra-tions with a special someone.

The birthday boy was seen in New York City on Wednesday (lo-cal time) with his rumored girl-friend Camila Cabello, reported E!News.

When they were able to rejoin, they walked to the end of the boule-vard hand-in-hand. “Both Shawn and Camila were laughing and talking a lot,” the eyewitness added.

As for Shawn’s actual birthday, which is being celebrated on Friday, E-News has learned the recent co-stars were spotted at Jack’s Wife Fre-da in New York City around 10 a.m. for a breakfast date.

Kristen Bell recalls her and Dax

Los Angeles

Despite a c t o r K r i s -

t e n B e l l ’ s s k y - r e a c h i n g stardom, her hus-band Dax Shepard is the biggest fan-boy of Beyonce

and Jay-Z.A few years ago, the

actor accompanied her wife to the star-studded Met Gala and they happened to be seated at a table next to none other than Beyonce and Jay-Z, who Shepard is a huge fan of.

“We went to the Met Gala a couple of years ago and we were sitting right next to Jay-Z and Beyonce. When we found this out we

were, forget it, we were so ex-cited. And I was like, ‘Oh this

is going to be great, final-ly, after tonight, we’ll

have them in

our phones, and we’ll be best friends.’ And then we maneuvered the table so that Dax could sit right next to Jay-Z and Dax talked his ear off and I don’t think Jay was that interested,” Bell said on an episode of the ‘First We Feast,’ on Thursday (local time).

“But I was proud of him that he went for broke! Talk to the person you love. I think at one point he also hit him with a lyric, I think he was like, ‘Real recognize real!’ And I was like, Dax, Dax, don’t.’” she added, according to E!News.

Earlier too Shepard had expressed his ad-miration for the rapper, during ‘The L a t e L a t e Show With J a m e s Corden,’ saying, “ I a m t h e n u m -ber one J a y - Z f a n i n America.”

Granduciel.“Surprise!!!” the mom-to-be wrote on Ins-

with a music-themed baby shower.The gathering witnessed a re-

cord player-shaped cake and a variety of music-inspired cook-ies, a fitting theme given the new dad’s occupation.

With the third and final season of her Netflix series officially released, she is also marking one

personal chapter after shutting a professional one.

Copyright lawsuit filed against Lady Gaga’s ‘Shallow’ from ‘A Star is Born’Los Angeles

Pop icon Lady Gaga is fac-ing a copyright lawsuit for her song ‘Shallow’

from ‘A Star is Born’.The suit is filed by song-

writer Steve Ronsen who has claimed that Gaga stole the melody of the song from one that released back in 2012, re-ported Page Six.

Detailing his claim in the suit, Ronsen stated that a three-note progression in ‘Shallow’ is based on his song titled ‘Almost’. And as damag-es, Ronsen and his attorney have asked for millions of dol-lars for settlement.

To fight her case, the 33-year-old pop s i n g e r h a s hired a New York City law-yer Orin Sny-der, who says the superstar will not back down.

Snyder said, “Mr. Ronsen and his lawyer are trying to make easy money off the back of a successful artist. It is shameful and wrong. I ap-plaud Lady Gaga for having the courage and integrity to stand up on behalf of success-ful artists who find themselves on the receiving end of such [claims].”

Hitting back at Ronsen’s claims, Gaga’s legal team states that ‘Almost’ sounds nothing like ‘Shallow’ and the progres-sion he claimed to be similar is common and can be heard in musical pieces quite often.

‘Shallow’ is a track from Gaga and Bradley Cooper starrer ‘A Star is Born’ which released in 2018. The track is penned by Gaga along with Mark Ronson.

Michelle Williams hopes for more screen time in ‘Venom 2’Los Angeles

Michelle Williams has confirmed that she will

be coming back for “Venom” sequel but hopes she gets equal screen time with co-star Tom Hardy.

In an inter-view with Ya-hoo, Williams said she is look-ing forward to work with Andy Serkis, who takes over from Fleischer as the director of “Venom 2”.

“I’m in. I’m such a fan of Andy’s, and I’m so inspired by what he’s been able to ac-complish. He’s so gifted in such a specific way, and I’m very excited to learn from him and be around him,” the 38-year-old actor said.

