Irshaadul Mulook- Online Class (5)

Lesson 4

29th Jumaadal Ukhraa 1439 Hijri

18th March 2018

Last week we had reached this point where Hadhrat Maulana Zakariyya

Rahmatullahi Alayh had mentioned that, 'I emphasise upon those people who are doing Dhikr, in other words those people who are connected and have become Ba'iyat (have an Islahi Ta'alluq), to study these two Kitaabs and read through them as frequently as they can, and they are Irshaadul Mulook and Ikmaalush Shiam.' We explained the reason why we chose this Kitaab, due to the emphasised

advice of Hadhrat Zakariya Rahmatullahi Alayh. Going on, Hadhrat says,

حضرت شيخ االسالم موالنا الحاج سيد حسين احمد صاحب مدنی نور هللا مرقدہ بھی اپنے خاص لوگوں کو امداد السلوک کے مطالعہ کی تاکيد فرمايا کرتے تھے Hadhrat Shaykhul Islaam Maulana Al Haaj Sayyid Hussain Ahmad Sahib Madani nawwarallahu marqadahu bhi apne khaas logon ko Imdaadus Sulook ke Mutala'ah ki taakeed farmaya karte the

Shaykhul Islam Hadhrat Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani Rahmatullahi Alayh who is also one of our great Akaabireen, and a very famous Buzurg of

Deoband, also advised his special people, those that were very close to him to study and go through this Kitaab Imdaadus Sulook, in other words - Irshaadul Mulook.

Hadhrat Madani Rahmatullahi Alayh was the Khaleefah of Hadhrat Gangohi

Rahmatullahi Alayh himself. So obviously this was the Kitaab of his Shaykh, therefore he would advise his Mureeds to study it.

Page 3: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

Hadhrat goes on to say,

Is naakara ke nazdeek bhi in donon risaalon ka mutala'ah Dhaakireen ke liye bohot mufeed hai

According to this humble one's opinion, those who are the Dhaakireen, it is very beneficial for them to study these two Kitaabs

چاہيے Is liye apne se Ba'iyat ka Ta'alluq rakhne waale ahbaab se taakeed karta huun ke is naakaarah ke Fazaail ke rasaail ko ehtemaam se mutala'ah me rakhe aur Dhaakireen ko Irshaadul Mulook aur Ikmaalush Shiam ko khaas taur se Mutala'ah me rakhna chahiye

That is why I emphasise upon all the brothers who have become Ba'iyat to me that they should specially concentrate on all the booklets I have written

on Fazaail and Rasaail - the collection of all which is known as Fazaaile

A'maal today.

Each one is a separate booklet for example Hikaayaatus Sahaabah which comes in the beginning, then we have Fazaaile Quraan - that is a separate

booklet, Fazaaile Namaz etc So all of it put together was made into a compilation that we all know of as

Fazaaile A'maal. So Hadhrat is saying, the people connected to me should make sure that

they are reading Fazaile A'maal, and as we all know, it is a Kitaab written by Hadhrat Maulana Zakariyya himself, and they should also specially read these two Kitaabs - Irshaadul Mulook and Ikmaalush Shiam.

بے رشيديہ کے نام سے متبوع مرقدہ کی تربيت السالک اور حضرت موالنا گنگوہی قدس سرہ کے مکاتيب جو مکاتي ہے مطالعہ ميں رکھنا مفيد ہے Aur jin ahbaab ko is naakarah ne ijaazat dee hai, unke liye Hadhrat e Aqdas Hakeemul Ummat Hadhrat Thanvi nawwarallahu marqadahu ki Tarbiyatus Saalik aur Hadhrat Maulana Gangohi Quduse Sirrahu ke makaateeb jo makaateebe Rasheediyyah ke naam se matbu'u hai mutala'ah me rakhna mufeed hai

As far as those of my Mureeds who I have given permission to take Ba'iyat (to make other people Ba'iyat to themselves), they are now my Khalifahs,

and are also Shaykhs in their own right, they are now on a higher level, I tell

Page 4: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

them to study the Kitaab of Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh called

Tarbiyatus Saalik, which is actually a compilation of the correspondence

between his Mureedeen, where they would update him regarding their Spiritual conditions, and he would then reply back with their Ilaaj and

solutions etc. All of those letters have been put together in this Kitaab, and

also the letters of Hadhrat Gangohi Rahmatullahi Alayh which have been

published by the name of Makaateebe Rasheediyyah.

