    What This Guide Covers The Quick-Start Guide covers the basics of H-ADCP testing and deployments using the Surfa-ceView software. It will guide you through the inspection of components and bench testing of the H-ADCP. It will also tell you how to install and collect data with the H-ADCP.

    Additional information can be found in the H-ADCP Operation Manual that is supplied on CD-ROM and the SurfaceView Users Guide that is supplied on the SurfaceView software CD. If you ordered the directional wave measurement upgrade you will also be sent the WavesMon software package. The Users Guide is supplied on the WavesMon software CD.

    Hardware Overview The H-ADCP Horizontal ADCP provides real time current profiles from a fixed position. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the features of the H-ADCP, paying special attention to the orientation of the X, and Y-axis. Understanding the orientation of the H-ADCP is crucial for proper installation.

    UH-ADCP Components UI/O Cable Connector Input/Output (I/O) cable connects the Workhorse H-ADCP to the computer. Urethane Face The urethane face covers the transducer ceramics. Never set the transducer on a hard surface. The urethane face may be damaged. Housing The standard housing allows deployment depths to 200M Thermistor The Thermistor measures the water temperature. Pressure Sensor (depth)- The optional pressure sensor measures water pres-sure. Transducer Head The electronics and transducer ceramics are mounted to the transducer head

    Mounting Orientation

    UX Axis - Pitch is measured around the X-axis and should be set to zero. UY- Axis - Roll is measured around the Y- axis and should be set to zero. Pressure Sensor The pressure sen-sor must be facing up towards the water surface

    Power Overview H-ADCPs require +20 to 50 VDC to operate. The included AC Adapter runs on any standard AC power and supplies +48 VDC to run the H-ADCP for testing and setup. Substitute your own power supply with a voltage of 45 to 50 VDC for deployments.

    Serial Communication Overview The standard communications settings for a H-ADCP is RS-422, 9600-baud, no parity, 8 data bits and 1 stop bit.

    You can set the H-ADCP for baud rates other than 9600 baud using the CB command (see Changing the Baud Rate in the H-ADCP U). If you make the new baud rates permanent with the CK command, BBTalk will search for the correct settings if you use the Auto Detect function, which searches for the H-ADCPs current serial port and baud rate (see Testing the H-ADCP U). If you tell the programs these settings, you will save time required for searching. Both WinSC and BBTalk will use the last communication setting for future use. Change Communication Setting. Changing a switch setting on the PIO board can change the communication setting between RS-232 and RS-422. The switch is in plain view on the top circuit board, near the cable connectors. Its settings are plainly marked on the board. If the serial protocol is set for RS-422 and your computer expects RS-232, you will need an RS-232 to RS-422 adapter between the H-ADCP cable and your computer.

    RS-232 to RS-422 Converter Overview The adapter converts RS-232-to-RS-422. This adapter (includes cable) is supplied with the H-ADCP.

    NOTE. The converter supplied with the H-ADCP is powered by the computers COM port. It may be necessary to use a different converter when very long communication lines are used (maximum 1300 meters).

    Software Overview You will need several software programs to test and collect current profile data with the H-ADCP.

    SurfaceView is TRDIs real-time data collection program for horizontal H-ADCPs. This guide does not go into detail about the operation of SurfaceView. For more information see the Sur-faceView Users Guide. BBTalk is a terminal emulator that allows your computer to communicate with the H-ADCP. This guide does not go into detail about the operation of BBTalk. For more information see the TRDI Tools Users Guide.

    If you ordered the directional wave measurement upgrade you will also need WavesMon and WaveView. WavesMon is the directional wave measurement package for the H-ADCP. Use WaveView to view wave data. It is an enormously useful tool for turning waves data into waves information.

    SurfaceView Main Screen SurfaceView is TRDIs real-time data collection program for H-ADCPs.

    BBTalk Main Screen BBTalk is a terminal emulator program that lets your computer communicate with the H-ADCP.

    WavesMon Main Screen WavesMon is the directional wave mea-surement package used for the H-ADCP. This program is included if you ordered the directional wave mea-surement upgrade. For more information on how to use this software package, see the WavesMon Users Guide and WavesMon Quick Start Guide.

    WaveView Main Screen WaveView is geared toward analysis and presentation of processed wave data created by the software program WavesMon. WaveView provides the big picture view of the wave climate as well as details of individual height spec-tra and directional spectra. Time-series of significant wave height, peak period, peak direction, water level, and height spectra make it easy to find significant events. This program is included if you ordered the directional wave measurement up-grade. For more information on how to use this software package, see the WaveView Users Guide.

    Installing the Software You will be installing several software packages. These will be required for testing, installa-tion, and data collection.