Serena, Osaka set up rematchSerena Williams and Naomi Osaka book US Open final rematch in Toronto

quarter-final

• Karolina Pliskova keeps no. 1 hopes alive by reaching Toronto quarters

AFP | Toronto

Serena Williams and Japan’s Naomi Osaka booked a rematch of last year’s US

Open final in the WTA Toronto quarter-finals after straight-set triumphs Thursday.

Reigning US and Australian Open champion Osaka broke at love in the final game to de-feat Polish teen Iga Swiatek 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 after one hour and 51 minutes.

World number 10 Williams was broken twice and dropped the first three games in 10 min-utes then battled back to defeat Russia’s 48th-ranked Ekateri-na Alexandrova 7-5, 6-4 in 91 minutes.

That set the stage for Wil-liams, a 37-year-old American who will try for a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title at the upcoming US Open, to again face Osaka after the con-troversial finish to their Grand Slam showdown last year in New York.

It would be the first match between Osaka and Williams since the Japanese star defeat-ed her childhood idol 6-2, 6-4 in last year’s US Open final, a match marred by an on-court dispute between Williams and the umpire that led to a game penalty against Williams.

Osaka was booed by some fans

during the awards ceremony and later dubbed what should have been her moment of glory “a little bittersweet.”

Williams spoke after her match but before she knew who she would face in the quarter-fi-nals, saying either Osaka -- who could return to the world num-ber one ranking next week -- or Swiatek would be worthy foes.

“It will be a good match, who-ever wins,” Williams said. “Both players are playing well in this tournament in particular, so I’ll be ready for her.”

Alexandrova broke Williams -- the 2001, 2011 and 2013 Cana-dian champion -- in the first and third games for a 3-0 edge only to have Williams roll through the next four games.

They held from there until the final game of the first set, when the Russian’s eighth double fault handed Williams the set after 46

minutes.“(Alexandrova) hit really, re-

ally hard and she was hitting a lot of winners, so I was just happy I was able to just fight through that,” Williams said.

Alexandrova broke Williams again to open the second set, but the US star pulled level in the sixth game and broke again in the 12th to advance after 91 minutes.

“I’m feeling good,” Williams said. “Just hopefully just being

able to stay in the rhythm and playing this week and next week would be good.”

Williams said she is struggling with the transition from clay to grass to hardcourts more than usual this year.

“I definitely feel like it takes a while to get back into the rhythm,” she said. “So it defi-nitely feels different, especially for me now. Usually I don’t feel that huge of a difference, but for whatever reason I do this year.”

Pliskova chases No. 1 Czech third seed Karolina

Pliskova kept the pressure on Osaka in the battle to take the world number one ranking by also reaching the quarter-finals.

Pliskova eliminated Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 7-5 to set up a last-eight clash with rising Canadian star Bianca Andrees-cu, who outlasted fifth-seeded Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-1, 6-7 (7/9), 6-4.

Pliskova, 27, must reach the fi-nal to have any chance of taking the top spot next week. Other-wise, Osaka will claim the num-ber one berth.

French Open champion Ash-leigh Barty’s stint as the world’s top-ranked player was assured of ending after she was knocked out on Tuesday.

Defending champion and fourth seed Simona Halep of Romania, coming off a Wim-bledon title last month, beat Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-1 to book a quarter-final against Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova, who ousted Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-2.

Nadal, Federer deciside to re-enter ATP politics

AFP | Montreal

World number two Ra-fael Nadal said Thurs-

day that he and long-time rival Roger Federer made a joint decision to stand for the ATP Player Council.

The 33-year-old Spaniard, an 18-time Grand Slam singles winner, confirmed the choice by the pair of icons at the ATP Montreal Masters after reach-ing the quarter-finals.

Federer, a 20-time Slam singles champion, and Nadal were elected by fellow play-ers to fill two of the vacancies caused by the resignations of Robin Haase, Jamie Murray and Sergiy Stakhovsky prior to Wimbledon.

“We decided to be together out there,” Nadal said. “I will not be alone there. He will not be alone there.