Normally the letters of our Buzurgaane Deen, (what they wrote in reply to

the questions from their Mureedeen) hold a lot of value because they contain a lot of wisdom and Ilm within them.

These responses would be compiled and put together in form of Kitaabs. Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of

the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh.

This would be for the benefit of the general public, for those who would read the Kitaab, because many times problems come up which we need to seek an answer to, and we get the answers in these letters.

However studying these letters is something which is quite advanced, many times it is a bit difficult to understand that is why Hadhrat is advising the

Khaleefahs to go through Tarbiyyatus Saalik and the letters of Hadhrat Gangohi Rahmatullahi Alayh, as they have reached a certain level.

The general Mureedeen would not be able to benefit a lot if they were to read these Kitaabs on their own.

Going on, he says, Ikmaalush Shiam ke muta'alliq uske shuruu me tamheed aa rahi hai

As far as Ikmaalus Shiam is concerned, we are not going to discuss it here, as the introduction to it is within the Kitaab itself, as here we are doing the

Kitaab Irshaadul Mulook and its introduction. ارشاد الملوک حضرت قطب العالم حضرت گنگوہی رحمت هللا عليہ کی کتاب امداد السلوک کا ترجمہ ہے Irshaadul Mulook Hadhrat Qutbul Aalam Hadhrat Gangohi Rahmatullahi Alayh ki Kitaab Imdaadus Sulook ka tarjumah hai He says, 'as we have already mentioned before, Irshaadul Mulook is the

translation of the Kitaab of Hadhrat Gangohi Rahmatullahi Alayh which was

called Imdaadus Sulook.

Page 5: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

Asal Kitaab Faarsi me thi jo us waqt ki aam faham zubaan thi

The original Kitaab was written by Hadhrat Gangohi Rahmatullahi Alayh in the Faarsi (Persian) language which was the most understood language in those days

تيرا سو بتيس ميں اسکا اردو ميں سليس ترجمہ فرمايے Jab uske samajhne waale na rahe, to Hadhrat Maulana Aashiq Ilaahi Meert'hi nawwarallahu marqadahu ne Shawwal san teraso battees me uska Urdu me salees tarjumah farmaye Hadhrat Maulana Aashiq Ilaahi Meert'hi Rahmatullahi Alayh translated the Kitaab in a very flowing and beautiful manner in Shawwal of the year 1332

Hijri. That is almost a 107 years ago.

So the translation which we are currently doing is actually 107 years old, as we are presently in the year 1439 Hijri.

After this he mentions,

Mukhtasar Halaat Maulana Aashiq Ilaahi Sahib

Brief life history regarding the life of the translator,

Hadhrat Maulana Aashiq Ilaahi Meert'hi Rahmatullahi Alayh.

This is very beneficial, because we get to learn about our different

Akaabireen which most people are unaware of their names, they have never heard of them haalake these are our elders, and it is from them that Deen was passed onto us. Therefore, it is our responsibility to know about them, and the more we are going to learn about the different elders of Deoband that were there in the

prime era, the better it will be for us because they are the ones we have to emulate and take as role models.

We have to try and mould our lives according their lives.

Page 6: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

So Hadhrat continues,

Hadhrat Maulana Aashiq Ilaahi Sahib ne apne ibtidai haalaat, Al Jawaahiruz Zawaahir Tarjumatul Basaa'ir me khud hi tahreer farmaye hai

Hadhrat Meert'hi Rahmatullahi Alayh in his Kitaab of Al Jawaahiruz Zawaahir Tarjumatul Basaa'ir, has mentioned about his own life. Aur bohot tafseel se Zikr farmayi jinko me mukhtasaran naql karta huun

And he has gone into quite a bit of detail, and I am briefly going to summarise what he has written.

