The first thing was small – barely noticeable in the grand scheme of things – I was listening to the radio in the car and found myself tutting at the music. I switched the radio off and instead put on a CD of songs I used to listen to at school. The following week, when arranging a night out with friends, I heard myself say: “Let’s go somewhere where we can sit and actually hear each other and talk without shouting”. By now, I had a sneaking suspicion that something was wrong. The final straw came when I tried on a pair of high heels in a shop and dismissed them immediately because I de- cided I didn’t want to put fashion before com- fort. There can only be one conclusion: I’m get- ting old. Painful high heels have never been an issue before. On realising that age was catching up with me, I ran to the mirror, expecting to see deep lines around my eyes. But the mirror revealed no new horrors. Phew. Then I ran to my ward- robe – had my lovely dresses and jeans magi- cally morphed into pleated skirts with comfort- able elasticated waistbands? Nope. Phew again. So with no lines and wrinkles and no fashion faux pas to worry about, surely I still had time to cling on to my youth? I called a friend and insisted we go out that night, wearing our best glad rags and the highest heels we could find. By 11pm we were both yawning in a taxi on our way home. No matter, we were still young, we could stay up all night and talk until dawn! We talked until midnight and then crashed out on her sofa. The following morning my friend said she was popping out to get us some breakfast. I found myself telling her to put a jacket on be- cause it looked cold out. She looked at me like I was mad and reminded me it was July. Then she hesitated before reaching out for her jacket and putting it on. At least if I’m getting old, I’m not doing it on my own... DAS SWAPS SOAPS FOR MUSIC WHAT is the best way to manage naturally curly hair during the long summer months? Curls are delicate and need to be handled gen- tly and with care. You should treat your hair to a high quality shampoo and conditioner that is specifically designed for curly hair. I would also recommend using a multi-tasking product such as a leave in conditioner to reduce frizz, condition, moisturise and increase shine. Also remember to use a diffuser when you are blow-drying curly hair – the key is not to over dry your hair, so set your dryer on a slow, warm setting for the best results. Using a curl cream before and after drying will enhance the shape of your curls and give your hair more volume. For super shine, finish off by spraying your hair with a fine mist of shine spray. It was located in a gritty and edgy derelict paper mill, which I think is a good contrast to the glamour you see in most music videos. Why didn’t you demand a more sexy location? Because I think the contrast is more interesting, it just appealed to me a lot more. You seem to have gone for a sex- ier image in the video. Was this a conscious decision? As an artist, I think you just have to represent what feels comforta- ble and real. In terms of music, who are your greatest influences? Wow, that is a difficult question because there are just too many to mention. If I had to name a few, they would include Whitney Houston, En Vogue, Karen White and Janet Jackson. What’s the rest of your album like? Do you have a favourite track? I think the album represents my personality, which is fun and sas- sy, but it also explores my sensi- tive side. I have a few favourite tracks and have been fortunate to have Labyrinth and Naughty Boy produce some great tunes for me. What are your biggest passions away from work? Unfortunately, I don’t really have time for anything else apart from work at the moment, but spend- ing quality time with friends and family is very important to me. You sing, dance and act really well. Do you have any other tal- ents we don’t know about? Well, those who I’ve cooked for before can tell you I make a mean Thai green curry! How do you deal with being linked to different guys? (Laughs) I don’t really pay any at- tention to stuff like that, and you shouldn’t either unless it is comes from me directly! Is there a special man in your life at the minute? At the moment. I am single, sin- gle, single! How would a guy need to im- press Preeya Kalidas? He’s got to have the three C’s – he has to be confident, charming and charismatic. If you had to be stranded on a desert island with anyone, who would it be with? My husband, who I haven’t met just yet! Your hair is always immaculate, what is the secret? I normally use Amla hair oil for the nourishment and shine and I have a great pair of Amika curlers. Do you have any other beauty secrets and does it bother you that as an actress and singer you need to watch your weight? The advice I would give is to al- ways take your makeup off at the end of the day and drink lots of water. I suppose it only bothers me because I love food, but at the same time it keeps me in check. What is the plan for the rest of the year? Promotion, promotion, promo- tion and more promotion! My single is out this month and my second single will be released in November. We will be probably be shooting the video in Septem- ber. I am also doing the Mela cir- cuit this summer with Mumzy, which I am looking forward to. What are your greatest unful- filled ambitions? I have too many to mention, but I am so happy that my dream of becoming a music artist is finally coming true! Finally, why should we pick up a copy of Shimmy? (Smiles) To help make it a huge summer anthem. It would also make my mum very proud too. The single Shimmy is released on July 26. SOMETHING weird is happening to me.

The final straw came when I tried on a pair of high heels in a shop and dismissed them immediately because I de-cided I didn’t want to put fashion before com-fort. There can only be one conclusion: I’m get-ting old. Painful high heels have never been an issue before.

On realising that age was catching up with me, I ran to the mirror, expecting to see deep lines around my eyes. But the mirror revealed no new horrors. Phew. Then I ran to my ward-robe – had my lovely dresses and jeans magi-cally morphed into pleated skirts with comfort-able elasticated waistbands? Nope. Phew again.