“Both of us can (combine to) be a good power, good help for the sport in some way -- hope-fully in a better way.

“We are here to help and to know a little bit better what’s going on. Last year have been

some up and downs in a lot of things.”

Controversy has arisen over the past months concerning various issues, with ATP Coun-cil president Novak Djokovic often on the opposite side of discussions from Nadal and Federer.

The world number one Serb has clashed with many fellow players with disagreements centered on the decision to dispense with the services of ATP chief executive Chris Kermode, a popular figure in tennis.

Splits widened at Wimble-don when Djokovic was tak-en to task over his relation-ship with the disgraced Jus-tin Gimelstob. Former player Gimelstob, who has sat on the player council, pleaded no con-test to assault charges in Los Angeles earlier this year for attacking a man in front of his wife and children at Hallow-een in 2018.

Djokovic has come under fire for refusing to rule out a possible return to the board for Gimelstob.

Rain plays spoilsport as Gayle misses history bid against IndiaAFP | Providence, Guyana

Inclement weather forced the abandon-ment of the first one-day international

between the West Indies and India at the Guyana National Stadium on Thursday, after Chris Gayle was made to wait for the hosts’ ODI run-scoring record.

Only 13 overs were bowled after the home side were put in to bat when India captain Virat Kohli won the toss, with the West Indies reaching 54 for one before rain drove them off the field.

Having already started two hours late because of morning showers, the further

rain interruptions during the brief in-nings ended any hopes of a result and any lingering prospect of play was washed away by the latest downpour in mid-af-ternoon.

Veteran opening batsman Gayle was the lone wicket to fall, being bowled by left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav for just four, leaving him nine runs short of surpassing the tally of outstanding former batsman and captain Brian Lara of 10,405 as the most by a West Indian in ODIs.

Gayle, who has reversed a decision to retire from the 50 overs-per-side format

of the game after the World Cup, occu-pied 31 deliveries before being dismissed.

This is his 299th ODI, equalling Lara’s record for the most by a West Indian.

It therefore means that the 39-year-old will establish a new ODI record for West Indies appearances and also has the chance to surpass Lara’s run tally when the second match is played in Trinidad -- Lara’s homeland -- on Sunday.

In contrast to Gayle’s pedestrian in-nings, Evin Lewis was unbeaten on 40 off 36 deliveries (three sixes, two fours) in partnership with Shai Hope when the match was called off.

Wolves close on Europa League group stage with thumping winAFP | Paris

Wolves moved a step closer to reaching the Europa

League group stage for the first time as Raul Jimenez scored twice in a 4-0 thrashing of Ar-menia’s Pyunik in the third qualifying round, first leg, on Thursday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves, who made it into qualifying by finishing seventh in the Premier League last season as a new-ly-promoted club, made short work of their hosts in Yerevan.

Wing-back Matt Doherty, who scored eight goals last term, rolled in a 29th-minute opener, before Jimenez made it two three minutes before half- time.

Mexican international Jime-nez grabbed his fourth goal of qualifying shortly after the restart, having also netted two against Crusaders in the previ-ous round.

New signing Patrick Cutrone was given a debut as a late sub-stitute, and won an injury-time penalty which Ruben Neves

converted to all but put the tie to bed.

Wolves, who lost to Totten-ham in the 1972 UEFA Cup final and are playing their first Eu-ropean campaign since 1980, will likely face a tricky play-off round against Torino should they complete the job against Pyunik and the Italians beat Be-larus’ Shakhtyor.

Torino, seventh-placed finish-ers in Serie A last season, cruised past Shakhtyor 5-0 with Italy striker Andrea Belotti scoring twice.Ruben Neves of Wolverhampton Wanderers scores a goal to make it 0-4 from a

Bayern romp to 23-0 win over amateur side

German champions Bay-ern Munich showed no

mercy to amateur side FC Rottach-Egern by romping to a 23-0 friendly win on Thursday, 12 months after beating the same side 20-2.

Among the scorers were Corentin Tolisso with four while Robert Lewandowski and Otschi Wriedt both grabbed hat-tricks with Thomas Mueller claiming a brace.