Woh likhte hai.... Firstly he writes about,

1) Lineage - نسب عاشق االہی بن ياد االہی بن رحم االہی بن فضل االہی Aashiq Ilaahi bin Yaade Ilaahi bin Raham Ilaahi bin Fazle Ilaahi This is his lineage, as we can see the word Ilaahi in all of it, with his own name being Ilaahi.

These are actually very nice choices for people who have sons, one can have a whole variety of names that they can keep.

They will also be unique names as everyone tends to be looking for something unique, as they are names that are not normally heard of.

Aashiq Ilaahi means - Lover of Allah Yaade Ilaahi - Remembrance of Allah

Raham Ilaahi - The Mercy of Allah Fazl Ilaahi - The Kindness of Allah.

Page 7: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

After mentioning his lineage till his great grandfather, he mentions his date

of birth.

2) Date of Birth -

Hadhrat Aashiq Ilaahi Rahmatullahi Alayh ki Wilaadat paanch Rajab san bara so at'hanwe Hijri, mutaabiq teen juun san at'hara so ikyaasi iswi yawmul Jumuah ko huwi

Hadhrat Maulana Aashiq Ilaahi Rahmatullahi Alayh was born on the 5th of

Rajab in 1298 Hijri which corresponds to the 3rd of June, 1881 AD, on the day of Friday.

3) About him

Chaar saal ki umar me Alif baa shuruu huwi aur san tera so chaar Hijri me, jab meri umar ch'he saal ki thi, to Quran e Paak naazirah aur kuch urdu ki kitaabe parhli thi When he was four years old, he started to learn Alif Baa, and in 1304 Hijri,

when I was six years old, he had already completed Naazirah of the Quran, learning the Quran while looking inside, not only that, but he had also

learnt a few Urdu books as well.

Aur be parhe akhbaaraat ko far far parhne laga He says, 'without learning how to read properly, I would look at the Urdu

newspapers and would start reading them very fluently.'

From this we get to know what qualities and abilities he already had when he was still a small child. ھ( تيرا سو پانچ ميں عربی شروع کردی١٣٠٥) Tera so paanch me Arbi shuruu kardi

'In 1305, I began to learn Arabic.'

In other words, when he was only seven years of age, he started learning it.

Page 8: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

Uske baad angrezi school me do saal taalim pai aur isi tarah mutafarriq taalim hote huwe jumaada thaaniyah san tera so igyaarah me, jabke meri umar terah saal ki thi Madrassah Qawmi Meerat'h me dakhla huwa

'After that, I went to an English school and stayed in study for 2 years, and in this way, my education was scattered.

Going through all of those stages, finally in 1311 Hijri when I was 13 years old, I enrolled at Madrassah Qawmi in Meerat'h.'

Meerat'h is the name of a town in UP, India. That is where Hadhrat was born and the place he lived.

Aur ibtidaa se meezan wagherah shuruu huwi I started off with the normal system of the Aalim course from the begining.

San tera so baara Hijri me Mishkaat shuruu ho gayi jabke arbi shuruu kiye huwe sirf das maheene huwe the In less than a year, in 1312 Hijri, I started learning Mishkaat Shareef, it had

only been 10 months since I had begun the Aalim Course.

Within a span of ten months, I reached the level of being able to learn Mishkaat which is a Kitaab of Hadith that is normally taught one year before the final year, in the 2nd last year of the Aalim Course.

So we can see how intelligent he was, how much Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala had blessed him with, that in just a minimal time, he was able to go

through so many years of work.

Do saal me jumlah kutube sihha wa deeniya khatam ho gayi 'I had finished off all the Aalim Course Kitaabs within two years from the

starting of my course.'

In a matter of 2 years, he had completed the entire Aalim Course together with the final year where all the big Kitaabs of Hadith like Bukhari and

Page 9: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

Muslim are taught.