    TRDI software requires a Windows compatible computer with the following specifications:

    Windows XP or Windows 2000

    Pentium III 600 MHz class PC (higher recommended)

    64 megabytes of RAM (128 MB RAM recommended)

    50 MB Free Disk Space plus space for data files (A large, fast hard disk is recom-mended)

    One Serial Port (two or more High Speed UART Serial Port recommended)

    Minimum display resolution of 1024 x 768, 256 color (higher recommended)

    CD-ROM Drive

    Mouse or other pointing device

    Software Installation a. Insert the compact disc into your CD-

    ROM drive and then follow the browser instructions on your screen. If the browser does not appear, com-plete Steps "b" through "d."

    b. On the Windows task bar, click the Start button, and then click Run.

    c. Type :launch. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive D, type d:launch.

    Section 2.0: Bench Testing The bench-testing process ensures that the H-ADCP is working properly before you put it in the water. The bench-test procedure will involve a visual inspection for obvious damage, and powered tests that will verify that the H-ADCPs electronics and transducers are functioning.

    Visual Inspection Before connecting the H-ADCP, make a quick visual inspection of the components to make sure nothing is damaged.

    UI/O Cable and Dummy Plug Remove the strain relief. Roll the rubber retaining strap up so that it does not hinder plug removal. Remove the dummy plug by pulling with a straight-out motion. Do not wiggle the connector up; this can damage the con-nector pins. A slight side-to-side wiggle as you are pulling on the cable is OK.

    Visual Inspection Inspect the pins for damage. Make sure that they are straight and that there is no corrosion on the metal surfaces. Inspect the H-ADCP for damage. There should be no cracks or peeling surfaces. Check the following: Urethane faces Pressure housing Anode condition

    Setup the H-ADCP You will now connect the H-ADCP to a power supply and a computer with the TRDI software installed.

    Remove the dummy plug and connect the I/O cable to the H-ADCP. Do so by pushing straight in against the connec-tor. Remember, don't wiggle the con-nector up, push it straight in. Connect the I/O cable to your comput-er's communication port. Connect the I/O cable power connector to a 20 to 60 volt DC power supply. Note: Place a light amount of DC-111 lubricant on the connector pins (rubber portion only). This will make it easier to connect or remove the I/O cable and dummy plug.

    NOTE. H-ADCP units are pre-configured to use RS-232 or RS-422 communications protocols. Your computers communication port must match the H-ADCP, or use an adapter. To change the communication protocol, refer to the H-ADCP Operation Manual. If you ordered the RS-422 configuration, the H-ADCP is supplied with a RS-232 to RS-422 converter. The RS-232 to RS-422 converter must be disconnected from the H-ADCP when the cable has been disconnected from the computer. If left connected, the internal battery used to maintain ROM inside the H-ADCP can be drained or false Breaks may be sent.

    Changing the Baud Rate in the H-ADCP The H-ADCP can be set to communicate at baud rates from 300 to 115200. The factory default baud rate is always 9600 baud. The baud rate is controlled via the CB-command. The follow-ing procedure explains how to set the baud rate and save it in the H-ADCP. This procedure assumes that you will be using the program BBTalk that is supplied by TRDI.

    Connect the H-ADCP to the computer and apply power. Start the BBTalk program and establish communications with the H-ADCP. Wa-keup the H-ADCP by sending a break signal with the End key. At the ">" prompt in the communication window, type CR1 then press the Enter key. This will set the H-ADCP to the factory default settings.

    Send the CB-command that selects the baud rate you wish. The table on the left shows the CB-command settings for different baud rates with no parity and 1 stop bit. For example, to change the baud rate to 115200, at the ">" prompt in the com-munication window, type cb811 then press the Enter key.

    The CB? command will identify the communication setting.

    BBTalk will send the command CK to save the new baud rate setting. Exit BBTalk. The H-ADCP is now set for the new baud rate. The baud rate will stay at this setting until you change it back with the CB-command.

    Exit BBTalk so the communication port is available for use with other pro-grams.

    Testing the H-ADCP Before deploying the H-ADCP, it is a good idea to make sure that it is working properly. This simple test checks that the H-ADCP is able to communicate with the computer.

    Start BBTalk Start the BBTalk program (for help on using BBTalk, see the TRDI Tools Us-er's Guide). On the Connect To screen, select WorkHorse. Select the COM port the H-ADCP cable is connected to. Click Next.

    Enter the Baud Rate, Parity, Stop Bits, and Flow Control. If you are unsure of the settings, leave them at the default settings. Click Next, than Finish.

    Communications Settings On the File menu, click Break (you can also press the End key to send a break or use the Toolbar and press the blue B button). You should see the wakeup message appear on the log file window. If the wakeup message is not readable, on the File menu, click Properties. Click the Auto Detect ADCP button. Click OK when the H-ADCP is detected. Try to wakeup the H-ADCP again.