Bayern coach Niko Kovac made 10 changes at half-time, with New Zealand in-ternational Sarpreet Singh among the newcomers.

The 20-year-old talent, who arrived from Welling-ton Phoenix earlier this year, scored twice before the hour mark to pick up his first goals in a Bayern shirt.

Bayern’s record signing Lucas Hernandez also came on at half-time to make his first appearance for the club. The French World Cup winner joined Bayern for 80 million euros earlier this year, but has been out of action since February due to a knee injury.

Real Madrid will rival Barce-lona in the race to sign Paris

Saint-Germain striker Neymar this summer, according to re-ports in the Spanish press on yesterday.

Madrid have shifted focus to Neymar after the close of

the English Premier L e a g u e ’s t ra n s -

fer window on Thursday ended their hopes of

signing Manches-ter United midfielder Paul Pogba.

According to Marca, Ney-mar has “returned to the scene” with the club “be-lieving for some time that the team is lacking a big

star up front”. Sports newspaper AS

claims the Brazilian has been offered to Madrid by PSG, who are open to selling if they can either recoup the 222 million euros they spent on him in 2017 or receive half

that amount, with players included in the deal.

It means La Liga’s two great-est rivals are set to go head-to-head in the battle to sign Neymar before the Spanish transfer window closes on September 2.

Barcelona newspaper

Mundo Deportivo says the 27-year-old will wait until Au-gust 20 for Barcelona to make a decisive move, after which “PSG’s number 10 does not rule out any option in order to leave the French champions, where it is clear he does not want to stay any longer.”

But Mundo adds that “it is clear Neymar wants to play for Barcelona” while Diario Sport

agrees, writing that “ t h e w i n n i n g

card Barca con-tinues to hold

is the will of the striker to r u n i t e w i t h

players like Leo Messi and Luis Suarez. With them he has a great under-standing on the pitch and also a strong friendship off it.”

Marca believes Madrid also have factors in their favour. “Neymar’s priority is not to go to Barcelona. His priority is to leave the PSG,” wrote Mar-ca, also citing their “mag-nificent relationship” with PSG, “quite the opposite” of how the French club view

Barcelona. Luka Modric is mentioned as

a possible makeweight while Philippe Coutinho, who re-portedly rejected an offer from Tottenham this week, could be included in an offer from Barcelona.

Nadal, Thiem cruise on Rafael Nadal defeated Guido Pella to reach the ATP Montreal quarter-finals

• Thiem survives Cilic to extend winning streak

• Zverev pushes through

AFP | Montreal

Rafael Nadal stepped closer to a record 35th Masters 1000 title on Thursday,

dispatching Argentina’s Gui-do Pella 6-3, 6-4 Thursday to power into the ATP Montreal quarter-finals.

The Spanish world number two has now notched the most wins in the elite series, with his 379th Masters victory surpass-ing Roger Federer by one.

Nadal, an 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, could add an-other Masters footnote to his epic resume if he successfully defends his Canadian crown for the all-time trophy mark.

He ended the evening with an ace out wide on his fourth match point, moving into his ninth Ca-nadian quarter-final.

Nadal will play for a semi-fi-nal berth against Italy’s Fabio Fognini after the seventh seed beat France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 7-5.

The victory came in blustery conditions, which Nadal said were not a huge bother. He made good on an impossible sky hook

reverse overhead at one point in the contest.

“It was a tough day in terms of wind, but we are used to play-ing like this,” he said. “It can be beautiful to play in tough con-ditions. The player with more options has the better chance to survive.”

Dominic Thiem reached the last eight by defeating Croatia’s Marin Cilic 7-6 (9/7), 6-4, the Austrian’s second victory in two days after waiting five years to break his duck in Canada.

Second seed Thiem, who oust-ed home hope Denis Shapovalov on Wednesday, faced two break points in the final game against the 2014 US Open champion be-fore securing the triumph on a third match point.

Thiem came to Canada af-ter winning the Kitzbuhel clay court title at home last weekend.

Thiem next for Medvedev The world number four

booked a last-eight clash against eighth seed Daniil Medvedev, who eased past unseeded Chris-tian Garin of Chile 6-3, 6-3.