سولہ سال کی تھی ١٦اور حضرت موالنا مير حسن امروہی صاحب نے دستار بندی فرمايئ، اس وقت ميری عمر Aur Hadhrat Maulana Meer Hassan Amrohi Sahib ne dastaar bandi farmayi, us waqt meri umar sola saal ki thi He says, 'Hadhrat Maulana Meer Hassan put the عمامہ- Amaamah - (turban)

on my head, I was 16 years old at that time.' Normally when a student graduates, the Ustaadh puts a turban on student's

head in the graduation, indicating that now he is a qualified Aalim.

At the age of 16, he had already completed the Aalim Course. He was so young! ھ( سن تيرا سو پندرہ ميں ميرا نکاح اول ہوا١٣١٥ربيع الثانی ) Rabiu Thaani san tera so pandrah me mera Nikaahe Awwal huwa

'In Rabiu Thaani 1315 Hijri, my first Nikah took place.'

His first Nikah happened at the time when he was only about 18 or 19 years of age.

Aur isi saal Rajab san tera so pandrah me lahore Maulwi Faazil ki ta'leem ke liye chala gaya, aur a'ala number ki kaamyabi haasil ki 'In the same year of 1315 in Rajab, I went to Lahore to give the official exam,

and I passed with very high numbers.' In other words, the state exam. This was an exam to get the government

certificate for completing the Aalim Course, because what he had done was completed in the Madrassah.

In those days, a person would get the State Certificate, but for that it was a requirement to take a State exam. ی کا انعام لينے کے ليے الہور روانہ ہواھ( سن تيرا سو سولہ ہجری کو کامياب١٣١٦چار محرم ) Chaar Muharram tera so sola Hijri ko kaamyabi ka inaam lene ke liye Lahore rawana huwa 'On the 4th of Muharram 1316, I went to Lahore to collect my prize for

passing my exam.' Remember, in those days Lahore was in India, there was no Pakistan.

Page 10: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

There was no problem of going from one place to the other as it was all one. To raasta me Gangoh Hadhrat Qutube Aalam Gangohi Quduse Sirrahu se ba'iyat ki 'While going to Lahore, I stopped on the way at Gangoh, and I became

Ba'iyat to Hadhrat Gangohi Rahmatullahi Alayh whilst I was there.'

Ek shab qiyaam ke baad Lahore rawana hogaya

'I stayed there for one night, then went on to Lahore.'

Waapsi par san tera so satrah me nadwatul Ulamaa ki Talab par mulazimat par gaya

'When I returned, then in 1317 Hijri, I was given an opportunity to teach in Nadwatul Ulamaa.'

Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulamaa دارل علوم ندوة العلماء is a very famous Madrassah in Lucknow.

Aur chabees Muharram san tera so satrah Hijri ko Nadwah me pachees mahwaar par mera taqarrur Darul Uloom Nadwah ki do mudarrisi par ho gaya 'On the 26th Muharram of 1317 Hijri, I was employed as a teacher in Darul Uloom Nadwah.

I started to teach the 2nd year of Aalim Course at a salary of twenty five rupees per month (Rs 25).'

Lekin aab wa hawa ki adme muwaafaqat aur Akaabireen ke adme pasandgi ki wajah se akhir Rajab me waapsi hogayi 'However I returned at the ending of Rajab.'

Page 11: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

He only started in Muharram and left at the end of Rajab.

Why did he leave?

• Firstly because the water and the air of Lucknow was giving him health problems, and his body was not adjusting to the environment. In other words, he was constantly staying unwell.

• The other reason he said was, 'my elders did not like it, they were not happy for me to teach there, and that is why I resigned and returned in

Rajab.'

So basically he was there for only about 7 months and returned due to these reasons.

Aur kuch ruupiya qarz le kar safar san athaara so Hijri me khayrul mataabi'i ke naam se matba'a huwa jis me ujrat par kitaaben taba karaane laga He says,

'In Safar of 1318 Hijri, I took a loan of some rupees and I used it towards opening a printing press by the name of Khayrul Mataabi'i.