    Testing the H-ADCP At the ">" prompt in the communication window, enter the direct command CR1 then press the Enter key. This will set the H-ADCP to the factory default set-tings. At the ">" prompt in the communication window, enter the direct command CK then press the Enter key. This will save the factory default setting as the default power up condition. At the ">" prompt in the communication window, enter the direct command PS0 then press the Enter key. This will dis-play the H-ADCP system configuration data.

    At the ">" prompt in the communication window, enter the direct command PT3 then press the Enter key. This will run the H-ADCP Receive Path test.

    Compass Alignment The compass calibration algorithm corrects for the distortions caused by the local magnetic fields to give you an accurate measurement. You should be aware of the following items:

    We recommend against calibrating the H-ADCP while on a ship or platform. The ships motion and magnetic fields from the hull and engine will likely prevent suc-cessful calibration.

    If you think your mounting fixture or frame has some magnetic field or magnetic permeability, calibrate the H-ADCP inside the fixture. Depending on the strength and complexity of the fixtures field, the calibration procedure may be able to cor-rect it.

    Preparing for Calibration

    Connect the H-ADCP as shown. Place the H-ADCP on a piece of strong cardboard on top of a smooth wooden (non-magnetic) table. If a wooden table is not available, place the H-ADCP on the floor as far away from metal objects as possible. Use the cardboard to ro-tate the H-ADCP during calibrationthis way you will not scratch the H-ADCP. Place the H-ADCP so that the anode is facing down and the pressure sensor is facing up.

    CAUTION. If you calibrate the compass with the pressure sensor facing downward, the compass calibration will be invalid. Compass errors in excess of 5 degrees may occur.

    Compass Calibration Verification Compass calibration verification is an automated built-in test that measures how well the com-pass is calibrated. The procedure measures compass parameters at every 5 of rotation for a full 360 rotation. When it has collected data for all required directions, the H-ADCP com-putes and displays the results.

    Start BBTalk. See the TRDI Tools Us-ers Guide for assistance on using BBTalk. Using BBTalk, send a Break to wake up the H-ADCP.

    Rotate the H-ADCP slowly 360 degrees (approximately 5 degrees per second). Pay particular attention to the Overall Error. If the overall error is less than 2, the compass does not require alignment. You can align the compass to reduce the overall error even more (if desired).

    Compass Calibration Procedure The built-in automated compass calibration procedure is similar to the alignment verification. The H-ADCP uses the first rotation(s) to compute a new calibration matrix and the final rota-tion to verify the calibration. It will not accept the new matrix unless the calibration was car-ried out properly, and it asks you to verify that you want to use the new calibration if it is not as good as the previous calibration. There are two compass calibrations to choose from; one only corrects for hard iron while the other corrects for both hard and soft iron characteristics for materials rotating with the ADCP. Hard iron effects are related to residual magnetic fields and cause single cycle errors while soft iron effects are related to magnetic permeability that distorts the earths magnetic field and causes double cycle errors.

    For the H-ADCP that is normally in a fixed horizontal attitude we use option b of the AF command that corrects for both hard and soft iron characteristics in a single plane.

    Section 3.0: Installation and Setup Proper H-ADCP and site preparation is critical for a successful deployment. In this section we will prepare the H-ADCP for deployment and ensure that the installation site meets the neces-sary requirements. Then, we will install the H-ADCP in the water and make sure that it is functioning.

    H-ADCP Preparation Before you put the H-ADCP into the water, you must prepare it for deployment.

    Check the Housing Seal If the housing is not properly sealed prior to deployment, the H-ADCP will be destroyed. Visually inspect the mating surfaces of the housing to ensure that there are no obstructions. The faces should be parallel to one another and there should be no gaps. Check to en-sure that the hardware holding the hous-ing together are tight.

    CAUTION. If the H-ADCP was opened, read the H-ADCP Operation Manual for details on H-ADCP re-assembly.

    Zero the Pressure Sensor Use the AZ-command to zero out the pressure sensor at the deployment site, before putting the H-ADCP into the wa-ter. Connect and apply power to the system. Start BBTalk and wakeup the H-ADCP (press the END key). Type AZ and press the Return key. Exit BBTalk.

    Site Preparation The H-ADCP must be rigidly mounted to a structure, such as a large vessel, solid wall, pier, or pile. The mounting structure must be firm, stable, without settlement or displacement over time.

    Mounting Location In order to gain the maximum profiling range at a site, we recommend the H-ADCP be mounted near the middle of the water depth at the mounting struc-ture location. For a site with a signifi-cant seasonal change of water level, the H-ADCP may need to be mounted at different elevations according to sea-sonal water level change. In deep water we recommend the H-ADCP be mounted 5 to 20 meters below the sur-face. UH-ADCP Orientation UX-Axis - Pitch is measured around the X-axis and should be set to zero. UY-Axis - Roll is measured around the Y- axis and should be set to zero. Pressure Sensor The pressure sen-sor must be facing up towards the water surface

    H-ADCP Installation The H-ADCP must be mounted with its transducer orientation in the horizontal direction. That is, the three transducers, which are for water velocity measurement, must be looking horizon-tally (also called side-looking). The pressure sensor, which is for water depth measurement, must be looking up towards the water surface.