Thiem beat the Russian in April to win the Barcelona title.

“He’s having a great season, playing unbelievable, solid ten-nis every week. It’s going to be very, very tough match.

“Barcelona was of course in my favour because it’s clay. We had a great, close match in St.

Petersburg, which was a very high level.

“I’ll watch that one again, see what I did great there, and try to play similar tomorrow.”

Medvedev beat Garin in 69 minutes, breaking the South American four times.

Zverev fights through Third seed Alexander Zverev

took some quick revenge by beating Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7/5) only 12 days after the German lost to the Georgian in Hamburg.

Zvereva, the 2017 Montreal winner who remains undefeated in the city, destroyed a racquet in frustration and almost lost his way in the final set.

Up a break, he sent over a 10th double-fault to lose serve, 4-4. Only a winning tie-breaker salvaged the victory and set up a last-eight clash with Karen Khachanov.

The Russian sixth seed earned his spot by ousting Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime on the youngster’s 19th birthday -- he shares one with Roger Federer,

now 38.Khachanov administered a 6-7

(7/9), 7-5, 6-3 victory then apol-ogized to the crowd after tak-ing out the last Canadian, but said he thought he got a raw deal from Canadian partisans.

Also advancing to a last-eight meeting were France’s Gael Monfils, who beat Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 6-0, and Span-ish 10th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, who dispatched French-man Richard Gasquet 7-5, 7-5.

Inter hand Icardi’s number nine shirt to LukakuReuters | Milan

Inter Milan’s new signing Romelu Lukaku has been

handed the coveted number nine shirt which previously belonged to Mauro Icardi who was stripped of the captain-cy during the course of last season.

Inter posted a photograph of the Belgian forward wear-ing the shirt on the club’s In-stagram account one day af-ter confirming that they had signed him from Manchester United.

Icardi has been Inter’s lead-ing scorer for each of the last five seasons but new coach Antonio Conte, who replaced Luciano Spalletti after last sea-son, has already said the Ar-gentine is not part of his plans.

Other players to have worn the shirt include Brazilian Ronaldo, Cameroon forward Samuel Eto’o and Argentine Hernan Crespo.

Lukaku said that Conte, who won three successive Serie A titles with Juventus and an English Premier League and FA Cup with Chelsea, was one of the main reasons he signed for the club.

“Yes, the coach was a key factor. He’s the best coach in the world: he manages to im-prove his players, while his ca-reer speaks for itself,” Lukaku told Inter’s TV channel.

The 26-year-old was also

motivated by the challenge of helping to rebuild Inter, who have spent nearly a decade in the shadow of bitter rivals Ju-ventus.

Inter, who finished fourth in Serie A last season, have not won a major title since the Coppa Italia in 2011 while Juventus have won Se-rie A for the last eight seasons.

“ I n e e d e d t h e c h a l l e n g e where I could help the team build for the future and everything is present here to help me,” he said.

“ He r e , t h e foundat ions are there to do well. Through my commit-ment and my desire to per-form, I want to help this team a c h i e v e b i g things.”

Everton sealed the dead-line-day signing of Ar-

senal forward Alex Iwobi on Thursday for a reported fee of £28 million ($40 million), completing a busy transfer window for the club.

Nigeria international Iwobi penned a five-year deal which was only an-nounced more than four hours after the transfer deadline of 1700 local time (1600 GMT).

The 23-year-old, capped 36 times by Nigeria, scored 15 goals in 149 appearances for Arsenal after making his first-team debut in 2015.

Manchester City mid-fielder Ilkay Gundo-

gan has signed a three-year contract extension which will keep him at the club un-til 2023, the Premier League champions said yesterday.

Gundogan, who was signed from Borussia Dort-mund in 2016 for 25 million pounds ($30.27 million), had one more year on his existing deal before he put pen to paper on the exten-sion.

The Germany internation-al made 50 appearances in all competitions for City last season, grabbing six goals and eight assists as the club achieved the domestic tre-ble of the league, FA C u p and League Cup.

“I have huge-ly enjoyed the last three years here at City and every-one at the club has h e l p e d make me feel at home from my very f i r s t d a y,” G u n d o g a n said.