I then started to publish books there at a fee.' Aur saath hi mufeed kitaabon ke mutaraajim me mashghul hogaya

'Together with printing Kitaabs, I also started to translate beneficial Kitaabs. This was basically the Khidmat of Deen that I involved myself in.'

Printing of Kitaabs is also a Khidmat of Deen. If someone is running a printing press, publishing and printing Deeni

Kitaabs, then this is a very good work that a person is doing, provided the Niyyat is correct.

If the Niyyat is correct, then together with making money, he is also getting Thawaab because he is becoming a means of publishing beneficial Kitaabs

being spread amongst the people. That is why he opened such a business. On one side, it was a means of his

livelihood, and on the other side Deeni Khidmat was also being carried out. So he also used to translate Kitaabs alongside printing them.

That is also a very great Deeni Khidmat.

Page 12: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

Many of us do not realise that translating beneficial Deeni Kitaabs are also fields of Deen, and we need people in those fields.

We need Ulamaa to handle these fields of Deen, these are also very necessary.

There are many Kitaabs which are in languages that the common people cannot understand and they would be very beneficial for the people if they

were to be translated into a language like English for example. Today, unfortunately English is the language that is most commonly used

and understood language in the world.

So that is why translating Kitaabs into English from maybe Urdu or Arabic or even Persian, those which could benefit the public, obviously we are not talking about the technical Kitaabs, those which deal with technical issues

those are not to be translated because those are only for the Ulamaa and not for the public.

But those Kitaabs which have been written for general benefit, but they are in another language, so it is a very big khidmat to translate those Kitaabs

and make them available and accessible for the general public that they can read those Kitaabs and they can benefit from them.

Just like the Kitaab we are doing right now, it was originally in the Farsi language, but he himself, Hadhrat Meert'hi Rahmatullahi Alayh translated it

into Urdu, now we are able to understand it, and again we are doing it Urdu, but because again our Urdu is weak, that is why in this class we are then translating the Urdu into English.

So translating Kitaabs is also a very very big Deeni khidmat.

Aur sab se awwal Quran e Majeed ka sarees urdu me tarjumah kiya

He says, 'the first Kitaab I translated was the Quran e Kareem.' Now what better Kitaab to start off ones career with than the Quran e Kareem.

He translated it into Urdu, a very flowing and easy Urdu which people can

understand.

Aur san tera so unees Hijri me taba surate hamaa'il usko taba karaya I translated it and published it too.'

(As he was running the printing press)

Page 13: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This

Woh bohot sad farakht hogaye

He said, 'after I printed it and published it, it got sold out very quickly and hundreds of copies were sold, to this extent that within one year, all the copies that I had printed were all sold.'

Aur san tera so bees Hijri me usko do baara taba karaya

In 1320 Hijri I re- printed the second edition of the translation of the Quran

e Kareem.

Aur uske saath hi apni ta'leef Al Islam taba karayi jis me itna nafaa huwa ke jis se mera qarza bhi adaa hogaya aur mujh par Hajj bhi farz ho gaya

'Together with that, I had written a Kitaab called Al Islam, which I also published, and just through that, Yaani printing the Quran e Kareem and

selling it, and the Kitaab Al Islaam which I wrote, I got so much profit in that, that not only did I have the money to pay off the loan which I had taken to start off the business, but even Hajj became Fardh on me.'

So we can see how his life was, from the time he was born and into his

childhood till now, there are a lot of lessons to be learnt for us in our day to day lives and also in general, how their lives used to be in comparison to how ours are.

If we compare the two we will find a very big difference. Inshallah he continues to mention about his Safar of Hajj, which we will

continue with next week, Inshallah.

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala give us the Tawfiq to make Amal on whatever has been mentioned, and whatever we have talked about today.

Page 14: Hadhrat Mufti Arif Umar Daamat Barakaatuhum...Obviously their names wouldn't be included. It would just be the letter of the Mureed and the corresponding reply of the Shaykh. This