    NOTE. For CRITICAL H-ADCP Waves Array installation information, refer to the H-ADCP Wave System Installation Checklist in the H-ADCP Operation Manual.

    Attach H-ADCP to Structure Attach the H-ADCP to a rigid structure, solid wall, pier, or pile. The mounting structure must be firm, stable, without settlement or displacement over time. Double-check all of the connections, seals, and bolts. Connect the I/O cable and make sure that the strain relief is attached to the cable. Bolt the H-ADCP to the structure. Make sure that the I/O cable is routed so that it is not subject to becoming entangled or snagged.

    NOTE. TRDI offers optional kits for attaching the H-ADCP to a structure. For additional information, please contact our field service department (see How to Contact Teledyne RD Instruments).

    Testing the Installed H-ADCP Once the H-ADCP is mounted in the water, its time to communicate with it and make adjust-ments. SurfaceView will be used to adjust the pitch and roll settings as well as to check for ab-normalities in the acoustic backscattering intensity profile.

    Start SurfaceView. On the Setup Wizard, click Real-Time. Click Next.

    Once communications is established, on the Communications Settings screen, click Next. Accept the default setting on the next several screens. Click Finish.

    Pitch and Roll Adjustment The deployment screen of the Surface-View software indicates the pitch and roll angles of the H-ADCP. Adjust the mount until the roll is zero. The H-ADCP rolls about the Y-axis. The roll must be zero. Adjust the mount until the pitch is zero. The H-ADCP pitches about the X-axis. Note: A slight upward or downward pitch may be required to avoid beam interference from the bottom or surface.

    Intensity Plot Start collecting data (see Section 4.0: Collecting Current Profile Data with Sur-faceView) and check the intensity profile for abnormal data. What you are looking for are unusually large spikes, especially ones that stay fixed along the Y-axis of the plot. Spikes that don't move are usually fixed objects in the water like rocks or pylons. Spikes that move along the Y-axis are usually moving objects like schools of fish or logs. It is important to mount the H-ADCP in a location free from fixed obstructions. The velocity data will be questionable if the intensity profile shows abnormalities.

    Section 4.0: Collecting Current Profile Data with SurfaceView This section has simple instructions for collecting current profile data with a Horizontal ADCP.

    Start SurfaceView Start SurfaceView by double clicking the SurfaceView icon. On the Start Wizard, click Real-Time Data Acquisition. Click Next.

    Setup Communications A message box will display whenever the wizard is waiting for a response from the COM port device. If the connection did not get automati-cally made, on the Communications Settings dialog box, select the COM Port, Baudrate, Databits, and Stopbits that the H-ADCP is connected to. If you are unsure of the setting, use Auto Detect. Click Next.

    Output Raw Data File (Prefix) Surfa-ceView uses the Deployment Name (Prefix) to create the data file made dur-ing data collection. Output Directory Use the Output Directory field to select where the raw data file will be stored. Click the Pick Directory button to select the directory. Use the Date/Time in File Name selec-tion to add the Date and Time to the file name. Enter a Maximum File Size in the box. When the data file size reaches the maximum limit, the file will be closed and a new data file generated with an incremented file name. Click Next.

    Click the Browse button and select a path to save the Peak/Mean Data Log file (*.CSV). CSV files can not be over-written. If you see a warning message, click OK and select a different path or file name by clicking the Browse button. Click Next to continue.

    Select Use Wizard and click Next.

    Enter the H-ADCP Setup Choices SurfaceView enters the default settings in the Parameter Setup screen based on the H-ADCP frequency. Leave the default settings for the Num-ber of Cells, Cell Size, and Blank Dis-tance for this Quick Start example.

    Salinity (ppt) Enter the salinity of the water. Coordinates for Velocity Select Beam, Instrument, Ship Coordinates or Earth. Magnetic Variation or Offset (deg) Use a chart to determine the local mag-netic variation in your area and enter the value in the box (only available if using Earth coordinates). ADCP Xducer Depth If the ADCP does not have a pressure sensor, check the Use Manual Depth box and set the depth of the ADCP transducer faces below the surface. This value is used by the ADCP to calculate the speed of sound. ADCP Xducer Heading If the ADCP does not have a compass, check the Use Manual Heading box and enter the heading of the ADCP relative to forward or relative to true north. Click Next.

    Review the commands that will be sent to the ADCP. See the WorkHorse Commands and Output Data Format Guide for details on each command.
